The food itself is really good, even down to the chips and salsa. The salsa has a mesquite, almost beef flavor to it and it's very unique. I ordered the 3 soft taco plate with beef fajita and the meat in these tacos are why I keep coming back. This plate comes with a side of rice and beans which I didn't really like the beans because they were the pinto beans in like a salsa mix. I don't know, but I prefer refried beans with my meal. I also don't like how the tacos come with cheese, lettuce and tomato. I always ask for just cilantro and onion since to me, that gives it a more authentic feel. The tortillas on the ends were VERY dry and since the tacos don't have a ton of filling, it was hard to fold and eat. The flavors are there in the meat nonetheless! I would have to say the fajita beef at Uncle Julio's is absolutely one of my favorites, it's so good. Service is ok. The manager at this location came to our table to greet us and he was very upbeat, friendly and all around a nice guy. Other than that, not the best but not the worst- wouldn't make me not want to come back but it's nothing to rave about. The inside is absolutely beautiful and classy! I enjoy the dim lighting in the dining areas as well as the lit up bar area. The restaurant looks very small from the outside but when you get inside, you will be pleasantly surprised, I promise. We dined there again last night and now that I'm doing a low carb diet, I found some great options that really amazed me. I first ordered a skinny margarita which was so delicious and refreshing at just 130 calories and I ordered the Guadalajara fajita combo with bacon wrapped shrimp. Instead of rice and beans I asked to substitute for some spaghetti squash and zucchini which was so delicious. Also I asked to substitute tortillas with my meal for lettuce wraps. I enjoyed my lettuce wrapped fajitas so much I can't wait to go back and eat them again. Service is always good. Food is consistently good. I think the price is very fair. read more

Besides Martina's snobby attitude & treatment, I'm giving a 5 star review. I asked her for a booth & she took us to a table. She stated she didn't have servers at the booths. Yet a few minutes later she sat 3 different set of people at booths. White people. Are you trying to set a racist tone here? I got way better treatment at Gordon Ramsay's, Michael Jordan's & Ditkas than this. Seriously & I'm coming back. If Martina is there, I will ask, am I at the status to get a booth finally? Since I'll be bringing some white friends for ya. Anyways the food was delicious & so were the drinks. Our waitress Adeloya was super sweet & attentive which helped alleviate Martina's treatment. Normally we only go to Uncle Julios for margaritas, guacamole and the chocolate piñata. We had friends from France, it was my wife's birthday and my daughter wanted to have dinner here. Party of 10 under Elizabeth. What a terrible mistake, I tried the carnitas tacos and they were terrible. The carnitas were overcooked and brittle, the corn tortillas were thin, cold and overall not editable. Our friend from France had the chicken fajitas and she did not like them. Her son also had tacos too and was unhappy with the quality. I can understand slow service due to covid but this was slower than usual. We were so unhappy with our meals that we left without having the chocolate piñata for my wife's 69th birthday. To each their own but we do not recommend Uncle Julios for dinner. First time here and probably my last. I was kind of excited to try this place, since i kept passing by it. My brother and i decided to try it, since it was his birthday. It looks like a nice restaurant from inside. It seemed like it was kept clean and the decor was nice. They give you chips and salsa to start. The chips had hardly any salt on them, if any. The salsa was bland, tasteless, and had no spice to it. My brother wanted to try the queso dip. It looked and tasted like the nacho cheese dip you'd get from 7-11. Again, it was bland, tasteless, and lacking any spice. I ordered their chicken enchiladas dinner with rice and beans. I asked for 3 of them, but the waiter must have misunderstood me, because only 2 were brought out. They were nice enough to bring me a 3rd at no charge. They were flavorless. I had to ask for hot sauce to add something to it. Even the hot sauce that i was brought was mild/medium in spiciness. It added some flavor, but not much. The rice tasted like Uncle Ben's Spanish rice, but with less flavor. The beans were typical canned baked beans. Again, flavorless. Not really something I'd expect from a "Mexican" restaurant. The service was just ok. It always felt like we were bothering the staff, when we asked them to bring us something. We had to ask for silverware, napkins, plates, and refill on water. To sum everything up: bland food, mediocre service, not worth the cost. I'd avoid this place. read more

