I initiated contact via Yelp, and they responded to my residence within 90 minutes, promptly restoring full functionality. They provided a comprehensive overview of the issues affecting my system, which led me to decide on a new system installation. They commenced the installation at 7:30 AM this morning and completed the work efficiently, leaving me no opportunity to offer them lunch. I firmly believe this company merits a five-star rating. Prior to engaging their services, I reviewed their ratings on other platforms and found them consistently near 5.0 across all other applications, with the exception of Yelp. Therefore, I can confidently state that they are underrated on Yelp. This has unequivocally been the finest service experience I have had in a considerable time. read more

Service technician was good and very courteous. However, when it comes to charging for parts and services, this company uses deceptive practices. On the most recent visit, they attempted to charge us for parts that were under warranty. Once they were called out on this issue, it took days to resolve and at final resolution, my cost was still at 65% of the total bill. This cost was strictly for the installation of the single part which took 10 minutes (the initial visit was covered under a service contract). When challenged, they stated that the remaining charge on the bill only reflected the installation of the single part. I call it "smoking mirrors!" Outrageous! read more

Terrible experience, terrible communications. My furnace is only functioning intermittently for a week now with temps dropping into the 50s. Update has been out, twice, no resolution. The last time the tech was there was Tuesday and they said I'd receive a call on Wednesday morning, with a plan to address the issue. It's 2 days later, no phone call, no email. I had to contact another company because it's getting cold in the house and I don't think Update is ever going to call. After waiting 2 days, I sent an email and then the following occurred: The owner, Jason, just called me and yelled at me because of my "impatience." My house has been without consistent heat for 6 days now, with temps in the 50's and the fact that they haven't fixed it, nor called as promised it is "my problem." He literally accused me of being impatient, even though they didn't return calls as committed. He has taken zero accountability Furthermore, he said, "We have 18,000 customers, I don't care about 1 customer." Clearly, that final statement is true. Update does not care about 1 customer who hasn't had consistent heat for a week. Hopefully YOU aren't that one customer. read more

So I needed service on my furnace. I looked at other companies and yet I couldn't get someone to come in a reasonable time frame. So I decided to call Update. What I appreciated was that they were VERY direct with service. I saw given a time when they could come (about 2-3 hours) and low & behold, they were there. All I needed was some routine maintenance. All was well until they found a simple fuse problem. There were a coupe other minor problems as well. I was expecting to pay $500+ or more. I didn't pay anywhere near that. I told other companies what my problem was and each said it could cost $350-$500 but wasn't the case here. With all that needed to be done, I was at $275. Fair enough. Prompt, courteous and professional. I'd use them again if I needed service again. Straight, not chaser!!!! read more

How do I get Jason to come out and do the work? Last time it was Matt, who worked fast and was done by lunch time. The scheduler on the phone said the work would be $125/hr but when I asked he said "What I did, must be worth at least a grand." WTF?? First of all, I'll say I'm more inclined to write a bad review than a good review, and I don't write reviews often. My parent's furnace broke down with negative temps up ahead. Called Update and they dispatched a tech immediately, which is great. That's the only good thing in this review. When the tech arrived, he was pretty rude. I took him to the furnace, which he immediately opened up. He accused someone of tampering with the wiring and said it was a, "hot mess." Well, the last time someone modified anything was actually Update themselves when they installed an a/c a couple summers ago (big mess, didn't work, multiple techs sent, this is not a review about that lousy experience). After the tech tampered with wires quickly, he stated there was a big electrical issue. No power to the thermostat (was working fine prior to him arriving) and then he started talking cost - that we were "halfway to a new furnace." Said we needed brand new everything, includIng a thermostat because it was likely also "shorted" (it's a Nest smart thermostat never any issues). Okay, this made me sus. So, his tone was very condescending and rude. I told him to just fix the furnace because money is tight and a patch job is more what I'm looking for. This got him going into financing options and saying he could get a furnace in same day (even though he said he had to move fast and get to the next job and this would take him too long). After declining, he proceeded to fix the wiring, replaced the board and blower motor. Got everything up and running while he was sighing loudly, clearly annoyed. Funny thing - he had everything required to fix the issue, which cost $868. A new furnace would be way, way more. When it came time to pay, my mother sent my sister to get cash (tech said he had 30 mins left). After about 10 mins, he wrapped up and said he needed the money immediately or we'd get charged extra. I paid with a credit card because the tech was being super rude to my mother, stating "I have a family to get home to, too," and "you should've had the money already or sent your daughter earlier." I get it's Covid, it's cold, and nobody wants to work, but I would rather freeze to death and die instead of calling Update again for any service. They've lost a customer, and I'll be sure to never recommend them. read more

Apparently the technician Jason that came out is also the owner. Right off the bat he was super rude and abrasive. When we told him we just wanted to pay whatever the cost was for him to come out, he said "I guess your husband just didnt like what I had to say". I said "no we deal with people all day everyday and I think he just didnt like your attitude". He said "great thats fine give me my $98 and ill be on to the next one". He talked to us like we are stupid. We just bought this house, and Its absolutely in our budget to completely replace both systems, as we thought that might be the case anyways. We also have 3 other properties currently that we need systems for that we wanted to discuss with him while he was here. But we didnt get past the first 5 minutes. We will be replacing both systems in this house, just not with this company. read more

