Called the office to explain exactly the driving skills we wanted the instructor to focus on and asked them to note that with the instructor. We arrived early at the Bethesda office. Office was closed with a sign saying their instructors will meet you there if you have a scheduled lesson. When the lesson time came and went, I called the first posted phone number, which was out of service. Not a good sign. The second number was answered, and we were then contacted by the instructor who had parked on the street outside -- the first of multiple communication issues. The instructor had no idea why we had scheduled a lesson. Compared to "the competition" in our area (the one with ex-cops, which we previously used), the instructor was unfriendly and unwelcoming --- not a good thing with a new, un-confident driver. After the lesson, my daughter told me that the instructor hardly gave her feedback while she was driving, gave her turn and other directions at the last second, and told her to slow down instead of speeding up to be closer to highway speed when she was merging onto the highway. When she first entered the car, the instructor was playing loud talk-radio. When my daughter asked if he could turn it off (at least she had the sense not to be playing talk-radio during a driving lesson); he turned it down, not off, until she asked again. I don't expect miracles from a driving school, but we know from experience that Habesha's service and professionalism was far below the competition.

Did I ever see myself as a turnabilist or even interested in turntables? No…read more Are circular objects now very appealing to me? Yes, ever since my first baby scratch, I've been trying to scratch anything in a circular form around me. Not just records, or cds, I'm talking dinner plates and frisbees. This was the best new years resolution I've followed up on: dropping the needle. Most of my dj friends back home are all digital house djs, so turntables are completely new. Most of dj'ing is completely new to me, so I took the intro class. The classes use the Serato Scratch Live software. I arrived early for class my first day, and was allowed to play around with the equipment. I was a rough start cause I had some issues figuring out the screen display, and I was stuck in the Gucci Mane bin for a good twenty minutes. Gucci Mane=worst southern rapper ever, it was distressing. The rest of the set up involves a state of the art mixer and two turntables. Then the skilled instructors took over, and we learned how to scratch, radio dj and beat match. I highly recommend classes with DJ As One. He kinda sounds like a grandfather dj (he's really young actually), with his stories of back in day. All about how they used to drag heavy crates and buy two copies of the same record to mix, and how us kids have it so much better these days with the software. I would recommend the classes to anyone interested in music. As a side note you have to walk through Bach 2 Rock (a music school to get here), be prepared to walk through hallways of high school rock bands complimenting each other on how they sound exactly like Fugazi (eye roll).

Beat Refinery is a school within a school, located in Bach 2 Rock. They offer a 6 week courses in Intro to DJ for $375, and will have more advanced courses in the future. The classes meet weekly for a couple hours, and you can sign up for additional practice time at a first-come-first serve basis for free if you are taking a class. I had my first class last night, and let me tell you: if you love music and technology--this is something you should try. Each student gets their own DJ set up---which includes computer, turntables, mixer, headphones, and speaker. From what I am told, the equipment is top of the line. The whole class is built around learning Serato Scratch Live, the computer program that allows you to mix, scratch, and beat juggle with the best of them (if you have the skills). The computers are loaded with tunes, and you can also bring in your own music to suit and create you own style. Additionally, the teachers are pro's. My class is taught by DJ As-1 and DJ Stylus Chris, who were both very helpful and energetic in helping us newbies learn the basics. At the end of the 6 week course we are all expected to be able to do a 3-5 minute set and answer some basic questions about the DJ'ing So while I think I have a few song ideas up my sleeve---I still need to work on my DJ name....time to get to my homework.

I purchased 1 voucher and it had a expiration date of 6/25/2012 but when I called on 9/15 to use the remainder of my sessions, I was told by the owner, Mr. Jimmie Parker that it was a typo and that they expired 8/31/2011. After asking Mr. Parker to honor the expiration date that was clearly printed on the voucher that I purchased, he told me that all he could do was offer me 10% on more training sessions. Why would I give this disreputable business more of my hard earned money when he doesn't even respect the money I've already spent on his services. No Thank you. Think twice before you patronize a place that does not keep their word. Bad business practices to say the least.

SpanishBlackbelt - Typical Small Group Spanish Class

I have improved much more in 8 weeks with Spanish Blackbelt than in a semester at a junior college course. There is an online placement quiz that helps you select which class is appropriate for you. Here is what I really like about Spanish Blackbelt: The classes are casual; we meet at the local Starbuck's that is very close to my house. The class is small; there are only two of us. There is homework and it can be challenging. There is a strong focus on grammar and spelling. It can be daunting at times, but it is all online and it is very well organized with lots of visual aids. The teacher, Alejandro, is great. He is charming and warm and very encouraging. We speak only Spanish during the class and I've never been made to feel awkward about my rather clumsy skills. I'm only half-way through the Yellow level and have decided to continue to the next level. I truly wish I could wake up one morning and simply know how to speak Spanish. But, I think Spanish Blackbelt might be the next best way to become a Spanish speaker.
