I found TX5J Handyman ("Daniel & Crew") on Yelp and contacted them. Danel came over, did a detailed FREE inspection and gave me a competitive quote in 24 hours. I then decided to hire them for the job. They came in at 7:30 A.M. in the morning to beat the summer heat. It requires piping and extension exhaust vent directly to outside top siding. After touring my home and discussing the project I had in mind he had a detailed multi-page proposal for me. The first bed I received from a contractor was literally an email that went something like, Kitchen: 15k, Bathroom: 10k, Garage: 15k...Not very assuring. Shawn and his team were assuring from the get go. Communication with everyone on the team from his right-hand man, Oscar, and design wiz, Sara, to the plumber and electrician were streamlined by use of an app called Slack they use. This was so useful when you are working on a mult-month job and always have a ton of little questions or concerns. I could easily just shoot it out into the app and anyone on his team could respond. I loved that. And these guys are top-notch. Oscar did some amazing things in here. When we found an unexpected load-bearing beam, he expertly engineered a huge beam across the near-length of the kitchen that allowed us to fully open up the area...without hiring an engineer (my decision). That thing was solid. Then he took my dated fireplace and lathered it in multiple layers of concrete and mortar to make what is now a piece of modern art. Sara and Shawn both have an eye for design. When I sent a photo of one of my bathrooms to a friend she told me it looked with the W. In a few areas of the house they kind of nudged me to let them have some artistic leave and I am so glad they did. My master bath is now a study in what you should do for any small bathroom space and my laundry room has added about 100+ square feet to the home and functions as a mud room. All of the contractors he works with are exceptional as well. I will always use David O from Make it Drain plumbing and Irvin with Retiz Electric. I worked with Shawn on the design and he was always openminded about what I wanted to do and willing to provide suggestions or recommendations. His team of subcontractors did quality work and were respectful of me and my home. I had lots of people in and out of my house and had full trust in them. Most importantly, Shawn is an excellent communicator. He is always a text or phone call away, and would make time in his busy schedule to drop by the house and meet with me as needed. I have heard horror stories from my friends of contractors who disappear in the middle of a project or fail to respond to requests for updates or questions. I had none of these problems with Shawn. My renovation turned into a much bigger project in terms of the amount of changes that were made, but it never felt hopeless or endless, and the end result made it all worth it. I will definitely use InsideOut again for my next renovation project! Until then I'll just be living on the prettiest house on the block, thanks to Shawn.

I've had to threaten to go to court at this point because they are refusing to refund $6,000 for a job that was never performed and because of their complete lack of communication and very POOR customer service. After two weeks of waiting on a refund, I was told that I'm emotional, angry, upset, etc. Both Robert and his wife Stephanie have said these things to me verbally over the phone. Then I was told I am the problem. Would you not be upset if someone was holding $6K of your money and refusing to give it back and just giving excuses? Basically, I call and get name called and when I respond in like, I'm the "emotional" one. They said deposits are not refundable in general... Nowhere in the contract or the few emails I have was I ever told that I this money was non-refundable. I would not have signed the contract had I known this. In my experience, you pay a contractor at completion or the money is refundable. Also, I was never told or given a timeline for my job so it is the reason I reached out frequently (with no response from them) and ultimately decided I did not want to work with this company anymore. Here's my detailed experience: I requested an estimate 3 months ago. No one reached out to after this appointment. I had to reach out to them ~3-4 weeks later for the estimate. After requesting two things removed, I paid it. Then I reached out several times via calling and emailing to see when my job would be scheduled for. My emails were completely ignored. When I called I was always told by Stephanie that Robert would give me a call back and he never did. It went like this for months. Finally, I left a message stating that I needed to know when I was on the schedule or that I wanted my money back so I could hire someone else. Stephanie called back and said potentially 5/17 and that Robert someone else would call to confirm. On 5/10 I still had no confirmation that they would be there the following week and I had an urgent family situation come up. I decided it wasn't worth the headache anymore to keep trying to deal with this so I called and requested my money back. That's when their true colors really started to show. Stephanie and Robert told me how they are family people and their intentions are to do best by their customers and they wanted to make this right. Ha. Ha. Ha. Jokes on me because I really believed them at first. I again waited a week, didn't hear back. Called and talked to Robert finally who said he has to "chase" down my money and would update me by the end of the week. ONCE AGAIN, he did not call my by the end of the week, so I called him late afternoon on Saturday, left a voicemail and texted. He said I could call anytime. So I call back this morning, he was upset that I had called and texted late Saturday, yet he's the one who said I could call anytime....... He told me "you are angry" and it's making you "forget things". I asked for proof in writing where it states the timeline for my job and that the deposit was non-refundable. He told me, "I never put timelines in writing because I don't want to be held to it." THERE IT IS!!!! So Robert and Stephanie don't want to be held accountable to do the work in a timely manner, but they want to hold me accountable for the money. I finally had to say if I do not have my money back by the end of the week, I'm filing a lawsuit in small claims court. I do not want to do this at all. It's just another headache to go through. But I will not stand by and let someone steal $6,000 from me.
