So I am so shook because I didn't read any reviews till after I came here. Y'all....I'm pretty damn picky. I grew up with a family full of nurse practitioners and physicians. So there are 2 things I give a damn about when going to a doctor....and I don't see human doctors any differently that animal doctors (vets). 1) bedside manner 2) you've gotta be a solid stick when drawing blood. If either of those two things suck, my usual, very calm, very kind, mellow, very gentle energy will sharpen up. I walked in and it's a teeeeny tiny waiting room. So there's not a lot of room, but my curvy self and tiny doggo fit just fine :) I picked up real quickly on all the queer inclusive insignia. My eyes take note of that stuff. Seeing as I was dressed as the gayest femme lumberjack in the city, my queer ass appreciated that. Now mind you....they ask for a stool sample when coming in...and I swear I had no idea how I was going to get Finch to shit on command ...but I a short walk away and thank goddess my pooch squeezed out the tiniest shit minutes before walking in the door. Praise be! Now, Finch is a service dog. He is not an ESA. He goes to restaurants, museums, the barber shop...with me. Typically he doesn't engage with anyone. But it was really important to me that he felt loved and comfortable and like he was just greeting friends at this clinic. I don't want him to be scared of the vet. So, I let him greet people and wander around the patient room to say hi to whoever walked in. This dog was in JEAVEN because he NEVER gets to interact anywhere we go. And I think it definitely helped his energy. I really, REALLY appreciated the staff here. Every single person--from the staff who checked me in, the folks who clipped his nails(thank you Aaron and Allison for that!), to Dr. Allison Gross who was his doctor ---were so lovely. The Only time I almost sharpened up was when a tech was drawing blood from Finch and...there just isn't any way to say this other than...he was just not very good at the stick. I saw him push in and pull out the need about 3 times before he let Dr. gross do a butterfly stick on his leg. Like I said...I'm only very particular about a few things ...and drawing blood is a big one. However, the tech himself was really kind and so sweet. I hadn't been able to take Finch to the vet last year. I had his full year of Heartworm/flea preventative--so I needed a prescription for his meds. It was a little strange that I got a photo of the hand written script'--i'm used to a typed digital prescription, but that's not a big deal. I attached our receipt from our first visit so you can take a gander at the costs. There's an $87.50 doctor's visit charge that was waived since this was our first time in. But honestly, I don't really qualify this as super expensive. I pretty much expect it for a yearly visit. Anyway, Finch was in heaven being able to actually get pets from people and interact with them and the staff was great. I recommend these folks.

I have been taking my dogs to Union Vet since I moved to Capitol Hill 20 years ago. They do a great job. My most recent experience was having my Welsh terrier Lily's teeth cleaned yesterday. I was very happy with every aspect of the care. In particular, I appreciated that Dr. Applebee updated me with 2 phone calls during the day that Lily was at the clinic, which included her having anesthesia. Lily is a very important part of our lives, & Dr. Applebee understands & respects that fact.

They are very nice especially the doctors, they are very thorough and examining the pets and they take their time explaining the medical condition, options of treatment, and the cost of the treatment upfront so what I tell you is how much it's going to cost No hidden fees or surprises.

If you care at all about your animal DON'T bring them here!!! I thought that paying twice the amount as other places for my dogs neutering ($490 with microchip) would ensure a great experience, but sadly I was wrong. When I brought my dog home after his surgery, he was whining in pain the whole ride home. Once I got into the house, I realized they LEFT THE CATHETER IN his arm from the surgery. I called Union Vet Clinic and told them... to the response of "oh shit". They said I shouldn't take it out at home and that he should be brought back to the office. (Mind you I live in NW DC and it's over 30 minutes one way.) I check the time and ask if they will still be there in 30 mins which they said they would be. I arrived about 10 minutes before their 8pm closing time. The tech took my dog to remove the catheter, and I asked to speak to the Vet about what happened. I wanted to have my dog checked over once more by the Vet since the Tech's negligence caused me to have to come back. I also had some follow up questions about his medication and about some redness I observed on the area. Being a concerned first time pet mom, I wanted to be certain he was checked after being under anesthesia. On top of this, the front end staff was extremely rude and unprofessional. They told me that the Vet was on the phone and could not come down to assess my pets condition. (Outside due to Covid restrictions) They told me to leave and he would call in 20 minutes. I reminded them that the only reason I was there was due to their mistake, and that I wanted the Vet to look him over before I drove another 30 minutes home. The staff turned all the lights in the business off and locked the door. After calling multiple times and insisting that I speck with a Veterinarian one finally came outside around 8:15pm, (25 minutes after I arrived) I spoke with the Office Manager the next day who offered me a $75 credit "in case I should return for an appointment". NO THANK YOU! I wouldn't put my pet into harms way for $75. Couldn't be more disappointed - not only in the business and unnecessary money/time/energy spent that day, but in the LACK OF COMPASSION the staff at Union Veterinary Clinic had for me or my dog. #dobetter

