ordered to-go via the website. picked up at the scheduled time. the staff member that brought out my order seemed friendly. i got the cochinita tacos on corn flour and a side of frijoles ala charra. the tacos came with mexican rice. the bag also came with complimentary chips & salsa. the tacos were decent - a little fatty but the taste was good. the rice was horrible - both taste and texture. the beans were the best part of the meal. the chips were good but the salsa was a little bit too smoky for me. not sure if the whole meal was worth $25 but glad i gave it a try. i forgot to take pictures because i was so hungry :( read more

After spending the morning Xmas shopping at Woodfield Mall, we stopped in for lunch (they are part of the mall). Our past experience has always been good (food and beverage) but this time we noticed it's gone down in quality/freshness and affordability. We ordered margaritas and queso to start, and also put in our meal order. While we waited, chips and salsa were brought to us. The chips were from the bottom of the barrel--just bits and pieces. Their salsa was bland. Next they brought queso, but not our drinks. The queso tasted like melted velveeta with some rotel mixed in. Then the meal arrived. I asked the server where in the world our drinks were?! Oh, sorry, he said, and left to find out. They finally arrived. I ordered the Tex-Mex combo with 2 enchiladas and ground beef taco. The cheese enchilada with a rojo sauce was decent, the chx one with verde sauce was so-so. The tortillas looked odd. Almost slightly undercooked. My taco was in a crunchy taco shell that looked like it came out of a box. Naturally, it fell apart the minute I took a bite. Beans and rice were included but were nothing special. My son ordered the chicken and steak fajita combo. It cost $25 but came out on a 6 inch plate, which included the onions & peppers! The meat portion was laughable. Again, the meal was just passable. Lastly, my husband ordered the chile con carne enchiladas. He said they were good, but didn't elaborate. Honestly, this place is on par with On The Border, but with higher prices. We went out for a birthday party the other night, service was less than stellar. Took 20 minutes from dropping off drinks to coming back to see if we wanted anything. We had to specifically ask for our water to be refilled, only two people got tortillas, and the waiter was never around long enough to ask for assistance. I'd think maybe he was over worked, or over stressed, but by the time we were fully into it, we were one of the only parties left in the restaurant. My advice, head across the hall to the Cheesecake Factory. The service may be slow, but they seem to care. read more

We had a reservation and arrived a bit early. I think they were understaffed for the day though because it seemed like there were a few reservations but all waiting to be seated. This was fine but it did seem a little slow due to that fact. Our server said it was their first day haha so we weren't expecting much, but even though they had a bit of a rough start they did great overall--pretty attentive all things considering. I'd say the portions are pretty generous, and you can share a platter. The chips are light and crispy while the salsa has a unique robust flavor to it--maybe roasted peppers? Our kids really enjoyed it. They offer kids meals, but our kids actually ate more of our dishes than their own! My husband ordered shrimp fajitas, and the shrimp were flavored pretty well, but we just thought they'd be bigger. I shared a chicken and steak fajita with my mom, and the chicken was really tender--I was surprised. The skirt steak was pretty good too; our kids really liked the meats. I'd say the food is fine, but definitely feels more Mexican American. If you want to go somewhere for a nice get together but not fancy, then this is a great option. The main draw though is probably the chocolate piñata! This was a super fun and unique experience. Our server was so nice and gave our 2 kids their own little bat. Everything seems made from dark chocolate too or something less sweet than milk chocolate, which I appreciated! It's this chocolate ball that's hung, and inside is fresh fruit and churro. The board had cinnamon, dipping chocolate, and whipped cream. You crack open the chocolate piñata and then the fruit and churro bites spill out and you dig into it! So much fun. I've been visiting various uncle Julio's locations all across the Chicagoland area for over 25 years and this is my first visit to the Schaumburg location. Came on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and also got enticed by an online coupon for $20 off as well. I haven't been back to an uncle Julio's in a while only to find out on this visit that the menu has drastically been overhaul and simplified. And I don't think it's been simplified for the better quite frankly because my usual menu item the Jalisco is no longer available. The drink menu continues to be a staple, and it is very vast. The good part is that the portions remain almost the same, which is very generous, considering that the prices are also higher. Also good that the chips and salsa continues to be unlimited as well. On this particular day and visit, our waiter was so incredibly friendly and fantastic !!! I would definitely come back here again not because I know the food or because it's consistent but for some reason the service this particular Sunday was on point !!! read more

