The installation crew was extremely unprofessional, especially Brett! Installation of carpet, 4/22/21 and 4/23/21 (Sergio and Efron): - They did not wear Covid face masks (and one of the guys kept on sneezing!) - Too much noise - extremely loud! They were shouting to each other back and forth the entire duration of the job. One of the guys was singing to himself while working downstairs. - Messy! Their tools were all over the house on multiple floors while I was working from home! - They both wore the same shoes they used to walk outside on the new carpet (no booties). - They put their jackets on my couch, I don't feel it's appropriate to put dusty work jackets on a customer's couch. - One of the guys ate a banana and left the banana peel on my kitchen counter, there is a garbage can about 4 feet away from that counter that he could have used. - They were constantly taking phone calls on speakerphone, this was disruptive. - They scratched the pole in my basement after it had been newly painted, I asked him about it and he said there's no way around it. - Everything was unnecessarily slammed around and roughly handled, whether it was putting something on the floor or opening a door or climbing up and down the stairs. - It was difficult to understand when they were communicating with me and asking questions. - They were using distasteful words in another language. - The waste basket in one of the bedrooms upstairs was placed on top of my bed so that they could reach the electrical outlet, this was very upsetting as I am sure nobody wants a waste basket on their bed where they sleep! - After they left, I found a staple on the carpeted floor and a screw from my desk that they moved - luckily, nobody stepped on either of those with their bare feet! Installation of tile and vinyl, 5/6/21 and 5/7/21 (Brett): I thought the carpet install was a one-off situation and hoped for the best for my tile install. He was much more quiet than the last set of installers and I appreciated that. However, I was even more disappointed than ever! - Again, no face masks worn during Covid - I asked Brett if they could take off their shoes and he refused - He didn't bring the materials needed for the job with him (tile, vinyl, threshold/trim/baseboards) so he had to drive back to the shop to get materials - They weren't even aware that they needed to provide and install trim all around the previously installed carpet and tile so there is a clear breakdown of communication with the back office and installation crew - I asked for them to put tarp down on the carpet since they are walking on it with their "outdoor" shoes on (the ground is wet outside from having previously rained) and he put down about a 5-6 ft sized drop cloth that covered about 1/8 of the flooring they will be walking on. I ended up taking bedsheets and laying them over the carpet where I could to prevent them from getting dirty. - After speaking with Dawn, when the guys came back from picking up the materials, Brett kept explaining how wearing booties is dangerous and could cause slipping. I insisted that I was okay with no booties, as long as the carpet is covered up, but he kept going back to the booties topic. Needless to say that the area where he was installing tile is TINY and surrounded by 2.5 walls so there's really only one way you could walk on tile and that's backwards (away from it). - I heard Brett tell the other guy "This is so convoluted. I have to walk past you to get in and out and you're working on the entryway...". I offered for Brett to use the garage door entrance so that he wouldn't have to step over the other guy's area, but he turned down my offer. - The owner came to check how things were going, which was really nice but I was put in a difficult position because Brett was there and could hear anything I said about him so I felt uncomfortable giving feedback about him to the owner. - When the owner left, Brett said to me "See? You made my boss come out here!", that sounded a bit threatening to me. I said "I hope I didn't get you in trouble", to which he answered "Oh, I won't get in trouble, I'm their best installer". - Some of the tiles were broken and Brett did not inform me. - After they finished the job, I found a nail on the carpet in the basement - There was no clean up done. I vacuumed myself. I think this was retaliation for me complaining. - They used the bathroom downstairs without asking permission and left the toilet seat up. I was offered a $92 discount by the owner for all this trouble. Out of a total bill of $4292, that was a slap in the face! I would rather pay more for better customer service. read more

I'm a bit delayed in writing this review. We used Universal about a year ago to put a carpet runner on our newly-refinished hardwood stairs. I didn't want just anything average, and Universal had unique things to offer. More importantly, their installers did a beautiful job. While their showroom isn't as large as some other giants, they were able to satisfy my desire to have something unique yet neutral. Customer Service was great. I had the carpet my basement theater. Its a small room 12 x15. Salesman stopped by on his way home to accommodate my late arrival home and measured. Very easy to work with and i felt no pressure directed to expensive options. This was my first carpeting experience and i found it very easy and for my small room, adfordable. Two men came out to install..and did a really good job. I had to get extra yard to cover the entry doorway to the crawl. They didnt just lay carpet there but did a nice job fitting the cement step down to the lower floor that really only i will ever see. I thought that would have been missed by installers were not interested in doing a good job. Id use them again if i need more rooms done. read more

