I have been training at Unit2Fitness since 2016 with its striking program (Muay Thai, kickboxing). I have learned a lot since then and greatly improved my martial art technique, and physique. It has been a great experience and healthy routine for me to come to Unit2 several times a week. Jeff and Ryne are great people, passionate and professional. Jeff has been paying great attention to the experience at the gym and constantly striving to let people make the most of the gym. Especially during the COVID, he has implemented several social-distancing and cleaning routines that help keeping the gym safe. Ryne has awesome personalities and his kickboxing classes are super enjoyable and rewarding. It is going to be even better with the gym relocating to Decatur, which has natural sunlight and bigger space. I wound recommend it to my friends and in fact I have already done so with two of my friends. read more

I tried their crossfit out through Classpass. First off, you need to know that it appears to be a boarded up building that has been shut down... go around to the back... it is super sketch, but if you go to the back there is a door. I show up to a gym about 10-15 minutes early when it is the first time I am going to it. I came here drove around until I looked on yelp and finally realized I needed to go to the back, parked, walked to the door and it was locked. I called a couple times and got the answering machine. Finally someone else walked up and stood there. About 5 minutes before the class began, the instructor showed up. The gym is nothing fancy. Equipment is not super new, but it works... I have done a lot of crossfit and am usually happy with the workout. This one only had a really 3 exercises, all of which were shoulders. I felt that there was a good amount of down time. When I go to a gym, I don't want to waste any time while I am there, because I would much rather waste time on my couch rather than just waiting around between workouts at a gym... Their locker rooms/showers are very basic. The showers are hot and powerful, which is great, but don't expect any other amenities... I would like to try their kickbox classes as I love to do kickbox... not sure if I would try crossfit there as I like a lot more other places for crossfit. read more

Unit 2 Fitness - crossfit room - Trainers Near Me - Decatur, Georgia

I recently went in to try out the cardio kickboxing classes. I'm way out of shape, but used to love doing martial arts, and was looking forward to getting back in shape with the cardio kickboxing and then moving on to some of the other classes they offer. I went in for a 7:30 class, showed up, got my hands wrapped and a pair of gloves from the guy at the front desk, no problem. Then I went over to the mat for class, not sure who the instructor was until someone started yelling out warm ups. Ok, fine, no big issue so far. The instructor spent about a third of the time I was in the class off on the side chatting with someone, another third of the time playing on his phone, and the final third helping out one particular student. Maybe she was a long time student training for an event, maybe she was a good friend he hadn't seen in a while, or maybe he was just hitting on the hot girl. I kept trying to give this guy the benefit of the doubt, but it got harder as time went on. As time passed, the instructor didn't speak to me or assist me once. Not one "Hey, I'm ___, what's your name?" or "When you do that combo, you want to keep your back foot to the side to give you better leverage" or even "Hey, stop sweating all over the mat you lazy S.O.B.". I would have appreciated really anything, particularly since I was struggling to figure out footwork and balance issues on the stuff he was calling out for everyone to do. Finally, close to the end of class, he called out something that, I swear, sounded like "CATFISH LUMPS". I still don't know what he was actually saying. The other students went over to the boxing ring, stood along the sides, put their hands on the ropes, and...kinda wiggled? So, I approached him and spoke to him for the first time, and said "Hi, what's this?". He responded with what still sounded like "CATFISH LUMPS". I asked, as one might, "What are those?" He said, clearly somewhat exasperated with me, "Just look at what everyone else is doing". I looked at everyone wiggling, considered his expert advice, and decided that I was done, and walked out. I'd been frustrated and annoyed with the lack of attention and actual teaching/coaching the entire class. If the best I can get after 40 minutes or so of class is "Just look at what everyone else is doing", then I'm pretty sure I can get better instruction on Netflix, which is only 8 bucks a month. To their credit, the guy at the front desk was very kind and tried to be apologetic. He also suggested maybe I could try another class or timeslot with a different instructor, but I'm pretty out of patience after this experience, and also considered the 7:30 class time to be a huge selling point. Also, spending some time on their website afterwards, the instructor I had this experience with teaches some of the stuff I was excited about learning long term, which is pretty damning. There are a lot of maybes here. Like, the positive maybes - maybe this was a one off experience, maybe that instructor had a bad night, maybe other people there are better? Then there are the bad maybes - maybe this is how that class always is, or how that instructor always is? Maybe despite their website saying "All skill and fitness levels are welcome!", my lack of either made me a low priority? I really can't know without spending a lot more time there, which I'm not willing to do. Bottom line - I had a really terrible first experience and won't go back. This place WILL ROB YOU BLIND!!!! DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BANK OR DEBIT CARD INFO!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT!!!! DO NOT Sign up for the membership!!!! I ended up almost $400 in the hole one month bc they led me to believe my membership was cancelled (so I stopped going) then 6 months later they debited $400 out of my account for monthly dues PLUS 'late fees' (the entire year shouldn't have even been close to $400!!!!) The staff? Well, don't count on anyone to help you if you have an issue. The owner will not respond to ANY attempt at contact, you will be told you have to come in to speak with him in person, but conveniently is never there when you do come in. If you email someone - don't expect a response either. The trainers are great, if by great you enjoy being hit on during your class, being ignored during class because the teacher is too busy updating his Facebook status on his phone, or they tell you to do something, wander off, then 5 minutes later return to give you further direction. This place is a major scam, they will take you for everything they can and you won't even come close to getting your money's worth. Save yourself and go somewhere else, like maybe somewhere that isn't in a shady basement with shady management!!! read more

