I have been taking my dogs to Union Vet since I moved to Capitol Hill 20 years ago. They do a great job. My most recent experience was having my Welsh terrier Lily's teeth cleaned yesterday. I was very happy with every aspect of the care. In particular, I appreciated that Dr. Applebee updated me with 2 phone calls during the day that Lily was at the clinic, which included her having anesthesia. So I am so shook because I didn't read any reviews till after I came here. Y'all....I'm pretty damn picky. I grew up with a family full of nurse practitioners and physicians. So there are 2 things I give a damn about when going to a doctor....and I don't see human doctors any differently that animal doctors (vets). 1) bedside manner 2) you've gotta be a solid stick when drawing blood. If either of those two things suck, my usual, very calm, very kind, mellow, very gentle energy will sharpen up. I walked in and it's a teeeeny tiny waiting room. So there's not a lot of room, but my curvy self and tiny doggo fit just fine :) I picked up real quickly on all the queer inclusive insignia. My eyes take note of that stuff. Seeing as I was dressed as the gayest femme lumberjack in the city, my queer ass appreciated that. Now mind you....they ask for a stool sample when coming in...and I swear I had no idea how I was going to get Finch to shit on command ...but I a short walk away and thank goddess my pooch squeezed out the tiniest shit minutes before walking in the door. Praise be! Now, Finch is a service dog. He is not an ESA. He goes to restaurants, museums, the barber shop...with me. Typically he doesn't engage with anyone. But it was really important to me that he felt loved and comfortable and like he was just greeting friends at this clinic. I don't want him to be scared of the vet. So, I let him greet people and wander around the patient room to say hi to whoever walked in. This dog was in JEAVEN because he NEVER gets to interact anywhere we go. And I think it definitely helped his energy. I really, REALLY appreciated the staff here. Every single person--from the staff who checked me in, the folks who clipped his nails(thank you Aaron and Allison for that!), to Dr. Allison Gross who was his doctor ---were so lovely. The Only time I almost sharpened up was when a tech was drawing blood from Finch and...there just isn't any way to say this other than...he was just not very good at the stick. I saw him push in and pull out the need about 3 times before he let Dr. gross do a butterfly stick on his leg. Like I said...I'm only very particular about a few things ...and drawing blood is a big one. However, the tech himself was really kind and so sweet. I hadn't been able to take Finch to the vet last year. I had his full year of Heartworm/flea preventative--so I needed a prescription for his meds. It was a little strange that I got a photo of the hand written script'--i'm used to a typed digital prescription, but that's not a big deal. I attached our receipt from our first visit so you can take a gander at the costs. There's an $87.50 doctor's visit charge that was waived since this was our first time in. But honestly, I don't really qualify this as super expensive. I pretty much expect it for a yearly visit. Anyway, Finch was in heaven being able to actually get pets from people and interact with them and the staff was great. I recommend these folks. read more

The vets here are great. Unfortunately the office staff is not. Dog tested positive for something that required immediate treatment. Despite staff getting the results first thing in the morning, they didn't even call to give me the results. I had to call them to check the status of the test and hound them for a prescription which, according to them, wasn't going to be issued until a full 2 days after they got her test results. Don't risk your pets life with this place. It might look like it would be cheap but it's honestly about the same price as Bond Vet which provides great follow up care. Update: After calling them repeatedly just to get a prescription for my poor pup and getting absolutely nowhere, they called me multiple times after seeing this review. How about instead of calling me to take down the review you give me the prescription that I'm still waiting for! read more

