I came to United VTR Service in hoping they would rescue my 8mm VCR from the 80's. I had it plugged in for quite a while and one day it went kaput. I suspected as lightening strike took away the life of my beloved VCR. I still got hundreds of 8mm tapes with old memories. I really need this sucker to stay alive. I searched on Google to see who can fix this poor baby. I came here to see a messy store. I don't know if this was the owner's living room or bedroom. It was completely chaotic. Prescription bottles on the counter and half eaten lunch with wrapper... WTF? Is this a professional establishment? Customers' records exposed to the plain sight. I took a picture and blurred out the details. There are plenty of Feng Shui paraphernalia on the counter. Aw. My. Gawd. What a giant mess. My VCR was of course unrepairable. It cost $80 to check out. I was quoted with a price that was higher than the cost of a working unit and there was no guarantee if it will last. I was okay to let go. For being an outdated technology, I just have to find a cemetery to bury my baby. Overall, I need to find another repair shop to fix other electronics. Just not at United VTR Service. read more

I have an old Sanrio Hello Kitty boombox. You can't buy this one anymore although you can find some on eBay for parts, some of them going up several hundred dollars. VTR replaced the components so that the CD player and the cassette player again. They were also successful at pulling out a dent in one of the metal speaker covers. I wouldn't say it was cheap, but I'm happy to have it working! read more

Called United VTR. Talked to guy named Tom. Told him I had Canon GL2 with tape that wouldn't eject. "I can fix - $120.00". Took it to him. Sat it on counter and he immediately said "$250.00 to remove tape - professional camera", knowing I needed the tape. Charged me $250.00 and his tech had tape out in 10 minutes. Left camera because he said he would finish repair. Called me 24 hrs later and said now he needed $750.00 for repair. Picked up camera which now had tape door stuck open. NEVER take anything there. I was told it had many electronic issues and would cost thousands to repair. I declined, and they asked, "Why can't you afford it?" When I went to pick it up, they then said they could repair it for 750 dollars. I agreed. After months of being told repairs would take "one more week," I brought it home, only to find there was an additional issue, and the cd clamp was scrapping the cds. After another two weeks I brought it home, the player worked for 10 minutes and then completely died. I then brought the cd player to a shop in Austin. I saw the other 1 star reviews but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I dropped my speaker off and paid the 100 minimum repair fee. I was called couple days later and quoted another 500 to essentially replace some sound/volume knobs. I didn't think this was reasonable and we could not agree on a price. He is very stubborn on his pricing since he already has your deposit. Took my speaker back and he kept my 100. I highly suggest you take your business elsewhere! read more

This time I had a ONYKO receiver that shut-off just seconds after turning it on. He got the part in one week, and did all the work, for much less than having to replace it with a new receiver. COMICALLY DISHONEST. I brought in an Adcom tuner and amplifier to this guy and he charged me $260 to diagnose both units. About a week later he said to repair both would cost an additional $500. I said "uh... no thanks, I'll fix them myself." He said, "very difficult repair, that's why cost so much... I don't think you can fix" and laughed at me. I said, "there is nothing more difficult about repairing these units than soldering in some new components." I told him I'd swing by at around 2pm to pick them up. I showed up around 2:30 and the door was locked. I then decided to show up unannounced the following day. I picked them up and noticed a sign on the wall that indicated he had grossly overcharged me for the diagnoses. Just yesterday I opened up the Adcom amp and found a loose negative signal input wire that was shorting the right channel and causing a fuse on the PCB to blow. I resoldered the wire and tested with the fuse from the left channel. Amp fixed for the cost of a fuse and a dab of solder. Attached is a photo of the repair I made. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. UPDATE: the tuner simply required the selector switches to be cleaned with Deoxit D5 ($14.95 from Jeff). read more

I brought in a vintage Pioneer CT-F2121 Cassette Deck. This particular model is notorious for its transports' complexity. Changing the belts is definitely a professional job. Aside from that, the deck had many other legitimate problems that Tom and his tech were able to correct and repair (Head alignment, preamp issues, etc). They even procured parts that are nearly impossible to find to complete the job. The end result is a fantastic sounding 45+ year old cassette deck that is within factory specs again. United VTR took extra time to make sure it was operating to my satisfaction--going so far as to let me test it as long as I liked on their own repair bench. I highly recommend them. And Tom even offered a discount on the final bill due the length of time they had it in for service. -Sam M. I have been putting off converting a large number of family video tapes to MP4 files that I could share with my family on Dropbox and/or YouTube. It wasn't long before my Sony Betamax failed. After calling around Houston to find someone who could fix my 1980's model Betamax, Tom with United VTR assured me that his was the shop in Houston that could.
