I was in need of getting my hair braided before my vacation. I looked on yelp for african hair braiders and saw Unique braids I decided to try them since all of the reviews were positive. I called and she took me last minute she was very quick and polite. She even curled my hair for me which some shops don't do without an extra fee, she also told me to look in the mirror to see if i liked it thats something I haven't heard out of the mouths of too many hairdresser ... The only down side was she was on the phone for about 2 hours talking loudly in my ear thats the reason i gave only 4 stars but once she got off it was smooth sailing.... Wow, Adama produced beyond expectations! I am a Caucasian girl with fine, curly hair. I am going to Burning Man for 13 days, and at home my hair care routine is extensive and I would have a really hard time maintaining healthy hair in the sun and sand of the playa. I had a consultation with her thinking I was going to get yarn braids, but she quickly suggested kinky twists, which I had of course never heard of. I trusted her judgement, and boy am I happy I did! I would give 0 stars if i could. I booked an 11am appointment with a woman i thought was Adama, later on i found out Adama was on vacation and wouldnt be back for a month or two. I came in at 11am and found that my braider wasnt done with her previous appointment. 11:15, 11:30, 11:45, she was still working on her previous client. She started my hair after 12pm (unprofessional), i showed her a picture of the style i wanted on my phone, she said she could do it. She spent the next hour yelling conversations to her friends and family (ALL of them i guess) via her cell phone (unprofessional). She was heavy handed and rough with my hair, and braided much too tight. Halfway through she told me she had messed up and would need to undo what she had done so far to give me the style i wanted. I told her that there wasnt time for her to re-do it because i had to be out of there by 2:30 to get to work on time(which is why i set the appointment for 11AM). Since there wasnt enough time to give me the style that i wanted, i told her to just make it nice and pretty, she said ok. 2:20 rolls around and shes still yanking and twisting. I ask her if she almost done because..again, i have to leave by 2:30, she says shes almost done and proceeds to twist my hair into what looks like i have a horn on top of my head. I dont like it, i ask her to change it, she barely tries to make it look better, and i didnt have the time to change it because now im late for work. I paid her and left quickly. I call her later from work, after ive had a full chance to look at it, i tell her that the braids are frizzy, theres some hair unbraided hair in the back, the style isnt pretty at all, and the list goes on. I ask her to fix this as soon as possible, and i let her know that im available the next day. She apologizes and tells me to call her back in the morning, which i do, but now she avoids all of my calls(liar, and a thief) I think its also important to mention that there was another lady waiting to get her hair done by one of the other girls who works there. Her braider was over TWO hours late. Bottom line, this place is completely unprofessional, they dont know how to show up on time, they stay on their cell phones while they do sub par work, and the place is dirty. Do NOT come here. There are soooo many other braiders to choose from in oakland. This is one of the worst braiding experiences ive ever had. This business doesnt deserve our hard earned money. People deserve to be treated better than this. read more

I called and told her I would be there in 15 min, I left work on my lunch and found parking DTown Oakland. I walk in and one of the associates said she just left. Like really?? I just called. I decided to go here because my regular braider (Adom Hair Braiding) was a bit far and it was pouring rain. I will start by saying when I called they were very nice. I did not have time to buy my own hair so they bought it for me and gave me the receipt for reimbursement. Now my appointment was for 9am. I got there right on time. I had to wait 15-20 minutes and had to call the owner before the door could be opened. After getting in the store, my braider was not even there. She got there at 9:45am and I had to wait while she ate her breakfast. Finally, she started my hair a little after 10am. She was SLOOOOOOOOOOW. I have never had medium braids take 10.5 hours to do. The owner talked too much. It took her 8 hours to do a weave. Good work poor time management skills. Yaa at Adom I am coming back!!!! My friend referred me to Adama. I called and managed to get an appointment the next day! My hair is long, about 18" and she single braided it for 7 hours. She was very kind and a joy to talk to! We had a few good laughs, and she recorded movies, so I had something to watch. It was my first time gettng braids, so if it's your first time know that: -it's like having multiple parts of your hair pinched and it's going to sting. -she has to pull your head to make the braid taut, so deal with it. -she checks to see if it's too tight, but for cauc hair, just deal with it because any loose and it's going to slip out. -you will resist with your neck when your hair is being pulled, and your neck hurts, but my neck didn't hurt until the 6th hour. Over all, I had a fantastic experience and I am totally coming back! read more