Cool atmosphere for a Mexican restaurant in the mall. Came for a work holiday lunch and was pleased to see a lunch menu that had some good variety in choices. The chips and salsa to start are substantially better than others you get for free at most Mexican places. Went with the chicken and steak fajitas off the lunch menu. I asked for the chicken to be the honey chipotle chicken style, and they were easy & quick to accommodate that request. Waitress notified me that steak is cooked medium rare/medium and ensured I was okay with that. Fajitas come with sour cream, guacamole, rice, beans and a decent portion of steak and chicken. The honey chipotle chicken has bacon and a slightly sweet taste, which was good. The meat was also cooked perfectly. First start with the ceviche and guacamole appetizers we got. The guacamole is made fresh at your table and you can make it mild medium or hot which is quite nice. Wrote a negative review in the past and finally tried Uncle Julio's again. Well...this time we had a much better experience. It was just ahead of lunch rush on a weekend and we were hoping to get good service since they were not too busy. It worked. The food was good, the service was great! Our waitress, Trinity, was timely, friendly and thorough. Thank you for making it a great experience. Two minor reasons for this review to have 4 vs 5 stars. The table side guacamole had too much juice in it. That overpowered the flavor a bit. The other reason is we only had a minute or two with it ahead of our main course arriving at the table. The salsa was delicious - make sure to ask for the habenero one with the chips if you want a little more heat. The fajitas were recommended but not sure if it was the hot plate or what but the carnitas ended up being very dry and lacking tenderness. The tortillas though are something else. Softest and most delicious tortillas I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant, they definitely are carrying this 3-star review. Just waked out. Over 1 hour still no food even after asking our server where our food was. Two tables sat next to us different waitress station, served, ate and we're paying their check and we still hadn't even gotten our meal so we walked out won't be going back again. Complete FU from the waiter when he said he would check in food. Told us it was in window, then waited in 3 tables. When I called him out on it saying you told us our food was in the window. Considering this restaurant is connected to the mall, I had little expectations going in. But wow, the interior is absolutely beautiful. It reminded me of medieval times with its use of stone walls and rustic lighting. Was it Mexican looking? Not particularly. But I always appreciate a restaurant with good decor. Onto the food... You are brought complementary chips and salsa soon after you are seated. The chips are homemade, warm, thin, crispy, and perfectly salted. If you like heat, be sure to get the hot salsa because it definitely is hot. The salsa had a unique smokey taste that was probably from roasting the peppers. We also decided to get the table side guacamole. It was a great experience to watch the guacamole being made right in front of you! Plus, it tasted amazing. For drinks, I did not try their margaritas, but instead opted for their strawberry guava lemonade. It tasted exactly as it sounds. Just the perfect combination of strawberry, guava, and lemon. So refreshing and not too sweet. Definitely try this out when you come here! My mother and I tried out the carnitas tacos and the carne asada. The carnitas tacos were alright but nothing special. The pieces of pork were particularly fatty and I often would spit out a piece of fat while eating. On the other hand, the carne aside was wonderful! The meat was tender and flavorful. They gave us homemade tortillas that were fresh and warm to go with the meat. The combination tasted wonderful and was definitely worth the money. The only complaint I have was due to a little unclarity. Our server was extremely nice and tried to be very helpful. But, when she first explained to us that there was a guacamole cart, I figured the cart came to every table. We almost ate our whole basket of chips before we realized that the cart was not going to stop at our table. We ended up asking our server to have the guacamole cart brought to our table. We had to do some shopping at Woodfield and were starving. So we splurged and made a great call in doing so. There was a 15-20 minute wait, but we found some seats at the bar. Our bartender was very friendly and polite (forgot name, female with blonde hair working Friday night). I got a skinny margarita and my girlfriend got a swirl. Both drinks were made well. Our server was attentive and pleasant. We started out with chips and salsa and then ordered fajitas. My girl got the pork fajitas and I got steak and chicken. Very, very good. I was really surprised with the level of tenderness of steak and chicken was really good. The ride and beans that came with it tasted good too. I had placed a lunch order here about a month ago. It took a bit longer to make than usual. Marcelo threw in chips, salsa and queso. I was happy with that and left. Turns out a part of my order was missing he called me back to retrieve it. He let me know to come back again to make up for the mistake. Well yesterday I went back for lunch to dine in this time. I have a hard time even leaving this place one star. We were here this past Saturday with a close family friend. Our two little girls have birthdays coming up and they wanted to celebrate their birthday at a big kid restaurant with tacos. We tried to make it fun and special for them and brought them each a balloon and made it a really big deal for them. Our waiter