Zahra is a life saver. Just moved to Nashville and it was the morning of a big event when my outfit arrived. It was a two piece pencil skirt and crop top. It fit fine but the bottom of the crop top was just a little large so it flared when I put my coat on. After reading the reviews, I called Zahra on a whim. I explained what I needed done and told her I understood if she couldn't accommodate. She told me to get it to her as soon as I could and she would get it done. I can't say enough wonderful things about Zahra and my experience with Unique Alterations. I get a little social anxiety and am always a nervous talker, but Zahra put me at ease right away and I looked forward to our sessions. I had her do two dresses- my wedding dress was three pieces that had to be altered individually, and my rehearsal dress was this $25 dress I had gotten years before but never wore because it needed to be shortened. Her work speaks for itself, but it was how she made me feel so comfortable that makes my 5 star review seem like it should be 10. When I picked up the dress for the final fitting, I was nervous about the separate top staying tucked under the belt, and Zahra took another few minutes right then to sew on little snaps that held everything in place perfectly. I wish I could give this shop 5 stars. Zahara is a very sweet person. However, I am just terribly disappointed in what happened, and for the $110 price tag, feel I deserved better. I took a bridesmaids dress to Zahara that had been altered by another seamstress near my home - the first seamstress had taken a shortcut with the sides when she took it in, gathering/bunching the extra fabric it at the hips instead of removing it and it looked like a bag. Zahara was up front in telling me that it would be a lot of work to fix and that it would cost me a bit. I agreed, as I had only 1 week until I needed the dress for the wedding. We also agreed that she would move the straps over to provide more bust support as I have an EBF newborn and needed it to be supportive. When I went for a fitting/to pick up the dress, I was ecstatic to see that the sides had been fixed. They truly looked lovely! I could not be happier with that. She did that very elegantly and I am really grateful. However, when the straps were moved, the pleats on the bust were loosened somehow. They simply weren't as tight as they had been before, and on one side in particular they were coming completely un-gathered to the point that you could see through to the layers underneath and clearly see through to the edge of the cup inside! What happened next was the most upsetting part. I pointed it out to her, and she repeatedly told me no, no that's how it is made. I tried saying, "what if it were just pulled a little tighter so that the top seam holds the pleats in place?" (which is how pleats like that are held in place...). She said no that would be awful. I held it there with my finger and the problem was fixed, but she moved my finger saying no, no, don't do that. Then, in a bit of a panic, I showed her the line of the cup and how it was showing through - certainly NOT how a $300 designer bridal party dress is supposed to look - and she said, quote "you're looking at it too closely." I was really stunned. In my fluster, I thought maybe, in fact, I was wrong. What do I know, after all? So I paid, took the dress home and tried it on for my husband. He agreed immediately - that's NOT how the dress looked when I dropped it off. The problem had been introduced there. I took some pins from my sewing kit, and pinned it in place the way I had suggested to Zahara it might be fixed and VOILA. Problem solved. So, the day of our departure for the wedding, I found myself frantically sewing a dress that I had now paid TWO seamstresses a total of nearly $200 to alter. The fix took me exactly 10 min to make. Unfortunately, it's obvious and inelegant if you see it from the inside. It's true that I am not good at conflict. I should have insisted BOTH times to each seamstress that the problem needed to be corrected before I paid. That's actually why I pointed it out to Zahara, after learning the hard way about not speaking up with the first seamstress. But, Zahara was so adamant, and I was thinking, well, I'm not the expert. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. But, now that it's fixed and I see the difference, it's clear I was in the right. It was very poor on her part to try to talk me into believing I was "seeing things," and I feel very frustrated that I paid so much just to have to fix ANOTHER problem myself that was introduced under her care. It will be easy to try to say I'm a hard to please customer, or that I'm too picky. But, that's honestly not the truth. I just wanted my dress to be altered to look as it's supposed to. Not to have obvious problems. I'm going to try to upload photos of before and after I made the fix to help illustrate my point. (Mint green dress with a pleated bust.) Note that before the pleats are loose and billowing; after, they are flat. It still doesn't look like it did originally, but is now much better since I tacked it. I'm sorry to leave this negative review. I really don't like doing it. I am not out to bash her. But, even if I was in the wrong, she should have worked with me on it. If she'd been even a little willing to try to help me feel good about how the breast pleats looked, or experimented with a solution while I was there, even just to appease me as the customer, it would have gone a long way. read more