You can just smell the testosterone as soon as you walk in. This gym is on some serious Cock Rock shit. Which is great if you're training for MMA, have a penis, or enjoy paying quite a bit of money for the privilege of having someone kick the shit out of you. If you're training with Roberto Traven or you're an MMA fighter (male or female) I'm sure you'd rate this gym 5 stars. I regularly see some of my old teachers on local fight bills. If you're not particularly coordinated, or knowing your right from left isn't reflexive, I'd skip the kickboxing class. The teachers spent so much time stopping class to show me how to squat, jab, pivot, blah fucking blah that I was sure I wasn't burning the 500-700 calories per hour they claim per class. I could never figure out how to kick the fucking bag without killing my feet and shins, could never get the routines down, couldn't even figure out how to wrap my hands without looking like a mummy. Evidently I'm not cut out for kickboxing. Also, dont be fucking cocky. I had this idea that since I could breeze through most bootcamp classes and I'm scrappy, Muay Thai was the thing for me. They tried to sway me out of the regular Muay Thai class, but I wasn't having it. So I went, with 4 sweaty, grody dudes and tried to act like I was 'fine, fine, no I'm fine'. After my ears started ringing and I got dizzy from getting kicked so hard, I had to admit: I'm not a fighter. I'm a sucker-punching bitch, but not a fighter. Their cancellation policy sucks, too. I've been training here since I returned home from deployment and received the same warm welcome from day 1 as I did on month 4. The instructors here are knowledgeable and approachable. They create an environment that welcomes a diverse group of personalities that resembles the community around the gym. Competition is encouraged as well as those traveling their personal journeys in life. I've recommended family and friends to join and I plan to continue to train here for years to come. read more

I have a 1 month trial to this gym via Living Social that I will not be continuing and I'd like to explain why. On Tuesday night, I decided to try a kickboxing class. I believe the instructor that night was Will Ivy (based on photos on the website). I saw Will and someone else making fun of the new people in the class. As a trainer, Will's job is to motivate and encourage people who are TRYING to better themselves. Not make fun of them! I cannot even explain the degree to which I am disgusted by this behavior, but it is also just bad business sense. Who would want to work out there after witnessing that? Additionally, I think a trainer's job is to TRAIN people. Throwing out commands without explaining HOW to do something is not training people. It's lazy. He didn't even wait until the class was finished to leave! The bottom line is I am extremely disappointed that I gave these people even 1 cent of my hard earned money. If I had known this is the type of culture they encourage and/or allow, I would never have wasted my time trying this gym. UPDATE: in response to the owner's post, I would just like to say that 1) I am not self conscious when I work out. I am pretty fucking awesome at cardio kickboxing and did it for a year and a half at another gym (X3 Sports which I highly recommend) with absolutely no problem. I don't believe the trainer was making fun of ME. I think he was making fun of PEOPLE. 2) he ended the class abruptly and didn't even walk us through a cool down or stretch period. I wasn't commenting on the length of the class, I was commenting that he didn't stay to finish what he told us to do at the end. 3) Now that I'm doing cross fit at another gym - something I also tried here - I can say I'm equally unimpressed by their xfit instruction. Not since the episode of Friends' where Ross, Chandler, and Rachel try to take Ross's couch up the stairs has the word "pivot" been used so much. Apparently, I was sick when the rest of the kids in grade school were learning how to spin oneself around and thus properly learning to "pivot." Based on the other reviews I decided to try Unit 2 out. Last night was my very first time in an "official" kickboxing class. I walked in a bit cocky seeing as how Billy Blanks and I are close friends. Who knew that a tape and an actual class would be so vastly different? Before I really get into the actual class, here's a rundown of the gym. It's a bit of a misnomer to call this place a "gym." They should just call it"classes", b/c as the other reviewers have stated the cardio equipment(s) are nonexistent. Perhaps the other reviewers were there when they had 2 or 3 cardio equipments but when I was there last night, I only saw one. One lonely treadmill. Yes, you read that correctly, 1 treadmill! But the good news is that it seems to be free for most of the time and they have a huge weight room (perhaps to make up for the lack in treadmills). If you're looking for a place to look cute, work up a cute sweat in your Juicy Couture sweats (that's if people are still wearing those), then stick with the "big box" gyms. However, if you're serious about getting into shape or martial arts, this is the place to go. The membership rates are bit ridiculous, hence the three stars and not four or five. There are two sets of memberships depending on the full use of the gym which allows you to access to all the classes, such as the Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Tahi, and Capoeira, plus the weight room and treadmill, or a limited use which means that you only have access to the kickboxing class along with the weight room. Either way, the prices are double if not triple the cost of a Bally's or L.A. Fitness, but as I have stated this is a serious place. Not that a novice should fear taking a class or two. If I can, then anyone should. Now back to the actual kickboxing class. I'll give you an update as soon as my ankles, tops of my feet and lower legs heal. Like I said, I missed the spinning class in grade school so I've brusied my ankles and the tops of my feet rather than my shins. I'm going to test out the other classes to see if it justifies the rates. Perhaps after my bruises heal and my body stops aching, I'll give them another star. read more