I just got my hair Braided this weekend at Unique Braids. Adama was very busy and had 4 people with 9am appointments. Her friend Tina did my hair and all i can say is WOW!!! As I was getting my hair done, i watched the workmanship of all the women, they all do exceptional work!! You tell them what you want, they give you a book that shows all the braid sizes and prices. Also, she has hair in stock for less than the beauty supply stores. I will be returning for all my braiding needs. The prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere is very welcoming. I recently came here to get my 6 year old's hair braided (cornrows with added hair, curls at the end). We arrived for our 4pm appointment and was informed that there would be a wait. Apparently one of their clients was late to her appointment in the morning and this caused a domino effect for other appointments scheduled that day. Not a huge deal except that I had two antsy children with me. After waiting a full hour, I stood up and told the lady that we would have to reschedule. She asked us to stay, stating that the braider was minutes away. She even offered me additional change to pay for parking, which was nice. Once the braider arrived, she went right to work. I was pleased with her work (she finished my daughter's hair in a couple of of hours) and it looked great! Bonus: she didn't braid her hair too tightly. That being said, its been a couple of weeks and one of the braids came loose from the top (not good). I took the loose braid down but for the money and time spent, I'm a little disappointed. I will probably use them again but will definitely call before coming for the appointment to make sure they are on-time. Drove All The Way to Oakland in rush-hour traffic and to my surprise.. The shop is CLOSED!! I couldn't believe it.. So, I call AGAIN and Once AGAIN the phone goes to voicemail!! Awesome braids-at a great great price! 2 gals there are super nice and friendly, and we watched nigerian(???)soap opera (and it was quite fun) as they braided my hair ready for burning man. They mixed different colors into braids on their own for me and I got tons of compliments at burning man. Because I asked for not too tiny braids, they lowered the price for me, and within couple of hours, they fixed me up nice and funky-thank you!!! A couple of years ago, I discovered Adama as I was tired of getting my hair done under semi professional conditions. I either had to have my hair done by someone with adequate skills but the environment and timing were less than desirable for a business person such as myself; or, the environment was suitable and the skills and business practices were not up to par. After my first visit, I was impressed. She was on time, her price was more than fair for her meticulous work. Adama can present as a little rough around the edges, but she is one with a heart of gold who takes pride in her craft. She has a technique that is truly unique and hard to find in other braiders. Yelp isn't showing this so posting again to save a victim: ADAMA ASSAULTED ME WITH SCISSORS AND I CALLED THE POLICE ON HER!! I'm convinced her other reviews are paid for/ fake. Do not come here. She is not skilled with braiding at all. I asked her to give me twists that began at the root and she said that she could not do this. How are you the owner of a braid shop, but you can't twist properly. From the first twist I told her what I wanted and she couldn't do it. I then told her that I if she couldn't do it, that was ok, but I don't want to pay for something that I'm not happy with. Because she didn't really care about what I wanted she kept telling me she could do what I wanted. After showing me the other clients hair, which didn't look that great, but I didn't want to offend her, I said I should go. She insisted that she could do what I asked, so I stayed. At this point she has cut my bundles of hair in half, so my hair isn't even going to be the length that I want, but seeing that she's started my hair 2 hours late, I don't have anymore time to waste. She continues to do my hair assuring me that she can do it, but as she goes on she does it incorrectly. I say that I am unhappy and she says "since you're unhappy, I want you to pay me 80% now or I'm not finishing your head." I say no that's not how it is done in usual braiding shops. At this point she has done 10 small braids in the corner of my head so I say I'm leaving (what else can I do if she won't continue.) She proceeds to attack me with scissors. Stopped by to ask if they could do some Havana twist in my hair. Their was a lady braiding a man's head. I stood there waiting to be acknowledged but she continued to braid like she didn't see me. I finally walked right up to her and asked if she could do the twist and how much it would cost. She rattled off a price rudely and I asked her did she have any pictures of her work. She said "I don't need pictures, I know how to braid!" I was so taken aback I didn't know what to say. I asked her if she had a card and she said no and to look at her reviews because they speak for themselves. Well excuse the hell out of me. Just because you are from Africa doesn't mean you don't have to show the work you've done. It is always nice to see someone's work and if you are skilled than you would want to show it off. I recently got my hair braided at Unique Braids after a braider from another business cancelled my appointment last minute due to illness. I called Unique Braids and the owner also had a cancellation so we were both in luck! The owner as a braider was highly skilled, fun to speak with, and professional. I've been to many shops that had a "social nastiness" vibe that made me feel uncomfortable, but this was not an issue here. The shop was very clean, well lit and the owner had good taste in television shows for entertainment (I don't get to watch TV often so this was a treat). I opted for long and small singles and they were so perfect that when my husband saw me I'm pretty sure he was drooling-Mission accomplished!