If you care at all about your animal DON'T bring them here!!! I thought that paying twice the amount as other places for my dogs neutering ($490 with microchip) would ensure a great experience, but sadly I was wrong. When I brought my dog home after his surgery, he was whining in pain the whole ride home. Once I got into the house, I realized they LEFT THE CATHETER IN his arm from the surgery. I called Union Vet Clinic and told them... to the response of "oh shit". They said I shouldn't take it out at home and that he should be brought back to the office. (Mind you I live in NW DC and it's over 30 minutes one way.) I check the time and ask if they will still be there in 30 mins which they said they would be. I arrived about 10 minutes before their 8pm closing time. The tech took my dog to remove the catheter, and I asked to speak to the Vet about what happened. I wanted to have my dog checked over once more by the Vet since the Tech's negligence caused me to have to come back. I also had some follow up questions about his medication and about some redness I observed on the area. Being a concerned first time pet mom, I wanted to be certain he was checked after being under anesthesia. On top of this, the front end staff was extremely rude and unprofessional. They told me that the Vet was on the phone and could not come down to assess my pets condition. (Outside due to Covid restrictions) They told me to leave and he would call in 20 minutes. I reminded them that the only reason I was there was due to their mistake, and that I wanted the Vet to look him over before I drove another 30 minutes home. The staff turned all the lights in the business off and locked the door. After calling multiple times and insisting that I speck with a Veterinarian one finally came outside around 8:15pm, (25 minutes after I arrived) I spoke with the Office Manager the next day who offered me a $75 credit "in case I should return for an appointment". NO THANK YOU! I wouldn't put my pet into harms way for $75. Couldn't be more disappointed - not only in the business and unnecessary money/time/energy spent that day, but in the LACK OF COMPASSION the staff at Union Veterinary Clinic had for me or my dog. #dobetter read more

This is a review I need to start by saying that I am clearly a fool for going here for so long. It is not worth being loyal to this vet, as long-term customers are not a priority anyway. Most recently, my dog was sick and I tried to get a last minute appointment. I was told to call at 7 AM the next day to get a same-day appointment. I did. While on the phone the admin kept saying oops, no, it's ok, etc.. and sad I was good for a time. Then one last time she says, I am sorry, please hold. She gets back on the phone and says, yeah, the other person was scheduling at the same time, so you can't have the time I just told you was good. I can charge you an extra 30.00 to drop your dog off and we will fit him in. I declined and will find another vet (probably P St.). Moral: This place will nickel and dime you to death. This is not a unique situation. There are always upsells and recommendations for costly tests. This vet is more than most anyway, and you don't really get what you pay for. On another recent visit we were uphold a vaccine that had two shots. Both my dogs were so lethargic and out fo sorts for days after, we never went back for the second shot. A little research showed these two condo living city dogs were very unlikely to encounter the disease the vaccine was for anyway. There are other vets, including P St. Pet Practice (which I recently discovered) that are much more affordable and personable. In the case one Union Vet, beware of the image they are trying to portray. It will cost you and you will not get what you pay for. read more

It is so hard to find a vet you can trust which we all know. One of the biggest gripe everyone ALWAYS has with vets are their costs. No matter where you go, every single place is expensive! We know this! I truly don't think it's fair to expect anywhere in DC in general to be anything close to affordable BUT quality is the concern here. I have a six pound chiweenie mix who has been seen here multiple times and I have yet to have a bad experience. The staff is kind, they always answer my questions and they truly listen to me when I have concerns. I brought my dog in for a dental cleaning and his teeth look outstanding. I have called them who knows how many times with food questions, every time my dog pukes and so much more. They always work with you to get your dog seen ASAP if needed. This business made an appointment two weeks out to bring my sick dog in. I wanted to know how much I would be charged and got so many strange responses then was told there are 5 different receptionists answering me. They then attacked my lack of proper "vocabulary" to describe his symptoms, and then canceled my appointment within one workday of the actual appointment for simply asking to know my charges previous to being charged. Now my dog will not get the help he needs. It just felt very strange to not be allowed to ask how much I'll be charged. Terrible customer service. My cat is dying of cancer (but I'm in Florida due to covid-19) and I needed to speak with my vet. I've been trying to get a response all week and have not been able to get my vet on the phone. Finally this morning, after crying to the person who answered the phone - I was told a vet would call me back. I waited the whole day by the phone but missed the call by about 15 seconds. There was no call back number, and there is no voicemail system. Now, my cat will just have to suffer until Monday. I've already taken my cat to the emergency vet, and really just needed her primary care vet to give me advice on how to keep her comfortable as she dies. You pay a premium with this vet, I do not know where the money goes - the facilities are not very nice, their communication systems are non-existent, and unless it's 15 minutes after they open or 30 minutes before they close - they do not care about their patients. I was even in there one day to pick up medication a few minutes before they close and the person at the front desk complained to me because they had to answer calls coming in (but hinted that if the call had come in after closing they don't have to). As I've been calling vets in Florida to try to get her into be seen - even though they've never met me or my cat, they care more about me than Union Vet ever has or will. I had friends warn me to not go to this vet because of the poor service - I wish I listened. I went because the location so convenient. Please don't make the same mistake I made, it's worth it for your pets to take them to another vet farther away, that will give you the attention you need in an emergency. read more