Great local carpet vendor / contractor. Got a few quotes including some other local competitors and a big box option. While it was helpful getting multiple quotes to decide on a type of carpeting ultimately wanted to work with a local company if possible. Larry followed up appropriately, was on time for appointments, and seemed the most honest and forthright. Install team followed through doing a great job and we love our new carpet. Universal even emailed a paid in full invoice without requesting which was appreciated. Would definitely recommend and will use them again in future for any carpeting needs. read more

I love my new floors. We needed flooring for a large space that included a kitchen, Powder Room, Dining Room, halls and Foyer. This large space has a lot of turns and not a lot of long runs. It has 3 doors to the outside and 2 very sloppy dog drinkers to deal with. We were recommended a wood vinyl floor. I wanted hard wood but I knew that with all the water potential it would not work out well. So this was a fantastic option. The floor has been in for almost 2 years and is fantastic! I called Universal to ask about installing carpet that I already had. The carpet is in great shape. The person on the phone told me that they wouldn't come out to give me an estimate for the work citing that it was not worth his time to do so. He said he doesn't make enough money on jobs like this. He gave me the name of his "best carpet installer" - Jake Amore - to see if he would do it. I called Jake several times and left messages. After about 3 messages, he called me back and we scheduled an appointment. He then cancelled the appointment. I called back several times but he refuses to call me back. Bottom line is that Universal will only speak to you when they think they can make a lot of money off of you and their "best installer" doesn't know about customer service and that probably carries over into his professional work. read more

I had a basement bedroom and walk in closet carpeted by Universal Carpet and was extremely impressed. We originally ordered carpet from Home Depot but their installers weren't able to complete the installation and the order fell through. I called Universal Carpet and worked with Mike who was able to pick up a sample of the carpet we ordered from the other store and had it ready and waiting for us with comparable options when we came to their showroom. We ended up choosing a nicer carpet (quality and looks) for almost the exact same price and had it installed quicker than what Home Depot was able to schedule. The installers were quick, clean and did a fantastic job. The transitions from room to room look beautiful and they even installed a transition piece that I had bought previously to match the wood flooring in an adjacent room. A couple of weeks after the carpet was installed we accidentally closed a pet up in the bedroom with the carpet and they scratched at the door and ripped up the carpet at the doorway. I called Universal Carpet again and Mike came out within a couple of days to check out the damage and see how it could be repaired. After checking it out, they were able to repair the carpet by only restretching the affected area and it only cost us the price of the installers fee which was a very reasonable $75. I will absolutely use Universal Carpet if I have any needs in the future and would recommend them to anyone looking for new carpet or other flooring options. read more

Our experience with this company was just wonderful. From sales to installation it was a great experience. We had originally bought carpet from Home Depot, but had trouble with their installation team. Their teamed refused to do the job on two separate dates. Granted we were replacing carpet on our entire 2nd floor -- 3 kids bedrooms, a hallway, and the stairs. It wasn't an easy job -- the old carpet was pet stained and there was a lot of furniture to move around. Universal's 2-man team did a fantastic job. They vacuumed the new carpet after it was installed. They even trucked the old carpeting away after we told them to just leave it for our garbage pickup since it was pet stained and smelly. read more