Unit 2 has the best jiu jitsu in Atlanta. THIS is the place to be if you're serious about training BJJ. U2 also offers a variety of other classes like Kickboxing, Boxing, MMA, Fencing, Crossfit, and Personal Training. My wife particularly loves the women's ONLY classes. I will give it to you straight. Unit 2 is not cheap nor is it pretty. But you know what? When fitness is your priority those things should not matter. And Unit 2 is pretty awesome for that. You are not paying to walk on the treadmill for 3 hours. Nor are you paying for tons of mirrors to take selfies. Nor are you paying for folks to flex around the machines to talk about how hard they train. You are paying to work out with top notch trainers who train you to be as fit as they are. You are paying to work out with trainers who have a mixed martial arts mentality. That is NOT a LA fitness mentality. Its a way of life and they are serious. They help you, but they don't pat you on the shoulder and accept your excuses. And the gym is not pretty. Its not fancy machines or lockers rooms with saunas. Its a gym with a boxing ring, with heavy weights, barbells, kettlebells and a kickboxing ring with heavy bags. The back has mats for the MMA stuff which I dont venture into because I am not closely qualified for that stuff. There is kickboxing and crossfit for us normal folks. They offer: Kickboxing Crossfit Jiu-Jitsu Muay Thai Yea the serious stuff. And other serious stuff. I recommend Unit 2 for some serious training. They focus on things like form, nutrition and getting healthy as a way of life. I remember once a trainer said to me regardless of what you do in the gym, if you cannot move your own body weight in a life saving situation, you are in trouble. I been hooked ever since. Oh and they have kids classes too. No, not a kids rooms, kids classes. Yesterday they were punching it out in the ring while I was kicking a bag. I can appreciate kids getting some real activity in their lives. read more

In response to some reviews regarding rates, I've been around town to several other gyms similar to Unit 2. The rates are very fair considering what you get in return. Unit 2 isn't a "big box" gym as one reviewer put it. Unit 2 Fitness is martial arts geared for everyone. At a "big box" gym, they might offer a "kickboxing" class. Have you ever been to one? Some are taught by an in shape instructor who's never had a punch thrown back at them. Some are taught laughably by whomever they could grab for that time slot. At Unit 2, all of the instructors have had punches thrown at them and they've returned fire. Something about credibility when you're taking a "kickboxing" class. As far as the cardio equipment, its a martial arts gym, the cardio you get is unparalleled by traditional equipment. If you work hard during the class, you'll burn double or triple the amount of calories versus traditional means. The instructors and staff and extremely friendly. They have professional fighters, amateurs and non-combatants in any given class. Its a great mix of people and a great place to train. read more

I've just finished my second month of kickboxing classes at Unit 2. I started in late October by signing up for a year membership of two classes a week (the cheapest option, at $50/mo). The holidays were just around the corner and I wanted to lock myself into a fitness routine that would be really resistant to any kind of wriggle room or rationalization. I chose Unit 2 because of their good reputation, close proximity to my home and work, and they were well-recommended by my previous gym. I also just don't do traditional gyms because I have no motivation to make myself work out. I need someone to push me- and MMA is great at that. (Fighters have to be in really amazing shape, so they know how to WORK.) So far it's been good. I'd been going to a gym that was pretty far away, and it had instilled some pretty bad habits of not working out consistently. The holidays interrupted being able to go twice a week, but other than that, I've committed. Kickboxing is a popular class, with a lot of available class times. Multiple classes during the day, with plenty of evening classes for the after-work crowd. Unit 2 has a pretty steady rotation of instructors for kickboxing classes. I'm sure they teach other courses, so the class is more like an obligation for a lot of the trainers there. Still, it means you get instructors with different backgrounds and training preferences. The instructors try new things and different styles outside of the standard drills, cardio and ab training. This is GREAT if you don't want to get to adapted to your workout routine (but don't want to go all CrossFit). I love that in just 2 months I've gotten elements of weight and strength training, plyometrics, circuit training, and more in my workout. One of the trainers even makes us jump rope- traditional cardio training for boxers. Results? Well, there was the holiday diet and about a total of two weeks that I missed, but yes, for the most part I have seen some results- besides the result of being ABLE to get through the class. (The first week I was near vomiting the whole time, and even into the third week I wasn't able to keep up with the class- so I consider just getting up to speed and in shape to do the workout a result.) BUT, I have noticed that my booty has gotten smaller, yet my weight has gone up, anywhere from 2-4 lbs (my normal range). So I've both lost fat and gained muscle. I think that in just two months this is pretty good- considering all I have to do is show up and have them yell at me! Seeing any kind of results is a good push to continue working out, and I'm excited to see where I'll be when summer rolls around! My long term goals are to minimize my thunder thighs, and bulk up my butt. If you have similar goals (weight loss, sculpting), I'd recommend supplementing with more than two classes a week, or with some other kind of strength training workout to build muscle (like I keep telling myself I'm going to do). I highly recommend committing to a monthly membership and getting through the first month or two- I think a lot of people give up after a week or two, or just aren't consistent. It's common knowledge among the staff that the gym fills up in January with resolutions-fulfillers and returns to normal by April. If you're looking to meet a fitness goal as a resolution- prove them wrong! Don't give yourself the option of quitting or lapsing and lock yourself into a long-term membership like I did. You'll thank me later ;) There are some cons to Unit 2: - Dirty. There are dust bunnies wherever people aren't walking, and the mats are not at all clean- despite the strict no shoes policy. The bottoms of my feet are always BLACK at the end of class. I know it's no corporate, franchise gym with a professional janitorial staff- but given the fact that it's lots of people running bare foot and sweating and rolling around on the floor, they could stand to pay more attention to this. *If this bothers you, but you still want the MMA gym experience, I really recommend Team Octopus http://www.yelp.com/biz/team-octopus-chamblee-2 . It literally SPARKLES in comparison. - Parking. The lot is horrible. It's totally torn up on one side and people cram it in there. Your other option is on the street- which in Midtown... I made the mistake of going to a few classes around peak time, 6:30, and have had to park a few blocks down and walk. Definitely try to go earlier or later if you don't want to spend 10 minutes trying to find a spot, or if you can't parallel park... - They don't go the full hour! On the schedule the classes are listed as an hour, but there's some internal memo that I missed that says the classes actually only last 50 minutes. I'm not paying someone to let me slack!! I joined the classes because I can't self motivate. I'm sure I could've gotten an extra 50-100 calories burned in those extra 10 minutes. read more

