Prime location in Frontenac, well-built and impressive-looking on the outside. The fun stops there. Overly-loud Mexican music. Understaffed. Food arrives but the tortillas and sides are late, meaning you'll sit there chomping on chips while you're food is getting cold. Chicken fajitas were overly salty. Close your eyes and you'll swear you were at Chili's. The one at the airport. Wanted to try the quesadillas but they apparently are "pre-made" so I couldn't get it without onions. For an "authentic" Mexican restaurant, you're better off at Salina's in Chesterfield. I will say this: the Diet Coke was well-mixed and fully carbonated. read more

It's Cinco de Mayo, so I decided to give this place a try. I don't think they were expecting a crowd (don't know why, it's Cinco de Mayo) and there was a line out the door for at least a few hours. The bar stayed packed, so we had to get on the waitlist. We were told it was going to be an hour, but it was only a half hour. The staff was sweet, but seemed overwhelmed. The food was well seasoned, but we got the nachos and I think they may have run out of chips 'cause the toppings were on taco shells that were broken in half...but maybe that was on purpose? I guess it was more than slammed because of the holiday, but I asked for a straw for my drink because it was overflowing, and I also had a shot on top, so...my straw finally came out with my food, which was disappointing. My friend and I split the nachos, and we didn't get any side plates, so stuff was spilling all over the table. We did have to request some, which we got...very small ones. The table next to us was complaining because they got fajitas without any tortillas, and it took them forever to get a couple shots. I wasn't too impressed with them this time around, but I will be going back when it's less busy, and will update my review. read more

Uncle Julio's - Tex-Mex Near Me - Frontenac, Missouri

We were out driving around and ended up in Uncle Julio's parking lot. When we realized they were open, we decided to park and give this place a try. First off...this is the most beautiful restaurant I have ever seen. Every detail is thought out perfectly. It gives you the feeling of suddenly being on vacation and looking for your margarita! It's so open and airy with beautiful lighting. We were seated quickly at a nice little booth. The staff here could not be nicer. Everyone we came into contact with was super friendly, upbeat and professional. It was nice to see people who appeared to really enjoy working here. I ordered the, Mango Passion Lemonade. It was so fresh, fruity and delicious. I highly recommend it. Best lemonade I've ever had. While we looked at the menu, we were served tortilla chips and salsa. The chips are very light, thin and crispy with just a dusting of salt; my favorite kind! The salsa is a fine mince and a bit smoky; really good! It was hard to pick what you wanted from the menu! Everything sounded amazing. I finally decided on the Chicken Fajitas. Hubby got the steak tacos. My Fajitas were outstanding! Everything tasted so fresh! You get rice and beans with the Fajitas, along with guacamole, sour cream, salsa and cheese. Warm fresh made, soft tortillas came in a lidded bowl. They were so tender and tore beautifully! EVERYTHING is so fresh, which made every bite dance on your tongue and make you smile! Hubby said his tacos were excellent! We love this place! If you like Mexican cuisine, you will love this place too! When you find yourself still talking about how good it was...several days later...you know that's the sign of a truly fantastic restaurant! read more

This place has a very cute atmosphere and it's great for pictures. The food was just okay for me. It's a typical Tex-Mex restaurant and I actually would've given this place a higher rating but I didn't like how thin the salsa was, how sweet the meat was (steak and chicken), and how weak the margaritas were. My friends enjoyed it but they like sweet meat. My preference is spicy because I've never experienced a steak that was sweet. This place just wasn't for me. I can get cheaper and food for my taste elsewhere. read more

As a regular at Uncle Julio's the past few experiences have been disappointing. Particularly tonight after poor communication between hostesses and a seating fiasco our server was equally disappointing. After repeated request for straws, silverware, and etc., she was also inconsistent in her menu knowledge. As I decided between fajita chicken quesadillas or pulled chicken quesadillas I specifically asked which was more flavorful to which she strongly encouraged the fajita style. When they arrived it consisted of only chicken and cheese minus any flavor or sautéed onions. When I pointed that out to the server she said menu changed, no longer sautéed with onions because customers complained, and they weren't as flavorful. Although displeased, we graciously paid our bill and declined a to go box. Upon leaving I shared my pictures and displeasure with the manager before sharing this review and she said they probably forgot the onions and the server was definitely wrong. "Sorry" was her response. This experience, along with previous poor experiences, compelled me to share this since direct feedback to the management staff was not appreciated. read more

We have had a hard time finding good Tex-Mex away from Texas. After years away from Pappasittos and Lupe Tortilla, we finally found a place that has comparable fajitas. Good salsa. Good chips. Homemade Tortillas. Good skirt steak. Grilled chicken with Mexican Butter. Spot on for us. House Don Julio Gold Margarita was delicious also. Service was attentive - not too over bearing. We will be back. read more

