Great Plains SPCA is a fantastic no-kill animal shelter that quietly provides adoptions of dogs and cats rescued from across the Kansas City metro area. The Johnson County-based member of the big 3 that includes Wayside and KC Pet Project. We found our rescue puppy here and couldn't be happier with the process and location. Very accommodating for visiting with kids with spotless private rooms to socialize. We appreciated the overnight hold option where you pay (donate) a nominal amount to not feel rushed and ensure the whole family could sleep on it before coming back the next day for the homecoming. The shelter is often overshadowed by Wayside Waifs, which also does a great job, however this facility and team are excellent for both dogs and cats. The Merriam location also has a small retail store that you can gear up new adoptions. As you would expect, adoption fees (donations!) are much higher for puppies and kittens than the less cuddly teens and pre-teens. Note: In prior years they offered a veterinary office that was open to the public, but those services are now reserved only for the in-house clientele (ahem - bob barker...). Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays unless you're a dogcatcher

Am I a cute kitten, or the cutest kitten?

**warning -- shameless pull-at-the-heartstrings plug** I love cats. So I'm predisposed to be a sucker for a cute little kitten. But when I learned about a kitten and her two sisters who were dumped on the side of the road, left for dead, found covered with fleas and open wounds with maggots in them ... I was reduced to a pool of jelly. And that's how I came to adopt Punkin, who was rescued by a wonderful person at No More Homeless Pets in Kansas City. This high-volume, affordably priced spay and neuter clinic works with volunteers, veterinarians, and local shelters to promote pet adoption with the ultimate goal of making KC a no-kill city by 2012. Punkin was already spayed when I got her at 10 weeks. I've always spayed my cats, but NMHPKC is ensuring that people who otherwise wouldn't or couldn't spend the money can still have pets that aren't out overpopulating the planet. If you love puppies, NMHPKC rescues them too. If you're looking for a new best friend, wouldn't you rather find him or her at a place that's taking concrete steps toward reducing the number of strays and rescuing those who are already here? And if this plea hasn't convince you, look at my Punkin pictures. Then go to the NMHPKC web site and find a new friend of your own.

Very happy with the services here and it offers a discount compared to the area vets. Also, the money helps the organization.

She had found Katie and had taken care of her. I talked to this lady for a week or so about Katie and we decided to meet at the PetsMart that she was being kept at. My boyfriend and I fell in love with her, and were ready to get the adoption going. We sat down at the adoption table and started filling out the forms. Then the Adoption lady and her daughter asked us how old we were. My boyfriend was 20, and I 19. We did not see that as a problem, and neither did Katie's finder, however the adopters were disgusted. As soon as they found out our ages, they wanted to get us out of their adoption place as soon as possible. Asking us questions in a snotty way, and being completely rude. We would have been great owners for Katie. I have been an animal lover my whole life, and worked at a PetsMart. I am an animal activist, and Katie would have gotten nothing but love. The adopters knew that, but once they found out that neither of us were 21, it was all over. The last thing the adopter said to me was "We will call you if you get approved for the adoption, but we don't call people who don't." HOW RUDE? The lady who found Katie talked to us afterwords and expressed her feelings towards Second Chance Pet Adoptions, and said that if she had known that they would treat great pet owners that way, she would not have asked for their help to find Katie a loving home. I called the Second Chance Pet Adoptions and left a voice mail a few days later inquiring about my application, and saying that if we did not get approved we would appreciate a call anyway because we wanted Katie to find a home. However, i never receive a call or e-mail or anything. We wanted to give a cat a second change. This cat was 4 years old, and most people want kittens. But we loved Katie. Adopting cats is a great thing to do. I am glad that there or organizations that do it. But, when someone pretty much spits in my face for being young, despite my aptness to adopt and love an animal, that place should be shut down or put under new management. It was absolutely absurd. So a few weeks later we went to Wayside Waifs, where the staff was super friendly and did everything that they could to help us find the right cat. They adopted to us the same day. We did fill out an application and were asked various questions, but they saw what kind of people we were, and that we would take care of any animal.

We adopted Tally Roe in June with paperwork and them stating that she was spayed. This, however, seems not to be the case, as we have just recently found out. Our $400.00 adoption fee has now turned into almost $1000.00. We are on our fourth bag of diapers at $25.00 a box and a couple of washable ones that were $30 for two, and dealing with a dog in heat. Unleashed has offered to spay her, but we did not get to meet the vet when we went in, and at this point, I will make sure my baby is taken care of properly and take her to my vet and pay for it myself. It is unfortunate, Unleashed does not do a better job of ensuring these dogs are spayed before adopting them. They said the TX shelter they retrieved her from told them she was, but when I asked the lady at the desk at their vet clinic if this had happened before, she said it indeed had. I gave three stars because, as I stated, the adoption process was smooth, but I will not adopt from here again. I am not a breeder, and I've never dealt with a female dog in heat, but let me tell you, it isn't fun!

When I got my dog they made me sign a waiver that said if he was ever surrendered he had to go back to Unleashed. That's a big NO.