This is a no-nonsense martial arts gym, and it's culture reflects that. Up front pricing, and at affordable levels compared to similar martial arts gyms in the area. They offer: - Kickboxing (not the pussy LA Fitness shit, you have bags and gloves and you will want to die) - CrossFit - MuayThai - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - Capoeira They also have great equipment and you have full access to their gym whenever you want. I experimented with a couple other gyms, and while X3 has better equipment and a cleaner set up, you also have to make a year long commitment at $99 a month to go there. I don't even have a year long commitment on my lease or cell phone plan, so this gym was perfect for me. EDIT: I had to knock this gym down 1 star. When I went in I signed up for a 3 month contract but came to realize recently that what I had actually signed was a 6 month contract. While I do feel a bit cheated, this was my fault for not reading the contract. As such, 1 star deducted. Everything else about this gym has been great. And having dealt with LA Fitness and other shady mongoloid gyms, such gimmicks are expected. This might have been an error and might not have been. Owell. read more

While the workouts and the instructor that taught the 2 classes I took were very nice, my issues was with the legality and wording of their cancelation policy. I attempted over a 5 day period to resolve this issue with no response from emails or messages left to the owner. I filed a BBB complaint and this complaint still remains unresolved due to the fact that no where in writing does it state the canceled contacts can be debited on any date other than the agreed upon date in the billing section of my contract. I found the owner Nick deKay to be very rude, evassive to the actual issue and full of execuses, not any actual answers or apology; which is all that I wanted. All though the trainers may be top rate, due to the billing contract issue and Nick deKay the owner, I would not recommend this facility. Very unprofessional. read more

From the very start when my hands were getting wrapped, I thought to myself, "Oh yea, I feel dangerous". The kick boxing personal trainer took that foolish notion out of my noggin by having me (and the rest of the class), kick, punch, perform combos in between burpees, running around the bags and jump squats. There is a bit of instruction, although after showing the moves to us twice, the class got it, though like others have said, when you commit to kicking those bag, your shin ain't happy. Speaking of instruction, the trainer I had is dedicated to you getting the best work out you can, and would often tell us when running, pass people if you have to, and definitely challenged us with "that's not as high as you can kick is it??" So i'm not going to be a professional fighter...but after completing that 50 minute class, I still feel dangerous and i'd highly recommend a course. read more

I am really happy I was able to find this gym. When I moved from Pitt, I was really sad to have to leave my box that had become such a home for me. So in anticipation, I needed to do a bunch of research in Atlanta to continue building my skill and driving for new PRs. Unit 2 stood out almost immediately. First off, it's not a fancy gym, so if that is something you look for with new amenities and towel service, this is not the place for you. This is a work gym, you come prepared to sweat and toil and transform yourself into a better athlete. But they do have modest locker and shower facilities for when you are a sweat monster. Second, you get a lot at this gym. Crossfit, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, Kickboxing, Personal Training options. A great variety and you can mix the Kickboxing classes in even if that is not your primary focus. I come for Xfit but I did one Kickboxing session. Sorry about this, but MOVE OVER CROSSFIT. LOL. I DIED. Well, almost; and the next day I definitely hurt so good. I see similar from the other class offerings of the gym, every once in a while I peak into what the Jiu Jitsu people are doing, all knotted up in the far room. Third, I really like the trainers. They are power-houses that drive an inclusive hard-toiling community, encouraging you with your workouts and continually push you; They are molding a mentally healthy gym community, which I am very happy about, because I hate the stereotypes that Xfit has cultivated: The over-aggressive, over-competitive, pretentious airs that neglect form and focus on weight. The ride of die mentality where you are looked at with a "how-dare-you-don't-WOD attitude. I hate that. I do this because I enjoy it for me alone and that's that. At Unit 2 I feel accepted for that mentality; I get an all-round workout in that does not overkill you with overly heavy weights, balancing the WODs for a comprehensive muscle build. However, I do see a lot of focus on Muscle ups... lol. Maybe because I can't do them yet. LOL. Last, it's a good price point. Now, I came from a low cost city so moving to a normal city and losing my student discount is going hurt in all ways. However, when you come three times a week like I do, $10 a session is a good price for a prescribed 1 hour workout that shows results in the mirror. Yes, of course you can make the argument to go to the local LA Fitness down the street, pay half if not a third of the price and get the same availability to classes, but I like getting a preset routine handed to me, where I don't have to sculpt a workout together with a limited knowledge base, and quick frankly, I like to suffer in groups. (If you get unlimited workout, it's an even better deal and as I do the advanced classes, it's a true 1 hour intense workout because you warm up on your own time beforehand.) Added plus, this may be unique for me, but I get to bring out the gymnast in me again. Warm ups contain handstand walks and every once in a while cartwheels. I'm still stretching but maybe at some point i'll throw a walkover or a front flip in there somewhere. read more

