Food was good, not great but that was likely my fault for ordering something I generally wouldn't. However my vegetarian daughter loved their impossible burger, and the Brussels were delicious. Upon entering you Order from the front bar outside and pay there as well. The woman at the front lokked less than pleased to be seating taking a order. She grabbed are drinks handed us a number. We chose are seats out side. The artificial turf was NASTY! Dog hair flying in the summer breeze! Garbage and straw paper trash all over. Bartender has his mask hanging off his ear. Based on the reviews I was skeptical but felt dating so decided to go for lunch. It wasn't crowded for a weekday lunch, so maybe that made a difference because the reviews were based on service and wait times. Love the covered patio and the fact there's games for kids and your dog can tag a long too. They even have water bowls for the fury friends outside. Love the rustic,bar feel also. Our waitress Rachel suggested the burgers and shrimp tacos so we ordered the Bacon cheddar burger and Patty melt. Drinks...the Cadillac margarita and Cranberry sangria. The sangria was so bitter and tasted mainly of lime juice...I preferred the Cadillac margarita. Burgers were legit!! Nothing like a big fat, juicy slab of angus beef and a nice cold drink on a sunny day!! Didn't have an issue with the service or wait time at all. I want to love Universal Joint. They're like the poor cousin to Local Republic down the road and I always go for the underdog. They are woefully inconsistent and I wish they'd get it together so I could KNOW I'd have a good time when we go. Sometimes? It's great. I'll order a burger and a beer and their quinoa/sprouts salad and I'll love my dinner. Other times? I've had a bad enough experience that I really wonder if I'll ever come back. This last time is one of those - the waitress was, for the most part, a no show; we had to get our own silverware and ask other waitresses for drink refills - the cocktails (margarita in this case) have almost no alcohol content - the quinoa/sprouts salad was absolutely disgusting: swimming in some type of ranch sauce (negating any health benefits) and looked like a pile of sludge - the cuban sandwich had almost no bread and fell apart when I tried to eat it - my wife's quesadilla came with no sour cream My lesson - order a beer and a burger and stick with that. so last night i went to universal joint with a few friends and i feel like every time i come here i have the same experience. Our server (samuel g) was so rude & impatient with us kinda felt like he was discriminating towards us. every time i tried to order something he was so quick to walk away i couldn't even finish placing my order because he'd just walk away. he rushed us to pay in the rudest way & made it seem like he was mad that we decided to come here and eat. will not be returning here. this place is located in downtown lawrenceville where it's diverse. if you hate your job so much to the point where you make customers feel uncomfortable then quit. the whole experience was uncomfortable. read more

Ehhh this is an alright spot. Got to hang out with some friends for a birthday dinner. The burger that I had was very tasty it was the Old Timer 1-2. My fiancé and I got the patty melt, Cuban and grilled avocados and everything was flavorless and bland. The best thing was the cucumber salad as a side. BEWARE OF TO-GO ORDER FEE!! I am appalled that I was charged 18% ($11.99) fee for a To-Go order for a group of 5 people. Because my employees were waiting patiently for their food in a limited lunch hour, I had no choice but to pay and go. I asked on the way out why would there be such a charge? I was told that it is to pay for the to-go containers, condiments, and plastic utensils. Are you serious?!? We love coming here with our dogs. The environment is great and the food is delicious! Johnny waited on us today and he was so much fun! Thanks for making our lunch so enjoyable. The salads and burgers are outstanding and everyone must try the fried Brussels sprouts! We have been here three times in a month and will continue to come back! I am currently sitting at the bar. I've been here since 4:11pm and it is now 4:29pm. The bartender came over to take my drink order and has yet to come over and ask if I want food or even see if I'm doing ok. I am getting my check, paying and going elsewhere! There are way too many restaurants in Downtown Lawrenceville that will be happy to provide services and I will be more than happy to generously tip them! Most of the staff was so fantastic and welcoming that they make you want to come back but I felt that the younger staff would huddle in groups and fail to notice you when you needed a refill. The food itself was very good. Be warned, they are not necessarily the healthiest but great place for a cheat day. The Universal joint is a good place to get some simple food and drinks and relax with some friends. They have indoor and outdoor seating. But there is limited parking on-site so you may have to park in a lot nearby. The service is always friendly and accommodating, today we had John as our server and he was very helpful with helping my girlfriend find an item on the menu that fit her dietary restrictions. I have come to this location multiple times and tried out a different menu item each time, this time it was the Philly cheesesteak, while my girlfriend had the chicken tacos. She liked the tacos while I found the cheesesteak to be a little bland, so I would recommend you getting a burger when trying this place out. read more

