Bad food. Grumpy employees. Stinky facility. The facility smells like a dive bar. That smell that usually comes from the floor drain in a public bathroom. The entire restaurant has a wet dirty dish towel smell. The two workers seem grumpy/annoyed that people are here to order and eat food. Especially if you have the audacity to want to eat inside the smelly restaurant. The food is not great. The rice is clearly boxed rice, and not made fresh in house. You can tell by the rehydrated peas and other previously dehydrated vegetables in the rice. The Al Pastor is definitely not real Al Pastor. It is premade pork carnitas at best. Honestly it might even just be somewhat spiced premade pulled pork. And if you were thinking that if you order a meal for dine in, it will come with chips. Think again. Chips do not come with any of the orders. If you want to go somewhere called Ponchos and eat Mexican food, do yourself a favor and go to the location on Wise Road. It's an unbelievable night and day difference. Everything about this experience was terrible. Hungry after a morning jog/walk at Busse Woods and decided to come here for lunch. It's always a great sign of authenticity when there are more Mexican people than non- that were eating there, haha. I got a carne asada burrito with horchata, and my meal was very filling and quite delicious. Usually I don't like spicy stuff, but I was ADDICTED to the green and red sauces on the table. I put them on every bite of my burrito, mmm... The red sauce had a nice smoky flavor, and the green sauce was nice and fresh. The restaurant was big and open, and the decor looked fairly new. Bathroom was really clean, too. Lots of options on the menu, so I can't wait to come back and try some other dishes another time. read more

I took my Subaru to the dealership nearby and searched a place to eat since I was told to wait 2 hrs. Pancho's was right next door so I had to try it. I got Chiles Rellenos Plate, everything was fresh and delicious. Queso inside peppers melted enough to stretch but not to leak and thats perfect condition. I really liked the way they presented tortillas, in this cute little sombrero thing :) Employees were very nice, I got my food in 5 min and it seemed quite clean inside. If I was working next door I would definitely be here more often. 5 stars from me, keep on going! read more

What a great surprise! My son and I were looking for a night of cheap eats. After reading a few of the reviews of Pancho's, which is only a couple of miles from our home, we decided to give it a try. First of all, the place does not look like much from the outside. And, when you walk in, I have to admit we had a thought or two about staying. That is, until we realized that more than half of the place was shut off for a private party. It was someone's 70th birthday party - lots of people and a pretty good Beatles cover band. I'm not sure if this is the way it always works there, but we ordered at the counter. The menu is on the wall next to the register and it is VERY extensive. The menu covers the more traditional meats and veggies to the more exotic (for Gringos like me) such as Lingua. Since it was the first time I was there, I went with a Chicken Burrito to be safe. My son ordered a Pork Burrito. Neither of us had beans or rice, which was fine since the Burritos were so large. You are given both green and red salsas in condiment squeeze bottles. After tasting both (which were really good), I used the red which was pretty spicy. For $15 we had two large, fresh, home-made burritos and two cokes with live music. I'm not so sure we'll expect a band the next time we're there, but we will be regulars here. read more

First impressions last forever. I went there for the first time a little after 11am. It's "Pancho's Burritos" so I figured I'd order the burrito. Steak burrito with everything in it, and a beer. The beer was good. The burrito was marginally warm inside, and in some spots, cold. I'm sure the meat was cooked, but I'm guessing that since they just opened for the day, the meat wasn't heated through. The outside was hot, cuz the cook rolled it on the flattop grill for a bit before serving. Too many other choices around for a second try anytime soon. read more

Comparing to other Mexican restaurants this place is bad. The steak you have to pay an up charge of 2 dollars on is very cheap. Usually would over look a mistake here and there but I really wanted my Chile relleno taco lol. Ordered an order of 1 quesadilla , 2 al pastor tacos and 1 Chile relleno taco. Specified rice and beans inside Chile relleno taco like I always do. Got home and missing my Chile relleno taco. The al pastor tacos had very little meat and were stuffed full of rice and beans which I did not request. Called and the lady ,im presuming is the owner denied that she made a mistake and said I did not order a Chile relleno taco . It was escalating into an argument instead of acknowledging her mistake and making it right. Been a customer for years and have never complained and have let a few mistakes slide but this was not cheap when I get charged for a Chile relleno taco and didn't get it. I know people that rave about this place and after lunch there, I really don't understand why. It's a decent sized place with a large menu. I especially liked how the combo meals are all the same price with a medium drink included. Once you order, Pancho's has no system in place for calling orders or a number corresponding to your order or any sort of table delivery. They pretty much just sling plates up onto the counter and you take your food (hoping you take the right food). I ordered the #1 taco combo which came with 3 marinated pork tacos on soft corn tortillas. They piled them with lettuce and tomato...yuck!! I would have preferred onions and cilantro! The meat was marinated but it was not more like al Pastor and barbecued. My tacos were flooded with meat juices/marinade liquid that they were very soggy and messy to eat. I also had rice and beans which were good and the guacamole on the side was good too. There are tons of other fast casual Mexican places that blow Pancho's out of the water. I'd go to a Taco Burrito King or El Famous Burrito or Taco Village in Des Plaines any day before I'd go back to Pancho's. read more