was the worst most unpleasant waiter we've ever had. He came to the table, never acknowledged our girls celebrating their birthday, and had no hospitality at all. I honestly don't even remember him introducing himself as our waiter. We ordered our drinks and food and we asked if they had any special juice that they could make a fun drink for our girls (apple, pineapple, etc) to which he just responded "no. We don't." Never offered up any other suggestions or anything. This was my second reg flag. So the girls had water. At least the cups are cute as that was a disappointment. We ordered the food and for what it was it was severely overpriced. We had the steak fajitas for two. They were mostly fat and grizzle, there were more onions than anything, and two pieces of peppers. We actually asked the waiter to make sure he didn't give us the serving for one mistaking that we were splitting that! Then he never gave us our guacamole/cheese/sour cream that came with the fajitas and we had to flag him down to ask for that and he just responded "oh yea." Not "so sorry about that let me get that for you" nothing. He had such a poor attitude and you could tell he did not want to be working. After we ate, I asked him if they had anything special for birthdays to which he responded "yeah. A chocolate piñata." And walked away. By this time I was so frustrated and upset with him and our food we told the girls we were going somewhere moe special for their dessert. We were not about to drop $70 on two chocolate piñatas for them and risk having that be an unpleasant experience as well. I'm so sad that we had the experience that we did for our girls birthdays dinners. Attractive ambiance, friendly, fast service, and tasty food. Pricier than some other equally tasty Mexican restaurants though. When we arrived on Friday night we were told the wait time would be about an hour and a half. We saw there were plenty of empty tables available, so it must have been the availability of service that was holding things up. We inquired about bar seating, and were told that if we could find seats we could sit there. The bar itself was completely full but a few small tables and booths shared the same room. We spotted someone cleaning up one of the nearby booths and asked what the policy for that booth was. He said since it was in the bar area it was "first come, first served" so we lucked out and our wait time dropped from 1.5 hours to 1.5 minutes. This booth could comfortably seat four people and we had access to the same full menu as the rest of the restaurant. So very lucky! Service was very quick and we immediately received water, a basket of warm tortilla chips, and nice, smoky salsa. We decided to order a few different things and share, so we got the ceviche, veggie tamales (2), and the carnitas tacos, which included a small bit of beans and rice. This was plenty of food for the three of us to share and it was all very tasty. The only criticism food-wise was that the guacamole for the tacos was way too salty. When I put it on my taco I didn't notice just how salty it was, but when I went back to try the guacamole alone the salt was overpowering. My tablemates agreed. That aside, the ceviche was delicious, the tacos were flavorful, and the tamales had the most satisfying and thick corn dough. Though the meal was enjoyable, Uncle Julio's does not compete well value-wise with the many other excellent Mexican restaurants in the area. Of course, you may prefer not to eat at a hole-in-the-wall, but if you come here for the ambiance you will pay for it accordingly. To start off, I rarely ever write a review and am pretty easy going... however last night was probably the worst service I've ever had in my life. It took 45 minutes to get our first drinks and over 90 mins to get food after we complained to the manager. Our server was not apologetic nor checked in on us. The table next to us , which sat down after us, ate food and were leaving before our food was even served...which the went to the wrong table twice. The drinks and food were often incorrect and another meal was so greasy it was inedible. The management did reduce the overall bill for us...which earns them 2 stars instead of 1, but I guarantee we will not be coming back here ever again. read more

We did not enjoy our experience here at all. Things started ok and went downhill very quickly. We were seated at an acceptable table and got our chips and salsa quickly enough. We placed our drinks and entree orders at the same time, skipping appetizers. The waters and soda came timely. But the soda was mostly syrup no fizz. We had to order soda water from the bar and mix it ourselves. The cocktails did not come until after all the food was served. We were informed that there were issues at the bar and our cocktails would be delyed. But still we had to mention it later when asked how things were before getting the cocktails. They were not well made (one way too strong the other weak) and we weren't asked if we wanted salted rims or not. As for the entrees, at first only one of four was served by a pair that weren't our main wait person. That would have been fine except there was obviously no communication to them about our full order. They even asked us if we wanted plates to share the one entree. I had to tell them no, we are waiting on three