Returned him the next day and it turned into a train wreck. Try as I might to get a consult, I was denied. Phoned and left messages for a doc to return my call. Nothing happened for five days, and then no one - docs or staff - would take responsibility. There was a 36-hour period when I seriously thought my dog might die. I've been bringing my little fur-baby, Pippa, here for about two years. We always have a positive experience with the front desk staff, vets, and vet assistant. They even scheduled me in for a an appointment within a day of me calling and are open on Sunday morning! I have an especially anxious little baby who hates when new people touch her. So getting vaccinations and test run is extremely challenging for her. Nonetheless, the vet and his assistant were very calm, understanding of her anxiety, and very gentle with my little one. More than once they have made mistakes with appointment scheduling, and they argue with me about it and tell me that I said things in previous calls that I never said. This place was our go-to while we lived on The Hill around 2015. We moved away, came back...and the place went way downhill. Could never find test results - I had to bring them their own results and quote them from their own notes each time I visited. Chronically misdiagnosed my dog and ordered expensive tests through multiple visits over the same issue for several months. Drove my dog 30 miles away to another vet...and the problem was solved with a month's worth of antibiotics and vitamin C. This place is overwhelmed, understaffed and borderline dangerous to your pet. read more

There is no other vet in DC I would trust to care for our dear, sweet, elderly basset house. We've gone to Union Vet Clinic for the last 7 years, since moving to DC. The entire staff is always so wonderful and Dr. Gross has been our trusted vet the entire time, but if ever Dr. Gross is out, we have always received wonderful care from the other Doctors on staff. I must say, sometimes it is very stressful coming in because of our dog's advanced age and not knowing what is wrong with her. But seeing the wonderful front desk staff at the clinic always makes it easier. Rebecca is always so helpful on the phone and Nesha is so sweet and always asks how our sweet girl is doing, even when I am just there solo to pick up medication. Bryce is so amazing and empathetic whenever we come in with an issue, I can tell he truly cares and he has also stayed late to help me pick up medicine. He constantly goes above and beyond to help us. And Christian the vet tech is always so tender with our sweet old girl! Union Vet Clinic is truly a family, they are incredibly skilled and compassionate and I'd recommend them to anyone he needs expert care for their furry best friends! read more