GOD, I felt like such a badass when I left this place. Something about punching a 100lb 8ft bag with boxing gloves just brings out the bloodlust in a gal. Even though this place was the epitome of off-in-the-cut, and even though the gloves smelled like ass warmed up, then spread over sweaty feet, I'd do their kickboxing class again in a heartbeat. I've been a member at Unit 2 for almost 2 years, and it's been a great experience. I joined the gym for their striking classes (Muay Thai and boxing), their kickboxing class, and their weight room. They also offer Capoeira, Brazilian JuJitsu & CrossFit, though I'm pretty sure you have to be deranged to enjoy CrossFit. Or maybe you just like vomiting from exertion. Personally, I do not. The gym's location is pretty good- it's central (just off Ponce, near Piedmont), so it's convenient to most in-town neighborhoods. The parking lot can get packed at certain times (i.e. the 5:30 classes), but street parking is usually available, too. Unit 2's hours are slightly less convenient than those of bigger gyms, but that's what I expect from a smaller gym. Speaking of the gym's total membership size, I love it. This isn't an LA Fitness or a Gold's. It isn't some massive cavern with rows upon rows of sad people miserably walking on treadmills. The space isn't tiny, but it's cozy. There aren't mirrors covering every conceivable surface, and there isn't a stereo cranking out top 40 dance hits on repeat. Unit 2 is a little gritty- which is precisely what I want in my fighting gym. The weight area isn't very large (it can get cramped when it's busy) and there aren't many specialized machines, but I feel like I can get a good lifting workout when I want to. When started my membership, I lacked any fighting experience whatsoever (except for some karate classes... when I was 7). I took advantage of the free week that they offer to prospective members and tried out their beginning Muay Thai class. I had a good experience, so I signed up for 12 months of striking classes. I can only speak to the Muay Thai and boxing classes, and I love them. The class sizes are small (usually 2-12 students of varying skill levels), so every student gets personal attention. The senior students are also friendly and very patient with beginners. Students are mostly young and middle-age guys (of varying shape & size), though women are definitely welcome and do attend. My only gripe is that the first evening class starts at 5:30, so I'm usually late due to traffic (and I have to leave work early to make it). There are a few different instructors that teach the Muay Thai classes, and they're all great. The instructors are varied enough that you have options as to who best fits your personality and skill level. They were really good with me as a beginner, but they work with students of all skill levels. The classes usually consist of a mix of light partner drills, pad work with partners, and occasionally some sparring (intensity is up to you) as well as 10-15 minutes of conditioning drills. In other words, you're not stuck working a heavy bag for an hour. All of the instructors also offer private lessons (for a price), so you can get additional training if you think you need it. I felt like I was going to puke during my first month of taking classes (and I was decently fit), but I just got in better shape (now I just sweat profusely). I highly recommend Unit 2 everybody, especially anyone interested in the combat sports that Unit 2 offers. read more

If you want all the amenities of the so called "gyms", then don't go to Unit 2. This place is one of those simple bare-bones gyms that emphasize actual work instead of pseudo-work. If you're into being seen, go to the glamorous gyms like L.A. Fitness or Colony Square. The staff are all professional and since I'm a jiu jitsu student with Roberto Traven, I have to provide him with my support. There's a reason it was voted best martial arts center in Creative Loafings reader's choice poll this year. It's simple, when you sweat more in training you bleed less in combat. I may not have been attending much lately due to my work schedule, but I am making the time now and don't regret it a bit. Roberto Traven is one of the premier instructors in the world and it shows in the quality of his students and teaching. The tips: 1. Parking is a pain due to the popularity of their classes now. Get there during non-peak times if you're working out otherwise it's the street for you. Lock up your goodies if you park on the street. There are some transients that like to take peeks into cars. 2. If you want to be punished to the max, do the kickboxing/cardio class. So many people walk in and think it's one of those pansy-ass classes like they offer at the big box gyms. You will die, but in a good way. 3. Fantastic jiu-jitsu program that will punish, challenge, and help you progress in the art. It's the ultimate exercise program, complete with bumps, bruises, potential puking, but guaranteed results through dedication. 4. For those of you looking for cardio machines and the like, here's the hint. This is not the place for you. Go to the big box gyms where they'll happily wipe your ass upon request. Here is where you work hard and get results. Nobody stands around and socializes about their lives, nobody cares if you're wearing the latest hip exercise gear, nobody stands around ogling at people. The members are here to get in shape, learn how to be a better warrior, and earn results through dedication. 5. While I personally don't utilize their personal trainer services, my observations of the trainers is that they're top notch. They push their clients hard, support them in their journey, and encourage them to strive for success. They also develop a good rapport with them and it shows in the effort that their clients put into a workout. That's called customer service friends. I have a feeling that Unit 2 is beginning to outgrow their current home and will either attempt and expansion or a move. It just seems logical with its current success. I dig it, make an effort to show up everyday, and have seen the results of my hard work. read more

The trainers here are merciless, which is probably a good thing. I don't know that I've exercised as hard as I did here in a long time. It smells like you came here to sweat, which is probably also appropriate. However, they take care of you. They push in a way that's encouraging - no quitters/slackers allowed. I also liked the little courtesies like them helping you put your boxing gloves on, and that you can buy water from behind the counter that isn't prices so ridiculously that you feel like they're taking advantage of my desperate need for re-hydration. Even with all the effort, it was a lot of fun. If you want to test your endurance and pick up a new skill, definitely check this place out. Just don't be scared off if you have a hard time finding the door, because it's in the back with a questionable looking parking lot. ;) read more