TL;DR: They, literally, watched my dog decline (and die the next day) in front of their eyes DURING our appointment and said "you'll have to make another appointment." So let's go back... We're new to the 'hood. We come in with our two fur babies for getting their shots updated. They actually muzzle Ozzie. Dear reader, he is 12 lbs and had 2 teeth. Even our cat just stands her ground and is all "yeah, ok." Big bark and, literally, no bite. He was terribly abused when we got him. And he's absolutely the sweetest thing. The one tech, literally, jumped up on the table to get away from him. And he didn't even approach her, he just barked. He's a traveler and we're movers. He's been to over 10 vets in different cities. This was the first time anyone had the audacity to muzzle him. There was no need. Huge red flag. (And has we tell this story to our neighbors, we hear "OMG, same thing here!" These are vets and techs who straight up do NOT like animals and do NOT know how to work with them.) So despite that first drama and red flag, we go back. Eddie is 14.5 yrs old and suddenly can't really walk well. We make an appointment and take him in. DURING the appointment he goes from walking in the door to his back legs, literally, no longer working. He couldn't stand, move, or anything. We're in tears. The vet says "Well, that's not the reason you made the appointment, so you'll need to make a new appointment." Uh, no, this was the reason. There's something happening. Welp, dear reader, he passed that weekend. We left this place and went immediately to VEG (the ER vet), who then sent us for an MRI in the middle of the night at a vet ER in Annapolis. The next morning, we got the call that a tumor was, very literally, breaking his back. The vet here gave him gabapentin and kicked us out. WHILE SHE, LITERALLY, WATCHED HIM GO FROM WALKING TO NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE HIS BACK LEGS. What. The. Actual. Fuck. The people here do NOT care about your pets. Not in the slightest. They are rude. They are scared of the animals they claim to "treat." They are the worst. I cannot comprehend how they have good reviews. And yet, everyone we talk to in the neighborhood relays stories like ours. If you love your pet, do NOT take them here. Stay far far away. They are worthless and uncaring. Never in my life of 10+ different vets in different states have we ever encountered such "treatment."

Since I had a primary vet, there was no need for me to return on a regular basis but they left a good impression. Now, I have an elderly dog with a terminal condition and needed a hospital to visit for a non-critical emergency need. I had taken him to another hospital nearby the week prior, and they suggested I make the decision to put him down over the weekend despite the fact that he's eating, drinking, playing and sleeping as normal. They thought his nasal tumor growth had progressed enough to impact his quality of life. What they didn't catch was that his new, swelling over his eye was actually a huge abscess that then erupted two days after getting an injectable antibiotic. Quite frankly, it was disgusting and caught me way off guard but it also became immediately clear that once ruptured my dog's eye visibility resumed (despite a very messy process to recognize that.) To ensure that there wasn't any additional care needed for the abscess site, I set up an appointment here because I refused to go back to the other hospital. Luckily, from the moment I arrived I picked up on good vibes. The vet tech that I met with first had done a great job reviewing all of the notes and health history files I had sent over prior to the appointment so I pretty much only had to just confirmed the accuracy, Dr. Thomas Landes then came in and he was just wonderful. He was friendly and asked thoughtful questions to better understand the current state of affairs. I was appreciative how communicative he was throughout my dog's exam (commenting positively on things like my dog's strong heartbeat) and they proposed a game plan for next steps. They took him back, further took care of the abscess and gave me some instruction on how to manage the care at home. Honestly, it was just so refreshing to have a positive but realistic doctor that had a great understanding on my dog's life stage and was helpful in ensuring that my dog received care as well as maintains a high quality of life as long as possible. But now that I've had a few months to reflect, establish a great relationship with another hospital nearby and consult with my sister (also a vet) I was left feeling so uncomfortable and upset about my experience here this summer. I originally came here because my former vet had begun working here. My dog was diagnosed with nasal cancer earlier in the year and while I was away on a short trip, it appeared as though the tumor looked to have doubled in size just in a matter of days. When I got home, I set up an appointment immediately and was hoping to reconnect with my old vet (who is wonderful.) Unfortunately, although it seemed like he was on the schedule for booking that day, I received a call the morning of the appointment indicating that he was actually out and that I would be seen by another vet. Because the priority for me was that my dog be examined by a medical professional ASAP, I kept the appointment. The tech was very nice and so was the vet, however after a brief exam and being given an antibiotic and steroid (per my sister's suggestion) the vet pretty much told me I needed to make an end of life decision for my dog over the weekend. When I asked if she thought I had enough time to take my dog up to NYC by Wednesday for my sister to also examine him, I was told she couldn't confidently say he'd make it until then. I left with my heart shattered, so confused and conflicted because he was still eating, playing, sleeping well and otherwise behaving "okay" aside from the slow growing mass on his face. As a family, we decided this was not the direction we wanted to go in and I set up an appointment at District Vet at Eastern Market. My dog lived for an additional 5 MONTHS after that appointment. If I were to have just blindly taken her suggestion, I would have missed out on almost half a year of our time together. Additionally, two days later the swelling over his head that appeared rather abruptly ruptured. Turns out it was just an abscess! I'm so confused why this wasn't identified as a possibility considering the rest of the tumor was firm, while the newest inflammation was soft and appeared rapidly within a few days. Thankfully, I was able to have the abcess drained and cared for and my dog was able to enjoy life in the months ahead with palliative care and monthly steroid treatments at District Vet- Eastern Market. I'm so glad I took my dog elsewhere for a follow-up and trusted my gut that it wasn't his time. After a confusing and stressful series of miscommunications around my dog's vaccines (including being told he may have suffered organ damage due to a missed one), I raised concerns during my last visit in December and was told a manager would call me the following business day. That call never came. Months later, when I requested to cancel my membership and provided that feedback again, Nicole responded -- not with accountability or even an apology for the dropped communication -- but by trying to dispute the timeline of my experience. I had replied to their message on the same day it was sent, yet she still claimed I hadn't responded. When I asked directly if she was implying I was mistaken or lying, she never replied at all. That silence was the final confirmation for me: the concern wasn't being taken seriously. I understand mistakes happen -- but when a company positions itself as premium, with a high-touch, membership-based model, I expect better follow-through and communication from leadership. Nicole's handling of this made me feel like I was being gaslit rather than heard. I appreciated Small Door in the past, but this experience -- especially the lack of accountability at the manager level -- has seriously eroded my trust.