more entrees and they appeared very confused. The rest of the entrees came quite a while later as the party whose came first was at least half way done eating. Also the table was way too small to easily hold all the separate plates & containers that came with our entrees (when they finally came) along with all our drinks and chips basket and salsa bowls. A very poor, cramped, uncomfortable dining experience. The food itself was quite poor quality especially for the prices. Most of the items were barely warm. For example, my enchiladas combo was not well made. The chicken was flavorless and in big chunks with the texture of a gob of unmelted, room temperature cheese. The ground beef one was super salty in both my and another of our party's meals. So much so that it made the margarita salted rim disgusting at that point. The cheese one had barely any cheese or onions in it at all, sadly. The rice that came with all four of our entrees was dry, hard and flavorless. It was like it had been kept warm for a long time while it continued drying out. The made in house flour tortillas were not impressive in taste or texture. The skirt steak fajitas were the best thing anyone in our party ordered but at over $25 per order the meat portion was very stingy as were the avocado and sour cream toppings. Our bill with tax and tip was over $150 for four adults and it felt like a complete waste of time and money. We will not be returning here ever again. It was an utterly unsatisfactory experience. I've spent far less for far superior dining experiences even at Woodfield mall at Red Robin, Cheesecake Factory and P.F. Changs. Do yourself a favor and skip this place. There are a dozen Mom & Pop taquerias with better food nearby and even Fat Rosie's across the street on Meacham has better atmosphere and food. Taco Maya has good Artisan tacos and way better salsa. And when all else fails Taco Bell is a way better value. read more

We order take out at least twice a month. These orders are $200 plus as we order the fajita for four meals and some appetizers. When you eat there they are short staffed and service has gone downhill. This is why we switched to carry out. Every time the order is wrong and we let it go. Tonight we ordered extra queso and they actually argued with us about an extra bag of chips. $220 with an extra order of queso and they want to argue over a bag of chips that should have been included. It's like nobody wanted to be there at 1pm on a Sunday afternoon, and I definitely won't be back! This location is great! The food is amazing and so are their margaritas and sangria. I normally get their beef enchiladas, but their soft taco plate is amazing, as well. The atmosphere is great and dimly lit, and it's a relaxing place. Although this location is part of Woodfield mall, once you're in the restaurant, it doesn't feel like you are in a mall location. You feel secluded from the mall, which is nice. Sometimes mall restaurants are worse than when they stand alone, but in this case, Uncle Julio's keeps their great taste. My normal location to visit is in Old Orchard because it is closer for me, but when I come to Woodfield, this is my first choice restaurant outside of Texas de Brazil. Service has always been very good. I suggest if you are coming on a weekend, make reservations because it does get pretty busy. However, regardless if is busy or not, I have always had nice waiters and waitresses who check up on me and who assure my dinner is superb. Normally I would choose the nachos. But when I saw them they didn't appeal to me. I finally decided on the Guadalajara, no drink. I chose this meal, because it had shrimp wrapped in bacon. Unfortunately, that was the only thing, that I really enjoyed about the meal. For me it was overpriced, especially for something that I didn't want. My bill was over $35. With tip included. The waitress was nice. Well, at least I tried the restaurant. I was hoping for a better outcome. The staff was friendly and the food was good. But we got seated at 4:30 and got our food at 6. We didn't even get drinks for 25 min They need more staff. Maybe wait until holiday rush is over. read more

I just want to throw out there, I was craving shrimp tacos. I should have read the menu before hand; there were none. I asked if I can add it on the street tacos they had and it was a no. But it's cool. I had a waiter that was very social, he was super cool and quirky. But the food was just so bad. I had the shrimp and fish ceviche. Super super strong fish taste, and not the good taste. It was a 1/10. It was like the white version of aguachiles. The table side gauc was okay, my kid loved it. 6/10 for sure, only cause it didn't have a fresh gauc taste. But eh. It's guac. The enchiladas my girl had were so bad, super strong tangy vinegar tase from the sauce. Yellow cheese in the enchilada, chicken was subpar. I had a the shrimp fajitas. 2/10. Shrimp was extremely salty. Onions were just plastered all over them. Flour tortillas were okay. I didn't finish the food at all. We got a pineapple Jalapeño margarita 0/10 immediately asked for it to get swapped out, for a chilled lime drink 4/10. It just wasn't good food. The server really made it great but the food was horrible. My gf literally said we cant go back. I don't know how this place is still open. read more
