Wings were fall off the bone perfection with a tangy Korean BBQ sauce. Let me say the Chicken and Waffles were delicious, sweet and spicy. Waffles were perfect crisp with sugar and syrup and the boneless fried chicken was crispy and spicy with some Hot Honey sauce. The Award Winning Steak was a disappointment. It was loaded with fat and had an inedible line of gristle through the entire cut. Potatoes were good and the duck confit didn't make much sense in the dish (IMO). Overall, I enjoyed my experience here. The menu was interesting, but still approachable. What wasn't the best was the price point. I can't imagine the struggle that the business is in at the moment, but holy smokes, I can't justify spending that kind of money on a dish. The chicken and waffles were ok. The chicken very tasty, but the waffle was grainy. The pear and bacon salad had very little bacon and tiny pieces. Again, for the price, it was a little disappointing. The pork belly app was tasty, but not as the menu described. I was expecting candied, sticky bacon and essentially got a piece of smoked bacon. Delicious, but inaccurate. Atmosphere : FAB! The entrance seating area is so inviting. Great place to grab a drink and head back to a comfy seat to chat while waiting for your table! Lovely woodwork throughout the bar and restaurant as well as the dining room seating was comfortable. We also took a walk to the back patio. Had a wonderful experience here! Our server was Connor and he was great! He was very attentive and kind and made some awesome recommendations. The atmosphere is lively but welcoming, with lovely farmhouse chic style decor. Our food and drinks came out fresh and at perfect temperatures in a timely fashion. For starters, we picked the Burrata Bruschetta and Candied Pork Belly. These were both winners and so delicious. I picked the mixed greens salad as a lighter option and it was great value for your money with a large portion of fresh and crisp ingredients (the pickled onions were a great touch). The chicken pot pie was also tasty and filling with an expertly cooked puff pastry topping. The drinks I tried were the Cranberry & Thyme Gin & Tonic and the Cinnamon Hibiscus Margarita (pictured). They were both creative and well done twists on classic cocktails that really hit the spot. We sat at the bar on a Sunday morning. We ordered coffee right away and it was delivered in a timely fashion by the bartender. Unfortunately, no sweetener/ milk or creamer was offered in accompaniment. No utensils, I had to flag another server down to obtain coffee accompaniments, then to obtain utensils. We ordered Lobster Benny, and the Steak & Eggs dishes. Food took quite awhile to come out. Taste was adequate/ average. Hollandaise sauce was bland on the eggs Benedict, but the eggs were cooked perfectly. Steak came out as requested... medium. Came here on a Friday night with my wife and another couple. The service was good overall, and our drink orders came out in a couple minutes. Food was tasty. The one knock I have was that the entrees came out about 30 minutes after apps, so a decent delay. But all in all it was a good experience and we'd give it another go. read more

I came here just last week, and I was very impressed. After hearing a few of my friends talk about this place, I have been very eager to try it. We came in and we were the first ones through the door since they opened at 4pm I'm guessing due to covid but I'm not sure. Our sodas were served to us in a mason jar which I though was super cute and I loved the idea. We started off with appetizers. My girlfriend got the cheese curds and I got the calamari. She said that the cheese curds were really good. It is served with this applesauce type sauce. My calamari was superrr good. Instead of the original garlic type sauce it's usually served in, union straw served it in a general tso sauce. I wasn't sure how I was going to like it but honestly it was one of the best calamari I have ever had!! For dinner, I got the bolognese. I have never even heard of this plate before, but I was out to eat so I said why not try something new and it seemed very popular. This was by far one of my favorite dishes ever. The flavor was impeccable. Now, whenever I go out I think I'm going to have to order it! My girlfriend got the pork belly burnt ends. She said that she really enjoyed them! They aren't my style so I can't really say much. For dessert, I got the apple crisp mason jar. It wasn't even served in a mason jar. The server said that they were all out. I wasn't too impressed with the overall taste of it. It was very creamy to be apple crisp. They really overdid