Still, there are others who can be very curt with the residents. When I visited my parent there, I witnessed some of this first-hand. I worried that if the aides behaved that way when I was there, how might they behave when I was not. My parent was not the easiest of residents. Could be very impatient and demanding. On some occasions though, particularly when they needed to use the bathroom, an aide may not arrive for 15-20 minutes. Often I assisted my parent before an accident occurred. I believe that part of the problem is that the staff is small, a situation made worse by the COVID19 virus, which saw many on staff need to take time off. Even before this, however, there were too many residents for each aide. I also suspect that the pay is low, as there is so much turnover. One final note: their response to the COVID19 virus was exemplary. Residents were confined to their rooms before other facilities in the area did so. My parent was tested twice for the virus (negative both times). Families were kept up to date by several letters from the president of MaristHill. All in all, I believe that my parent was fairly well-taken care of, given the ratio of staff to residents. My advice, though, is to tour several facilities before choosing one, and try to talk to the families of residents if at all possible. This can be difficult on a tour of the facility, but possible. Also, read up on the Massachusetts ratings for nursing homes. They can be found online. Good luck!

Michelle, the…read morenurse in charge of my geographic area, interpreted my disclosure that in my living will and advance directive, I have a long standing provision for "death with dignity...dnr, dni etc." I am relatively young but I had to make decisions for my parents so now I have my wishes in writing. This stupid and/or religiously perverse nurse took this as a potential suicide so a few days later at 4 am (!), four Waltham police broke into my home on something called a Section 12 which allows police to break in if an attempted suicide is indicated. In no way, was I suicidal. I was immersed in three spine construction surgeries and had my Will etc. in order. I mentioned it to her in case something happened. I had to call my PCP at 4 am. who knew me for 28 years to talk her and the police down. All Waltham police officers (4) who showed up were hot to trot and juiced up to take me in. This was unconscionable. Separately, Michelle was told by me, I probably had a UTI. I said I had a staph UTI previously but the daft Michelle said I non detectable by another person body odor and to buy expensive Lume. I did so but immediately after pressing purchase on Amazon, I thought better, and just called an ambulance (not yet able to drive) and went to NWH where I was diagnosed, as I thought, with a UTI (urinary tract infection). I fired Michelle and this agency. Now, I am suing her, the organization, and the Waltham Police. Imagine if I wasn't with it enough to self-advocate. Does she get a commission for sending people to a mental health institution? Stupidly wrong diagnosis? I hope I get her fired.

Before discharge, I was scheduled to be seen weekly by a visiting nurse from Partners. The same (outstanding) nurse which scheduled times to meet with me on Tuesday's, unfortunately, just relocated. The following week, someone from Partners arrived unannounced at my home. When my wife called me to let me know, I called and spoke with the "Clinical Manager" and explained that the previous nurse came on Tuesday and we generally worked on a time to meet. With no explanation, Solomon told me that they had changed my day to Monday. Further, I was told they can tell me the day they are coming, but not a time. When asked if arranging a mutually convenient time to meet was asking too much since I work, I was then told I needed to be home bound to receive their services. I also called the "Clinical Director" who conveniently kicked the can back down to the first person I spoke with. I want to be understanding of their regulations: if, for insurance purposes, you have to be "home-bound" then why was I admitted for services before? And why was this only mentioned when I expressed concern that a patient is expected to wait compliantly until their visiting nurse arrives? I'm a stage 4 cancer patient who was discharged from Partners Healthcare at Home because, thank God, I'm still actively working (but need weekly picc line dressing changes and blood work).

Joan in particular went above and beyond in helping us navigate different options, applying for financial aid, etc. I was struck by how she knew each of the different family members she met by name and how she repeatedly advocated on our behalf to get certain accommodations made that mattered to my grandmother. Finally, her clarity in laying out next steps and who should be doing what was much appreciated during a emotionally taxing time. I could not recommend her more, and would hope that everyone is lucky enough to have a social worker like her.

I have limited support and so I relied on Abundant, usually Tim was the escort assigned. He understands that the timing of discharge is never predictable, there may be delays -he's accommodating to last minute changes. Last time after surgery I didn't know if I'd be discharged directly home or to a rehab facility, the hospital wouldn't tell me in advance. We had several phone conversations over a period of days and Tim was very patient and understanding about the constant change in directions from the hospital. Always pleasant to deal with. I will definitely use them again in the future.

I needed someone to escort me home from outpatient surgery and was really in a jam: I didn't have…read moreany local friends or family whom I could ask to take off half a day, deal with parking, driving into the city, deal with hospital delays, etc., and the hospital wouldn't let me leave in an Uber/Lyft. It was looking like my outpatient surgery (scheduled three months before) would need to be rescheduled simply because I didn't have a ride home. For someone mentally preparing for scheduled surgery, this was very stressful. Luckily someone on administrative staff put me in touch with Tim at Abundant HHC, who was able to pick me up the following day (less than a day's notice... above and beyond!). Abundant's services passed the "hospital test" because they will not only drive you home but also help you in to your home/apartment. Given my situation (finding a medical escort who could accommodate my needs, or rescheduling my appointment), I found Abundant's charges very reasonable. Tim promised to be available at my scheduled discharge time (1pm) and was still available for my actual discharge (2.5 hours later) when surgery got delayed.