I used Zahra to alter my wedding dress - not much needed to be done - just the top taken in and a bustle added. The bustle turned out GORGEOUS - and the dress fit like a glove! I was very pleased. It was a tad pricey, but with the intricate bustle, I think it was worth every penny! Just be aware, she only accepts cash so come with plenty on hand when you go to pick up your dress (or there is an ATM across the street at Walgreens). read more

I had my first appointment with Zahra in early July, and it is July 21st, and I brought my dress home today. She works so quickly, yet carefully, and she is so accommodating when picky brides like me want to see how things will look multiple ways. So patient with constant pinning and unpinning and looking at the dress from every angle. I can't overstate her patience and good attitude. When I was troubled by an issue with the way my dress was made, Zahra got in touch with the designer to see how we could fix it! She put extra work into making sure my dress was perfect and, again, was as sweet as could be. I cannot recommend the work or atmosphere at Unique Alterations more highly. read more

Despite all the other great reviews my experience was awful with this business. To make a story short i brought in items, some with tags to get altered. I was helped promptly i do have to say and also given the total amount of the service on the spot. Was told to come back in a week. I picked up my items a week and a day later didn't really fully look at the work right there, my mistake. I went to work and then when i got home that night as i went to try on my clothes I discovered that it was done/fixed very poorly and actually ruined. 3 of garments unworn and with tags on still are ruined. One skirt which fit right at my knee when purchased, i specified only one inch higher please. It is now a complete mini skirt that i cant even bend over to pick something up because it's completely inappropriate she took off at least 3 inches off. A pair of shorts that show the mediocre sewing through the front... she didnt even make a hem for them. Once again ruined and unworn. A dress that the threading is already coming apart and shows my skin through the openings... also she ripped it and blamed it on prior seamstress. My dress had no rip when i dropped it off. The worst wasnt all of this but how things went when i went back to show her my clothes and also ask for some compensation back given that my items may be ruined because obviously i cant glue back fabric that was cut off. She was extremely confrontational with me and offered to fix her mistakes but reality of that is that i personally dont feel comfortable with handing her my clothes again and the fact that she offered to fix did indeed show that she gave me work that she did and it was bad. Anyways she got upset and told me that she wasnt going to give me any money back and raised her voice at me. I remained calm and told her that it was fine i just wanted her to see for herself what she did to my clothes and understand that i just dont trust her with anymore fixing and that I wouldnt be coming back. All in all i wasnt expecting the $110 she charged me back, but at least something to compensate that i wont be able to wear these garments and will have to go to donation. For me personally i would recommend dealing with this lady given that she is unable to have a civilized conversation nor receive constructive criticism but if anyone decides to try it out i would advice to not pay ahead of time and to examine your clothing before and after. I have taken several dresses here for alterations and have been very pleased. Zahra is very personable and sweet. She does her work quickly and beautifully. She has fitted dresses for my daughters also. The only reason I did not give five stars is because the parking lot is very small and is always packed. There is not much space to turn around to pull out either. It would be nice if there was a website that listed her services and base prices or if she had this posted in the office. This was not a problem for me, but you should be aware that she does not accept debit or credit cards. She does take personal checks, however. read more

Zahra has been an absolute blessing to my wedding - my dress fits me now as if it was created just for me. I was so stressed when I first brought it to her because it hung off me in the most unflattering ways and I couldn't imagine anyone being able to fix it, particularly because it is all lace. The whole reason I chose my dress was for the way the sample fit me in store, and once MINE came in...it was a box. The straps were thicker, it was tight under the arms, it tented away from my back and waist. Zahra was calm and clearly had a game plan. She made me feel so much more at ease during my first fitting with her. When I came back for my second fitting I almost broke down in tears I was so happy and relieved!!!! My dress is so beautiful and comfortable and beyond what I could have asked for. You would never know it was altered, it's meticulous and the bustle is absolute perfection. Zahra did an incredible job on my bridesmaids dress that needed several alterations. The style was a high neck tulle which was baggy and difficult to take in. Now, the dress looks perfectly altered to me! I could tell she knew exactly what to do before I even said what needed done. She is professional and so kind. Took my wedding dress in about 8 days before my wedding to have last minute alterations done to the neckline of my dress. The owner was very nice and got me in ASAP to take a look. My strapless dress wasn't laying correctly, so the owner (I can't remember her name) removed about 1 inch of excess fabric across the top. My dress was plain crepe, no beads or lace, etc. I know absolutely nothing about alterations. For reference, it cost about $100 for these alterations. The alterations were simple (from my understanding) but well done, at least to my untrained eye. Both when dropping off and picking up my dress, I was in and out of the shop in no time.
