The Mecca Gym is a gem of a training facility located in a strip mall area right off the freeway in…read moreMeridian, ID. It is tucked back in such a way as to allow for back door access to the back lot for Prowler runs, farmer's walks and tire flipping. Owned by local natural bodybuilders and powerlifters, Eric and Kacee Cafferty, the locals all have a sense of ownership and familial bonding after only one visit to this gym. Go in without your headphones on and you'll see what we mean. Everyone is friendly, willing to help, coach, co-train and chat about pretty much anything. We saw a 130# gossipy female (very entertaining) trying to pr her squat with a 210# beefcake mainstay of the club. All of the equipment is top-of-the-line and the Cafferty's own several unique pieces we have not seen anywhere in the Treasure Valley. These include a Nautilus pec-deck straight from Venice Beach, a Roger's squat (if you haven't worked your ass-quads-core in this remarkable piece of equipment, a visit to The Mecca Gym is worth it just for that.) and a seal row bench. The powerlifting staples are of the best quality we've seen in the entire state and if you are trying to just work on your Big 3, this is your gym. Cardio equipment consists of a row of treadmills and a step mill. They also own a Jacob's Ladder, which is great. The step mill has no platform for a phone or iPad to watch a movie so that's disappointing. The staff is all sincerely friendly with welcome greetings, big furry smiles and surprisingly, the females don't annoy us with their friendly chatter. The "Mecca Family" (meaning the members) are always available to help spot you, inform you or give you a tip on how to hit that little-know muscle group or to share a new delicious recipe. The reason we gave The Mecca gym only 4 of 5 stars is that it also offers tanning and childcare-neither of which are note-worthy or worth it. The child care room is always unmanned and you have to ask a staff member to hang out with your kids. This would be fine for older children, but if you have a little one, training over an hour gets you feeling guilty as there are RARELY any kids to play with here. They do have a tv and the kids can watch movies or play with the plethora of trucks, baby toys or a toy kitchen. Also, there is really no set limit on the childcare hours like at other facilities so you could come with the kids at 3 am and train until noon if you so chose. Also, you could let your kids hang out with you on the floor as long as they are well-behaved. This is something you really don't see. The tanning bed was used by us twice in a row and not a drop of color after 15 minutes which tells us that the bulbs must need changing. All-in-all, this is decidedly FABULOUS gym and we could train here for hours!

I come daily if I can / if I'm not too sore, but the workouts are the same across the country, no matter what location you're at that day. The trainers are just as lively, energizing and motivational across the board. They like to play more 90s music which I dig. Meridian seems much busier. More classes fill up, so I have to sign up for wait lists much more often. Luckily a lot of people drop, but sometimes it's last-last minute. Lehi gives you the option of where you want to start the workout when you check-in (treads, rowers, weight floor). Meridian does not. They usually tell you where you're assigned when you check-in. Meridian's studio has less room to do floor exercises by the rowers. You have to stagger or move away from other people to avoid running into people. I am always so thankful for the generous airflow that help keep everyone pushing forward. The workout is worth it, hands down. The facility is always clean, and the staff are friendly. I have never felt so strong and had this much endurance in my life = life-changer.

Gym is not crowded, each time I was there , there might have only been 2-3 other people max. Service is friendly and accommodating. We got a weekend pass as out of state visitors. Pro tip: register on a weekday, since weekends may not have a front desk person to assist Recommendations : 1) test out your access after registration. Make sure to test with door locked to avoid possible subsequent issues 2) bathroom stall was out of toilet paper, so hopefully some more can be stocked up. Overall, would definitely return to visit the facility if I'm back in the area. Keep up the great work.

