I've had both fun and disappointing times at Underground SF. I used to go every now and then on Saturday night for the gay party called "Drunk and Horny". I had a horrible time the first couple of times I went (it gets really crowded in there, so if you're in the mood for that it can be atrocious). But then I went again more recently and had a decent time. As pointed out by Brandon C, you could sometimes wish for more eye-candy, but the crowd is fun and the dancing can be good after a few drinks. It can get a little raunchy on the dance floor. And if you're cute or give the googly eye to the doorman you might get invited to the after party (to which I haven't been, so I can't comment on that). 3-1/2 stars. read more

I used to come to this spot on Tuesdays a few years ago for Drum & Bass and jungle and after being out of the city for a while was very pleasantly surprised to find it's still going. Better yet, it sounds really good now (even though I liked the night, there were sound problems back in the day). All the DJs had proper selections and one guy was actually spinning records (yes, vinyl ones)! Not as packed as it was years ago,but there's almost no Drum & Bass in SF anymore, so for me this was like an oasis in the desert. This is a warning to all the ladies out there who might be looking for a place to dance. I made the mistake of coming here on a Saturday "Drunk and Horny" night - purportedly the biggest gay party in town - with four gals and two gays. I got pretty much what I expected: sweaty men without shirts (and, in some cases, pants) rubbing up against each other on the overly-crowded dance floor. I went here with a friend Saturday night for The Drunk and Horny Party. Let me tell you someone should have called the Fire Marshall. All of Castro was in that one tiny space.We were able to make it to the front of the bar after much grabbing and rubbing. Then it took the bartenders a good 10 minutes to get us a drink although we were right there. The crowed was so cute it wasn't cute anymore. It was so pretty even I couldn't stand it anymore. This is one place were they should have a crowed control and not let in more people than they accommodate. My friend and I stood near the front of the bar finished our drinks and were out with in 5 minutes. I don't think I will go back there again. read more

First of all. This place should not be considered a "Gay Bar" It does have a gay night on Saturday nights and also one of their monthly parties but the rest is various themes. The themed parties are definitely the strength of this place. It totally depends on the party as to how many and what kind of people will be there. They do also have weekly clubs like the Tuesday night Drum and Bass which is always good. They have a Dub Step party once a month which is pretty good. It's basically like drum and bass and the crowd is cool. The best thing about the place is a monthly party called "Die, Die, my Darling" which is the name of a Misfits song. As you can guess it's mainly horror punk and death rock, 1 dollar drinks that look like you're drinking blood, and Blood Wrestling!! That's right. Not mud wrestling. Blood Wrestling!!! Which is pretty much unprecedented as far as I know and for a $5 cover charge it's WELL worth it. Also I'm in agreement with the other reviewers about the bathroom setup. Being a guy, it's not too bad because the door is over in the corner of the dance floor, but for the girls their door is right in the middle so they have to wait right in the middle of the dance floor to go to the bathroom. God I love this place! Where does one go on a weeknight to enjoy some reggae, hip hop, mellow jams?? Here!! I've always stumbled into this place late...un-planned...very spur of the moment but I always have a kick ass time. The weeknights I've gone on have not been super crowded but the crowd is a crazy good mix of super mellow people who just want to enjoy the good vibes and dance/drink/smoke/socialize. Just my style. I had a blast at "cockfight" last night. It was super crowded, the guys were hella hot - the hipster queers type. The music was fantastic, lots of little boots, robyn, and other pop gems. I met a 70 year old queer guy who loves to dance, was really rad and had lots of cool stories to tell. So dirty it's good. Cip the owner/bartender is a rock star behind the bar. Music is functional house, with a hot and sweaty dance floor just like I like it. this places spells t-r-o-u-b-l-e everytime i go. it starts out tame, then everyone is literally drunk & horny, or pees in their pants from too much sTeLLa. Saturdays are the best for Drunk & Horny. The most random things happen in the back patio where cigarettes come in a far second from what gets really smoked back there. Been here for three separate events (host and day listed): Run The Length of Your Wildness Monday, Shelter Tuesday, MNMLFUN Friday. Staff is salty but capable, and the house music you'll hear is fantastic (and free for all the events I attended). Dance floor is small, but I've never felt crowded as most of the people seem to stick by the bar and lounge area. Check this spot out if you just wanna groove EDM-style without all of the ratchety stuff you will likely encounter at a larger venue. read more

