Okay, so you know right off the bat this is a high-end store and the clothing will not be cheap. I mean it is decades old and run by the Julian family, as in fashion designer Alexander Julian and his sister. We don't often pop in but decided to stop by while walking up and down Franklin Street. I had bought a pair of (expensive) socks from them years ago, and on a whim I bought a similar pair. I considered it a Christmas present to myself. The fashion and offerings are colorful and of good taste. The staff were pleasant, even though their register printer was not working, so they texted me my receipt. Julian's is very Old South, and very Carolina. Most locals know that Julians is responsible for designing the signature argyle pattern that appears on the Carolina Basketball uniforms, as well as outfitting every Carolina Coach since Dean Smith. Julian's attention to high fashion with a unique southern twist is flawless. The store (recently move across the street to where Rugby once was) is well stocked with suites from sear sucker to black, shirts of every pastel variety and your latest in bow tie or neck tie fashion. Though it's Franklin Street location might suggest otherwise, this shop is certainly not catering to the college student's needs or budget. Prices are through the roof, which makes it more of a window shopping experience for most. At times I've felt that the staff was stuffy and too high-brow for my taste. Julian's offers a high quality product that is a reflection of the old southern tradition that is alive and well in the Tar Heel State. Sifting through the bow ties and cumber buns is fun even if your wallet doesn't allow for the purchase. And if you can afford this brand, it's certainly top of the line. Due to my lack of richness I've never been able to actually purchase anything here, but whenever I'm feeling particularly jaunty I go in to check out the merchandise, chat with the staff, and make pretend like I'm a trust fund baby. It makes for an entertaining half-hour or so. This stuff is the epitome of alma-mater-patriotic-yuppie-chic (that term is copyrighted 2008 by William J., don't try to steal it). They love their argyle and bow ties and wingtips and so on. You'll definitely walk out of there looking like you belong at the country club, which is a very useful look at many times and often quite attractive. If that's what you're going for, then stop on by. Note that I said "country club" and not "boardroom." This is not business apparel, more like after-golf apparel. Know your market. read more

Oh how painful it is, as an NCSU alumni, to give Julian's a five-star rating. However. This is a true class act. Maybe the parking situation could be better, and yes it's expensive, but how can anyone with a tie to UNC not have stopped in here at least once? I visited Julian's to buy my father a tie for his 61th birthday. He went to UNC, I went to State, and we have enjoyed our spirited rivalry. I walked into Julian's on a whim while visiting my family over Xmas because I like to touch all the expensive clothes that I cant afford because I love how nice fabric feels. (Yes, I do this a lot, is that weird?!) Everyone knows Julian's has really nice, classic, classy Southern garb. But, apparently, they also have really really good sales. I grabbed 2 Longchamp purses (dark hunter and dark maroon) for 60% off. That's right, 60% off. Longchamp purses never go on sale, ever, anywhere. This place definitely serves a distinct market but even if you weren't the president of your fraternity (like my husband) you can still find some basic dress clothes. He was in a pinch and needed trousers rather than his usual khakis he wears because of an MD dominated conference he had to attend. He was able to go in and quickly with personable assistance find what he needed. They were even able to hem them with short notice as well. The staff is quite approachable and friendly and we would use them again. They even have some clothes for ladies who lunch. Maybe I'll go by and pick something out for a Yelp Lunch Bunch outing. I just left Julian's and had another great experience. I'm a bit biased as I worked there in the '90s, BUT I had a recent clothes buying experience that was not a good one in a similar type of store in Chicago. When I'm in Chapel Hill, I look forward to shopping at Julian's. I'm not a big shopper as a Dad with 3 kids so shopping like this isn't something that I do often. Just look at Roy Williams. The man is perfectly styled and just about the classiest guy around (OK except that crazy tie he wore for the Kansas-UNC Final Four game in 2008 which was horrible). So really can you expect anything less from Julian's, the store that outfits him? But Julian's is not just a men's store, they have an excellent selection of women's clothing too. Although pricey, the selection is top-notch as is the service. They carry Look From London tights which I love and have not been able to find in NC. Yes, a lot of the clothing is preppy, but in a good way, and really it's all about how you style it. Remember, if the Old Well emblazoned khakis are a little much for you (as they are for me), there are still a lot of other unique and classic finds here. read more

I walked into this clothing store and the "old woman" sitting at the desk must have looked me up and down a dozen times as if I didn't belong or couldn't afford to shop this store. Julian's has classic men's style defined to the nines. I love to see finely dressed men without a doubt. If you're going to shop Julian's come with cash, credit or debit card fully stocked because you're going to drop some serious dollars. It's a great place to get your dad or grandad a nice bow tie or tie-- if your college wallets allow. A very pristine establishment, that has been a part of the Chapel Hill community for decades, it has surely stood the test of time and I'm sure will continue to do so. read more

Ask Jake said, the Julian's have had their shop in Chapel Hill since the 60's and Alexander recently took over his parents shop and moved it to the old Rugby location. We wandered in today, and were greeted by men wearing and giving out "Beat Kansas" pins. Mr. Julian also introduced himself and invited us to his ham biscuit and champagne reception for game day! The selection at once both classic and lively (I think its called "Modern Traditional" - think seer sucker and Vineyard Vines) The staff is approachable and reasonably helpful. And just to echo Jake - it's not basic college student fare, but worth the splurge if you can afford it. (Like a bow tie and silk knots for a special event!) Julian's is a go-to men's store for residents of Chapel Hill (and the surrounding area). The customer service is always exceptional, and the selection is great for a smaller store. If your size isn't currently in stock, the sales people are more than willing to help you special order it. I've never once had a bad experience at Julian's since living in Chapel Hill, even if the prices tend to be high. I always found the previous location of Julian's to be rather dark and stuffy, so I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped by the new(ish) location the other day. There's way more space and light, plus a little more product if I'm not mistaken. I'm personally not a fan of the Southern preppy look, but there's a great selection of button-ups, ties, sports jackets, and suiting. They also sell special Croakies, emblazoned with Julian's argyle logo. I think the True Blue line is a great idea, since Julian's is very influenced by the Carolina culture anyway, but those items are terribly overpriced. Those Old Well cufflinks are cute, but the polos are like $40. Julian's is great if you're looking for country club gear, but for Carolina apparel I say run a few doors down to Johnny T-Shirt or Shrunken Head. read more

Received two belts from Julian's for the holidays, unfortunately in the wrong size. While the belts were nice, Julian's offered no options for returns, exchanges, or store credit, even when I offered to pay for shipping or bring them back in person. Multiple contacts offered no options for resolution, just them repeating they would not be helping at all. Will not be shopping at this store again. Reasonably nice merchandise, terrible customer service. read more