We had Update Heating and Cooling install a new 95% efficient furnace along with all new ductwork. They filled in HVAC vents that were run in the slab of the house and also put new vents for my bath fans. When Jason first arrived he was very confident, knowledgable and fully answered all of my questions. He offered the best price and also made sure we understood the rebate process through Nicor. His crew was very polite. They covered all the floors where they were working. All of the work is very professional. I have 0 regrets. I held off posting a review as I wanted to ensure everything worked properly after the initial install. If has been a couple of months and everything is running as well as the day it was installed. Jason was punctual on both occasions that I have called him out to check out what was wrong. On the completed job, it was in nw indiana, and he came out first for an estimate in the middle of winter and returned to replace a control unit in the 10 yo furnace... he did not even try to upsell or harrass me to to change the system. We were in a dispute with the neighbor's insurance as their house fire affected the system, so Jason volunteered to defer the $400 payment until the spring, when we could thoroughly test out the AC, to see if it needed to be changed. I mean, who would let $400 go, without even knowing me! On a second time I asked him to come out to another property, his quote was much cheaper than any other parties I asked for quotes. Unfortunately, upon my boss' recommendation, I used his neighbor's service, trusting on his recommendation, but was thoroughly dissatisfied with them. We just bought a house that was built in the 50's and it still had all of the original HVAC. My old man recommended I call Jason from Update Heating and Air. He is never off on his recommendations and this was no exception. Jason was friendly, very straight forward, gave me a very reasonable quote and replaced both AC and furnace quickly. I was so pleased with his work that when my AC failed at my rental property I called him immediately. Once again he was very straight forward, presented my options to me and replaced the AC unit quickly. My AC broke these guys came out and recommended I replace the unit. I picked out the unit I wanted and they installed it and broke it while installing it. Not to mention they didn't even install the unit I selected. When I called them out on it they said they didn't have the unit I wanted. The price however magically remained the same. Then over the course of two weeks they were out every other day trying to repair the unit without replacing it. The unit was Brand new. They finally got my junk yard unit working but not before damaging my water heater and flooding my basement. Instead of using these guys I recommend throwing a stack of hundreds at any car driving down the street and go sit by your AC or furnace and wait for it to magically be replaced. read more

We called Update to our home for service on our a/c unit. Jason Rakowski was already at the home and standing over the unit. Without touching our unit (that was working early morning), I walked up on him with a screwdriver down in our fan blades, now stating that the unit is froze up and needs to be fully replaced at $7,000!!! I stated that we don't have the money for that and suggested to repair our unit. Then it was stated that the fan motor froze up and the cost will be $625 plus the $98 service call........"but when I get in there, it will most likely all freeze up and you'll still need a new one" at $7,000. I asked him to wait, went inside to check online. The condenser fan motor is available for $100 at nearby shops. When I went back out to Jason, I asked why the 600% markup. He then stated that we're paying for his time, with an attitude and that it would be like "taking a cab 20 miles each way?" and "I make $70-$80 per hour". Their business is approx 2 miles from our home! He then got more of an attitude, stating we need a new unit at $7,000 (with labor). When I pointed at the fan motor with three wires, and a 4-screw plate, and stated this will take 10 minutes at best. He sarcastically stated, that's our time. I then had to write a $98 check, for a service call (which is fine), but the entire experience from appearance to his customer service was completely shocking! We did not have him do our service, instead paid $98 for him to stick a screw driver into our top grate and fan blades with his pants hanging down below his bottom. I am a professional myself, and customer care is number #1. Result: I left a voice mail to get a more clear view on the $700 charge (600% markup), with no response. With this type of service, demanding we should replace the unit, for presentation - or lack of, and complete disrespect, stating we need a new unit (they'll finance us, we can just use our credit card) and not wanting to do the repair called for, we had to pay the service call of $98? Had this been my company, and the voice mail left, I would be calling the customer directly back and refunding the service call fee. I have never been treated as if I don't know what Im talking about when asking the appropriate questions. This is still causing me great anxiety 24 hours later. We have since purchased the part at a nearby shop for $141, and replaced ourselves in 20 minute, never having done this before. Im still not quite sure how they justify well over $600 in labor for something that would've taken them 5-10 minutes to switch out. At this point, with the way we were treated, I would like a service call refund of $98.00. Poor service to say the least. :-( read more

Scheduling issues...Horrendous pricing. 1.)Was told between 1-4PM and that I will receive a call 45 minutes ahead of time. My tenant received nothing. This was non emergency 2.)I called in to inquire and they said they will ask the tech to call me when he is on his way. 3.)Again nothing 4.)Later that night I finally get a call when the tech is already there saying that capacitor is broken and that it needs to be swapped. 5.)He said service charge was 95$. Okay little high compared to other companies but I was okay with it. The next thing the said was the total was $373. so basic math tells me that the capacitor was 373-95 = $278. I am a property manager so this is for a client but I have an engineering degree and I have used a multi meter to fix furnaces and air conditioners before and I told the gentlemen there that that pricing was utterly ridiculous. I have used various companies before that range from 120$ to 200$. 350+ was ridiculous. Capacitor takes about five minutes to check and that includes taking the screws off the ac panel. The 35,5,370v can be found locally for 11$ and online for less than 10$ I run a business and I understand 200-500% markups but %2500 markup with a slightly higher than average service charge is too over the top. The gentlemen on the phone says all the companies charge that much and that's just not true. I'm sure your service is great but the scheduling miscommunication and pricing leaves a lot to be desired. read more