I know a lot of restaurants are having issues getting/keeping a full staff. After reading other reviews I took my family, party of five to Uncle Julio's, Saturday, late afternoon with a reservation. We were seated shortly after arriving and our server started off great. And then... After ordering drinks and table side guacamole, which I would recommend...it was delicious, we waited 20 minutes and had to wave down our server to order. Food came out "burn your mouth hot" so definitely fresh. But there was a hair on my plate, one of the cocktail glasses had a huge crack in it, extra tortillas never arrived. (Two tortillas served per fajita order which is not enough.) so no one finished their meal waiting for tortillas. The manager comped our meal which was more than generous but this restaurant should be in their honeymoon phase still. We had a lot of issues for one table. Would have overlooked one thing but they just kept getting worse. That being said/written, the drinks were amazing. I ordered a mango margarita which was not on the menu and made with fresh purée. Amazing! Everyone raves about their drinks. Hopefully they will work out their kinks but I'm not sure we are willing to try them again. read more

We made a reservation was there 30 mins early thought we'd get in early but nope we had to wait till 12:30 people where coming in so fast and getting seated come to find out walk-ins are welcome if we knew that would of never made reservations. Our for was great. Myself and my future daughter bought the chicken and steak fajitas for two man and we get a lot. Future wife ordered bacon wrapped shrimp with jalapeños and jack cheese. Oh my goodness they were delicious. We also ordered a pineapple margarita which was very delightful. We may not eat there again but we might just do a carry out. read more

Sorry but this was bad. I can deal with not hot fajitas my wife got. The guac and queso was fine. The hard tacos while passable literally had unseasoned ground beef. Then there were my beef enchiladas. Same plain ground beef wrapped with raw corn tortillas. Covered in cheese sauce and some shredded cheese. Not baked or heated in any way. Cant say I will give the place another try. read more

I really wish I had a better review to give. To be fair I'll start with they waived some of the food charge and therefor they got 2 stars instead of 1, as well as for the reason they had negro modelo. I've been here twice, both were not good. The first visit- I usually go to a close by Tex-mex who were close at the time so I went to uncle Julio with my lady for margaritas and snacks. Took their original margarita and the special 3 tequila one (about $14, regular-small size glass ) both were disappointing, was very sweet, tasted like it wasn't fresh made but from a mix, although they stated it was not ‍ we ended up leaving without finishing our drinks or ordering food. Second time/ today- went there for a family celebration, I didn't choose the place but was open minded to try their food as I heard some good reviews. Ordered fish taco x3, chicken fajita soft taco for my lady and kids size steak fajita for the 11 yo kid. The order was messed up, they showed up about 3 times with the wrong food, the server simply didn't pay attention to what we asked for. I was ok with some of the mistakes (wrong guacamole, we ordered fresh table-side made, got the small pre made guacamole but it was decent.. ) until I got my fish tacos, I let my son take the first bite as he didn't receive his food yet (he received it after about 30 minutes late, when the rest of the table was finished eating) he spited the food out and said eww! I was surprised as he love fish, and fish taco but he said its cold and disgusting. I took a bite, the "grilled fish" was cold in the middle, under cooked, couldn't bite it easily and it won't flake. Seam like it was thrown frozen on the grill. The corn tortilla was dry and breaking into small pieces. I'm going to attach a photo and I wish you could see from it as it looks fine, but it wasn't good. I will say the chili beans and rice it came with were good! Finally my lady got the chicken taco, they were wrong again and she received hard shell over the soft asked for, fajita it wasn't just small chicken cubes with some lettes tomato and cheese on it. She asked the server if it's the fajita ones and received an answer of yes! Its cut in cubes so its fajita. The taco shell tasted stale and she couldn't eat more than half. Again, rice and beans were good, just ok tho. Finally after long wait my kid got his plate, his steak rice and beans were good, but didn't arrive with tortillas although it was listed on the menu, no veggies either ‍ not sure what they call it fajitas for. The manager came to speak with us after they returned to the kitchen 3-4 times with the wrong orders, I asked her to see the fish we received and explained the situation, her response was : I'll waive your food. I said I will pay for it I'm just afraid of getting sick from the uncooked fish, and she said: "they should know by now how to cook it" I mean, really????? This made me gag. Bottom line - spicy margarita was good, guacamole is decent (specify what type you want as they messed it up as well) chips are thin and good if you like thin ones. Food is a no for me. I ended up feeling so sick, I will not return. read more

Not like any Mexican restaurant I have patronized in St. Louis. My fajitas consisted of a couple of dry strips of skirted steak and chicken with some peeled onions and peppers thrown in for ambiance I guess. The restaurant decor lent itself more towards European than anything close to Mexican. The service was friendly but inefficient, waited at least 20 minutes for the check. Both my first and last trip to Uncle Julios will be one in the same. Oh, not to forget the appetizer, chicken tortilla soup, bring along a fire extinguisher! Back to our many other excellent Mexican restaurants we have in St. Louis!!! read more

Uncle Julio's is a great spot for Mexican. Beautiful and roomy standalone building with a great bar and fantastic patio. The mango jalapeño margarita was fantastic as was the tres amigos marg. The food was decent but pretty standard Tex mex chain fare. Nothing too exciting or unique. Portions were a little small for the price but plenty filling. Gets busy so make a reservation, go early or late, or expect to wait a little bit. I will def go back for the margaritas! read more

