As soon as you step inside the restaurant, you are greeted with a savory smell of sizzling food. It just doesnt smell good, it taste good as well. We came for the chocolate piñata for my birthday. It was a fun experience smashing the piñata made of a ball of dark chocolate, loaded with churros, pineapple and strawberry. It was a bit pricey, i am not convinced it should be worth $30 but for the experience, it is nice to try it at least once specially when it is during a special occasion. They write customized greetings according to your event so don't hesitate to ask your server to put greetings such as "happy birthday" or "happy anniversary". The chocolate taste premium, the churros are the best, the pineapple tasted sweet and the strawberries are really fresh so we were happy with that. For the meal, we ordered chicken and steak fajitas. The serving is good enough for two people to share. Quality of meat is really good. Both steak and chicken are full of flavor. Our server, Alexis was also good and made sure we were well taken care of. This restaurant is located within a mall but has it's own entrance from the parking lot so parking is not an issue. I don't know . . . . maybe I've become a Mexican food and Tex-Mex snob but I've had enough to know when I'm bored by a meal. I'm far from saying it was bad experience but I would call I a non-experience and for meals averaging in the $20ish range something on the plate better impress me. Honestly the most memorable part of the meal was the salsa that came with the chips. It would have been great if this, or a hotter version also came automatically with the meal. (The beans were good too.) I understand that they specialize I fajitas so if I ever come back I'll give those a try. Technically we decided to come here because a few on our group were in the mood for margaritas . . . . and they were pleased with them. I am not big on margaritas though but do enjoy tequila so I thought I'd try their take on a tequila old fashioned. To me, no matter what else you put in an old fashioned, if it doesn't come in a tumble with a huge crystal clear block of ice it's not an old fashioned. This had neither and just tasted like straigh tequila. I like straight tequila but was looking forward to what was described and was disappointed in the execution. Great food and great service by Rachael at the bar. Had the happy hour margaritas they pretty good, not overly sweet. Ordered the Guadalajara fajita with bacon wrapped shrimp, steak and chicken. We went on Cinco De Mayo and eventhough they were packed and very busy., the service was amazing. We had a wait of about an hour and 45 mins. And it was just that almost to the minute. We got seated and our waiter (Nathan) came over about 5 minutes later. Got our drink order and then our appetizer order. Drinks and Apps came out about 10 - 15 minutes layer, and both were delicious. I ordered the mezcal margarita and my boyfriend ordered the Swirl. Our food arrived about 20 minutes later, I got the street tacos a d my boyfriend got the soft tacos. They were both amazing as well. I came in today because I wanted to celebrate Cinco De Mayo. We arrived about noon and it was packed. The host told me the Wait was over 45 minutes and encouraged me to look at the bar /High stools. I found a table near the bar towards the back and it was cool. Jose was very attentive and provided excellent customer service. He came to check on us and made sure there was no dairy in my meal. The managers kept walking around to check on the diners and were friendly. My shrimp and steak fajitas were very tasty. I had two strawberry margaritas and it was a good balance of fruit , juice and alcohol. Since its near the mall, I was expecting more fun!!!! I took off stars because We came here today because it was Cinco De Mayo and I assumed there would be drink and food specials. It's a Mexican restaurant lol. I have always been a fan of Uncle Julio's. Tried out the one in Columbia, but we made sure to go earlier on a weekday because it is otherwise just way too crowded and way too loud. Our bartender was amazing, I'm so bummed I forgot her name. I love the swirl drink, it is my primary reason for ever going to an Uncle Julio's! I tried the tacos this time around because I wasn't particularly starving. The tacos are huge, probably could have just had one and been content. They were tasty, I got a chicken taco that had very well-cooked chicken and an ample amount of chicken inside the taco. It had a little bit too much cheese (but cheese is so good), but I'd order it again. I also ordered a ground beef taco, and loved the flavoring on the meat. I definitely will continue to avoid this place on a weekend night, but when it's quieter it is lovely. read more

Went here for the first time for lunch and had a great experience thanks to our wonderful waiter, Mason. I was going to order a taco salad to be healthy and when he found out that I'm a vegetarian, he suggested I get the fajitas which I said I didn't want because I didn't want to eat any tortillas or rice. So he said he could give me lettuce wraps instead of tortillas and then julienned vegetables as a side instead of rice and beans, so I said yes and was very happy with my meal! It was still extremely filling and the sour cream and guacamole that came with it was delicious. Seated at 620p, 15 min later ordered drinks & multiple appetizers. Received only most (not all) of our appetizers, but no drink. We reminded staff 3x's that we never received the remaining appetizers as she arrived to apologize because we didn't have drinks yet since the bar too is behind. As one of the staff, a thin gentleman, dropped off a missing item I reminded them that we were also still missing table guac. He quickly replied, tell someone else (...tell your server), instead of carrying the message to whomever he preferred to receive it (wtf!?). Once our waitress returned to take entrée orders I said, if the other appetizers aren't out now then cancel'm. With confidence, the staff said it would be def be out before entree's.... as they seamed to rush to the kitchen. Returning some time later to clean up space for entrées....still nothing. So those of us still waiting on appetizers AND something to drink over an hour into the seating, sat around staring at empty chip / salsa bowls while 50% of our party tended to by a different waitress... enjoyed their food. (kudos to the more successful waitress helping that 50% of guests btw) Appetizers still missing, we receive our drink 50% correct... requiring an extra trip to have it made correctly. Ordering the salmon dinner listed with various sides & accouterments... I specifically