I personally have a hard time sticking with a gym unless I have a goal in mind. Unit 2 is great at giving you goals, and fantastic with making you want to succeed for yourself and for the other folks in class. I've been training at Unit 2 for about 3 months, (give or take) and I can honestly say that this gym will help you get in shape. You're not going to walk into the gym, put in your earbuds, and watch CNBC while walking on a treadmill though, so if you're looking for that kind of workout, stick with what's comfortable. If you really want to get in shape, and get a great workout with a great group of people, this is the place to be. Gyms like this constantly get chalked up to testosterone-laden meathead dens, and I'll admit I was worried about that mindset myself when I started doing jiu jitsu there. What I discovered is that Roberto Traven's BJJ class is full of the nicest, most helpful people you can hope to train with. Everyone that's a member of Roberto's team has a passion for the art, and they're excited to see a newbie develop the same passion. With that being said, be ready to get worked. You're going to be sore. You're going to ache in spots that you didn't know had muscles. If you're a guy, chances are one of the women in class will pwn you on the mats....even if you're much bigger than her. If you don't give up and keep showing up to class, you will start to notice a flatter stomach, better endurance, and more confidence. As far as pricing goes, I pay around the same amount as a YMCA membership would cost, but for me, it's a much better deal. For context, I was a member from 2017 to the start of 2021, and canceled my membership due to an out of state move. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community I found at Unit 2 is unlike any other. Each teammate is welcoming and warm, and regardless of size, stature, age, gender, or orientation, I felt like each person I met there was treated as an equal. Jeff Boudreaux, the head instructor, does a great job at making sure he knows each and every member's name, and helps each one develop a game best suited to their body type, style, and goals. I can personally say that Jeff helped push me to be a better person, on and off the mats. He recognized the potential within me (just like all teammates that step on to his mats) even when I didn't see it in myself, and helped me develop the confidence to break past the limitations I had put on myself to be the type of athlete and competitor I wanted to be. I also have to shout out to assistant instructors Ryne Pilcher and Richard Spencer, who both took time outside of scheduled classes to answer any questions I had and further build my confidence in my style and abilities. I'm grateful for the years that I spent with this team and can't recommend them enough. One last point - Unit 2 has moved to a new facility in Decatur, and its amazing. Pros: Amazing Workouts, Great Instructors. Staff friendly and helpful. Especially for people like me who are new to these type of workouts. I enjoyed the free week prior to joining. I was a bit intimidated because there are like real athlete's there. I kind of use it as inspiration when I see them like ok I'm going to work toward my legs arms looking like that ect.. I use to be a part of a FUE FUE SHE SHE gym in Sandy Springs prior to joining here. There is non of that here. No Fue and No She She!! This place is serious about there workouts with no pretentious attitudes. I do like some instructors better than others but that would be anywhere you go. The workouts are Tough please be prepared to work. stretch especially if your in your late 30's like me lol Cons: Parking. The parking lot is not paved and its small. It can be kind of difficult to get in and out. There is a kind of a get in where you fit in as you go thing going on with the parking. I just get there a bit early so I can find a spot that's not difficult to get out of when class is over. Overall: I love it!! only been here two weeks and lost 8lbs. The community here is incredible. The staff is down to earth and always wants to help you improve. The BJJ classes are some of the most fulfilling experiences I've ever had and the instructors are fantastic. They know when to give you detailed instruction and when stay back and let you figure out your own way. This is a place to train, make friends and gain new skills. I have used this gym for several years now and consistently impressed. Great instructors and love the new changes and improvements to the crossfit and kick box classes. I've recruited several of my friends to join as well. Parking is tight but never really had a problem since they made some changes and the manager is super responsive now. I'm 27 years old, and I guess I was about 225 pounds when I joined (I'm 6'4"). Throughout my adulthood, exercise has been minor and sporadic (I'd do pushups and sit-ups, or I'd start jogging, or I'd start lifting weights - but I could never keep it up longer than a few weeks, for one reason or another). Over the years, my lifestyle has gotten more sedentary, and my fitness level has suffered. I've done pretty much every major drug there is, ate fast food every day for several years, and I've been increasingly inactive. My blood pressure was getting high, my stress level was through the roof, and I was starting to get fat. I wanted - NEEDED - to get in shape, and I wanted to take steps to ensure that I would succeed this time. My girlfriend suggested we join Unit 2, which a couple of her friends had recommended. I'd been considering cardio kickboxing for many years, but never took it further than checking out websites, etc... The idea appealed to me for several reasons: for one, I've always wanted to learn a martial art, but never pursued it. Also, I grew up playing football - I miss being active in a full-contact sport, and I miss the overall level of fitness that it afforded me... Cardio kickboxing and martial arts seemed more and more like something I wanted to be doing. After considering for a while, my girlfriend and I decided to go check the place out and sign up for a free trial week of classes. I'm starting my 4th week of classes today. They offer cardio kickboxing, muay thai/boxing, jiu jitsu, and a few others. So far I've only taken cardio kickboxing, so that is all I can comment on at this point. On my first day, I went in completely out of shape and inactive, not properly hydrated, and basically unprepared for what was coming... I was a smoker at the time too... In terms of intensity, the first day's class was ROUGH. I lost my breath rather quickly, and puked halfway through the workout (I made it to the bathroom first...). But despite how hard it was, I knew that it was what I was looking for. I took the mindset that it wasn't so much the class that made me puke - it was from being in terrible shape... So I came back the next day, and the next day, and the next... I've been surprised with how easy it has been to fit into my schedule - I just had to get used to going straight to the gym after work before I go out for the evening. Looking back, I might suggest that completely inactive people, particularly smokers, prepare themselves with a few days/weeks of jogging + pushups + crunches, or at least some sort of moderate aerobic exercise, before joining. Overexertion, vomiting and exhaustion can be kinda discouraging ("Maybe I wasn't cut out for this sorta thing"), and might keep you from wanting to go back. It's a better experience overall when you can make it through the exercise without pushing yourself too hard. As you can see from the other reviews, treadmills and cardio machines are fairly limited. To set the record straight, they currently have one bicycle, one elliptical machine, and one treadmill. As another post mentioned, however, the primary focus of the gym tends to be on its classes rather than its free-weights and machines. Most people are either there to learn how to fight or to get an intense workout in the kickboxing classes. Weights and cardio machines seem to be used as a supplement or addition to the class workouts rather than the other way around. As a result, the cardio machines tend to be vacant more often than not - In fact, I get the feeling that most gym members do not usually use free weights OR cardio machines (This is purely my general observation, and I could be totally wrong for all I know...) The exterior of the gym does have a slight hole-in-the-wall feel to it, for better or worse. I wouldn't say that it's run-down - just not done-up... I'll agree that the parking lot has the charm of a tow yard, but I think if they got a nicer fence and paved the partially-gravel parking lot, it would have a nicer feel to it. On the other hand, however, one might find that the unpolished exterior suits the strictly-business character of the place. It's about hard work and achieving goals, with little attention being paid to how fancy the place looks. As for the interior, it's fairly plain for the most part. There are a few neat paintings on the walls, but that's about it. One other thing that made this place stand out for me is that they play stuff like The Misfits on the radio instead of techno crap, and some of the members are the punk-rock tattooed type, which I feel much more comfortable around than the typical gym crowd. I haven't encountered one person with a bad attitude or a smug disposition. I would highly recommend Unit 2 for anyone serious about getting in shape, particularly those that find exercise boring, those who lack motivation, or those who think the idea of joining a "gym" is kinda lame. read more

