An upscale expensive Mexican restaurant but has a great Happy Hour! House Margs $6 (frozen or rocks) and chips queso/guac for $6. Sat a the bar with okay service - had to get our own silverware and ask for a menu and twice for chips/salsa to begin. Semi busy bartender, I think. Loved the taco bar with all the fixings! Splurged on two menu margaritas but I'm telling ya get to the happy hour those margs are just as good! The 2 menu margs were just ask expensive as our taco bar, and 2 happy hour margs. Definitely a great place for foods and margs - again go for the happy hour!
This was my second visit. You can tell they are struggling with service. We waited longer than we should for our server to come to our table. I love the decor of this place! The furniture, pictures and color scheme are beautiful. It's also very spacious. I'm not a fan of their steak. First visit I had steak tacos and the meat was tough. Second visit I had the steak quesadilla and the meat was tough and fatty. I''m giving four stars for the chocolate pinata! What a fun experience! You're given a wooden stick to crack it open. You can't tap lightly. It's thick chocolate. Inside are strawberries, pineapples and churros. You're given chocolate sauce and whip cream decorates the board. The board is huge so you're need to clear the table before they bring it out.
The service was great, the food was amazing and the drinks were top tier!! 10/10 would definitely recommend!!
Let's say you were in Frontenac for some reason, you wanted to eat Mexican food and you didn't want to go anywhere else, lest someone break the radio antenna off from your car and use it to smoke rocks. In that case, you might honestly want to eat at Uncle Julio's. The food is actually pretty decent, and it's reasonably priced by the standards of today's restaurant meals--which is to say that it's not at all financially responsible to eat there. But it could be worse! I've eaten there a few times over the years. Only once, the first time I ate there, was there more than a small handful of people there eating. I got takeout from there once on a Cinco de Mayo, and it was weirdly amazing in a way that it never was before or since. It tasted the way (literally any) food tastes when you're high on marijuana, but I was as sober as a judge. The last time I was there before today, I was forced to sit at the bar for a while until my table was ready, even though there was hardly anyone else there. Was the table not emotionally prepared? Once I was finally seated, I was given free guacamole as consolation. This was the best guacamole I've ever had in my life, with the caveat that I'm a savage and a brokie. I've hardly ever left the state of Missouri, and I may never leave again in life. In general, I'd say the food is good, but it's purposely engineered to appeal to decidedly unsophisticated people. All of the meat dishes are weirdly sweet, the way that they are at an Americanized Chinese restaurant, there's melted cheese, sour cream and what have you in places where it's not called for, as if this were a Taco Bell, and the fajitas aren't sufficiently charred. This time, I went with the street tacos, because you can't really go wrong with tacos, and because I'm trying tacos from different restaurants to compare them. I notice that more and more restaurants are carrying street tacos in addition to regular tacos, and indeed that is the case here. In addition to the street tacos, you can get tacos with flour tortillas or crunchy, Taco Bell-style shells, with various kinds of meat. They're all served with rice and pinto beans, which is mighty generous of Uncle Julio and prevents me from having to order them à la carte, or whatever's Spanish for à la carte. Usually, street tacos come with just meat, onions, cilantro and a squeeze of juice from a dry lime wedge that may have already been used, on a corn tortilla. At Uncle Julio's, you also get cheese melted down into the tortilla, fire roasted jalapeños, avocado and pico. Was the purpose of all this to justify the price? I wasn't about to ask if I could pay less for something more authentic, because I liked the waitress' hair and I didn't want her to think that I don't have a lot of money. As was the case with the carnitas fajitas I had on another visit, maybe the single worst thing I've ever had in a Mexican restaurant, the steak was weirdly, unnecessarily sweet. The cheese was also unnecessary, but I wasn't mad at it. It's cheese, so it can never be truly unwelcome, and it may have lent some structural support to the corn tortillas, which tend to fall apart. The jalapeños, avocado and what have you give it a different vibe from something you might get at a tacqueria. It's served with a habanero salsa that's shockingly good, the way that guac I once had was really good, but it kinda overshadows everything else. The tacos are honestly better without it. Service was weirdly inattentive, given that there was hardly anyone else there. The girl seemed nice enough, but I'd be curious to know where else she had to be. Personally, I wouldn't have minded if she stood there the entire time and watched me eat, in case I needed something.

