A longtime institution featuring UNC gear and items. On game days they will also offer free buttons. It can get very crowded on game days so if you want more time to peruse and shop, come when it's less busy. I believe the same family has been running this shop for decades, and they do have sales on older or discontinued items. I hope they'll stay on Franklin Street for a long, long time. read more

UNC gear gone wild. This boutique is a Franklin Street staple with everything you could ever hope to have in the color of Carolina Blue. The variety of their selection is great, and they really have some unique and clever items. However, when I'm looking for Carolina gear I like to have the official brand name stuff rather than the gimmicky slogans plastered on to Carolina Blue, and Shrunken Head is short on items of the official sort. Still, there is quite a bit to offer if you're looking for something UNC. If you're on your way to a game and looking for something to color an outfit missing Carolina Blue Shrunken Head is a great stop because they stock Carolina Blue buttons reading "Beat ______!" before all basketball and football games. These also make neat collectables for big games. If you're spending the day doing UNC, this is a fun stop, but I prefer Johnny T-shirt and Chapel Hill Sportswear. read more

You can tell this place has been here for many years. Packed full with a huge selection of Tar Heel clothes for men, women and children and chotchkies in a tiny, tiny store. This is a pretty cool store. They have a ton of stuff in such a small place. They have everything a Heel Fan could want and then some. It was a little overstuffed for me, but I found the shirt I was looking for and it was cheaper than it was elsewhere. i felt like the guy in the store was stalking me though. It was not busy and he didn't have anything to do, i guess. Anyway, next time i'm in town, I am going to stop at the Shrunken Head. Even though there are no shrunken heads inside. read more

If you are looking for Tarheal merchandise, this is the place. I work nearby, and anytime I walk down to Sutton's Drug Store I at least check what they have on display in the window. Small store but tons of stuff. Very friendly staff that tries very hard to help. Got a fantastic cold whether jacket there. It was a limited run of 250. A "roomy" 4X that fit me nicely when I usually have to get 5X for it to fit at all. Fantastic design job, and proportioned for large size people. Paid cash to get the discount and it was 145$. I typically spend around 100$ more for a cheap cold whether coat one size bigger. Usually more than 100 more. Thankfully the person working there pointed it to me out since she has seen me in their many times. I have also had an employee see me pass the door when she knew I was looking for a hard to get item and actually chase me down on the sidewalk to let me know they had gotten one for me. read more

Shrunken Head isn't my favorite place for Carolina gear, but they do occasionally have limited edition merchandise that you can't find anywhere else. I personally don't care if the apparel is officially licensed or not, but some of the more gimmicky stuff just looks cheap and thrown-together. The last time I was there the staff seemed kind of disinterested, but it's worth asking for help if you're looking for a particular item in the sea of light blue. Prices are comparable to the other independent UNC stores on Franklin St., but definitely cheaper than Student Stores. read more

ordered a shirt, got sent the wrong size. when I called they said they would call me and never did. I called them and they then asked me to pay for the return shipping. There is not a lot of diversity on the website or working within the store. It smells like cigarettes within the store and once I visited it smelled like a sewer. The store is very small and it seems like a glorified Etsy shop. I've bought things with holes in them. The owner is very demanding and abrasive which made the experience very unfriendly. Very cool store with awesome Carolina gear! Any time I am in Chapel Hill it's my first stop on Franklin Street. The staff here is extremely helpful and you can tell they really care. It's family owned so there's usually at least one family member in there which I think is pretty cool. Most the other stores seem to just have students running the them so it's pretty hit or miss on the organization of the store and the overall helpfulness. If your looking for Carolina clothing, or really about anything, this should be your first stop. They've been open for a really long time so they have memorabilia from all the years, that's about worth the trip in there by itself, for a trip down UNC memory lane. read more

If I could, I'd give them zero stars. I went into the Shrunken Head to look at a pair of earrings my daughter had seen and wanted for Christmas. I was curious about the style because I have had nothing but trouble with a certain kind, and this pair turned out to be that style. When I told the owner (who waited on me) that I've had three pairs like it, and all three have broken within several wearings, she basically told me I was wrong. And rather than trying to help me find another pair or make suggestions, it was clear that she wanted to be right, a most unpleasant attitude for a retailer. She turned me off so much that I'll never shop there again. On the other hand, I've had nothing but positive experiences with Johnny T-Shirt, where GAA members receive a discount. read more