The joint is clean enough. The hallway to the bathroom looks like a catchall/storage area. The service was untraditional. The server was wearing sunglasses inside. Another server had shorts so short, she kept pulling on them to pull them down but it was useless. There are only a few booths inside, some pub style tables, and the bar with ample seating. There is exterior seating and a rotating fan to provide relief from the Georgia heat. The exterior is dog friendly. The music is oldies which is fine and it wasn't too loud. Seating at the time we dined was seat yourself. It did not take long for the server to find us and take our order. I ordered grilled cheese and tots, cheeseburgers and tots, and 10 lemon pepper wings with ranch. The grilled cheese was decent. The bread wasn't too hard to eat and the cheese was melted. The tots were cooked well on both plates and were tasty. The burgers were good too, not overdone and burned. They had a nice flavor for the kiddo. My wings however, left much to be desired. They were very dry and bits of them looked like they had been frost bitten and then cooked. Weird looking. The lemon pepper flavor seemed like an afterthought as only sections of the wings had flavoring and other parts were completely void of any flavor whatsoever. The ranch dressing smelled like ranch but had the consistency of blue cheese dressing. The server was kind and friendly with the kids, which I always appreciate. We won't return. I was really disappointed with the service. I had to clean our table off for our party, no one really helped or guided us for seating for our party of 13. I moved the tables, a server who wasn't even in our section took the dirty dishes away. Our tables were never wiped off. We never received silverware or napkins. We didn't get asked about to go boxes. It took forever for our server to even take our order. She gave us our bill before we even received our food. And then she failed to communicate with us that they ran out of fries and we received tater tots. I actually had to go get our silverware, napkins and to go boxes from their server station. As a college student and server myself, they could of done a lot better. The only reason I'm giving it a 2 star is because my burger was great. read more

Normally I wouldn't do this but tonight must have been the "let all the scrubs be servers" night. Omg it was the worst. Management needs to fire these new knuckleheads. Why do the some of the servers suck and ignore you even when you sit in the middle of the outdoor patio area...and...after asking for service..and..after getting our own drinks at the bar.? We literally watched the kid with the dreads sit down at a table with another employee and friends. Could not get his attention at all. -_- Normally our server, the cute short white young lady with the strawberry blondeish hair is our server. We didnt see her and we had a feeling it was gonna be a bad night....u Walked in..they had the sign that says seat yourself. We sat ourselves down and waited. 10 minutes go by, no help. Saw 3 servers walk right by us and got other tables. No hi..no how are you..no nothing. Pretty whack. So we get up and ask the hostess..hey can we get menus, and maybe some frkn service!?!? The guy with the dreads and Angel said someone will be with us shortly. 15 minutes go by and we see him and a tall white guy go to a table to our right..multiple times..taking shots, texting, having a good ol time. Wouldn't even make eye contact. So we ended up going to bar..got our own drinks...told one of the owners what was going on. She said sorry, gave us waters, then grabbed her purse and left We sit back down..took a sip of our waters and ended up just leaving. Like I said..normally, when our normal server is there, the service is great. But every other server in that place needs to be fired. My husband and I stopped her after coming home from Atlanta, and we had a very pleasant experience, and will certainly be back. We entered and there was a hostess stand, but the sign said to seat yourself, so we walked inside a little ways but saw that it was mostly bar space, and we considered sitting at one of the high tables, but decided that would be too noisy for us so we opted for one of the booths by the hostess stands which was out of the line of sight but much more quiet. Our server came and he was very amiable and made a joke, which I think that he thought we did not appreciate, but we did, we were just tried after dealing with a doctor appointment and Atlanta traffic. Our server took our drink order and and showed us what the weekly specials were, and left us to look at the me menu. When he returned, we ordered the soft pretzel, and I got the burger with American cheese and nothing else and my husband got the Cuban. Our server brought out our pretzel with honey mustard and queso on the side for dipping. The pretzel was fine, although it was bit overdone and some parts were basically burnt. The queso was good but nothing to write home about. Another gentleman brought our our dinners. Sadly my burger had lettuce, tomato, and onion and a pickle spear with it, but it was