Never ever bring your car to this shop! Charged me $130 ($160 after tax, figure that out...) to tell me I had a power steering leak and a brake noise. I told them I had a power steering leak and a brake noise! All I wanted was an estimate to replace the P/S lines and the pads on the bad corner. The leak and noise were obvious, the Diagnostic charge was B.S. and I was never told there would be a $160 charge when I dropped off the keys. Then had to go back 3 times to try and get my vehicle because their Creditcard reader was broken. Had to bring cash. Take your vehicle and money somewhere else! read more

This auto service was very quick at getting my car fixed. I dropped it off right before school, they sent me a text during school with a quote for the cost. I sent a confirmation that that worked and then they sent me a text that the car was fixed later in the day. ThenI walked down and retrieved it right after school. They were extremely quick, quoted me in the morning and got my confirmation for the cost before they began and had my car ready to go when they said they would. Overall very pleasurable experience. Overall, took the stress away from needing my car repaired. It was more expensive than I would have liked but for the quickness and stress reduction it was well worth the price. It is a typical mechanic shop, nothing out of the ordinary appearance wise. The staff was all nice and friendly when talking to them. Confirmed with some others that their price was a little high but well worth it for how quickly they got it done. read more

He put breaks on my van all the way around. After driving it about 30 miles my brakes are grinding again. I tried to reach out to him to make an appointment to have him look at it. He finally gave me an appointment after 5 days and when I arrived he was not there. I called again and he told me to take it someplace else. I took my vehicle to them over a year ago to get my alternator replaced. They offered the lowest price and the owner was willing to do other services at a discounted rate. After picking up my vehicle, I noticed a noise that was not there before. It sound like a grinding noise. It was present when I put my foot on the gas. I took it back but they said it could be my ac. Everything worked just fine prior to service, now it seemed like I was going to have one problem after another. I also noticed that after a while, my vehicle would randomly shut off even while driving. I decided not to return because I can't afford to take my vehicle in for one thing only to end up with another problem and another fee. read more

First things first, I recommend going down the street. This place diagnoses the wrong problems and takes your money! I had a seal fixed for 500$! was told it would still leak which was fine i understand, but what they didn't tell me is that there were 2 quarter size holes in my transmission that were literally 3 inches away from the repair they did. No to mention my trans mount bolt wasn't even screwed in all the way and my engine and trans were shaking all over the place. This place over looked catostrophic failure of a transmission and didn't even let me know! Until i did it myself and replaced the whole transmission, runs great now! Highly recommend you go somewhere else and save yourself the head ache that i unfortunately did. I cannot even begin to say how fabulous this shop is!! I called them because my truck started misfiring while I was towing my horse to Kentucky. Being far from home with a horse in the trailer I was in full panic mode. Randy was not only calm and helpful, but he helped me trouble shoot where to go so I wouldn't get stuck with my rig and wouldn't have to unhook the trailer. They had my truck fixed quickly and my horse and I back on the road. While they could have used my moment of desperation to gauge the price, it was actually very reasonable. To cap off this fabulous experience, they even helped me back up the trailer and watched traffic to make sure I could get on the street without issue. Being a woman and all, I'm often wary of taking my car to any auto repair shop, for fear of being ripped off as I absentmindedly bat my eyes and twirl my hair. This time was no different. Fortunately, I remembered taking my car to University Auto a little over a year ago for a water pump replacement. It was not a cheap job, and after calling upwards of 10 places in the area I found this one to be the most reasonably-priced. The great thing about UA is that it's a small business, so you're not wondering who you last talked to or having to book an appointment. Also, the owner is really friendly and took the time to explain the fact that I'd need my brake pad and rotor replaced, showed me what a rotor and brake pad WAS on my own car, and talked to my very skeptical dad on the phone about it for I don't know how long. He also fixed my loose bumper and did an oil change for me. The only two things I'm still unsure of are: whether I truly needed my rotor replaced, or just rotated, which would've cost far less; and why he said it would be $289 (was that with or without tax? damn this undiagnosed ADD) but it ended up being $344. These are things I could've confirmed, had I not just wanted my car back ASAP...nevertheless, I was satisfied with the friendly and fast service, and will probably come back again. read more

This locally owned repair shop is located at the end of my street, but I hadn't thought to give it a chance until my A/C went out over the weekend. I dropped my car off at 9 AM on Monday morning, received a quote by 10 AM, and had repairs finished by 3:30 PM. Even without an appointment, Tim quickly accommodated my work needs and had me up and running (literally) within a few hours. The parts and labor are guaranteed for 12 months, and I received an itemized receipt for my records. While my repairs were expensive, I felt as though the cost was reasonable for the extensive repairs. I will absolutely continue to visit University Auto Service for major repairs and routine oil changes. read more

