Glad we ate in; I shudder to think what it would've been like if we got it to go. I would go back for the onion rings, but that's about it. Bare but clean ambiance. We should have walked out when saw glass door that was so dirty with finger prints and everything else u hardly could see inside. Saw a few takeout orders come in and out so we reluctantly then Ordered food at counter to then be told after sitting down they were out of what I ordered so I had to order something different. Sat down at table which was so sticky my forearms stuck to it, napkin holder on table was so dusty my finger left mark when drug it across it. Place looked like it had never been cleaned or updated in years. Lights above had bugs galore in lightcover, floors/baseboards dirty, fans above on their last leg/blades. Windows also needed cleaning. By then I still wanted to walk out but I needed to see what the food was like. Trying to give benefit of doubt. Service very slow, looked short staffed. Hoping they washed hands at some point no gloves used with server taking orders, collecting money and touching food/cooking in plain view. When food arrived it looked ok until I tasted the coleslaw it was very bad, looked discolored and tasted old needless to say didn't eat it after one bite, my husband spit his out, then came the fried fish, I wasn't impressed no flavor parts of fish was just batter no meat, also the batter didn't stay on onion rings so as soon as u picked them up batter would fall off onion, Hush puppies tasted old not fresh, definitely frozen great value brand or worse. Didn't finish our meal and that's not like my husband he always finishes. Everything tasted same probably fried all in same grease. Still can't believe we stayed and (ate what we could)of the food. That decision paid off when we ended up at El Patio in Zwolle. The restaurant was a nice surprise. The decor had a festive Mexican feel with colorful streamers, flags, and bright colors. Everything was neatly painted, clean, and cool, which was a welcome retreat from the oppressive summer heat outside. We arrived in the early afternoon, so we missed whatever lunch crowd might have been there. The first thing they bring out is a basket of hot tortilla chips. They were fresh and tasted like they had just come out of the fryer. They offer guacamole and other extras, but don't overlook the homemade salsa. It's cooked, served chilled, not too spicy, and not overloaded with cilantro. Really good. The pineapple margaritas were another highlight. They came in heavy crockery mugs that kept them ice cold. They were so good we bought a pair of the mugs to take home as souvenirs from our little road trip. The funny thing is, after the hour drive home, those mugs were still cool to the touch. They really hold the cold. We both ordered the Speedy Gonzalez. The enchilada came covered in a rich mole-based chili sauce, and the plate included a hard-shell taco plus your choice of rice or beans. We chose both. The refried beans were flavorful, the Spanish rice was light and fluffy, and the taco was excellent. The beef was just a little salty for our taste, but the Monterey Jack cheese was a nice touch and everything came together well. We finished with sopapillas, which came out hot, covered with cinnamon and sugar, with honey on the side. They were delicious. Our only disappointment? No coffee. Those warm sopapillas were begging for a cup of coffee afterward. That's a small complaint, though. Great service, great chips, homemade salsa, excellent margaritas, good food, and even a souvenir to remember the trip by. El Patio turned an unexpected change of plans into a very enjoyable afternoon.