It was a rainy day so we decided to venture out to a new place for lunch. We ended up at Uncle Julio's near Frontenac. It bills itself as a Tex-Mex fresh cuisine and it did a great job living up to it! The interior was sophisticated and made me think it would be a fun Fri. Night date spot for sure. For a rainy Sat at noon it was just starting to get busy . We were quickly brought complimentary chips and salsa that reminded me of the old Chevys chips and salsa if you were around for them. Our food was fresh, hot and delicious! The menu was limited and yet had plenty of options to choose from at the same time. We were pleased with the portions sizes and endless chips! Go give them a try!
Nice restaurant located in Frontenac serving up delicious food and drinks. That have happy hour bar specials which are mainly drinks and a few appetizers. The menu is smaller which is nice not having to read a book to decide what to order. The food arrived hot and flavorful and a nice size portion, the taco was great and the chicken enchilada was full of flavor, moist and worth getting. Definitely a good choose for lunch or dinner.
This was our first time trying Uncle Julio's and we will definitely be back! When we pulled into the parking lot we thought they were closed because the patio was empty and it was hard to see if there was anyone inside. (It was almost 10 pm) when we arrived. My husband decided to get out and just check to see if they were open and I'm so glad that he did. The decor inside was beautiful. We sat in a booth at the bar and my husband noted how comfortable the booths were. I agree and I loved the look of them as well. The lighting was a bit dim for me so it made it a little difficult for me to see the menu. I wear glasses and my husband does not and he didn't have a problem so it's just my old eyes causing problems. Once seated our waiter quickly greeted us and took our drink orders. He told us the specials for the night and even offered his recommendations which was nice. He was very friendly and attentive. Onto the food. My husband ordered queso with ground beef and asked for it to come with our meal because we were splitting the fajitas I ordered. Our server brought it out a few minutes before the meal because he didn't want it to get so. I appreciate that he did that and made sure we were able to enjoy it and not be served cold queso dip. The fajitas I ordered came just a few minutes after the dip and they were soooo good! I loved the entire plate. The barbaco meat was so flavorful. I loved that they had zucchini and squash in with the fajita vegetables. The dish is also served with beans and cilantro lime rice. I am a big fan of beans and I was expecting refried beans but what came out was black beans and oh my goodness were they good! They reminded me a bit of a smoky, spicy chili. I loved them. The cilantro lime rice was also good but the beans were the winner for me on that plate. The fajitas were also served with sides of sour cream, cheese and guacamole and they guacamole was excellent. I can say I am so happy we tried this place out. We will definitely be back and will be bringing friends and family along with us next time so they can try it out as well! read more
Omg this place is so fun and authentic and boogie. Everything made fresh and sometimes in front of you. I got steak fajitas n loved it. My bestie ate the homemade guacamole like it was ice cream. My other best friend celebrated her birthday here and got to swing at a chocolate fruit piñata. Now we left with a 160$ check us three with two drinks n paying for birthday treat but well flavored. I was expecting more as the presentation of the food was beautiful - picture perfect. I love Mexican food so anytime I get a chance to try a new spot I am excited. The service was very attentive and was very kind (which was refreshing). Service along would be five stars and we never had to ask for anything our server was ahead of the game. The restaurant had a nice vibe so ambiance was nice as well. I may go back as maybe I just ordered the wrong item and have learned at times this does make a difference. read more

Mexican is my favorite food and this restaurant did not disappoint! The margaritas were phenomenal, decently priced, and all the food was tasty. They say they are known for their fajitas and they were great. Their rice & beans is similar to a soup which sounds odd but was very delicious. Ambience was great and our server did a great job. When the server first brought out my plate I only had 2 pieces of chicken not including the large amount of oil on the bottom of my plate I asked for a wet towel 3 times and all they gave me was napkins. She took my plate back where they gave me 3 small pieces add to it!! Overall the food was ok but the portions were off!! I'll probably be back if they can fix that!! I'm giving this place 2 stars only because the inside is nice and the waiter was good. I came here with a friend for her birthday and we were very underwhelmed by the