it on the marshmallow and whipped cream. I wouldn't order it ever again. My girlfriend got the waffle ice cream sandwich. She said hers was just pretty basic as well. The chocolate was overpowering on the dish. It's nothing extraordinary. Next time, I would just skip dessert. However, the service, amazing appetizers and dinner dishes absolutely trump the dessert leaving me to only give this place five stars. We enjoyed a very nice Sunday brunch at Union Straw. The larger front room was noisy but we enjoyed the relatively quieter back room. Our meals were delish....I had chicken and waffles and my husband had the bacon hash with eggs. Both dishes were excellent! We will return on another occasion. Started with cheese curds ($5) and they were terrific. Light, crunchy, and covered in a panko crumb. Though the menu says it's served with a bourbon apple butter and house made hot sauce, our order only came with one sauce, a brown vinegary bbq like sauce, which I mistook for watered down hot sauce. It took some hemming and hawing to get the hot sauce which I was told to be "probably tobasco". It was actually even less flavorless than tobasco. I took a sip from the serving cup in order to actually taste it and all I could taste was vinegar. Ordered a bbq plate combo with ribs and burnt ends. The ribs were tiny but fall off the bone, while the burnt ends weren't really burnt ends but chopped up pork belly smothered in bbq sauce. The coleslaw was super dry but crunchy. The cornbread was also a bit dry and would have been better served with a pat of butter. The beans packed the most flavor and spice. Oniony and spicier than the house made hot sauce. $28, it's not bad if you're really craving bbq but don't expect this to be made by a pit master. read more

I went here with my three kids for Mother's Day brunch. We had reservations for noon and were seated right away. Our waitress was attentive and helpful. My daughter is vegan and had seen a stir-fry dish on their dinner menu that was not offered during brunch, but when I asked if she might be able to get it anyway, both she and the manager went out of their way to make sure she got it. That in itself was worth five stars for me, but the food was fantastic. I ordered scrambled egg whites, bacon, and ham, which also came with breakfast potatoes. I ate almost everything. My daughter and son ordered strawberry shortcake waffles and devoured them, and my vegan daughter had to bring home her stir-fry leftovers because the portion was so large. We also ordered a couple of tropical colada mocktails which were yummy. Even though the restaurant was nearly full and we had to wait a little longer for the stir-fry since they hadn't planned on making something from the dinner menu, we were still out of there in an hour and fifteen minutes. We so wanted to live this place. Our 1st visit the food just wasn't good. So date night again we decided to give it another try. Great patio atmosphere. We were greeted and sat quickly. Our server Joseph was friendly. I ordered the pulled chicken tacos and my wife ordered the Korean BBQ boneless wings. I ordered a large water no ice.... and what came.... large glass with ice. We came to this place at last minute and found that they cannot give us seats due to reservations. But they found a way to put us in the bar area so we can eat our dinner on high stool chairs. The alligator chorizo in the voodoo shrimp is delish. Only issue is the mac & cheese is stove top.... not baked. Unexpected since there is an up charge to top it w/ additional protein. Sorry to say we had an unsatisfactory group meal this week. I had been once before and it was fine! Dinner was meh at best. We had 6 folks. Appetizers: wings ok, chicken nachos really bad, soggy and bland. Meatballs were good. Dinners: Salmon was blah. Pork was dry/under seasoned. Cocktails and fries were the only hit. Waitress was nice. Was a birthday dinner. Spoke to hostess to order the dessert. Had asked for two candles (twins). Waiter brought out a $13 cookie without a single candle. All in all, a great disappointment. The parking is a joke, the nasty couches and stinky pillows in the waiting area will have you sneezing and wheezing in no time but you'll be spending plenty of time on them so suck it up. When you finally do get a table you'll be so thirsty but you'll be lucky if a waiter comes over in 20 minutes or so to give you 4 ounces of piss warm tap water in a dinky cup. 2 hours later you'll get some over priced shit they pass off as a meal but don't worry you'll have plenty to bring home to your dog when you get done waiting another hour for the check. Our