Pancho's rates a solid 3.5 stars in my book, actually. Honestly the place is pretty damn good, it just has the unfortunate circumstance of being located less than a mile from a Mexican place that is absolutely superb in Cantarittos and it just does not measure up by comparison. That said, this place is a solid stop in for "authentic" Mexican food without question, and it's always nice to mix things up. While we are on the subject of the whole "authentic" thing, I am not sure if there is any actual measuring stick for what constitutes this trait, but it is a descriptor I see thrown around a lot. To illustrate this point, at Pancho's virtually every time I have shown up there I am about the only white guy in the joint. The guy behind the counter speaks almost no English and my Spanish skills do not extend much farther than being able to order beers and lap dances in Tijuana. Ordering is sort of a case study in non-verbal communication. I have stopped in a couple of times on the weekends to get carry out and they have non-stop Karaoke in the attached bar. It's is wall to wall Mexican dudes in cowboy hats and boots. Yup, I would say it qualifies as a authentic then. The menu here is quite long, and it has options to suit about anyone's taste buds. It's also handy to swing by if I am on the go with client meetings and need carry and eat food. Both the Burritos themselves as well as the Tortas are tightly compacted and can easily be polished off while blasting down the highway. I have tried most of the accompanying meats they have here at one point or another though I recommend you stick with either the Carne Asada or the Pastor as they are both excellent. Fresh tortilla's are also kicked out nice and hot from their press. I have tried the Tacos and Gorditas here as well but I always gravitate back to the burritos. They are always a safe bet. The really disappointing aspect here is the sauce and salsa they have. It is pretty weak. I admit I like really spicy food but this stuff is to the point my Mom could eat it. It needs to pack at least some punch. There is no table service here. You just go up to the counter to place your order and they throw it up in the window for you when it is ready. No shortage of places to sit as the inside is huge and is recently remodeled, though this was mostly done to accommodate the aforementioned Karaoke/bar crowd. Overall this is a solid option for Mexican grub and food comes out quick which is handy when I am pressed for time. read more

Torta Milanesa, how do I miss thee? Yes, this is by far the best one I have ever had and since I moved down to Miami, I go to Hoffman on a regular basis when in Chicago to have some of the good food that I enjoyed when I lived there. The Torta has a nice slice of avocado which I absolutely adore - this really is the closest thing to eating in Mexico that I have had anywhere. YUM! Too good, and so authentic! Wow, this place was simply awful -- a significant step below the standard boring mediocre taqueria of which there are so many in Chicagoland these days. At most of these joints you can at least finish your meal even if you decide there's no reason to add the place to your regular rotation. The meat in our dishes was flavorless mushy chunks with a bizarre squishy texture vaguely reminiscent of animal protein. This was the same no matter the protein type -- pork for me, beef for the wife, chicken for the offspring. This really was a one-star meal but the service was competent so that merits at least a two-star rating. I know there are some great dining options out in the suburbs so this isn't just a snobby city-dweller dismissal... but man, what passes for a "good" taqueria out there in vinyl-sided suburbia is absolutely pitiful. read more

The regular burritos here are the size of an infant - the ground beef-filled offering was a solid half pound of spicy seasoned ground beef, tucked into a large tortilla with wilted lettuce, a spoonful of tomatoes and a squirt of creama. My Combo #3 was a tender pork-filled tamale, a greasy enchilada topped with sliced cheese and a gooey, cheese-filled quesadilla. There was a nice little nest of bagged tortilla chips, a dollop of spicy guacamole, a nice smear of cheese-topped refried beans and cold, dry rice - all for less than $9.00. Sadly, my chili relleno was ready and plated far earlier than the rest of the freshly-prepared meal, and the guy at the grill opted to reheat my perfectly fried pepper on the flat-top, pressing it down so flat it was almost unrecognizable. Where do I start. This was just simply not good. I really wanted to like this place. The gucamole was creamy and tasted like straight cilantro. The "steak" nachos are suspect at best. The "meat" as they advertised....is werid. There is no flavor. In fact I stopped eating it. I think they may have given me tongue or pig skin instead. It certainly didn't taste like steak. I hate when liquid cheese is used on nachos. It makes the chips soggy and is a cheap way of making nachos. Where's the Chihuahua chesse? Now I will say my son got a chicken quesdilla and inhaled it.