Union Vet is absolutely awful. I would recommend taking your pets anywhere other than to Union Veterinary Clinic. We have 3 pets -- 2 cats and 1 dog. We'd been customers at Union Vet for years, but it's taken a nosedive and they couldn't care less. The 5-star & 4-star reviews you see here are either years old, or written by the doting family members of current Union Vet employees. Don't be fooled. Upon meeting their terrible front desk staff, you'll immediately wonder if you made the right decision in booking your appointment at this place -- spoiler, yes, you did make the wrong decision. The front desk is rude, wait times are long (long!), parking is non-existant. All of that has actually always been the case, but their doctors used to make up for it. Once Dr. Kats left though, that also changed. Just yesterday morning Union Vet charged me a premium price for a urinalysis--nearly twice as much as other (better) clinics. Nearly 48 hours later, we have no results for our little puppy, and the front desk staff is telling us that the results were sent to the doctor and that we'll just have to wait for a call -- and that it will "probably be tomorrow." That's after they inspected a chipped tooth, confidently told us that it would require surgery, and referred us to offices wanting to charge upwards of $1200 for a tooth-pull. We visited 2 more vets, both laughed at their "expertise". Thank goodness we did, our little girl's tooth fell out just last week -- her mouth is doing great! No $1200 surgery, lol thanks for the advice, Union Vet. Long story short: spend your money elsewhere. These folks charge FAR more than their competitors, and they do not care about you. We've left forever. Our 3 pets are seeing other vets, in better, more comfortable facilities, for a fraction of the cost. I could not give this place a worse review. Please, do yourself a favor: Don't Go To Union Vet EDIT 7.26.2018: Just received a call from Union Vet's manager--note that this is 2 days after the original post, where it had already been close to 48 hours. Our dog has gone for over 3 days without a diagnosis from them, and on this call--instead of providing a diagnosis--they were combative, insisting that they did call (except they didn't have our phone number down correctly, despite us spending money there for years with multiple pets). I switched to this vet for convenience, but really regretting it. The other day I had a "relief" vet and she was not only judgmental but she was not in the least bit warm to my dog. The price for some a osurina dose + exam was $213 and when I checked out they said the follow up (for the second dose) would be the same cost. I was shocked. Later someone called me to explain it was an error and would only be $25. So today I was shocked when they tried to charge me $50. It's a good thing I knew how much the dose was from my last appointment. Nonetheless the front desk staff I interacted with was so rude when I asked if there was a number or email for an office manager. I went as far as to say it had nothing to do with her but I've only had bad experiences there and would like to share. The front desk person gave me a strong eye roll which was completely unacceptable given I was neither rude or exercised. I will be going back to City paws where they are less expensive, very transparent about pricing and they all have nice dispositions. read more

We're seeking a new veterinarian in the area who is willing to see urgent patients quickly. After 25 minutes of waiting, and 17 years of patronage, we finally left with our two dogs in tow, forever. No one at the front desk informed us how long the vet would take or gave us any updates and everything looked utterly chaotic. And they had squeezed in nonemergency visits that pushed all of us back. This is becoming the norm here. We also learned that Dr. Kats was no longer working at the clinic - and she was hands down the reason to go. The current chaos of the clinic is not worth it - there are much better places now to take your dogs where your time is valued (we noticed only cat people were in the overflowing waiting room, perhaps they are willing to wait longer than dog people). read more

Greedy. Non-transparent & unprofessional. My dog was diagnosed with Heartworm, and they REFUSED to give me the test (Microflaria (MF) count) results. I actually paid for TWO Heartworm tests & they STILL wouldn't give me the results. I asked FIVE TIMES...They kept telling me I had to schedule another appointment to get the results. When I finally got angry with them, and told them I was changing vets, they sent me a scan of the results but DELIBERATELY blanked out the actual count data that I requested. Some vet clinics have a reputation for scamming people for Heartworm diagnoses. Union Vet Clinic appears to be one of them. Avoid them. Just Look at the Yelp data: Union Vet Clinic has consistency gone down in ratings over the last year. Too bad I can't leave zero stars. read more

