Exactly What I needed Union Market is exactly what a neighborhood market should be-- I stopped in Saturday and was immediately impressed. I started in the cheese section and I grabbed some Brie and Camembert, then headed to the deli counter where I picked up a me a pesto prosciutto sandwich on a baguette, heated and pressed to perfection. Paired it with Saratoga sparkling water and was great! In the the seafood section I saw shucked oysters on the half shell, flash-frozen and ready to go. Grabbed a half dozen and they were excellent quality. Also picked up a frozen pizza (haven't tried it yet) and noticed they stock prepared soups for easy meals. I have a Whole Foods 2--3 blocks away in the opposite direction--ate there the next day for comparison--but Union Market has everything I need at better convenience and arguably better quality for the essentials. Whether you're looking for artisan cheese, quality deli sandwiches, fresh seafood, or just solid prepared options, you'll find it here. Highly recommend for East Village. In my immortal journey to find the best grocery store chicken, next up is Union Market. I was hesitant to review it because there are only 6 locations all in New York City, but my comments were flooded with it. It came in at $14.53 which is above market for a typical rotisserie chicken, so my expectations were high. Honestly, the breast was just a little chewy. Still edible and not undercooked (I don't think), but just chewy. Idk how to explain it. Sometimes the English language just lets me down with lack of descriptors. The leg on the other hand was elite, and the skin was BANGIN. This was a tough one to judge. I slapped a 7.4 on it. It felt good. I think I need to take responsibility for this though, as it was my first time reviewing a Tissi under the lights. Normally I just go at lunch, and I think that may factor in. To be clear, we are not NYC residents. We visit, and stay close to the market. i have read some of the whiney reviews of this market and laughed. We live in a semi-rural area in another state. Our environment is a food and culinary wasteland. Organic food is viewed with suspicion. Croissants, when available, are frozen and months old. Cheese comes in little cellophane packages. Bread, is white bread. Those of you who shop in the Aladdin's cave that is Union Market, have no idea how foodily lucky you are to have this wonderful establishment available to you. It's a nice market for being in the center of so many little bustling restaurants that make you want to skip grocery shopping. I wish Union Marcket had more than 5 in Manhattan. This LES location is the only one here in the city.....I understood Cashiers aren't nice but I've noticed it's depend on the day. I also had bad experiences here. (Rude, unfriendly, bad mood etc...) like everyone else wrote the same things about cashiers aren't nice...... They have good products and I like to support esp this is the only one location in Manhattan. They have delicious pastries from SOHO & this supermarket is giving free drink if we purchased. Variety of options, coffee and high quality teas and milks. I def come back again. No places to eat inside... the closest one is on E Houston st. there's a bench. This is my favorite grocery store in the neighborhood. It's clean, it has the best produce and the staff is always friendly and helpful.

Oooweee I wish this grocery store was open when I lived in the area. It's so organized and pretty, and fits a huge selection in a relatively small space. Even with this, the aisles aren't tight and cramped, and it's so brightly lit inside that it's a pleasure to meander! They've got a fruit section in the front, followed by all the nuts, meats, cereals, spices, cheeses, and whatever else you could want - but definitely at a premium price. Think Whole Foods, but boutique version. The fruit looked very fresh, not limp! But if you don't want to pay so much for such basic items like all the hipsters frequenting Union Market, I'd skip and go to another market nearby. Being the sample whore that I am, I absolutely loved the cheese, jam, olive, garlic, and soup samples they offer. This makes it so fun to walk around and explore. If Costco isn't accessible, this will do! They do offer a free coffee with an oatmeal purchase in the mornings, too! Will definitely be keeping this place in mind if I need to do some grocery shopping in the area, but only for items I can't find elsewhere for cheaper, because I be living that broke grad student life. read more

*rotisserie chicken review* Picked up a whole rotisserie chicken here since it was a little more convenient than Whole Foods, location wise. I didn't expect this market to offer the adobo flavor, which is pretty unique and a very pleasant surprise! It costed over $4/lb, totaling approximately $13 with tax. That's about several bucks more expensive than Whole Foods, but I'd say it's worth it! The chicken was super fragrant, juicy, fresh and delicious. Seasoned perfectly. Would recommend! read more