first time here; we went for a late lunch on a Saturday, it was not crowded. The positives - The decor is nice, friendly hostess, we got seated right away, the food was flavorful. The service was horrible - our waitress was crass and not professional. As I mentioned, it was not crowded. We ordered drinks that took 15 minutes to arrive - again not crowded. She delivered the drinks to the table and dashed off. Returned 15 minutes later. We placed our food order, she dashes away. She returns 5 minutes later and says she forgot to tell us about the specials, we said we were all set. She goes on to state the specials and asks if we want to change our food orders!! We said no. Another staff member brought the food and we asked for refills. Another staff member brought our refills. We are actively eating our meals, food still covered our plates. The waitress comes over and hands my husband the bill!! Doesn't ask us how our meal is, could she get us anything - just hands my husband the bill - while we are still eating!! We were furious. Cheese choice is good The mediocre: Burger: thin overcooked uninspired patty. Would not get next time. Buffalo fingers: not special. Run of the mill sauce. No celery or carrots. Kind of meh. Hog wings: this is a processed product. The shanks themselves are unremarkable. The House sauce gets high mark honorable mention. Award winning 16oz rib eye. $32 entree the "sides" are 6 baby potatoes and wilted arugula with a few dabs of duck confit. The steak was cooked PERFECTLY! The rub had so much cumin that it was difficult to tolerate. The natural umami flavor was lost in the aggressive seasoning. I asked them to hold the ubiquitous balsamic reduction ( they put this in nearly everything) The bad: The fries. Awful. Limp. Greasy. If you like fries, get a salad. Wow, I loved this place. It is very nice inside and I was a bit surprised to find out it used to be a VFW. The layout matches that a bit but it was light and airy. Our waitress was very good. She gave me recommendations which I always appreciate and she was honest if she hadn't tried something yet. After passing the dish on the way in, I got chicken and waffles. It was spectacular. The chicken was crispy and had a bit of heat. The waffles were a bit crispy as well with maybe sugar crystals? and wonderful syrup. I stuffed myself because I didn't think waffles would reheat well at home. My friend got the taco board which had pork that night. It seemed the perfect size. She ate everything on the plate and ordered dessert as well. I can't recall what it was but she loved it. Some sort of cake with bourbon maybe. I will admit my Negroni Spritz was a bit strong so the details were fuzzy. I liked it so much I bought a gift certificate for a birthday gift and cannot wait for that person to try it. Here's an honest assessment of 2 visits. October Jumbo Chicken Wings ($12)- House Hot Sauce & Blue Cheese. Ordered extra-crispy. Could be the most perfect wings ever had. Sauce had a killer balance of sweet/salt/savory. Texture was spot on - crunchy skin & succulent inside. Duck Grilled cheese ($17) - Duck Confit, Cranberry Bread, Bourbon Apple Butter, Caramelized onions, Blue Cheese Mustard, Fontina cheese. She requested the mustard on the side and quickly declared that it was a mistake. It really punched up the flavor so she put it back in it's rightful place inside the sandwich. Elsie: Didn't dig the cranberry walnut bread. Loved the blue cheese reunited with the duck. Me: One of the best grilled cheeses around and huge reason to keep going back. Kama Jama Chicken Sandwich ($15) - Fried (There's a grilled option for weirdos who fear fried chicken). Cheddar Cheese, Spicy Slaw, Chipolte Ranch Dressing. My 16 year old son didn't put it down until it was gone. His commentary was mainly happy grunts thumbs up gestures. The guy is a fried chicken connoisseur, so we can judge a sandwich's merits by the speed at which it disappears down his gullet. This one gets an A rating. Flatbread ($14) - Fig Jam, Baby Arugula, Prosciutto. Scattered shreds of unlisted cheese, possibly fontina. Crisp base, tender top. Prosciutto balanced by fig spread and tangy sweet of balsamic glaze. Candied Pork Belly ($12)- Secret Dry Rub, Pineapple Habanero Glaze. Had immense potential: Loved the flavor but seemed to lack salt. So meaty & lean you'd think it came from a hog with 6-Pack abs. Arrived on the medium-cooked side. Could really benefit from a fattier strip and a low, long cook before a final, high heat crisping to order 2nd Visit, Dec 2019 Jumbo Chicken Wings ($12) - Forgot to order extra crisp as before. Sauce was still banging but the skin was just ok. Note: always ask for well done wings anywhere you go. Shrimp Po' Boy ($15) - Cajun-Dusted Popcorn Shrimp, Cajun Remoulade, Spicy Pickled Vegetables. It looked really, really nice! My son ingested it before anyone could sample. Refer to Kama Jama Chicken Sandwich review above... The Ragin' Cajun ($21) -Shrimp, Andouille, Mussels, Okra, Roasted Corn. Definitely needed more cayenne kick to be Ragin' but more importantly it needed salt.