We are so glad we used Universal for our flooring. We had to replace 10+ yr old carpet and vinyl floors that weren't the highest grade to begin with (supplied by the builder). Having never bought carpet, I did some research on-line. Found a great article which outlined how to buy carpet. That article made me realize the best choice was to NOT go to a home improvement store with a flooring dept, or use one of those 'buy-one-room-get-6-free' places, but to find a local, reputable independant flooring business. That is exactly what we found at Universal Carpet. Larry took us through figuring out what product would best serve our needs. We were planning on getting laminate, but he had concerns that water could be an issue and showed us some great vinyl plank flooring that is safe to use in areas with water. Larry was really great to work with and did everything he could to get us a reasonable price. The install went great and their installers were very professional. Universal Carpet completely re-tiled my master bathroom and they did an excellent job. The tile selection was very nice and my new shower came out great. They also re-tiled around the jacuzzi tub and the whole floor. The price was way lower than I expected for such a huge job and everything came out great. If I could leave a 0 star rating I would. I signed a contract with Larry their salesman on 9-27-19 and in less than a few hours of the salesman leaving he called me back to tell me they messed up on the original signed contract and wanted more money. The original price I was given was higher than any other company I was given quotes from, but I felt comfortable as I told Larry while signing the contract I was motivated by their high ratings and reviews on google. I was however mislead by this company's reviews on google being so highly rated. The salesman Larry called me and said straight off the bat before a word was spoken on my end, "you're gonna hate me and I'll rip your check up, because you're gonna hate me, if you want me to rip your check up, and I don't blame you if you think I "cheated" you, but we have to charge you over $1000.00 more than what we already agreed to and signed too". Things did not seem right at this point. The carpet I ordered was Mohawks Distinct flair, color 512 Ophelia. The room sizes were- a living room 16x19ft and a small dining room 13x11ft. The carpet was for these two rooms only. They originally signed the contract and agreed to $2300 which included the padding, install, and removal of original carpet. But than Larry stated they wanted to change the bill to $3500 over the phone. I told Larry I would think this over and call him back before giving him an answer as to whether he could rip my check up or I would agree to this new charge. Before I had time to do this, Larry emailed me and texted me. Which he said in both he would gladly come down to $3000 because again he knows it looks like he "cheated" me. But this new price still changed my bill $700 more than we already agreed on and signed a contract for. It didn't sit right with me and only left me wondering what really is going on? I have all this documented not only by the original contact but Larry also wrote me an email with a new contract and asking in email, "if you want me to rip your check up, I will, otherwise sign this new contract with increased charges up to $3500 giving me a discount of $500 but still charging me $700 higher than what we already agreed upon. I was feeling very uneasy, so I decided to call the store to hopefully speak with a General Manger or possibly the owner. I called the store, and got the receptionist and asked who the general manager was, the receptionist became rude immediately when I asked this simple question, and said, "who are you and what do you want?" To which I replied, "I'm just looking to know who the GM is or if you're privately owned- who the owner is?" She started to get more rude and than stated, "I'll just transfer you". When she transferred me, the next caller answered, he stated his name was Gary but refused to state his position in the company when I politely asked if he was the GM or the owner. He became irate with me and said, "I don't need to tell you who I am OR who the owner was" Gary than asked me who i was and what I wanted?" I was shocked, It's a simple question but replied, "I was a consumer and wanted to discuss a matter with the GM or possible owner".. and in all honesty all I wanted to do was understand better from the top of who manages this company how they can sign a contact with me and then within hours demand over $1000 more? I never even got anywhere with Gary as he HUNG UP on me telling me he doesn't have to tell me who the owner or GM is. I did explain I was a consumer and he didn't care.. He literally hung up?! This has all put a very bad taste in my mouth, and I highly doubt the validity of the reviews left on google. I also called 4 other carpet companies who ALL bid the job well UNDER $2000.00. I will be doing business elsewhere. I highly DON'T recommend this business. I can't even guarantee they will rip my check up so I was forced to contact my bank and pay $30 to stop payment on the check. read more

Cary came to our home and provided a reasonable price and great carpet options, without using the high pressure tactics. They were very flexible when I needed to change my installation date. Never go to this place!! Fought with the workers in front of me several times and treats them like crap and uses bad language. They subcontract the work and charged me big time!! His subcontractor told me what he charged them, and they charged me almost triple the amount that he was supposed to pay the other company. Then he didn't even pay them, but he was paid! Decent price, but ran into a problem that would certainly tick off anyone. Before doing the job, they ask, "Is it okay if we unplug the tv"? We're like, "Yeah sure, no problem". Thinking that they're just going to unplug a few cables and then they'd know how to replug them and all is well. However, I go to turn on my TV, and couldn't get cable. I notice that the cables have been replugged wrongly and now am forced to call the dreaded Comcast hotline and correct my problem. It's obvious they just unplugged everything in a hurry and didn't remember where to replug; very very frustrating. So if they come out and do some work for you, be sure to tell them not to mess with your TV too much because if you're like me and don't know how to replug everything correctly, and also hate to call customer service hotlines, then may be in for a treat. We also called them up and they told us that everything was plugged in correctly and we just need to call Comcast up to reactivate the cable...which was false. read more
