My children and I have been training at Tsunami since March of 2018. It's quickly become a 2nd home for our family. My three older children train in Taekwondo and I train in Muay Thai and cardio kickboxing.
The instructors and the owner Paul, while having high expectations, are warm, kind, and respectful to both adults and children. They are truly invested in encouraging members and furthering their training. My kids are learning valuable life skills like perseverance, self discipline, self defense, and respect for themselves and others.
All of the instructors, the owner, and the management staff know us all by name and have since the week we started. The owner refers to the members as the "Tsunami Family" and it definitely feels like a family. They are very family friendly and safe gym. Kids and adult classes for cardio kickboxing, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, and BJJ often overlap or are closely scheduled so that families can train simultaneously or in a close time frame.
I think my favorite thing about the gym is that the instructors meet new people where they are. They are inclusive and stay far away from the meathead mentality. When I started, I hadn't been active in any substantive way for 10 years because of being busy having and taking care of 4 children. I started in cardio kickboxing but found myself drawn to Muay Thai. After a bit of encouragement, I tried a class and loved it. It didn't matter that I was new or had no background in martial arts, the instructors and students were very welcoming and helpful in helping me build my skill set quickly. Because of the skill of the instructors, I'm far stronger now in my early 40s, than I ever have been.
Tsunami is a great gym and we plan on being there for a long time.
** I just read a previous review and was appalled at the inaccuracies. I was present for the events mentioned by another reviewer referring to sweeps and safety and the account of events is inaccurate and incomplete. I was one of two women who had had experiences with an overly aggressive member in a "light sparring" session. He is likely speaking about either me or the other female member. She is a black belt in Taekwondo and I've been training and sparring at this gym for almost a year without incident. It's laughable and misogynist that he described either one of us "a know it all and a trouble maker" and excused the overly aggressive guy. Someone he had sparred only once. A concussion, while not visible, is indeed a serious injury, which is what occurred. Apparently expressing a desire to not have a head injury and have agency over physical well-being is unacceptable his eyes.
The person who wrote the review trained at the gym for a week *at most* and thinks he is in a position to evaluate the events that transpired. Several attempts were made to curb the overly aggressive behavior without effect. The owner was ensuring that they took safety seriously so ALL members can train without fear of having someone take advantage and cause injury because of more experience or a size differential. This is a family friendly gym that is the antithesis of meathead gyms and focuses on control and safety. They take steps necessary steps to address issues when they (very occasionally) occur, which is what you want in a gym unless you are looking for a free for all where people beat each other up without regard to team members safety.
The owner was acting appropriately in order to ensure that all members can train and learn in a safe environment. Additionally, there IS also water available from a dispenser and you only need to bring a water bottle which the front office staff will tell you before you arrive to train. There are also bottles of water available for purchase. Yet another inaccuracy in the review. If you check out the guys other reviews, you'll observe that he gives one or two star reviews to the majority of the businesses he frequents, so take his word with a big grain of salt. This gym is indeed a friendly, and above all safe, place to train. read more
