Knew vehicle was having transmission problems for years (dusty envrionment, rattling during acceleration, gear problems, etc.). It has a CV transmission (CVT) which is very expensive, difficult and finicky once maintenanced. Made an appointment with one UT's wonderful reps who gave me a reasonable estimate of both time and cost. Work was completely on time and the vehicle drives years younger. Buyer beware!!! Worst car repair experience of my life. I had always heard great things about universal transmission - there were several good reviews as well. My son needed a new transmission, so I dropped off the car at universal. Initially the estimate was $1,800. After LITERALLY two months - from June 4 until July 30 - the transmission was replaced at a cost of over $2,600. The process of being "nickel and dimed" was unbelievable. Lastly, their mechanic removed several wires under the dash - I have no idea why, as it is a standard transmission. He disabled the electric fan which caused the motor to overheat and seize. The car is now at a different shop for engine repairs. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE experience. read more

I know there are mixed reviews on this business. However my experience was nothing but pleasant. I went in for a transmission flush. They were able to accomplish the task easily and had great customer service. There are Covid precautions, so make sure you only bring the keys and remote to the vehicle. The will remove them from your key ring and hand back your house keys (all to keep you and themselves safe) . Otherwise their prices are great and their costumer service even better. Even though our tranny now seems to be repaired satisfactorily, our overall experience was only fair. We have a Ranger pick-up that would no longer go into reverse. After fully discussing the problem and probable correction needed, I agreed to leave the vehicle that day to have it rebuilt. After 6 days I was called and told the truck was fully repaired, road worthy, test driven and ready to drive. After paying the bill in full, we drove away. But, within less than a mile from the shop, the transmission was unacceptable...it shifted rougher, slipped upon acceleration, and it wouldn't accelerate from a dead stop as well as it did BEFORE we left it with UT. My son and I were very shocked and disappointed that the truck drove worse than before, and had to return it immediately. Consequently, we had to once again leave it again for more repairs. After an additional seven days, they called again saying it was ready. I test drove it, and it continues to drive out as expected. The actual rebuild cost of $2668. For your reference, a rebuilt transmission for the truck at the local auto parts store ranges from $1550 to $1750 not including labor. If I had the tools and ability, I would just swap with a upgraded rebuilt myself and save the extra $1000 in labor. read more

Terrible quality of work. I've taken my truck here to get the transmission rebuilt twice. And broke again shortly after. I then decided to get my jeeps transmission serviced here and conveniently broke afterwards and needed a rebuild. So I decided to let them rebuilt it. Well, it only lasted for 2k miles. At that point I figured something fishy was going on. I then decided to take my truck and jeep elsewhere to get the transmissions rebuilt and they're currently running just fine with about 10k miles after the rebuild. My new mechanic told me this place must have been purposefully breaking my cars to get money. Don't go here, your car will not be fixed correctly. read more

We took our 2003 Dodge Durango to have it diagnosed as to why our transmission wasn't down shifting or going into over drive. I have read up on multiple dodge forums that dodges were notorious in having the transmission solenoid pack going out. We took it to universal transmission to get a professional opinion and after having them drive it for 5 minutes and running the codes they decided that our transmission was totally screwed and it needed to be rebuilt (with no other option) their quote was $2600.00. Money my family of 6 doesn't have. Anyhow I looked up the codes online and sure enough, it was what I thought it was. The transmission solenoid pack. I went to advanced auto parts, ordered a new one with filters all for $250 and changed it out myself. Guess what ???? MY DURANGO IS RUNNING PERFECT!!! It's didn't need to be rebuilt. The transmission is perfectly fine ! They tried scamming us out of $2800.00 !!! Please get multiple options before taking your vehicle here. They are not honest, and WILL take advantage of you. read more