This was my first time at any Uncle Julios and I was very impressed. We received a warm greeting by who I believe is the manager, and seated promptly in a booth as preferred. Our waiter was friendly and attentive which we also appreciated. As for the food, all three of thought our food was great! For me I enjoy a simple beef tacos, which can be difficult to find as most places offer chicken and steak (but not ground beef). The flavor was outstanding! My daughter enjoyed her quesadilla and my wife her enchiladas. Wonderful experience and I can't wait to visit this or another Uncle Julios location. read more

Very disappointing experience at Uncle Julio's in Schaumburg. We waited over an hour for our food, which was especially difficult with four small kids. Our drinks took a long time to arrive and one was completely forgotten. When the food finally came, my husband's fajitas were served without tortillas and it took over 10 minutes after asking to get them. The biggest issue was my sister's tacos, which had multiple long blonde hairs in them. It was so gross that several of us couldn't continue eating. We brought it to the manager's attention. She did comp the taco meal, but told us the "hair" was actually tomatoes, even though the tacos had mango salsa and no tomatoes. The explanation felt very dismissive. Uncle Julio's was a pleasant surprise tonight! We stopped in after hitting up Woodfield mall. We sat at the bar since it was empty. The decor is trendy and the music volume was soft so we could talk without yelling! The bartender took our orders immediately and checked up on us numerous times throughout the night. I got the chicken fajitas and my wife got the cassbiria. The fajitas were juicy and seasoned very tastefully. The chips and salsa were excellent and even the spicy one wasn't very hot. My wife liked her cassebiria but said it was slightly dry. It does come with broth though. Overall, we really enjoyed Uncle Julio's. Good service, good pricing, and good atmosphere. Having gone to an Uncle Julio's in Texas years back - and having found it a pleasant experience, I brought hub-hub here for din-din last night. Warmly greeted on what appeared to be a slow Tuesday night, we were led to a nice booth - the restaurant was tastefully appointed and initial service was reasonably timely. I ordered a Julio's Gold margarita (their most affordable option) and then the star of the show- the table-made fresh guac! My goodness, this was a SHOW. And as you can see by the pic attached, it looked absolutely stunning when presented to us! The flavor was absolutely spot-on as well! The only touchy point was the chips - which were so thin they broke the second you tried to scoop up some of that fresh guac - oh my! Uncle Julio's- the chips are "nessa" - let's get back some chips that can actually handle the guac - a little thicker, please! That was really the reason for the demerit. Not good when your signature table-made guac can't be scooped up! Now the margarita was small- being affordable - but covered the bases for me. Hubby ordered a two-taco platter, and deemed said tacos as quite serviceable. Me? I ordered 2 ground beef enchiladas and 1 chicken combo (note to self- I always end up critiquing ground beef in this dish, so why do I keep ordering it? Hmmm....something to take up in therapy, I suppose?). The combo was great; the chicken enchilada was spot-on, and the beans (a supporting star that has a long afterlife in - and out - of my body) were just great. So - will we come again? Sure will! The guac alone is worth it! But please, Uncle Julio's - do something about the chips - something's gotta be done about your chips! read more