So, I have only been to Underground SF for the "Drunk and Horny" soiree they host the last Saturday of Month...or is it the second and fourth Saturdays?...or is every other Thursday when the moon is full? Who knows. Anyway, the first time I went it was a blast. Good music, HOT boys and crowded in the good way. Drinks are on the strong side - to say the least. The only downside was that the line for the bathroom is basically on the dance floor. No very convenient for the dancers or the people in line. On a side note, is anyone else afraid that those big rotating cubes are going to fall on somebody? The second time I went, even more fun. More of a crowd, HOTTER boys, better music..blah,blah,blah Then, as with all good things, word seemed to get out. When I say get out, I mean that they must have put up a billboard in Fremont. (No offense to those people in Fremont - what am I saying? They don't have computers in Fremont so no one is going to read this anyway :) ) The last few times I went it was TOO CROWDED. Where the hell is the Fire Marshall? I mean you couldn't walk...literally. I waited 30 minutes - 30 MINUTES! - for drinks. Talk about a buzz kill. Strangely enough, I still managed to have a good time. Haven't been back in a while. Maybe I'll check it out again, but next time I'm wearing an asbestos suit in case the place catches fire. I hate paying covers. Even $5. I went for Gemini Disco night with my buddies from work. (They really wanted to go dancing.) There was a real variety of people, which is important to me. All 70's music is too much for me (as opposed to 80's, which is never too much), and the dance floor is directly against the bathroom, which is sort of gross. Went last night for Drunk and Horny, the Sat night party (now every week). It was a bit rainy and is the season of parties after all, but the crowd was jumping by 11 and was a great mix of guys (mostly 20s/early 30s). The music was great (mostly vintage hits) and there was a nice energy and relatively friendly crowd. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. The drinks are nice 'n strong! read more

I've been here once. We went here around midnight and the place was empty, we single handedly tripled the occupants when we walked in the door. The beer was cold and I really enjoyed the music (top 40/ hip hop). I'll come back eventually to get a better idea of the scene. read more

I give you four, just because I think that the drinks are overpriced, I dont like anything over four, it requires me to get more than a thirty out to drink, yes a thirty. I like that i trip either on the stairs to the smoking area or to the dance floor or on someones feet. I dont know why. I also like that it is in a small space, and yet I dont feel claustrophobic like i do in bar which is a big space. I go only for Drunk and horny and yet find that people are neither, or the fact that I dont register when people check me out, which I dont, can I get some ass grab people? I will give you the evil eye if I dont like you but I still appreciate the ass grab. mmm ass grab. I had no friggin clue this place existed eventhough its literally, right around the corner. Ill say this. It gets four stars for the time warp. I go here to support my friend III (pronounced Three) cuz he does fucking dope visuals for trance music. Granted, his visuals and many beer make trance tolerable. And thats the time warp. I was never a raver, but i made the beats and crap rolled up DJ's would spin. But dude, this was like 1994, before i had ever heard of dark drum and bass, which is the only electronic shit ill listen to. The inside is pretty well cut up, and has a pretty sweet, but creepy patio. Kinda looks like the patio Corbin Bernsen and the snakes get you cornered in, in your dream. Funny story, there was this party in Baltimore, B'More as the kids call it, and this kid is hard trippin in X, and ...who the fuck am i kidding. Nothing about Ravers is funny. Beer and drinks are cheaper than strippers from Zona Roja, and smell just as strong. read more

I went here the other week for drift (ladies house music club every third Thursday $5 cover). I had only been once before, 2 yrs ago, right after I moved to sf. I think it was during drunk and horny. It was totally crowded so crowded I couldn't move, and I left approx 5 min later. so coming back now, it seemed like a whole new place. Parking is horrible around here. That is the worst drawback. Other than that, the club is a small but comfy space...bar in front, a lil dance floor at back, slightly elevated dj booth at the side. The sound system is better than the transfer, where that club nite had moved from. This is definitely not a fancy club, but I like that type anyway. Oh, and water was only $2!! CHEAP!! Oh and the other bad thing was although it wasn't packed, the club was HOT. I was wearing a skirt and tank top but was still dying of heat (hence the water). Don't come wearing a lot of clothing. The coat check was charging a couple of dollars but the only thing I could see where the coat check sign was, was a bench with people's jackets thrown onto it. I wouldn't pay for that. I know a lot of different club nites are moving themselves over to this venue, so you should be able to have a good time. read more