I adopted a rescue and chose this as my vet because it was so close to my house. They also offer waive the initial $70 visit fee for rescues. Big mistake. The initial interaction was not great - the vet tech never introduced himself (I thought he was the vet I had an appt with until the actual vet arrived) and kept forgetting information (ie, he weighed my dog and then when inputting it in the computer said "what did he weigh again?" Luckily I had been paying attention.) When the vet arrived, her bedside manner was awful. She kept asking me how I could have let his ears get so infected - keep in mind I had owned this dog for less than 24 hours, which I tried to explain repeatedly. He had indeed been neglected by his former owners but they acted like I was the one doing the neglecting. They also insisted, based on my dog's eyes, that he was 10 or 11 and that I should get him on a senior dog diet bc he was unlikely to live longer than a year or so. I know that with a rescue dog the age is always up in the air, but having had senior dogs previously I knew this dog wasn't 11. I asked them to look at his (very healthy) teeth to get a better idea and they refused, saying they could tell from the eyes. (Spoiler alert - I later took him to a different, much better vet and without giving them any of this information asked how old they thought the dog was. After looking at everything - including his teeth - they concluded he was probably around 7, which is exactly what I thought.) They also told me he had a heart murmur, which is true. After I declined to see a cardiologist "just in case he needs heart surgery" (I was sure he did not and am right so far) they insisted he needed a variety of senior dog and cardiovascular tests. I didn't think he needed the full scan of senior dog tests but agreed because if something was wrong, I of course wanted to know - better to be on the safe side. His tests came back perfectly healthy though they still sent me a suggestion last week that I take him to their cardiologist just in case. They also took forever to give me his test results and when I called to get his record a few weeks later (to take him to another vet) they sent me the records for another dog. Side note - a few years ago my friend had to put her dog down and they ended up misplacing a portion of the dog's ashes. Like, they gave her what they said were the ashes and then called months later asking when she was going to get the rest of him . She warned me not to take my dog here but they're so close that I hoped it was a one off thing. Clearly it wasn't. I am giving them two stars because they give the "free" vet visit for rescue dogs, but just be prepared for them to tell you your new dog has a host of issues you need to pay for and act like you're a terrible pet owner. ETA: I just remembered that they said his ears were in such bad shape that he would need six months of follow up appointments and medicine to clear it. I put him on the meds they recommended and took him to a different vet for the follow up, about 3 weeks later. His ears were clear (lab tested and proved). I can't help but wonder if the results would have been the same at a follow up at Union. read more

This low rating is not due to the staff. They are fantastic people. I would give a four star for overall experience. The main reason for the rating being so low is cost. On top of a $90 exam fee (x-large dog), basic vaccinations were over $120. I really liked the team, but I now take my dog just outside of DC to a vet who is just as friendly and knowledgeable but at nearly one-third the price. One other complaint, my dog had a small polyp, which the vet said could only be biopsied if we performed surgery under anesthesia. She also suggested my three year old dog had cancer and once they did the surgery they could go on to do chemo and radiation. She suggested doing the surgery right away and while we were at it, a dental cleaning, since he'd already be under. Then she quoted me $1,200 - $1,500. I was terrified, and distraught, since I could not afford the surgery right away. The vet shrugged and said the only other option was wait and see. I took my dog to his new vet, who performed a needle biopsy (Union's vet told me they're totally ineffective, which my new vet explained, they can be, but her lab double tests two separate samples to be more accurate) and for the $40 exam fee and $40 dollar test, found out my dog was cancer free, just polypy. I understand that medical costs for both people and pets are up, but please don't try to scare me into expensive and unnecessary surgery when there's another option. Today, was the D-day for Union Vet with me and my pooch. I have been taking my dog to Union Vet for over 7 years. I used to live within walking distance, but 6 years ago moved about 5 minutes away. I picked up my dog from daycare in NW, and today, the traffic was a NIGHTMARE! I called to tell them I would be late due to the traffic, and the response I received was...well, sir, you will need to pay an additional fee (totaling $100) because I would be late. I said I was calling to let them know, and that I would appreciate it if you would not charge me due to being late because of traffic, something out of my control. Another person then picked up the phone and said..."Sir, we understand the traffic is not within your control, but our schedule is, and you will have to pay the $100 for being late." This was not the first time I experienced rude behavior. In fact, when I called to make the appointment, the person asked for my name/dogs name FOUR times...then asked if I could call back later as they were busy. When I called back, I was put on hold 3 times, booked the appointment, and when I wanted to confirm back the date and time, they hung up on me! I agree with the other post about costs...it seems the only thing on their mind is charging more for whatever they can! You just lost a customer...and I will not recommend my friends to their clinic. I've used Union Vet Clinic since 2007 but recently decided to switch to another vet for my three pets following a series of disappointing events. The most troubling issue has been the inconsistency in service provided by the various doctors that my pets have visited. Initially my pets saw Drs. Gross and Katz, but over the last few years we have seen a number of other vets (at least 4) and only one of those four is still there. Perhaps that is because two of them misdiagnosed my cat's illness. A third vet (Dr. McCurdy?) was AMAZING and I thought that my faith had been restored, but it turned out that that vet was just filling in because of a shortage of vets at Union. I've tried to find Dr. McCurdy since then and know that she was at Friendship at one point, but may have moved out of the area. :( During last year's visit, we saw a fourth vet who had just graduated from vet school and was terrified of my dog (who had been aggressive when approached by another dog in the lobby). I felt badly for this new vet because I could tell she was nervous by the way she was running through a scripted list of suggestions, including that my (underweight) dog needed to lose weight because she had gained a pound since the last visit. In fact, during the prior year's visit, one of the no-longer-there vets had stated (as many vets have) that our dog needed to gain weight at whatever cost. During that visit, the vet tech (a man whose name escapes me and who I adore) had to care for my dog because the vet was too scared to give my dog her vaccinations. In short, I have lost faith in the level of care provided by the vets and Union Vet Clinic's ability to screen and hire competent doctors. The straw that broke this camel's back is the rudeness displayed by the front desk receptionists. Every time I call, I am put on hold, often for lengthy periods of time, and the staff is so rude to me. I have decided that it is time to try something new. I will post again once I have visited a competing clinic, which I have plans to do tomorrow. I hope this is helpful. read more