From the outside the place look small but they packed a tons of items into this new market just off of Ave A and Houston. My GF and I found cashew nut milk and many other non-cow milk options. They also sell Steve's Key Lime Pie! Note: The isles are narrow and the place feels crowded with only a couple of shoppers. BUYER BEWARE Bought this on 3/6/20 at Union Market on Avenue A and Houston Street . I cut this in half to eat, took one bite and threw that half out because the texture was not like an apple. The half you see here is 4 days after it was sliced on 3/20/20. If I push on this half it has a foam like feel. I don't know what this is, but it isn't an apple. Apples start rotting from the time they are picked. This is barely dehydrating. In fact, there is little to no moisture in it and it just bounces back into shape. These objects were priced at $2.99 a pound and this one (1) object cost $2.99. This did not weigh a pound, so I think Union Market's scale is not calibrated correctly. read more

UPDATE. The guy handling the raw meat and fish was only wearing one glove, one hand was just out. And the one glove he did have he was using to handle all the raw meat and fish. Plus he was the only person in the store not wearing a mask. And he unpackaged some meat that was returned and un-refrigerated, and added to the refrigerated meat. I told the manager and she didn't nothing whilst another three people were served. I honestly think this is just negligent. Every other time I open their coffee bags, the package tears because the seal is too strong. I wrote customer service about it and was told that no one else had complained. I myself have raised the issue with employees there at least three times. Good coffee, not inexpensive, but I am not happy about their response. In his defense, he was engaged in roll toasting, a task he need not be present for...BUT not even a peep from the guy..like, I'll be right with you.  Then I made the mistake of asking the floor staff for help. A bit pricey for a grocer, but they have a wonderful grab-n-go breakfast deal. A free 12oz coffee with purchase of pastry or hot oatmeal! The oatmeal looked fresh, and had a little bar with 3 toppings to add in. The pastries looked like French patisserie quality, but we only tried the donut. Large, covered in chocolate and cinnamon, and delicious! For only $3, a gourmet donut and coffee is quite a deal. A great little market located down the street from Katz's Deli in the lower east side. I stopped here early on a weekday morning, looking for something healthy to eat for breakfast. They have tons of great items here- lots of produce, meat, cheeses, pantry items, deli items, and a TON of local goods- which is just what I was looking for. I found a black currant & apple juice from a local NYC company & a coconut yogurt with mango and passion fruit. That was my breakfast before my flight back home and it hit the spot. The oatmeal was best at one point! Really terrible now! It has no flavor. Also, the delicious oatmeal was so good that I was willing to put up with the nasty attitudes of the women working up front weekday mornings. They were chatty Kathys and always made it seem like they were doing you a favor. I would never spend another dime here, or more like $75 as it is one of the most expensive groceries out there. Hey, it's more expensive than Whole Foods, and that's saying something. But Avenue A is no stranger to crazy expensive grocery stores (note: Gracefully). Really, I only go here when I'm lazy and don't want to stop at Trader Joe's or WFs. The store is super clean, has fresh produce, almost every delicious thing you could think of, free samples of cheeses and olives and a wide selection of fish and humanely raised meat. My review is actually because they now carry my most favourite ice cream and now they marketing it as Frozen Yogurt. OMG, this place is my lunch savior. Whenever I'm feeling uninspired for lunch, I head over to Union Market. They've got an awesome assortment of fresh fruits, veggies, snacks, cheese, everything! It's a bit upscale (in quality and price), however, the deli items are pretty affordable. Great selection of salads, sandwiches, soups, deserts, etc. You can't go wrong. They also have a huge selection of "healthy" snack foods. If you're particular about what you put in your mouth (unlike me), you'll love this place. Customer service is not what it used to be at this location. Station attendants are dismissive if not outright rude. This is the third time I've come in for oatmeal and been told there is none even though the sign outside advertises hot oatmeal. First the claim was that it wasn't ready until 8:30 even though the store opens at 8 but when I showed up at 9, there wasn't any oatmeal either. All I found was a store clerk who seemed annoyed that I asked her for it. If you charge a premium on goods, as this store does, your stations should be ready to go when you open the store and the people who work there shouldn't seem annoyed that you showed up to shop. read more

This grocery store has the nicest, most cheerful employees in NYC. As a bonus, they also stock some hilariously strange fruits. I almost think it's some kind of internal department goal to sneak in one fantastically exotic fruit in their produce every season. Buddhas' hand fruits and Kiwanos have both made appearances. I love coming here on my way to the 2nd Avenue station! Although the market is a bit "cramped," it is a nice and clean market. It kinda reminds me of Whole Foods and some of Trader Joe's as well. A lot of organic and gluten free products. They also have a whole range of cheese, an olive bar, bakeries, cooked food, sushi, soups, salads, and so much more. I like how organized their produce is and the meats look nice! I like that they have pre marinated salmon and other meats but was slightly disappointment with their beef stirfry. They also have pre made foods that are microwave ready. I still need to try their quiche! I will definitely come back. read more
