Uncle Rays BBQ chips USED to be the best potato chip you could find, and given its cheap price, you could never get enough. Then last year i went to the corner store to buy some chips and they was as plain as they could be. I emailed them complaining and they ignored it. Since then i have tried 3 bags..tonight's bag included. This was the worse one!! I even took a picture of them. They look like any plain chips you could buy anywhere! People tend to get tired of being used to one product then a company changes it to save on their overhead costs. They wont respond to bad reviews which shows lack of commitment to the people that made their company what it is today. Maybe because i live in Canada they lose some quality control. I love an underdog. Like Hertz and Avis, Uncle Ray's has been fighting it out with Better Made and losing, but I will give them credit for lots of things. 1. Commitment to the D. They could have put the plant anywhere, but they located in the D, and provides much needed employment for its citizens. I like that., and when I cant get the other chips, I will always buy Uncle Rays 2. Flavors. Ketchup, coney island, sour cream and onion and jalapeno are just a few of the flavors they offer. Sometimes when I want something different, and who doesn't once in a while, I reach for a bag. 3. Price. The national brands can be pricey. Uncle Ray's is not. You can get a big bag for 1.99, and you get a lot of chips. They are unbroken and really fresh. 4. The stories On the back of every bag is another chapter in Uncle Ray's life ended with a verse from the Bible. A lesson on every bag. Who couldnt love that? Ray came from the poor side of Detroit, and hasn't forgotten that. That is something special in my view. It's not easy to be number 2 in a world of firsts, but like the perennial contender, Uncle Rays refuses to go down for the count. You have to admire that, and the chips aren't bad. Try a bag. According to a statistic I read years ago, Michigan eats more potato chips than any other state in the union (other recent statistics show New Mexico and Virginia ) I just noticed Matthew J's review on Uncle Ray's chips and I also read Jim R's review. I totally agree w/ Jim. I use Lay's as the standard chip, they have a meticulous standard of quality and they maintain it with store inventories (read "In Search of Excellence") Ray's does a fantastic job of combining great taste for a great price. I actually like Ray's a little bit more than I like Better Made. With that being said I can't see Ray's beating Lay's on a national level unless they tried to go in to grab a market for low cost, good quality chips, but I don't think that would work because there are too many local companies around the country that fill that gap. Ray's isn't going to win any health contests either, they are pretty salty (not as salty as Aldi's chips though) Rating 4.25 For taste, low price, and cute stories on the back. Uncle Ray's represents a great local product and stands pretty tall next to Better Made. read more

The potato chips are absolutely delicious, and the stories on the back of the bag are often quite interesting. The pretzels however, taste like what I would imagine fungus growing on the floor boards of a crack house might taste like. Sorry Uncle Ray, but those mouldy wood chips that you've tried to pass off as pretzels kept this from being a five star review. Keep it up with the potato chips though! read more

These chips are surprisingly good, when compared to the competition. I find humor everywhere possible, and refer to these as a Japanese version of Lay's ... RAY'S, but they are actually less greasy with fewer broken chips. I will continue until something changes. read more

The sour cream and cheddar chips are mediocre but the amount you get is ridiculous, a 130g bag more than half of the bag is air. At least go up to 200g like the competitors. Might as well have bought a small bag of chips of the brand I love. read more

Uncle Ray's are my go-to Sour Cream and Onion chip whenever I can get my mitts on them. They have the best flavor of any SC & O chip out there. Also, I like the fact that they are the flat chip not the wavy ones most chip companys use for SC & O chips. As far as potato chips go, Uncle Ray's is in the top 5 of my list. I love them because they are a Detroit company. I love supporting quality Detroit companies along with other good quality Michigan companies. The stories and godly messages on the back of each bag is nice. They have plenty of flavors, and the Black Pepper was my favorite of the year. Bettermade is much more popular, but Uncle Ray's are great, and they don't get as much recognition as they should. Don't sleep on them. Next time you go to a corner store or gas station that has them, try a bag. You might find your new favorite chip. read more

I bought a bag of the Uncle Ray's kosher dill chips at a gas station, and they taste nothing like dill or pickles. Sadly, Lay's pickle chips are better. I am generally a supporter of smaller potato chip companies and was very disappointed in these. They are too thin and taste more like sour cream and onion chips than pickles. I would have given them two stars, because they are cheap, but the dogmatic story on the back really caught me off guard. If you want loyal customers, focus on your product rather than spouting your beliefs to unsuspecting customers. read more

I just bought my first 2 bags of Uncle Ray's here in Missouri. BBQ and Plain Wavy. I love the history of the company that I read on the back of the bag and want to support the smaller mom and pop companys.I myself was raised on a 450 acre dairy farm and come from a long line of old fashioned farmers. The chips are very fresh, crisp and have a sturdy texture that holds up to dips. My only complaint...and its a big one.... they are just too salty. So salty that I will probably not buy them again which is a shame. I WANT to support such a wonderful company. That is my only complaint, otherwise what a wonderful product. I just discovered this Detroit brand at my local food store and bought a bag of BBQ on a whim. What could I lose at $1? Besides, I like to support local manufacturers They are excellent potato chips and I am on my second bag. The flavor reminds me of Better Maid, but Uncle Ray's seems to have better quality control with more consistent chips. No burned chips or strange irregular chips! Uncle Rays has now become my favorite, number one brand of choice. Our family used to live on Birwood street in Detroit back in the 1950s, so the Uncle Ray's gave me a real blast from the past. I found Uncle Ray's Bar B Q chips at a BP convenience store, in Decatur, GA. I examined the packaging and saw they were from Detroit. I like trying regional foods and thought I'd give this upper mid-west product a try. Crisp and delicious is all I can say. Very economically priced. I'm not a huge eater of chips, but do go through a couple bags a month. Discovered Uncle Rays in the dollar section at local Price Cutter and gave them a try. Uncle Ray's as good as it get's. I'm from a little town just out side Dayton Ohio. West Milton to be exact, any who I was raised up on Mike -Sells and Charlies Chips. I happened to tangel with a bag of Uncle Ray's Hot flavored chip's. O.M.G. What can I say. My tounge JUMPED OUT OF MY MOUTH AND SLAPPED MY EYE-BROW'S CLEAN OFF MY FORHEAD. The only problem is our I.G.A. is the only store in the area I have been able to find them and that is hit and miss on the Hot chips. Love the life storys on the back of the bags, they bring back some of my life leasons. Please don't stop sending them south of your border as we love them here in Ohio. I bought a bag of the salt and vinegar chips a few weeks back. There was literally an ounce of the salt/vinegar spice in the back. It was so strong it 'burnt' my tounge. Don't get me wrong. I like a lot of flavor but these were inedible. I sent a note to the manufacturer with the lot number but got no response from them. The convenience store clerk took the remaining back and refunded my money. A few weeks before that I tried the Cheddar chips and that bag had very little flavor. The appear to have process control issues. From now on I'll spend a few more cents and get Frito Lay products. At least they are consistent. read more
