I have done BJJ at 3 other gyms and this is by far the best. Everyone I've come across has an attitude to help and no one has "gone to far" in rolling. There is a general attitude of respect, not just socially but respect to not injure your teammate. The staff take cleanliness seriously, being the only gym (or business for that matter) to supply disinfectant wipes to clean feet and hands to eliminate the spread of staph. Mats are routinely swept and disinfected. I participate in the Gracie Combatives curriculum which has a limited number of techniques to keep you safe in a street fight with a focus on both parties leaving uninjured and resolving the conflict with negotiation once you have gained control of the perpetrators body. The fact that the curriculum has a limited number of techniques is important because at the other schools it would be a new technique every week, which meant I mastered nothing and was often overwhelmed. Because the Combatives program repeats the same 23 lessons, I now have a chance to master the techniques so it is more likely to be muscle memory when I need it most. read more

The entire program starts with critical self-defense techniques (including specifics for Children and Women) that cover a broad set of scenarios, and are incredibly practical and real-world. This includes common sense yet overlooked stuff like de-escalation "getting out of there" and related mindsets and techniques that help avoid physical confrontations of various kinds. From there, you learn how to handle opponents to the point of total control - without kicks or punches - so you can continue "negotiations" with them to de-escalate safely. From there, things get heavier - but only if absolutely needed. After you've run through this critical program, you go far deeper into the art, philosophy, and techniques of Brazilian Jujitsu. It's a deeply compelling and extraordinarily fun world to play in. And you continually touch back in with the core self-defense aspects as well. In the world of BJJ, there's literally room for everyone. Like, everyone. BJJ is brilliant in this way - it "meets you where you're at". Old, young, big, small, nerds, jocks, and everyone in between. All my life, I've been extremely active but age, career, and family ended up slowly chiseling this part of me away. Gracie Decatur has gotten me back in touch with this part of myself, which is a gift that his hard to describe. Both of my sons are students as well, and we have a common topic to chat about, compare notes over, and even spar down in the garage. Literally priceless. The coaches - all of them - are awesome. One last note: when I was 19 I was hurt badly via a sucker punch and subsequent beating I took on the ground after getting jumped in Miami. I'm 53 years old right now and can say with certainty that the outcome of that exchange would have ended very differently were it happen today. Think about that: I'm in nowhere near the shape that I was in back then, and have only a fraction of the physicality. But now looking back, I know the exact moment(s) when I could have defended myself much more effectively and neutralized the threat completely or avoided the injuries that I incurred. Coach Jason and Coach Alora are super friendly and welcoming. They treat their students like family and you will even get to meet their kids and cute puppy dog. They are very invested in helping their students master each technique and the female-only classes are an awesome way to learn moves in a low pressure environment. Also, with regards to Gracie Jiujitsu in general, I really appreciate that this network of dojos offers online videos for review at home and the techniques never assume that you are the bigger fighter. So, after years of too much beer, Chinese food and Netflix, I've gone way, way beyond Dad bod and need to get off the sofa and do something about it. I could jog or bike, but if I'm going to devote time to exercising, why not learn a useful skill at the same time? I've been coming to Gracie Decatur for a couple of months now and feel very lucky to have found them. Honestly, it's so much fun that I'm regularly driving home with a huge grin plastered across my face. I'm only a white belt and obviously there are much more qualified folks, but these are my impressions so far. The academy is relatively new, established about 6 months ago. It's run by the husband and wife team of Jason and Alora Brock, with their kids frequently training or hanging out in the academy, making for a super family-friendly environment. Head coach Jason is an energetic and engaging instructor, using humor to illustrate his points and often having the students chuckling; once seen, the Playgirl, Spiderman and Living-the-dream positions are impossible to forget. If you search online about starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you'll find articles on "how to survive as a white belt", describing beginners being thrown in the deep end, sparring from their very first lesson and getting repeatedly smashed into the mat by more advanced students. That doesn't happen here. They use the Gracie University curriculum, with the adult beginner classes learning a set of fundamental techniques called Gracie Combatives. In this method, free sparring is not introduced until later, but hopefully gives you a solid foundation to rely on in self-defense and build upon when the free-sparring struggle-cuddles start. I'm a middle-aged man with a family and I appreciate being able to exercise, drill the techniques and come home not wincing from too many bruises. Enrollment gives you access to the online Gracie University, a set of highly-detailed instructional videos, which I've found to be a fantastic resource for home study. Traditional martial arts have probably been taught in essentially the same way for thousands of years, but this changes the game, incorporating modern technology into the curriculum so that students can have a basic understanding of a technique prior to class. This frees the coaches to teach in greater depth, rather than just "this-hand-goes-here, that-hand-goes-there". It's great for reviewing and reinforcing the memory. Membership also allows you to train at any Gracie Certified Training Center, anywhere in the world, which I'm hoping to take advantage of on future travels. From personal experience, I know that it's difficult to step out of your comfort zone and make the decision to start a martial art, and that it's intimidating to set foot inside a martial arts gym for the first time. At Gracie Decatur, I found a friendly, supportive and welcoming environment. Though I know that most of these folks will be tying my limbs into a pretzel, they will be doing it with consideration, a smile and a fist-bump afterwards. In short, I'm having a blast training here and I sincerely regret that I didn't start years ago. Highly recommended. read more

This studio is so warm and welcoming! We tried all the different martial arts in Decatur before landing here. My children were instantly comfortable, and they get a lot of one-on-one time with the coaches during lessons. I ended up taking a self-defense class also and I really enjoy it.
