Today was my third visit to Up Dog. This replica of a 50's lunch bar brings back memories of Woolworth's and Katz from the 1950's. The hot dog and fried onions were great. The worker was conversational and friendly. Before I finished my meal, another employee arrived. They both seemed to get on well and were obviously enjoying their work. read more

Here is a professional review from a college educated chef. Since I was a kid I have LOVED hot dogs. When you find a high quality dog you can expect clean full flavored beef, a lovely snap and a plethora of flavor. I have had dogs from NY, Detroit, STL, Nashville and more. I found Up Dog and decided to test the place out and see what it had to offer. Sadly I found that this is one of the lowest quality dogs I have ever had "think always save". The bread was cheap and offered no sweet quality to offset the full "beef" flavor. The toppings were nothing special. My dog had cheap fresh from the can chili, cheap mustard and average onions. I will note the onions were fresh and crisp but lacked a complete well rounded addition. But the worst part was the dog itself. The dog was very low quality and offered no excitement. What a let down. I could have bought the ingredients for the meal at the dollar store for $3 and made 10 of them. Here is my detailed review.... Cleanliness - 2 out of 5. I noted several dirty tables and the floor was pretty bad as well. However the business was slow so it should have been clean Decor- 5 out of 5. They definitely did a good job at bringing a fun retro feel to the business. Service- 1 out of 5. The two young men who took my order seemed angry and irritable. One even huffed his breath at me when I did not leave a tip on the ticket. Little did he know I pay cash tips AFTER I eat. I do it to help them as I understand the tips are often taxed. Needless to say they did not get a tip. Food options- 4 out of 5. Many choices of different dogs. I would have liked to have seen a few "crazy" options to offset the menu. Maybe a brot and krot? Price- 1 out of 5. For the quality of food they offer the dog should be around $3. It was $5 without sides. Quality- 1 out of 5. Food was tasteless and to be blunt it was terrible. What a waste for such a cute business. I decided to rate the business overall 2 stars. I feel that they have a great idea but a poor product. If they would focus on getting a high quality frank in the place they would mop up the money! I would NOT recommend eating here due to the fact you can prepare the same meal at home for a fraction of the price. Whats needed for improvement? Keep this place clean! Buy a sweeter bread. These things taste like they come in a pack of 10 for 99 cents, the cheapest kind you look for when attending the company picnic. This is one of our favorite places to chow down. It's on the beautiful Independence Square and it really has that "1950s-Pleasantville" feel to it with the retro decor. But let's talk about the hot dogs. Delicious! Fresh, never standing. It never takes a lot time to fix our dogs. I usually pair mine with fries. He usually gets onion rings with his dog. Love the seasoning on the fries. Onion rings are a must-try! I usually get the New York Dog or two mini naked dogs. He loves the Chicago Dog. My only criticism (which is actually positive) is that I'd love to see maybe some more hot dog ideas! Staff is always cordial and nice. We have never had any issues or a bad experience. I'm not a hot-dog lover, but my daughter is. She ordered a dog covered in toppings and a side of fries to match. I enjoyed my Up Dog with a fork and a knife. Here's the good part...my daughter had forgotten to ask for extra cheese on her fries, and I sent her to the counter with cash to pay for it. The server refused to accept her cash, and warmed up her fries with some extra cheese. I thought that was really nice customer service from the young people behind the counter. Because of that service, we've been back. My teen still loves Up Dog, but she has yet to convert her mom into a hot-dog lover. read more

I remember visiting when the Independence Square had a hot dog eating contest!!! Up Dog provided the dogs. A professional food eater, yes people train for this stuff, won. It was very exciting. I have taken my kids a few other times. This doesn't really fit into the fast food category of food and if you'd rather have something other than gourmet hot dogs, then it's not for you. As a family, we really like Updog. It's got great atmosphere, it's clean, it's in a beautiful location and the food is fantastic. The Chicago dog especially is good. A bit messy but you can break down and use a knife and fork if you must. The dogs are snap when break them, they are juicy and very flavorful. The fries are so good. They have a great seasoning and no ketchup is needed with those babies. It's truly Americana. They take their time in fixing your meal. They don't rush it because they want it to be right. Drove by this cute little diner - back tracked to have lunch. The food was horrible and pricey. We had a Chicago dog and a Detroit dog, each with a side of onion rings and a drink. Total ticket for two of us was $17.24. The hot dogs had tough skin and the chili was awful. The onion rings were extremely greasy and tasted like they were fried in stale oil. Neither of us could eat much of the meal. Never again - could have enjoyed a pleasant lunch somewhere else for that price. read more