Even though that annual membership was purchased on March 7, 2026, the 14th St. location told me that I had to buy a whole new membership because it was non-transferable. The actual patient hasn't changed just the owner, so I'm not sure why I would have to pay for another annual membership when this was just paid for three months ago. I also called the McLean location today and asked if I could bring my puppy in for his monthly flea and tick pill. They told me that they would have it ready for pick up whenever I wanted to come, but I asked if it was possible to pick up from the 14th St. location because it's down the street from my house (about a 30 minute walk). They said yes, so I contacted the 14th St location to make sure they had the medicine in stock and could refill the prescription, and also that they had availability for me to stop by today. She said the medicine was in stock and I could stop by anytime today, so I rearranged my schedule, told my husband to take the car today and walked over with my dog. When I got there, the woman working the front desk told me that I needed some sort of xyz for him to be seen at that location. I had to tell her I had no clue what acronym she kept using and then she proceeded to tell me that because my dog has medical records in Virginia I needed to reestablish new Care for him in DC. I explained that I had called both locations prior to walking 30 minutes to get there, and she just said it was her that I spoke with, so I asked her why she didn't alert me if that prior to telling me to bring him in. She said "Sorry for the inconvenience" but didn't really have an explanation she then proceeded to tell me that I needed to pay in full for a visit/exam with the doctor before they could give me his prescription. Despite the fact it was hugely inconvenient and was going to cost me over $109 just to get his basic prescription that I had already been established and in the system with the same company, just at a different location, I didn't want the trip to be wasted so I asked if he could be seen today. She then told me they were fully booked today, but then told me they had other locations I could check availability with. I asked her "Well, wouldn't I have to pay to establish care with them as well? And wouldn't it be more convenient for me to just take him to McLean to avoid all of these fees and just pick up his prescription?" She was like "Oh ya, that's probably better". In addition to being hugely inconvenient, there was no offer to really rectify the situation. This whole ordeal seems like a hustle when 1. they won't transfer the membership ownership with the dog, AND 2. for every different location I take my dog to in the DMV area I would have to PAY out of pocket to establish new care in that state. Not sure what the point of choosing a company that has multiple locations for convenience if none of the offices share records or can help you when you take your dog to their locations?? Anyway, we walked back home another 30 minutes, and I called the McLean location, only to find out they had never heard of such a policy. This whole experience has been extremely frustrating, so I'll likely find another vet. Worth saying the McClean location was very apologetic and empathetic. The 14th St location acted like everything was out of her hands. And who knows if that's even an actual policy..?
