    New fur baby Baxter!

This is an updated review. I adopted a dog from unleashed. He has had some problems, including kennel cough and some pretty severe aggression discovered when I took the dog to the vet. I hadn't been given the dog's medical records so was having a hard time getting him established with his new vet and insurance, especially since I had to get his kennel cough treated. He got pretty sick with that. Ultimately his records were released to me, but they weren't directly given to me at the time of the adoption, which would have helped a lot. The adoption process was pretty hurried with not a lot of conversation. I wish the adoption counselor had spent just a little more time, although I know they're busy. The dog has some behavioral problems. He has fear-related aggression towards both people and dogs. I wish he had received a behavioral evaluation from someone with some expertise in dog behavior, and/or that any known history would have been discussed while meeting him. He's a wonderful dog and I'm glad I have him, but it would have been helpful to know what I was getting into up front. He's now going into intensive (and costly) day camp training, followed by the regular obedience classes you can and should do with any new dog. I'm glad I was able to give him a home willing and able to address his issues. It just would have been helpful to have the knowledge and medical records up front.

As much as it pains me to leave them a negative review, this is a must. They allowed me to take a cat home that was supposed to be under treatment for an upper respiratory infection AND that was positive for coccidia. The kitten has bloody stool and is sneezing. He clearly still has coccidia and an upper respiratory infection, neither of which I was told about when I adopted him. They don't email you the records until AFTER you adopt. Now, the kitten is here and has exposed the other kitten I also adopted yesterday. Highly unethical and shameful practice. This is the first time I have had an issue with their shelter, but to me, it's a big one. Now, this will need to be remedied on MY DIME as I live 3 hours away, so I can't simply return the kittens. When I called they said "they stopped the URI treatment" and when I responded with, "the vet said treatment was twice daily for 10 days on the paperwork" there was no answer for that. Nor any reason for allowing a kitten to suffer with coccidia causing bloody loose stool. Unleashed, treat your animals, and for God's sake- EDUCATE your staff.

I had a great experience, I arrived over the lunch hour and filled out a waiver to meet the pup I saw online. After a brief introduction to the team at Unleashed, I was escorted to a meet&greet room. The handler brought the pup into the room and explained the attributes of the dog. The history and temperament were discussed as well as what type of dog I was looking for. The free health exam at a Lenexa vet and free training class were offered if I decided to adopt the pup. The team uses an online app to process the adoption, and release the medical records and microchip info. The whole process took a few moments. We left with the sweetest pup, and are so happy we chose to adopt. Check out their website for available pups, and if you aren't sure which is right for you talk to their staff and they will introduce multiple pups to you/your family.

My husband and I met Koda at an event at a nearby Pet Supplies Plus. He's a wonderful dog. This rescue is not wonderful. He was never vetted while in their care even though they knew he was heartworm positive (according to records they received when they took him in). One good thing about this rescue is that they paid for his heartworm treatment. We're so confused and frustrated why they didn't take him to the vet or treat his heartworm before putting him up for adoption. I've never known a rescue to put an animal up for adoption that wasn't given a clean bill of health. It's not a matter of timing either. They had Koda for so long that they waived his adoption fee so obviously there was time for him to go through treatment. It seems so cruel to knowingly allow him to live with such a condition. When I expressed these concerns with the president, Jasmine, she was dismissive and defensive and then she completely ignored my two subsequent emails. Koda recently had his final vet appointment to test for traces of heartworm and he is clean! We like to say that we reached him from this rescue.

Unleashed is the best! I have been either adopting from them, volunteering for them, fostering for them or donating to them since 2015. Firsthand, I see them work their tails off day in and day out no matter if they're on "vacation", at home sick, in the middle of an ice storm or simply reporting for another long day at work. They always put the animals first and put their health, wellbeing and happiness at the forefront of all decisions made. If you're not sure which type of dog or cat you'd like to add to your home, fostering is a great option to help save a life and also "test" out if they're a good fit to stay with you forever! No gesture or donation is too small and they'll appreciate every little bit of help they get. My personal experience has been nothing but positive. The staff know the dogs and their personalities and are great at matching them to forever families. When I was a first time foster, I always had someone accessible to run questions by and was loaded with good information on the correct way to bring a new dog into my home, make them feel comfortable, the best way to leash train a dog etc. etc. They work with countless organizations and individuals to save as many lives as they possibly can. The number of animals they take in per year is mind blowing! Give them a try the next time you're looking to add a new pet to your home

Our new member of the family! Love him!

Not impressed. I think that there were good intentions in the beginning but those intentions shifted with their growth.

My boyfriend and I were looking to adopt another cat to be a companion for our first one…read more We went online and found a four year old cat named Katie through a lady on Craiglist. She had found Katie and had taken care of her. I talked to this lady for a week or so about Katie and we decided to meet at the PetsMart that she was being kept at. My boyfriend and I fell in love with her, and were ready to get the adoption going. We sat down at the adoption table and started filling out the forms. Then the Adoption lady and her daughter asked us how old we were. My boyfriend was 20, and I 19. We did not see that as a problem, and neither did Katie's finder, however the adopters were disgusted. As soon as they found out our ages, they wanted to get us out of their adoption place as soon as possible. Asking us questions in a snotty way, and being completely rude. We would have been great owners for Katie. I have been an animal lover my whole life, and worked at a PetsMart. I am an animal activist, and Katie would have gotten nothing but love. The adopters knew that, but once they found out that neither of us were 21, it was all over. The last thing the adopter said to me was "We will call you if you get approved for the adoption, but we don't call people who don't." HOW RUDE? The lady who found Katie talked to us afterwords and expressed her feelings towards Second Chance Pet Adoptions, and said that if she had known that they would treat great pet owners that way, she would not have asked for their help to find Katie a loving home. I called the Second Chance Pet Adoptions and left a voice mail a few days later inquiring about my application, and saying that if we did not get approved we would appreciate a call anyway because we wanted Katie to find a home. However, i never receive a call or e-mail or anything. We wanted to give a cat a second change. This cat was 4 years old, and most people want kittens. But we loved Katie. Adopting cats is a great thing to do. I am glad that there or organizations that do it. But, when someone pretty much spits in my face for being young, despite my aptness to adopt and love an animal, that place should be shut down or put under new management. It was absolutely absurd. So a few weeks later we went to Wayside Waifs, where the staff was super friendly and did everything that they could to help us find the right cat. They adopted to us the same day. We did fill out an application and were asked various questions, but they saw what kind of people we were, and that we would take care of any animal.

We purchased her puppy package for in-home training sessions with our French Bulldog, Greta. Not only did Pam teach us how to interact with her, but Greta LOVED her and learned so much from her visits. At only four months, Greta is now potty trained, comes on command, sits on command, gives, 'hi-fives,' is crate trained, started to learn how to go on walks with a harness, knows command, 'up,' and 'off,' can fetch, and we learned how to calm her when she gets over stimulated. She even began some skateboarding with her! Of course we have to put in the work to continue to in grain these things in a puppy, but I can't even begin to convey the wealth of knowledge Pam imparted on us, so that we could acclimate more into puppy life and so Greta fit into ours. Pam teaches the human as well as the dog giving you a wealth of information, going above and beyond so that you know why a dog does the things they do, how to manage the behavior, and how the dog will absorb the training. She eased my worries and I was pleasantly surprised how expertly she worked with little ones. I can't recommend her services enough.
