I came to Raleigh from Oklahoma for a conference and inadvertently left my dress shoes at home,…read moremaking boots my only option to wear with a suit. "Rough-looking" is a massive understatement for the condition of my boots, so I went to Ealdwine for some shoe polish, and saw that the product had changed quite a bit over the past few years. I had a few questions about leather conditioner, how much polish to use, etc. (stuff like that), and Mr. Gray took the time to show me everything, on my boots at that. The difference is tremendous, and I'm not JUST talking about how my boots look now. For a business owner to take time out of his day, literally get his hands dirty, and go to such lengths for a customer who might come to Raleigh every five years or so... It speaks volumes about Mr. Gray as a person and business owner. I'm now more informed, equipped with some really good polish, and won't feel so embarrassed about wearing beat-up boots with a suit. Another cool thing, assuming most will be looking/shopping for more than shoe polish, the store's beautifully designed, and chockablock with some of the finest in men's clothing and beautiful footwear. Mr. Gray personally helped with the design in many of the latter (Alden's handmade in Massachusetts), so I definitely feel like I was in good hands, and had definitely come to the right place. Great owner. Top notch products. Perfect service. Great experience.

Forty years later, I am still a client. He has made custom suits, trousers, and tuxedos for me. I trust his judgement completely when it comes to dressing me in clothing that is both classic and stylish. The personal attention that Bruce gives you is unmatched. I feel as that I am paying for Bruce's expertise and good taste....and the clothing is just part of that. We are very fortunate to have such a fine men's clothing store in Raleigh as Liles Clothing Studio.

A friend recently payed a compliment that meant a great deal to me; not only was she impressed by a…read moreparticular pair of shoes I was wearing, but also confided that she had come to regard me as someone who took a great deal of care in how they look and as someone who dresses quite well. To this I have Liles to thank. Simply put, a better men's store in the state does not exist. Bruce, the visionary and owner, puts in the time and stays ahead of brand trends, stocking items I see nowhere else. I usually like to take my time when I'm there, and Alex, the gentleman I've known working there as long as I've been a patron, offers his insight and expertise to me more than anyone else, patiently anticipating what I'm looking for while stretching my boundaries beyond what I might normally try on. Nowhere else can I go shopping for clothes alone- their staff has a better eye for fit than I or anyone I else might drag along. The negative for some may be the price points. I simply put a budget on clothes for the year, rarely buy elsewhere, and make a point of buying top quality essentials here. For me there are no negatives. I wind up with fewer clothes that I wear often and truly enjoy. There may be comparable selection and quality in metropolitan areas, but no other store knows me by name. No other store knows my family by name. Go there.

I asked what happened. He told me an unleashed aggressive dog was standing directly inside the entrance and loudly snarled and growled at him as he tried to enter the store. The female owner of the dog&store told him the dog was a "rescue" and that it didn't take a liking to men. I have documented allergies to dogs and also fear them for their unpredictable nature as what happened when he casually walked into the store. It's a shame because he probably would have bought me something warm to wear if the dog had not been there growling at him. Also, I only buy second hand from smoke&pet free homes/stores. *Message to management: I've never owned a clothing store, but I've worked at one. It's very important for customers to feel safe and welcomed when trying on clothes and window shopping. In what world is it considered civilized to have an unleashed, untrained and aggressive dog positioned at the head of the store? You are actively discriminating against men shopping at your store by bringing this dog to work. Men like to surprise their girlfriend or wife or mother with something nice to wear from time to time. If you don't have liability insurance for potential dog bites when a man enters your store it might be time to get some. Or, better yet, just install a modern security system and leave your aggressive dog at home or bring it to a shelter. You will be doing the city of Raleigh and it's citizens a favor.

Not worth the price. Very frustrating experience making my husband's tuxedo for the wedding. The…read moretuxedo did not fit well. Caroline was unhelpful and quite rude when we asked for changes. The process was custom to the extent you can change the color of the buttons but when it comes to the actual fit of the tux (the most important part) it felt like there were templates that they stuck to and anything outside of that to make the tux actually look tailored to the person was too much to ask.

Tldr; highly recommend for anyone looking to buy a well-fitting, quality suit / tux at any price…read morepoint. Beautiful showroom with phenomenal customer service. The business model is similar to Indochino, but the Alton Lane experience is far superior. Caroline is the main point of contact and knows their sizing and products like the back of her hand - she is knowledgeable but not pushy. Since she's the main point of contact, you won't get passed around, and she takes full ownership of making sure your suit comes out perfectly. Lots of nice customization available even for the lower price points, and Caroline is a master at getting a perfect fit even for the cheaper standard sizing. Appointments are a must, but easy to schedule. The long version with more details: Buying Experience - While AL offers a great online ordering experience, the experience of going in person to the showroom in Raleigh (Cameron Village) is well worth it. You can browse the store, but if you're looking to make a purchase, highly recommend making an appointment ahead of time via their website. Appointments are an hour, and Caroline will walk you through the process, take measurements, and ultimately help place your order. She has fabric swatches available, which is important because they can look quite different than online. She's also fantastic at knowing their sizing and measurements, and will know exactly how to order to ensure a perfect fit (which may not always be what the online size chart suggests). She provides helpful recommendations for all the customization without being overbearing, and we appreciated that she was engaged and helpful even though we were looking to purchase one of their cheaper suits. Suit came in within about 2 weeks - you schedule a 30 minute fitting appointment to ensure you like everything or if you might need tailoring. We needed some minor tailoring, which was turned around promptly. Price - we weren't looking to spend a ton of money, but wanted to get a quality, well-fitting suit. AL offers very high end fully custom options (think $1k+), but they also have a number of "standard" options for reasonable price points ($399+). The main differences seemed to be that the fully custom is truly cut-to-size (they make a pattern specifically for your body) and will have larger selection of fabric styles. The "standard" options are your normal size availability and have less fabric selections, but we still found them to be high quality, and Caroline is so great at what she does that the fit of the standard styles is still great (and she kindly comp'd any tailoring). You can browse online to get a sense of pricing, but I still recommend ordering in person. There are also frequently promo codes (ex. 20% off for first time purchases) that can be used in store and can add up to a sizeable discount. Jos A. Bank is across the street, so we stopped in there for price comparison. Their off-the-rack suits were a bit cheaper, but generally require quite a bit of tailoring (additional charge). They offer a custom line of suits, most of which were more expensive than AL, and every custom option was a separate charge rather than being included (ex. $25 for lining, etc.). Overall, we felt like AL was a much better bang for the buck.
