However- if you are in the vicinity of Woodford, Virginia- prepare to step back into the past! The person who greets,(YES, GREETS) you at the counter is pleasant and helpful. Your request is taken seriously and handled in a timely and friendly fashion. The first time I availed myself of the services here, I truly thought I was in a time warp. I have since , returned and each trip has been a wonderful reminder that there are indeed folks who try to do their jobs in a happy and effective manner!

It's history, the colorful post offices all over the country, and meeting the postmasters all intrigue me! Ruther Glen is an unincorporated community that's serves about 16,000 folks! This post office has odd hours: M-F 9-4:30 closes from 1:30-3 for lunch - haven't seen a post office that closes that long for lunch but good for them! Sat. 10-12.

I was surprised that this post office is larger than most with a community of this small size. There's a decent sized parking lot, the interior could definitely use a facelift! It definitely has a musty, old odor! They offer passport service here, again, unusual for a quaint town like this. I hope you're not in a hurry to get your passport either, not all staff is trained for this service. If you make an appointment, you'll have better luck! The hours are 8:30-1, 2-5 M-F, and 9:30-12:00 on Saturday. Expect mediocre service, long waits and blasé personalities. The folks here aren't crazy about their jobs. Nothing to "write home about."

We were running errands in Mineral today, and dropped into the post office to pick up some Christmas-themed stamps. The USPS employee was friendly, parking was easy and sufficient, BUT they had already sold all of their Christmas-themed stamps (more than two weeks before Christmas!) So, our Christmas cards will be going out with dahlia-themed stamps!

The small town of Mineral was founded in 1890, and as you might have guessed, was named for the…read moremining industry which supported the community. Gold, zinc and lead were all mined in the area. This post office isn't much to look at... the long brick building houses dozens and dozens of post office boxes for mail delivery in this rural town. With a population of under 600 folks, you won't find this mail center very busy. The mail carriers use regular vehicles to deliver mail, rather than official USPS mail trucks. The interior is shabby, peeling walls, dingy counters and dirty floors. Shipping and mailing supplies were low, and the racks were disorganized with several boxes just strewn on the floor. There was a greeting card display which I doubt gets much action. The clerks are friendly and efficient, and seem to know most of the neighbors around town. You won't be in a gold rush here! There are a few drop off mail boxes on the side of the building. The hours are 8:30-1:00, 2:00-4:30 M-F, and Saturday 9-11. No passport services, but the usual small town services are provided. If the workers here get the "lead" out, spruce up this government building and take some pride in this place, I "zinc" they could earn some extra gold stars! But perhaps, bureaucracy is under"mining" its progress!

The post off is at the intersection of Route 1 & Mudd Tavern Road in a small brick rectangular building with a white portico above the door. It's plain, but these tiny post offices always catch my eye. I'd give it a 3 star review if it was spruced up, but inside is pretty aged; definitely needs the floors and baseboards redone and the old wood paneling has got to go! With a little TLC this post office could be a gem! Hours M-F 8:30-4:30, closes for lunch from 1-2; Sat. 9:00-11:30.

(Rt. 33) Is scenic, dotted with farmland and gorgeous rolling hills. The post office is on the main "downtown" road that runs through the small business district. The post office is open M-F from 8-11, 12-4:30, (closes for lunch) and Sat. from 8-11. Lobby hours are 24/7. This branch doesn't offer passport service, you can, however, purchase money orders here. There's plenty of parking and a drive up mailbox. Last mail pick up is 4:30 weekdays, 11 am on Saturday. Just a few other businesses are nearby, including the Food Lion, Montpelier's only grocery store. Next to the post office is this cool antique pick up truck that I couldn't resist! But you won't find President James Madison's Montpelier home here in this sleepy village, it's north, about an hour away. (There's another post office nearby that historic landmark with a similar name: Montpelier Station Post Office, different zip code.)
