Tender brisket with good bark and smoke ring. Ice cold potato salad. Great dinner. Planning to return very soon.

Dairy Mart is nothing that will catch your eye from the road. In fact, you might drive on by thinking it's a crummy greasy spoon. You'd be wrong. Inside is nothing remarkable either, save for a couple of old arcade games and some tears in the aging vinyl seats which add to your reticence of eating there at all. So, if ambiance is important to you, you will be disappointed - but remember, this is tiny-town-east-Texas. Tiny as in the sign coming into town reads "Population 207". Do yourself a big favor and eat there. I've been in Austin for 12 years looking for my favorite bacon cheeseburger, and hear me on this: if Dairy Mart could open shop in Austin, it would immediately become wildly successful. Mighty Fine would have mighty huge problems. Moonies would be known as "their prices are over the moon." Wally's would be walloped. Huts would go nuts. Big Daddy's wouldn't compete. Only Hil-Bert's would be able to compete on price/portion/taste. The portions of food are more than generous, and add this to the very reasonable prices and you have a great deal. Case in point: huge burgers (the patties are thick and are truthfully larger than the buns which are not small), fresh French fries which did not come out of a frozen box, for $7. $7!!!!!!! It was about 1.5 lbs of food, and delicious! I am ruined for bacon cheeseburgers now. No longer will I even try to look in Austin. Imagine that much food, for 2 people (drinking water), and the tab was under $16 including tax. We ate there 4 days in a row, and it was consistently good. My fishing partner had a shake, and loved it. I asked 2 people what they were eating because their plates looked so good, and heard the same from them: the food is great. One of them was eating what looked like a chimichanga, and the other was eating what looked to be an oriental chicken dish. The wait staff consisted of 2 very sweet and attentive ladies. The place is managed by a personable lady who was usually there. There's a place to tip the cook by the register - do it, they deserve it. All in all, this place is an pleasant little gem for being in a tiny town in the middle of the country in east Texas. Portions plus taste plus consistency plus courteous staff all add up to being "as good as it gets" when you consider where you are. It's a hole in the wall, be sure, but it is no greasy spoon. Go there if you can.

I am now say in a booth enjoying a delicious hamburger with fries. The sour dough bun is as advertised. Warm and soft and perfect with my hamburger. The fries are crispy but not too salty. It's very peaceful right now but it's also early. I will definitely be back