* But there was still something impressive - all the components were perfectly cooked. Pretty common for restaurants to stew everything together like somebody's ancient bayou granny, yielding shriveled, tough seafood and andouille exhausted of its tenderizing fat. Here the shrimp were still plump and snappy, the sausage juicy with it's flavor shining through and the vegetables just soft enough. Pump up the seasoning and this dish goes from OK to awesome. *Most items at Union Straw are well seasoned though there are some misses. Chicken & Waffles ($18) Honey Hot Sauce, Honey Butter, Bourbon Apple Butter & Bourbon Aged Maple Syrup. Here's an interesting one. The sauces at Union Straw generally kick ass, the Honey Hot Sauce, Honey Butter, Bourbon Apple Butter and Bourbon Aged Maple Syrup are no exceptions. And the waffles are dynamite - yeasty, hearty and a pearl sugar crunch like the best ski resort waffle slope side treats. The problem is the fantastic fried chicken is the only savory foil in the dish - covered in the honey hot sauce it a struggles in the all out sugar assault of everything else. It needs is a succulent gravy or some umami packed sauce to bring the sweetness to equilibrium. With mainly a couple of seasoning hiccups, this is still one of the best restaurants in the region. Let's start out with what I liked: the waffles were good and nicely marinated with maple sauce or syrup of some sort. The sauce to go with the chicken fingers was also good, but of insufficient amount. The ribs and side of cornbread were ok, but nothing special (me and the wife split our entrees). The slaw was quite good, crispy, tasty and not oversauced. My wife, who is a slaw connoisseur, liked it too. The baked beans tasted suspiciously like they were from a can. Whatever recipe was used, it tasted uncannily like B&M Baked Beans. Really great ambience. Nice big bar and the seating area is spacious. Restrooms are clean and well kept. Kitchen/cooking area is open for all to see and very clean. We had a wonderful waiter named Parker B. This guy was one of the best waiters I've had at any restaurant. Awesome job, he was friendly, funny and checked up on us to make sure we were taken care of. The drinks were awesome. I had a black raspberry cobbler and my wife had a guava rita, but they ran out of guava, so it was substituted with passion fruit and wow it was really great! The food... My wife had the Grilled lamb and hers was cooked perfect and seasoned with salt. It came with asparagus which half were burnt, so she only ate half. I got the pulled chicken and the chicken was great, but they saturated it with a mustard sauce and when I say saturated, I mean it was more mustard than chicken. Even if I scraped the mustard sauce off, it was still overwhelming and I couldn't continue. It came with cole slaw and baked beans, but I didn't want baked beans, so I opted for another cole slaw, which was a broccoli cole slaw supposedly. I took one bite of both and they were the most vinegary cole slaws I've ever had. I got the extra cole slaw, because I absolutely love slaw. These weren't cole slaw, I can't explain it. Couple those with the mustard sauce on the chicken and I was done. I was still hungry because I didn't eat much, so I asked for a side of Mac and cheese... It literally tasted like just pasta. The cheese sauce had absolutely no taste. If you put just a bowl of cooked pasta next to it, you couldn't tell the difference. The waiter was awesome and he said they gave me extra mac n cheese in the bowl, but one bite was enough. This was our first time stopping into Union Station. We had high hopes. Drinks were fine, service was very slow but there was plenty of help, just not focused on the tables and customers. Food was mediocre at best. The biggest issue was "food handling". Cooks in the kitchen not wearing gloves, not wearing hats and handling food that was ready to go out to the tables with their bare hands. This included the manager who went in the kitchen, never washed his hands, never put on a hat and was handling food like a couple of the others without gloves. And I am talking about food ready to go out to the tables after it was cooked.