food and drinks. My friend had made a reservation for 12pm and when we got there, we were told to take a seat. While waiting, 2 other parties of 2 people each came in without reservations and were seated immediately. Not a big deal to wait, but the situation was weird. My friend got a mojito that tasted mostly like simple syrup and I got a frozen margarita that was very sugary and not enough lime or alcohol. We got the queso to start and that was good to eat with the chips! The food came out very quickly, so that was good. My friend got the chicken fajitas and the plate was hot and sizzling, but the chicken looked very bland and she said it tasted like there was no seasoning on any of her food. Hard pass. According to the website there are many locations nation-wide but I really do not see myself stopping in again. It's not terrible but not great. The flavor and quality was only okay. This location is particularly busy and service was slow and not paced well. On the bright side: the best thing I had was the bacon wrapped shrimp. Guacamole: portion is tiny for the $$$ and not flavorful Honey habanero bacon wrapped shrimp: sauce was yummy with the usual habanero kick but shrimp was over cooked (chewy and firm) Tex-mex combo: rice was dry, cheese was dry on enchiladas and the "crunchy" taco was soggy on one side the lettuce was pale and sad. Complimentary salsa and chips: salsa has very Smokey flavor than a fresh salsa taste. Didn't care for the chips :( read more

This was our second time coming here. We chose Uncle Julio's for its convenience after our daughter had a performance at Ladue high school. We got there around 8:45 when the main dinner crowd was leaving. We were greeted fairly quickly but waited a bit longer than expected to be seated. The restaurant itself is impressive on the inside. Spacious and impressive decor. The menu is pretty straight forward but kinda pricey. We just shared some appetizers because we were saving room for the chocolate piñata. Service is very slow. Took about 20 minutes to get acknowledged by the waiter. The cups they brought out were all dirty. Nearly all of them had something on them, food debris, lipstick. We asked for new cups and they were still dirty. I think it's because the cups they use for water are impossible to clean. I decided to get a soda. Those who did drink water said that it tasted bad. Apparently it tasted kind of moldy. We ordered unsweetened tea and got sweet tea. We asked the waiter and he told us that it was poured from the unsweet tea container so they probably don't have unsweet. Food portions are small especially for the price. Food tasted fine. I went there with the wife and kids Saturday evening around 9 PM. I thought the service was great and the ambience was very nice. We all enjoyed our meals and had a little bit to bring home as the portions are pretty good. I used to judge Mexican restaurants based on the salsa that comes with the chips, while I don't do that anymore....let me just say I loved the salsa. Something that I recommend for a special occasions is the dessert, The Chocolate Piñata. Wow. If you were just gonna bring your family for dessert and order the piñata I think you'd have a great time. After eating dinner if you order the piñata, you'd probably need about 10 people at the table to finish it. We brought a lot of chocolate home with us. read more

Have you ever wanted a margarita and sangria and not been able to choose between the two? Let me introduce you to "the swirl" - a mix of both. So delicious! If you're feeling extra feisty opt for the Grand Swirl, a margarita/sangria mix with a shot on top. Tonight we just had drinks and the complimentary chips and salsa. That alone is enough to bring me back, but the smell of the food definitely has me intrigued. I will be back to try - maybe with a reservation that time! Everyone wanted Uncle Julios tonight and the wait was long. Our server at the bar was amazing. He checked in on us frequently, had great recommendations, and made sure our drinks never got empty. Went in for drinks last Friday-had the El Jefe margarita. It was very, very good! Spicy, like I like them. We also ordered the guac-which was nothing special. I wouldn't order it again. Ordered queso which was good! The chips and salsa are great! Tonight we went in and had dinner. I had the El Jefe marg again and it was good but not quite as good as Friday but that could have been because I had to wait 20 minutes to get it. We ordered dinner right away but it still took almost an hour to get (and in pretty sure they aren't even operating at 50% capacity yet). The chicken fajitas were okay but nothing special. The steak tacos were great! I will go back but it will be for margaritas and chips and salsa. Ross who was working in the bar on Friday and seemed to be a manager tonight is awesome! This was an absolute disaster. I should have gone by the numerous poor reviews regarding service and food. However, my friends still wanted to give it a shot. Big