I have been going to Union Vet since it opened a decade ago. I first found Dr. Julie Giles at Dupont Vet and followed her to Union Vet when it opened. She was an amazing vet (RIP). I've kept going to Union Vet since her passing, but it just isn't the same. The service is fine and the staff is fine, but they have a lot of turnover. For a clinic that I've been going to for a decade and an original client, I don't like feeling like a stranger. I would still give them 4 stars but their prices are skyrocketing. I took my cat in for a checkup and 2 regular vaccinations in 2010. The price: $90. The price for the exact same service today: $145. I wish I made 60% more than I did in 2010! A decade ago this was a 5-star clinic with reasonable prices and a staff I felt was personally invested in my pets. Today, they are an expensive, busy outfit with competent staff who treat you like a stranger. read more

I don't usually post negative reviews but this place has unfortunately gone very downhill over the last few years. My cat went from being "one of the sweetest cats" a Doctor had ever met to being "aggressive and no longer welcome for drop offs" in a year period. Which is quite a turn around - and probably a lie since I have never even heard my cat growl. Mind you I felt pressured to come get her immediately even tho I was in the middle of a move simultaneously combined with the reality that my grandma was dying! Great empathy. I'm now facing another reality of a lost job and my dog recently got tapeworms. Now where I'm from this is generally a routine thing to do at the vet, but since my dog's vet is in KC he gets his annual there. Was willing to fax over his records and everything. Just wanted a diagnosis and the medicine and was even willing to pay the expense of that. Instead they insisted that he needed a full exam! Ridiculous. The only alternative provided (going to the low cost clinic) was not a real alternative for me (I do not have a vehicle). Imagine my surprise when I contact my friend who is married to a vet tech and she informs me that you can just buy dewormers at petsmart. Unbelievable. I get that we live in a very wealthy city and I am one of those wealthier people. But exploiting people for money because they love their pets is the worst kind of crime. I can only imagine what tests they would come up with that my dog needed before they could even give the medicine that you can buy at a grocery store. This is not responsible behavior. I read a lot of sentiments that are the same here - that this is a place that will just add up as many things as possible to stick you with and I kind of agree. In fact, with my cat, they were getting ready to do exploratory surgery on some sort of "bloating" she had before they amputated her tail (she was a stray I found on thanksgiving day). I told them that she was a stray that I had found in a trash can the night before and that I was willing to shell out the 800 bucks for amputation but not the extra 500 for some sort of exploratory surgery. They strongly advised against it, warned she could die. She didn't and even if she did at least I saved her one miserable night in a trash can where she got to cuddle with me.