easy to move all of that to the small plate that was brought out with the plate for the pretzel. When our server came to check on us and saw the lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle (the vedge as he called it) he apologized profusely and kept asking me if I wanted him to take it away as he had made sure I had not wanted any of that when he took my order. I told him it was fine, and it was as it was not like they put mayonnaise or ketchup or mustard on it which would have actually ruined the burger for me. Both my husband and I got fries as a side and they were phenomenal! I am sure they were frozen fries, but these fries were perfectly seasoned, and they even had a little heat to them, and they were worth coming back just for them alone. My husband said that the bread on the Cuban was dry, and he ended up just eating the sandwich without the bread. Still he was less than impressed with the sandwich and said he would try something else on a return trip. Before our server brought our check he told us about a really interesting event that the downtown city of Lawrenceville would be hosting Saturday August 14th where the local businesses would be giving away free comics. It was essentially a local comic event and I loved that to see a local business promoting other local businesses in the area, and our server was very endearing, and I certainly think that our service was some of the best we have had. More roaches than I'd like to see on the bar that I'm eating at, along with staff airing of laundry in front of customers. I sent the following message to management and never heard back: I'd like to have the owner contact me please. Yesterday I visited with a colleague and near the end of our meal, we thought we noticed a roach and when we brougth it up to the shift supervisor/manager, she mentioned that it was a small bug. We ended up paying so that we were not late to work, but between the roach and the lack of self-awareness from the shift supervisor who came in at as she owned the place airing her laundry about how much she dislikes the rest of her staff while cursing like a sailor, something needs to be said. Great black bean patty with AMAZING gluten free bun! I ordered the quinoa and brussels sprout salad as a side which was $1.50 up charge. It was ok, a little too juicy for me. My husband ordered the patty melt and fries which he enjoyed as well. I had water and he got a sweet tea, but changed it to coke. (I don't think he was crazy about the flavor of the tea) the cups they use are ginormous!!! The inside has several little tables and a pretty good size bar but there is more seating outside and in a little side room. While we were there I did see a dog outside so I guess if you're walking around Downtown Lawrenceville and you want to find somewhere to sit outside and eat with your PUP this would be a good location. read more

I am BEYOND disappointed with UJ. I've spent years coming here and I was so excited to show this spot to my colleagues during a team building outing. We sat at our table for over 15 minutes and we were never acknowledged, but the table behind us on the covered patio was welcomed, greeted with menus and silverware, and visited with full drinks after taking their order in the time that we waited to be acknowledged. Our first visit here. Would like to say we liked it, but really didn't. Everything I tried (pimento cheese, California turkey burger, tots) was spicy. Yeah, shouldn't have been, but for me it was. Like someone went overboard with pepper, my lips were burning. I can't do spice, it makes me sick. So I quit eating two bites of the burger and 3 tater tots in. It was hot outside and was looking for someplace cool inside, this was not it. It was hot inside too and got hotter as more folks arrived. The server barely knew the menu, didn't know what might be spicy and what wasn't. I hate when restaurants don't tell you the basic ingredients of a dish, and the servers haven't tried the food to make recommendations to guests. The turkey burger had celery and something else as filler. Would have liked to know that there was more than just turkey in it, I can only account for the spice as too much pepper? I could see the pepper on the tots. My fiancé had a Ujoint burger and he enjoyed it. Couldn't eat it all it was so big. Thus the three stars, his was good. The pimento cheese was passable and the heat was on the backside so not too bad. I had a little. It's pretty much a dive and nothing wrong with that but the chairs were painful to sit in and the table sticky. I would imagine when it's cool the outside area fills up. We might give it another try in the Fall with friends but all in all probably won't be back. I'm not sure if this is under new management or not. I've been going to this spot for six years and was a very big fan until recently. First the prices went up which I accepted because of covid and the increased cost of business. With each visit though, the food has gotten worse and the food more overpriced. Tonight the buns were burned, the food was overall unacceptable and I was surprised when the bill was 50% higher than I expected. To make matters worse, there was a notice when we got the bill that they would charge an extra $3 fee for using a credit card. When you short change customers for a quick buck you lose them in the long run. read more