I started bringing my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee here because they had good reviews on Yelp and because they were conveniently located for me. On the plus side, their service has always been prompt and friendly. However, at least in my experience, they seem incapable of repairing something correctly the first time. I had the brake pads and rotors replaced a year or so ago, and I had to make several return visits because a metal heat shield was rubbing against one of the new rotors, making a loud grinding sound. Then, soon after moving to California, it was discovered that one of the rotors they installed turned out to be defective, which was causing my car to shake violently and go into the dreaded "death wobble" when I applied the brakes... Always a fun experience on LA freeways, or when driving down a narrow, twisting mountain highway. Soon after the brake job, I brought my car in to have the power steering pump looked at. They replaced the pump, but they didn't bother checking the adjacent power steering fluid lines for leaks. After the new power steering pump was nearly ruined due to loss of fluid, they finally decided to check the lines for leaks and replace them. Problem was, the power steering fluid had been leaking all over the serpentine belt, causing it to squeal loudly. They replaced the belt at the same time they put the new power steering lines in, but the squealing issue persisted. A mechanic here in LA replaced the belt again, along with the tensioner and idler. It worked for a while, but now the new belt is squealing just like the previous two. I decided to do some investigating on my own, and upon peeling back the plastic sleeve installed by University Auto Services, discovered that the brand-new high-pressure lines that carry the power steering fluid are covered in power steering fluid. Granted, I'm no mechanic, but I'm pretty sure the power steering fluid is supposed to remain inside the lines. So, in addition to wasting hundreds of dollars on a new tensioner and idler that weren't needed, I now have to spend a few hundred more dollars fixing something that should've been fixed correctly the first time by University Auto Services. While friendly and courteous, their MO seems to be to do the least amount of work necessary to "fix" a problem, and send the customer on their way. Before hitting the road for California, I had some work done across the river at Rick Waldenmayer's in Southgate, and I found them to be far more competent and professional. read more

That's a sad story! My car is broken so I took it to this place. It takes more than 24 hours to give me the estimate price which is more than $850. And I've been told my car can not start or move anymore unless it got repair or tow. But if we decide not to repair it, we need to pay $190 for diagnostic labor which is definitely more expensive than others. But we had no choice since it's no reason to pay the expensive diagnostic no start fee plus the charge of tow and get nothing at the end. So I decided to pay the repair fee. They said the car needs to replace the UBEC control and they don't have it in store and need to order online. Once they received it they can get my car repaired. So two days later. They changed the UBEC control but my car still can not start and they told me they need one more part and I should buy it by myself and they will replace it for free. If not, they will charge me $600 more to get it done. So I ordered the part online of course. But it takes too long to get it. We don't have time to wait it since I will leave this country shortly. At the end, I decide to gift it to them since we don't have time to wait it get repaired and sell it. They said we can donate it to them. So I donated it to them for $0. I paid nothing for the repair but my car. I feel sad that my car is not my car anymore. I suggest if your car is broken, you'd better go to the bigger garage. At least they may have the parts available in store so you may get your car repaired sooner. The most important thing is you will get more accurate and reasonable diagnose for the problem of your car at the beginning. read more

No idea why the bad review on here! Super friendly, super fast. My car wouldn't start and I had to get a new starter. When I called on the phone, they offered to find me a tow company. When I brought my car in, even though I honestly don't know much about cars at all and I was a girl on my own, they fixed only the starter, didn't try to give me anything I didn't need, and the price was pretty much what I expected, nothing unusual. Since moving to the area in 2003 I have taken five different vehicles to them and I am very happy with their service. They are honest and resourceful and are great for people on a budget. I am not saying that they are the cheapest, you get what you pay for but when something is broken they will tell me if it is truly needed. For instance I took my 2000 Audi a six to them with a check engine light and a rough idle in the cold morning. It was caused by the auxiliary blower motor not working. This would be a $1200 fix and the motors sole purpose is to run for five minutes to help warm the engine up faster so that it passes emissions tests. It has no other purpose and considering it is a 18-year-old vehicle in a state that does not require emissions tests I have not replaced it. Every time I take the car in for an oil change they check all the codes to make sure nothing new has popped up. As long as I am in the area I will continue to use them. read more

I would love to support University Auto but after three issues I cannot, in good faith, recommend them. First an oil change cost me $120. I didn't realize my new car was synthetic only. So, yes, it is typically more but Midas cost me $45. Second, when I called about getting a new battery they told me some BS about how it was going to be more expensive for my car because of some special reset it required. Yeah, that was not the case. The battery I got, with a 5 year warranty, was $70 less than they quoted me. And finally, they overfilled my tires by 10 psi, thankfully I didn't have a blow out due to it. I would love to go to University Auto, I would love to support my neighborhood business but not when the pricing is so over inflated (like my tires). I don't know if they just think the college kids' parents are footing the bill or what but I have learned my lesson. read more

They started by overcharging me for the work that needed to be done pricing me out at the most expensive parts available. Then Demanding I pay entirely in cash, charging me a diagnostic fee which, if you get work done usually goes into cost of labor, here it did not. Changed my brakes without resurfacing rotors, then when I refused to pay entirely in cash charging me an extra 84 flat fee for using a credit card. They kept coming up with different versions of the receipts, so I don't honestly know what I was getting charged for. But from what I can see they charged me 27 dollars per filter to install two cabin filters. Something you could get done at jiffy lube for maybe 50 bucks including the filters. read more