mistake.. On the menu they had many signature Margaritas. It's specifically stated that some of the drinks were made with lime juice. Not sour mix. I inquired about this specifically with our waiter who insisted that it was lime juice and I said that's what I want. I do not want any mix... He said no problem. Of course, when the drinks came out there was way more liquid in the glass than possible if they had been using lime juice. I inquired about it that it being so big and he cluelessly said, yeah. I think they may have overpoured you. Well. It wasn't very strong at all and I found out shortly thereafter that they indeed were using sour mix, not the lime juice that was stated on the menu. The manager on duty who we spoke with was nice and apologetic, but yet he said that they were aware that the menu said lime juice but they had changed the recipe a few weeks ago and just didn't have time yet to update the menus... That's inexcusable. Change the menus and then change the recipe but don't change the recipe and not change the menus. And furthermore, if you're going to change the recipe and a customer inquires specifically about an ingredient, he or she should have the correct answer. This happened with two of our drinks. As to the food quality, the guacamole was fresh yet extremely bland. Tasting mostly of onion. The cheese dip tasted like any from a can. And the chips had a very foul aftertaste. Definitely need to change the oil. The dark salsa was good. Now it gets better. Already frustrated with the drink experience, I really didn't want to stay and order food because I didn't really trust anything at this point. Well I ordered at the insistence of my companion, and what I ordered was supposedly six jumbo shrimp stuffed with cheese and jalapeno and then wrapped with bacon. These were supposed to come with grilled peppers and onions, etc etc on a skillet similar to how they serve fajitas. When the food was delivered out came three shrimp on a plate. I again asked our clueless waiter, I believe this is supposed to have six shrimp and he quickly said no. I don't think so. So I got a menu out he didn't return for a while and I asked another server for the GM or the manager. He came over and I said do you see what they brought me and do you see what I ordered? This one's on the waiter as well as the kitchen staff. The waiter absolutely knew that I wanted the six shrimp dish because he asked me "Do you just want the shrimp or did you want the one that comes with the steak and chicken?" Well that has a different name so if I wanted that one I would have ordered the name of that entree... Argh. The manager immediately realized that they brought out the completely wrong dish. And once again apologized. But this time I was just so over the place I wanted to leave. You would think after the big screw up with the drinks they would have made sure that the dinner order was correct but they were unable to even bring out the correct meal. My companions meal was correct, however the fish in the fish tacos was overly cooked, probably in the same oil or different oil. Oil that's even more old and had a very foul oil taste. I would not recommend the fish tacos. I would not recommend this place at all. For the prices they are charging, they really need to change their game. It's no wonder on Yelp that over 35% of their reviews are one and two stars. Bad service and bad food. Not a good combination. read more

Really beautiful interior. We had reservations at 5:30, but for people walking in, there was already a wait. However, there is a bar and high tops for walk ins. Our waitress was very good and attentive even though things were really busy. The sangria was some of the best I've had. Margarita wasn't bad either. I got the carnitas tacos. They were good, but I think I should've tried the enchiladas. Chips and salsa was good. Another member of our party had the fajitas and really enjoyed those. Will probably go again read more

Entres: 5 stars, Chips & Salsa: 3 Stars, Service: 4 Stars Our server was nice and friendly, and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time for being made so fresh. The bad thing about the service was that it took us about 20 minutes to get our check, and that the el Jefe margarita is shaken in front of you, and our server did the minimum for that. Would've expected a little bit more for a $15 margarita. The chips and salsa were ok. The chips were a bit greasy and needed salt. The salsas were delicious but the one that was supposed to be spicy had almost no spice. The entrees were phenomenal. Their menu is limited, but everything sounds delicious. I got the chicken tortilla bowl, and it was perfect. Several people at my table got the beef enchiladas and they all loved them. Everyone who got a margarita said it was great. The ambiance is fine. The music could be louder, but the place is decorated pretty cool. It is very dark in there, you will be blinded when you walk out. The portions are good, you won't be left hungry.
