Whole Truth Lunchroom has a great mission, and the food definitely lived up to the experience…read more Everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. The fried chicken was crispy and fried hard just the way I like it, with plenty of flavor in every bite. The greens were seasoned perfectly, and the yams were sweet with a great texture--not too hard and not too soft. I visited on a hot summer day, and the restaurant can get pretty loud and a little stuffy when it's busy. Thankfully, they had fans placed throughout the space, which made it much more comfortable. Overall, I enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. If you're looking for good soul food and want to support a place with a meaningful mission, Whole Truth Lunchroom is worth a visit. I'd definitely go back.

A ministry of the church next door, Wilson's Whole Truth Lunchroom is a hidden gem. Located a few…read moreblocks from downtown and run by dedicated volunteers, this is an old school cafeteria with the type of food you'd expect from Southern church ladies. Dishes vary from day to day but the fried chicken, baked chicken, and fried pork chops are staples. Plates come with two sides and you can see from the photo why the blackeyed peas are so good (spoiler alert - it's bacon, lots of bacon). Collards are also delicious and the yams are mildly sweet without being cloying. The banana pudding is gloriously warm and the meringue is fluffy. The pudding is a touch too sweet and I could have done with more bananas but it was large enough to share. The staff is genuinely happy to see you and are happy to talk about their work, if you like. The room is a bit bare bones and the bathrooms are rudimentary and cramped but everything works. There is parking directly in front of the restaurant. Thanksgiving take-out is available for pre-order (see photo). I have a strong feeling you won't go wrong with any of the choices.

I remembered that I'd heard about a new soul food restaurant opening in the White Oak area and…read moredecided to give it a try. While the location is great, the business doesn't stand out well enough to attract those that may not be looking for it. I parked into the back and entered the back door. While they sell soul food, the vibes feel super Jamaican. Black paint with green and yellow accents. Fairly large and very clean dining area. The cashier didn't really greet me when I walked up. She wasn't rude, but she wasn't friendly or welcoming. She did complement my shirt. Her non-verbal cues made me feel rushed. I had to ask her if they were sold out of anything. That information was not offered. I also had to ask her the price. I ended up ordering the lamb chops plate that came with rice, and two side. I opted for the collards and mac n cheese. It took maybe 5-8 minutes for my plate to come out. 3 other people came in, ordered and left before I did. I think it was because theybhad to grill the lamb chops. Visually the food looked delicious. Very generous serving of everything. However, the collards were the most disappointing collards I've ever had. They didn't taste bad. They just weren't seasoned AT ALL!! they just tasted like a collard with pepper flakes. The rice was just plain and Not seasoned. The mac n cheese was pretty good. They need to season the pasta a bit more and use a more flavorful cheese. The star was the lamb chops. They were a good size, seasoned extremely well, tender, and grilled to perfection! On top of that they gave me 4. They're They're the reason I'm giving 4 stars. I washed all of that down with a slice of their pineapple cake. It tasted like box cake with canned crushed pineapple on top. But it was delicious. I'd go back just for the lamb chops and cake. At $40 though, i won't go back too often. I hope the other sides are much better though!!

So glad Taste Da Vibez is finally in Garner! Let me just say--there are so many options that I…read morealready know I'll be back. On my first visit, I ordered the hamburger steak with rice, along with mac and cheese and green beans for my sides. Everything was good and full of flavor. The sides definitely gave classic comfort, out-the-box/canned vibes--but still seasoned well and satisfying. Most importantly, it's refreshing to have something in Garner that isn't just another traditional fast-food spot. The service was great and the staff was friendly and welcoming. Looking forward to coming back and trying more off the menu!

Super friendly service and yummy soul food!…read more I saw a commercial for Nana Morrison's on tv and had never heard of it before. But as a person always in search for some good ol' crispy fried chicken, I had to check it out. The chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Each side was flavorful and plentiful. I saw a review about their Mac and cheese not being flavorful enough but I thought it was great. I also really liked their fried okra. Reminds me of a place I love in Texas. Oh and their collard greens are jam packed with flavor. I've had collard greens before elsewhere and didn't get the hype but now that I've had Nana Morrison's collard greens, I can say I'm hooked! Such a nice find. Located right near Bonefish grill. You have to give it a try!

The restaurant itself is a pretty large…read moreestablishment with plenty of seating inside, plus a covered outdoor area that looks like it has garage-style doors they can open up when the weather is nice. Definitely a cool setup! I went around lunchtime and there was no wait at all to order. I decided on the fried pork chop, which I didn't realize was a made-to-order meal. I expected a little bit of a wait because of that, but I was honestly shocked when it took about 25 minutes to get my food. My friend had already finished her smothered chicken by the time mine came out Thankfully, her chicken was VERY good because I definitely stole a few bites while I waited! As far as my meal, I think next time I'd order something that's already cooked and ready to go and probably switch up my sides. The mac and cheese and yams weren't quite as good as I was hoping for, and the cornbread muffins were pretty dry and probably my least favorite part of the meal. Now the sweet tea?? SWWWWWWWEEEEET! They definitely understood the assignment on the Southern sweet tea! Overall, I'd give Nana Morrison's another try. There were enough things on the menu that looked good, and after tasting my friend's smothered chicken, I know there are definitely some winners. Next time I'm skipping the made-to-order wait and trying a different combination of sides!