Excellent cocktails!!!!! A true must try. Food was good as well. Nice choice selection. Ask about the buy 1fajitas take 1 home. I had a spicy grapefruit margarita. Wow. The grapefruit had been toasted. It was like heaven on the palate. 4 stars because the service was meh. Talked to my boss who went as well and she agreed with service not being the fastest. I am sure they were still getting their groove after opening. I will revisit the restaurant at a later date. I highly recommend. It's a nice spin and fresh take on food options. read more

Came in without a reservation after leaving another restaurant with questionable service. We had about a 25 minute wait which was in-line with what we were told. We were seated in a nice booth in the bar. Not too noisy, just right. We had great service for drinks, the blood orange margaritas and house margaritas were very good. Our group had beef fajitas, chicken enchiladas and steak fajita bowls. All were very good. The waiter was attentive without being obnoxious. Gave us good suggestions and was friendly. The staff all appeared to be friendly and helpful. Made a good decision changing restaurants. read more

Food here is great! Service needs some work. All the way from the managers to the servers. Had a reservation at 5:15pm. Walked in at 5:12 and the manager immediately asked if we wanted to sit at a bar high top. Huh? That's what is offered when nothing else is available. Why did I make a reservation if I was going to be seated at the bar? After settling for a bar booth, the hostess showed us to a dirty booth table in the corner. I asked her to have someone wipe it over for us....crickets. Once our server came (she was good) I told her the table was dirty and then she came back and wiped it off. She did a good job except I had to ask three times for silverware during our meal. Julio's gold Margaritas were excellent. I would eat there again due to the food be so tasty. read more

The interior is beautiful. The presentation of the food and drinks are great. The food lacks flavor. The salsa they bring to the table with the chips is so watery that it doesn't stay on the chip. I like my salsa to have a kick to it, but the salsa taste more like tomato paste. The Mexican rice served with the entree had some flavor as well as the honey habanero shrimp. The tacos were very bland. It's hard to mess up a taco since it's such a simple meal but the meat didn't have any seasoning to it. Not a terrible place. Would probably come back for drinks but not to eat. read more

The first time i came here with my family it was definitely a 5 star. Food was seasoned right. Good portions and tasty food. The last time I came i brought a friend bragging about the place and then turned embarrassing. The restaurant failed me and made me look bad. He had ordered carne asada fajitas. They served him a cast iron with literally 3-4 small pieces of cut up meat and onions no green peppers. Guacamole and pico. Nothing else. When manager asked if we we're doing good. He mentioned that the portions were skimpy and he noticed he ordered carne asada so he brought him back a whole piece of meat. Big difference. The chips were cold. I want to come back but some things need to be changed. read more

I visited Uncle Julio's for lunch on 6/5/23 to celebrate 2 birthdays. there were 4 of us, and 2 of us were apprehensive about the restaurant after reading reviews about poor service. WOW......what a GREAT experience and fabulous & fun service!!!! The food does not deserve 5 stars, as it is good, but nothing special. The service and atmosphere were delightful, and to top it off.......a huge chocolate pinata was brought out for the 2 birthday girls! We had a great time, and we will all definitely return. The chips and salsa were delicious and fresh, and the selection of food and drinks is more than adequate. Prices are slightly higher than the average Mexican restaurant, but it is more upscale and not fast-food! read more

Sadly this restaurant will be doomed. Atmosphere is amazing but management, service, and cleanliness is severely lacking.

This place was the best Mexican I've had in the Midwest. The chips were thin and crispy (just the right amount of saltiness). The salsa was the perfect amount of spice. The guacamole was fresh. You could tell the tortilla was homemade. The steak and chicken was full of flavor and very juicy. To top it of the server was top notch. Will definitely visit again. read more

First time in since the new menu in November. This was the only place in the Stl area to find TexMex. Now they have remove the basics such as chili con carne for the enchiladas. They went to the red sauce which is what STL mexican restaurants serve at $5 a plate less. The rice was bland. The chips used to be really good. They are bland. The frozen margarita was good, but that was really it. Sad. I used to go here when I lived in Texas. With these changes, they will not last long. Sad. read more

While the waitstaff was very helpful and professional, the wait for the food of 45 minutes was too long. There were very few tables on a Monday a bit before 5. When the food arrived, my wife's enchiladas were inedible as the salt content was off the chart. They replaced the order, the same issue persisted. My Carne Asada was virtually raw. I didn't have the heart to send it back for fear of being "one of those customers ". The appearance of the establishment is questionable as they removed the Covid barriers, but left the caulk and 2x4's on top of the booths. As I would consider this a higher end restaurant, I would expect a cleaner and better detailed store. They did comp my wife's meal without asking. As it was not the waitress' fault I wanted to tip her based on both meals. When the check / computer was presented, it added the recommended tip if 20%. I did not see an alternative option other than to round up the tip. I do not care for "push" tipping and I generally tip above the normal amount. When pushed, I become disenfranchised. The net result was a nice waitress getting less than she deserved. Certain she could get a better job elsewhere and we won't be back. read more