I took my 99 Subaru in with an oil leak. They diagnosed the problem very quickly ordered the parts they even fixed a problem that I didn't even know about with no charge. They made me feel like my problem was very important to them and will be taken care of. Customer service at universal transmission is outstanding. Bad work done here! Took my jeep for a total transmission rebuild! The cost was $3500 and the rebuild only lasted just over a year and a half! Took it back and they wanted to rebuild it again for another $1300! Need less to say I'm not going to be using them again, and I hope you think twice before giving them your business! I was on a trip from Las Vegas to Miami, Florida. My first stop was New Mexico. On my way to Texas, my transmission was slipping something awful. I barely made it back to New Mexico, where I was referred to Universal Transmission. Because it was not clearly evident what the problem was, they were going to have to run tests. I had to leave to make it in time for wedding in Miami, so I told them I would leave car for a few weeks for them to fix. Well, they ran tests, stored my vehicle for the two weeks, diagnosed problem and repaired vehicle for me while I made the wedding in a rent a car. I was relieved to find out that it was not my trasnsmission, but a sensor. I was happy not to have a $3k or $4k bill. I figured i'd have to pay for 5 or 6 hours of labor plus parts and would have to pay $600 to $700. I couldn't believe when they told be it was $300 and change. I never would have guessed it could be that little after having to computer test my car, test drive, install parts, and oh I even forgot that they cleaned the transmission as well. Linda and the crew were informative and pleasant the whole time. I would highly recommend them and even thought if I had a transmission problem in the future, I would somehow have them fix it instead of one of the shops here in Las Vegas, NV read more

I brought my Duramax with Allison transmission here, and I WOULD NOT recommend this place to anyone. I drove my truck to Universal Transmission at the speed limits (in fact it drove perfect all the way up to the speed limiter) with a $550-$1350 estimate, they billed me at $2764.07, and I limped my truck home unable to drive above 30 mph and the truck shaking horribly. According to them, somehow my driveshaft's slip yoke got damaged from me leaving their parking lot, because they took my truck on a test drive and it was fine (I ended up having to replace all half of my drive shaft, and get it re-balanced - Another $600 in repairs before my truck could be driven, after Universal Transmission give my truck the ok)! Just their estimate was off by 200% to 500%. The main reason I brought my truck in was to have a damaged/broken section of the housing, under the filter inspected, and a fix offered. Depending on the results I would determine if I wanted to reseal my transmission or replace it. Before I brought my truck I called for some pricing; on the high side $1350 including a HD torque converter, low side was $550 for just a reseal. They did find a wire harness and solenoid that also needed to be replaced, and changed my transfer case fluid but my bill quickly sky rocketed to $2764.07. My bill ended up being between 205% to 503% higher then their estimate Universal Transmission wanted to go over my truck with me, which I was very happy to do, so I ask again about the damaged/broken section. , Hector gets into an argument with me, in front of my kids saying, "I just rebuilt this transmission myself, and I put the filter on my self, and there is no broken/damaged section." I insisted there was, to which Hector (the owner/head mechanic) replied, "are you calling me a liar? I did the work myself. There is nothing wrong under the filter." I still insisted there was, and he told me I would have to pay for a new filter in order to take off the brand new filter he installed to show him the damaged piece because he had installed my external spin on filter so tight it would have to be destroyed to take it off. I agreed, he walked off incredibly angrily, and had one of his employees take of and destroy the brand new filter, which easily exposed the section that was damaged! Yes, it was damaged, even though he swore up and down there was nothing wrong, and that he did the work himself, and it was perfect! His employee could easily see the damaged section, called Hector over and showed it to him, to which Hector replied, "it's not important." and walked off upset, but with his foot in his mouth. I still had to buy a new filter even though he promised me there wasn't anything damaged there, but there was. Hector (I'm pretty sure he's the owner, or at least head mechanic) insulted me, my truck, and my family. Promised me he did perfect work, yet ignored, or overlooked my damaged transmission housing, but had no problem changing my original quote from just over $550 to finalizing my bill at $2,764.07 read more

I had the transmission rebuilt in my truck in the summer of 2014. Unfortunate circumstances. I remember the experience was like pulling teeth. It took them almost a month to rebuild the transmission. No explanation. They just fed me bullshit every step of the way. Very stressful for me since I grew up around cars building them. I was not able to repair my own truck due to no access to a shop with a lift. Anyway, the transmission cost me half of my savings, and it worked good for four years. But I had always suspected that something wasn't right with it. I take care of my truck. Religious oil changes and transmission services. I never abuse my truck. Yet the transmission, which I had built with extra clutches and heavy duty parts, let go again. Transmissions shouldn't blow up for no reason. Something wasn't done right when it was built. Had the transmission serviced the first time on my 2004 Crown Vic. I waited for it while the work was being. Took only one hour. The bays where they work on the cars were spotless. That tells me a lot about a business. They take pride in how their shop looks. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Universal Transmission is family owned and operated. Like dealing with business with local merchants and keep my money right here in Rio Rancho. I would recommend Universal Transmission to anyone needing work on their vehicles.