As others stated, it is a little intimidating to walk up on the place - sketchy. Trainers seem like nice people, but the price is too high for what's being offered. I spent a year there (reluctantly) doing the kickboxing classes. Every single class starts with running around the bags - never, not even once, was there an option to warm up outside or do something different. And, every single class was the same basic routine. None of the instructors teach you the proper technique/mechanics of kicking or punching. I watched literally dozens of new folks who didn't get proper training definitely suffer unnecessary bruising. For the record, I was trained by someone who was belted in the New England area and who was insistent on technique. Between the above and their method of doing business, I had to rate them as low as possible. The last charge to my credit card did not go through for a reason they were unable to share. They claim to have emailed me to notify me. Ten months (yes, 10 months) went by and suddenly a charge of nearly $90 appeared on my card! Monthly dues are $65. When I called to inquire - I got, "I'll follow up with the manager". After nearly a month of waiting for a response, I called again. Because the last payment was late, they charged me a $19.50 service fee! That's 30%!!! I don't recall seeing this requirement and find it extremely excessive. Obviously, I HIGHLY recommend you do business with a more reputable business that offers preliminary training if you've had none. read more

I have been practicing Jiu Jitsu for nearly two years at unit 2, and 10 years in total. I started in Florida and then moved to Atlanta and trained at a few schools before I found my home at unit 2. There are some incredible schools in Atlanta and all over the southeast but never have I trained at a place like Unit 2. First off, Jeff, the head instructor, is a brain surgeon when it comes to Jiu jitsu knowledge, he literally picks it apart and breaks It down in ways a dummy like me can really understand it. He has a system that really sinks in like nothing I have learned and he sticks to what is effective for you and helps you dial it in to your full potential. I have never had a coach that I felt wanted me to Succeed to this level. Jeff is the kind of guy who inspires you to dig deep inside and find your full potential. Second, the Friends I have made here have become like family and it's the only school in Atlanta that I have been to that truly made me feel like I was a valuable part of the team. I could literally go on for days about how this place continues to better my life so I will leave it at this; If you are serious about learning incredible Jiu jitsu and want to be part of a group of people that truly care about seeing you grow as an individual and a teammate, then you really should check the place out, you will thank yourself later. read more

This is a actual mix martial arts, cross fit, kickboxing gym, it's where people come to exercise or train and go home. There is no hanging around and nobody cares what you're wearing. Personally, I like that nobody really talks to me. When I'm done I'm sweaty and I'm tired. I first came here because my wife bought a daily deal for kick boxing. When she told me I responded with "ugh, seriously? I hate exercising with other people and I hate exercise classes". Suffice to say, I was less than thrilled. The first class I got there, checked in, got gloves and was told to pick out a heavy bag (but not the century bags as they are old and hard as a rock, which is great advice). Kickboxing classes are 50 minutes. By the end of class I was drenched in sweat, as was most everybody else. It was a good overall workout and I was able to keep up (nothing too complex). The next 10 classes , same thing. I'm sweaty, tired, and got a good workout. Someone told me "I've being doing this a year, it doesn't get easier". My daily deal ended and I signed up for 4 more months. Even after a month I could feel my clothes fitting a more loose. Something else I like about the kickboxing class? It's a good mix of people. It's not huge muscle guys. It's men and women in all ranges of ability. Nobody is even watching you because we're actually exercising. Word to the wise, bring flip flops. I don't know about the women's change room, but the men's is kind of gross. You may want to bring a towel or washcloth as well, like I said you'll be really sweaty. And get to class early. Parking can be tight and you'll need time to change/stretch. I think they do daily deals on a regular basis, so I suggest looking for one. read more