WARNING ‼ IF YOU ALREADY WORK OUT HERE:!…read more Heavily scented air fresheners like the kind Marshall uses are known carcinogens and linked in studies to hormonal and reproductive concerns! I was really interested in joining this gym because I like their approach. It reminded me a lot of a gym I went to in Washington where the owner would text me and check in on me if I hadn't been there in a while. And they have a couple new coaches who seem exceptionally knowledgeable. But. And this is a big but. There's one major problem: They use a very pungent air freshener. It's so strong and overpowering it makes me feel nauseous and/or lightheaded. And it makes it impossible for me to work out and breathe heavily in the gym. What's weird is a lot of these reviews mention the gym smells really good. The air freshener smell is identical to a hotel I stayed at in Lovelock NV that had a casino and was trying to squash the smell of cigarettes. It's not a clean fresh smelling "scent". It's like the "plug in" version of an industrial HVAC system. Or like those super strong car air fresheners. It's really too bad. I would have loved to work out here. Must mention: Coach Kenzie is amazing. Marshall, I'm begging you: Please stop using that air freshener!!!!

Around 3pm there are quite a bunch of high school students working out (including me). No, people don't film their friends doing sets, no, nobody is barefoot. The machines aren't sticky because you get a RAG and spray to wipe them down if they are ever left with sweat. The staff members are very pleasant, and are present during the times that are displayed on the front desk. If you're all about gym etiquette and are don't like grunting then go ahead and go to planet fitness where that grunting won't be heard over the lunk alarm, jeez. Better yet, get a pair of noise cancelling headphones or earbuds. The staff members clean and vacuum the gym as well as the bathrooms daily before they leave to go home, as this is a 24-hour gym. If there's someone using the machine you need then it's as simple as asking "how many sets do you have left?" and then being patient as said person finishes their workout. Yes, you may see high school students working out in groups and waiting for their friends to do their sets before continuing theirs, just pop a question and you'll get the machine in a few minutes. No, we don't bite. The gym was recently remodeled and looks far different than it does in the displayed photos. There are many more machines than there were a few months ago. There is also an upstairs where you can do yoga and other sort of workouts. There are many options for cardio and there are usually enough machines for everyone since there are so many. There are fans all around the gym that keep it nice and cool inside, it also usually smells good due to the staff cleaning so much. This is the perfect place to improve yourself and your quality of life, go ahead and give it a shot. Pausing and cancelling memberships are also very easy as you don't sign your soul away (unlike other gyms). One recommendation I have is about the music played in the gym, it could be a little better. However, since I am very sensible I bring my own noise cancelling headphones if I want to listen to something else. Thank you for the staff for being very helpful, and thank you to the manager for being very kind.

PLEASE READ!! I was a member at this gym for years and last…read moreyear I enrolled my two sons in their daycare program. After taking them to the daycare at the Meridian location for a few months, we had a horrific incident that has left my wife and I traumatized- we will never return to their facilities or have our children anywhere near their childcare establishments. I finished my workout and I approached the daycare where I noticed one of the ladies that works there holding my 2 year old son. She stated to me that he had been crying and that he was able to "get out of the daycare But they managed to get catch him before exiting the gym". I didn't think much of it. A couple days went by before one of the ladies that works at the daycare reached out to my wife through social media out of guilt stating that Villa Sports staff were not being truthful. She informed my wife that my 2 year old son walked out of the daycare without anyone noticing he was gone. She stated that an older gentleman who saw my son in the parking lot alerted the daycare staff who had no clue that he was even gone. we later found out the staff member who located my son found him on the back corner of the parking lot, furthest from the entrance, walking distance from the freeway. At this point my wife and I were devastated and demanded that we meet with Villa Sports management. Villa Sports Management lied about everything, first not notifying us that our child had left without anyone's knowledge. They falsified the incident report- did not allow us to view it immediately and did not allow us to view secuirty footage without their damage control admin making a game-plan first. When we met with their management, the meeting was very defensive and little accountability was taken. They never once mentioned that my child was found in the parking lot, until we confronted them about the information we received. Tom, the manager at the location got upset with his staff for giving us any information about the incident. I am writing this review to caution all parents- we are very lucky that our son was not hit by a car or taken from us. We will never go near a Villa Sports again.