Back 20 years ago this establishment was an automatic 5 stars, however, time has not served this chain well. Portions have gone south and prices have risen immensely. Their chips and salsa was so addictive, I would ruin my appetite before the meal came. They even watered the salsa down and changed that great flavor. The food was good. I had the mini britilla taco appetizer that was ok. A little on the greasy side. Definitely unique and something not usually on menus in Mexican restaurants. My friend wanted brisket enchiladas and the kitchen was kind enough to make those for her. She really enjoyed them. The margarita could've used more tequila which seems to be the norm everywhere these days. Service was slow even though the restaurant wasn't packed. Large space and great for big table parties. First this place feels more like a steak house vs a Mexican restaurant. I'm guessing they took it over and never remodeled. Second service was great. They came by multiple times and made sure we're good. Problem, it's Wednesday at 7pm and it sounds like a dance club. Can't hear conversations due to the noise. For the food, I was able to substitute in my dinner and it seemed fine. Honestly, nothing stood out and it's just ok. I did like the chips and salsa. Finally able to try it. I ordered the Barbacoa Beef Fajitas. It was ok. Tender and tasty. My sisters Carne Asada looked good. I didnt get to taste it tho maybe next time. Most of my family ordered tacos and i didnt get any complains so it must have been good. The best thing about the order is the flour tortilla. Its made from scratch and its amazing!!! Seriously! The only complain i have is my rice might be old or left out or maybe at the bottom of the batch. There were some hard grains. Like when its been left out. We also ordered the Chocolatr Pinata for my cousins birthday. It has fruits and churros inside. The churros are yummy! Our server was great. Christmas present shopping is arduous. I need to seek out a location to rest my feet and eat something to replenish my energy. Uncle Julio's is conveniently located in the mall. Since I'm craving for Tex-Mex food. Despite the fact that the mall was crowded, especially due to the holidays, they seated me immediately. The atmosphere is influenced by Spanish design features such as brick and wood. Those elements give off an exquisite ambiance. I started with the nacho especial; their chip is distinctive; it reminds me of a tortilla sliced in half. Individual chips are topped with fried beans, melted cheddar cheese, and a steak and chicken combination. Pico de gallo and guacamole are provided on the side to enhance color and taste. It appears simple, yet it is excellent. The carne asada, one of their mesquite-grilled specialties, was my main meal. It was presented on a lovely wooden board. The skirt steak was cooked to my specifications and tasted delicious. The side dishes go nicely with the steak, and putting the meal together was enjoyable. This dish alone is worth it. I had churros for dessert. The exterior has a good crunch texture, while the interior is delicate. It's gently dusted with a cinnamon-sugar mixture. It came with chocolate and caramel dipping sauces. I'm not a fan of the caramel. The sauce is diluted and cool. I wanted it to be warm like the chocolate sauce. Overall, It lacks color in my perspective, with a boring brown color palette, but it was good. From the hostess to the server and the management, the service is superb. Our server was excellent; he was pleasant and attentive, ensuring that our needs were met. Went to Uncle Julio's in Schaumburg at the Woodfield mall yesterday for dinner. The restaurant is beautiful - well decorated, low/dim lighting, very cozy ambience. Surprisingly it was mostly empty and by the time we left still there were not a ton of tables/customers for the massive size of the restaurant. There was no hostess at the front which was frustrating. The menu is not as great as it was in the future - I was hopeful for their former delicious flautas which they no longer have. :( The menu is a bit expensive. I tried the chicken dorado tacos, they were ok but not out of this world. Hubby got the enchiladas which had plenty of cheese but he felt they were kind of spicy. The meal came with chips and salsa of various spiciness. There was a table of women right next to us that was extremely loud which was annoying. It would be nice if the menu wasn't as pricey and had more options but overall not bad. read more

The ambiance and service are GREAT. I was there for lunch with a group of 5, 3 of which ordered the combination lunch and had the same comments. The enchiladas were delicious across the board. The crispy tacos were okay and the soft taco (mine) was inedible. I say that because I believe the tortillas are handmade as they are thick and gummy. The chicken was not dry, so I ate part of the inside like a child. The chips and salsa are delicious and my friend's fajitas were apparently good as well. I really wish I could give more stars, because the service was really, really good as was some of the food, but considering there are so many options in the area, I'm not sure that I would go to Uncle Julio's again. read more

Portions are super small yet still expensive. Staff is still good. Food is meh. Definitely has fallen from how it used to be. Understand with inflation everything is more $$. Keep the portions the same and raise the price if you have to. But they raised the price and cut the food by over 1/2 the size. Definitely will not go back anymore. read more

We got there right at 1p - the restaurant was largely empty with three families waiting to be seated. He said they couldn't seat us until 1:30 - but mind you I could have made reservations at any time as I did it while we were driving there. He then said he would go speak with a manager. He came back and said they were "getting a table together for us." After 10 minutes, I asked how the table was coming and he very rudely told us to come back at 1:30.