I recently decided to switch from a "big-box" gym to something a bit more personal and Unit 2 seemed like just the place to start looking. At first glance, the location/exterior looks rather run down and pretty sketchy, but inside it's a pretty nice place. There are a couple of rooms for Muay Thai and grappling, an area with heavy bags for kickboxing, a large room with all kinds of free weights, and a couple of cardio machines (literally, a couple -- like 3 max). To get a feel for the gym, I signed up for a free trial week. On my first day, the sales rep I talked with described Unit 2 as a "family" rather than a large, corporate gym where no one knows who you are. He was right. Everyone from the sales/desk staff to the instructors was incredible accomodating and nice. Throughout the week I took 4 or 5 classes (all with different instructors) and loved them all. This is not some aerobics-oriented kickboxing class with poorly trained instructors. The instructors at Unit 2 are real fighters who are teaching you real kickboxing skills (not the dumbed-down version found at other area gyms). The only issue with Unit 2 (the reason I am giving it 3 stars and also the reason I am not a member) is that the prices are a bit expensive. For a gym with very little cardio equipment, it can be hard to justify paying prices that high. Also, there's a one-time fee regardless of whether you are committing to a year-long contract or if you're paying month to month. read more

The good: 1) The location. Right on Ponce. Great for people in Midtown that don't want to drive to Chamblee or OTP for other martial arts classes 2) The instructors. Everyone in martial arts knows who the "Spider" is. I personally had no clue who he was until I mentioned to someone else in California that practices BJJ. The bad (so bad that I would not join the gym again, period) 1) Billing. I had to cancel my membership because I was getting relocated for work. I emailed multiple times, and finally got a response telling me my membership was cancelled. Nevertheless, I 2 months later I received a bill from a collection agency for almost $800. Insane. I spoke to Nick, one of the managers/owners, and he apologized and said he had contacted them to resolve the error. Fast forward to 2 YEARS later, and I had a collection notice from Unit 2 Fitness appear on my credit report dated September of 2015. Filed a dispute with the credit reporting bureau, but of course, that takes months to resolve. I have not been a member of this gym for almost 2 years now. I have received no response from the gym regarding this issue, and in fact, my emails to them have bounced back. read more

I'm unofficially a part of Yelp's In It to Thin It competition (me against myself?), so I got the chance to attend a free class this past Sunday and boy howdy, by muscles hurt so good. My experience with kickboxing stops with the Tae Bo tapes (remember those?) that I was doing like 10 years ago, and honestly, I would much prefer to come here for kickboxing than do another tape with Billy Blanks. It's a basic class, 45 minutes long I think, with a warm-up, lots of kicking, punching, and yes, pivoting, but it's all worth it because you feel with commitment and stick-tuitiveness (new word), that you're getting in shape. I definitely look forward to more classes :-) read more

I was really, really pleased with Unit 2 for the fist few months that I went to the gym -- I took the kickboxing class and it was a great workout. However, I had to cancel my gym membership for a few months because I was traveling a lot for work -- I had them cancel while I was at the gym and made what I thought would be my last payment. Long story short, they never put in that I cancelled my gym membership or it got lost somehow and I'm continuing to be charged for months that I haven't gone. I tried calling the gym to straighten it out and no one could give me an answer. I left messages, no one called me back. I sent emails...and finally after two weeks someone responded with a very short and rude response -- not helpful in the least. Now, I'm being called by their debt collects, who surprisingly were super helpful and said they've had these issues in the past with this gym. I've finally settled this issue (with the debt collector, NOT unit 2). I will NEVER come back nor will I ever recommend this gym to a friend -- while I was there, I got two people to sign up and have let them know the troubles I've had since. read more

After a move, I desperately searched for a new Crossfit gym that wasn't intimidating or crazy expensive and that had knowledgeable trainers. After doing some research I took a class at Unit 2 and have been hooked ever since. I've done Crossfit for a few years off and on and have always really liked kickboxing, and lucky for me this gym has both. Elise is such a motivating Crossfit instructor and has already greatly helped me improve my form and technique. Warren is a fighter who teaches the evening kickboxing class and mixes up the training beyond just kicks and strikes. The classes are not overcrowded and you don't feel like you're at a meat market. I'd say the price is pretty on par with other gyms that offer Crossfit, and Unit 2 offers several options to fit your budget. Justin helped me sign up and he was totally transparent about pricing and billing practices. I also never felt pressured to sign up in the beginning, which put my mind at ease that I was making a great choice. It's a Crossfit/Martial Arts gym (there is also a weight room), so no flat screens, treadmills or steam rooms. If you want to take an hour or so to push yourself and meet really nice people, definitely try Unit 2! read more

I had to stop going due to personal reasons! But when I did go before I stopped, I didn't feel connected to this because it felt as though the teachers never really tried to introduce themselves to new students or give each student attention. There was one who did, and she was sweet and motivating and I believe is the only female instructor so I can't remember her name too well! But whenever I was going for the other classes it didn't feel as though the male kickboxing teachers paid attention to each student or wanted to give attention or start ANY conversation with anyone who wasn't a female or a long time student? So it didn't feel like I was really connecting with the teacher or getting proper feedback on how I did in class today and what not. Plus there were also somethings I, being new, wasn't sure how to do! It was just "do this and follow in foot" no explanation at all. And let's not forget the contract they lock you in for a year once you start. That's honestly not fair nor something I would recommend any business should do. The only way to get out of it is if you move far away?!?!?! Like, what?! There's a lot of negatives I could list, but let's talk about the positives! The receptionist is a sweet guy, great female instructor, lots of things to learn, but this place just didn't fit me to be quite honest. Don't believe everything I said? Try it for yourself! read more