pointed to the menu asking the waitress, as she read, to confirm they would come with the meal. (since there were other sections that offered 'upon request'). The waitress confirmed it all came with mine and even Jovially referenced the guac to be delivered with the entrée, of which was some of the missing appetizers now cancelled. (ha ha) I also asked to switch rice & black beans, for refried & black beans. Surprise, not surprised at this point, the entree delivery was also 50% missing. as I received a 6 ounce fillet of Atlantic salmon and a tablespoon of pico in the center of a big plate.... missing ALL sides & accoutrements (black beans, onions, peppers, guac & the refried bean swap requested). It took THREE more trips to get the rest of my order correct, not to mention every other person's entrée missing (at least) one thing. Unfortunately those three trips were at the cost of others' waiting for the same staffs attention to get their missing items so they could start eating too. More trips, because everybody had to individually keep asking for what they specifically ordered i.e 5 different fajita platters and zero wraps delivered to the table). being a birthday celebration, I had ordered THREE of the larger $35 chocolate lovers piñatas. Not being the first time I've had them, I figured it a good choice given 16 people across all 4 tables. What we received was absolutely NOT the larger, more expensive version, paid for!!!! they were the smaller basic desserts, with maybe four bites of churro, three strawberries,, 4 bites of pineapple in each & only 3 corners of small whip dollops on the board..... absolutely not the $35 chocolate lovers dessert version that I specifically ordered, verbally confirmed the larger of twice, and paid for. (i.e see the difference in any posted photos). Beyond extremely disappointing at this location!! there wasn't one aspect of our entire evening that wasn't riddled with inattentive mistakes with service, being understaffed, presentation and price. FFwd to time to pay the check, and STILL had to have a nonexistent appetizer, one never even ordered, removed from the check. 4 tabletops @ 16ppl total, and I don't think one dish came out complete the first trip as per the menu OR order. Service: incredibly inattentive, untrained, and very understaffed. it should NOT take 40 min to receive a basic margarita w/a shot of Grand Marnier, Or take 2.5+ hours from seating to check to turn around a table. our waitress checking our table no more than every 30+ minutes is absolutely ridiculous. (in any restaurant for almost 3 hours uhg, bad experience) Ambiance: 67 degrees in our area, and far too dark past 7pm. Many people had to go to their cars to get jackets. Eating in restaurants at least 4x a wk, this uncle Julio's experience in Columbia Maryland is the worst i've experienced in many years of restaurant dining, and will be my last at this location. The Annapolis location is by far much much better service, and professionalism! The food flavor being equal to Annapolis, absolutely every other aspect was a total fail in Columbia. read more

Yummy place! I went there during Black Friday and there was no wait. Tons of tables and enough servers so you aren't waiting a long time for your meal. The restaurant is a bit dark so it is hard to read your menu but overall wonderful food. Our server was attentive and even allowed us to split the check when we had 4 people on separate bills. My only negative review is that the chips for the salsa are very thin and breakable. We order guacamole and cheese dip for the table and had a lot of trouble eating it with the chips we had. Sadly, I have to say I wasn't expecting to have that great of an experience at Uncle Julio's. My husband, myself and two other couples had a reservation and were seated immediately upon arrival. Our drink orders were taken and all was fine until one of our drinks came out looking completely different from what was pictured. Furthermore, we saw other tables with the exact same drink and none looked like what we received. Not only did it come in a different glass, but the drink didn't even look the same. It was pretty pathetic if you ask me. When we asked the waitress why the drink looked so different, she said the bar ran out of glasses so had to improvise. She offered to take the drink back and have the bar remake it. Before leaving, she also took our food orders. A few minutes passed and she returned to let my friend know they were making her drink, but sadly they ran out of chicken enchiladas which is what she ordered. At that point, we made a decision to cancel the food order and head to a neighboring restaurant. I am OBSESSED with Uncle Julio's! I was so excited when I saw they were building a location at The Mall in Columbia. They've been open a few weeks now and I purposefully waited to try this location so they could work out the new business kinks. AMBIANCE: Beautiful, dark, rustic interior. SERVICE: Make a reservation if you don't want to wait +1 hour to be seated. I made one via Open Table and was seated within 5 minutes. Our server Jose was very personable and gave great recommendations (thumbs up for the Tres Amigos!). FOOD: Complimentary chips and salsa. Table side guacamole seems to be a hot commodity. Chips are on the thinner side and break easily when dipping in guac or queso. The platters are the way to go if you want a variety of dishes. I definitely recommend the Juanita's Platter! Shoutout to our local community heroes! We were happy to have an excellent lunch date in Columbia. Jose was our Uncle Julio's ambassador today. He served as the bartender and he took care of our area of the restaurant. Wow! Not only did he give us excellent service taking our orders, but he kept us happy with yummy drinks! Top of the line tequila and a gorgeous seasonal watermelon margarita! He gave me an extra piece of juicy watermelon! The venue is beautiful, clean, and comfy. Almost like a mini vacation vibe. Beautiful entrees and large portions! Guacamole in a stone pot, Queso blanco, and refreshing salsas. Thin warm tortilla chips are plentiful. Tex Mex for the hubby. The hatch green chili recipe was on point. And I had my favorite enchiladas with a perfect cheese pull!! I'm picky with rice and beans, so by my humble opinion, these was authenticity on a plate! Too full for desserts, but I have the rest of my enchiladas for later! Yum!! I got to take some pics with Jose and with a group of Marines having lunch. One of the best fajita combos I've ever had! My husband and I shared the steak and chicken fajitas for two. I think we could have gone for one order and shared. It was huge and delicious. The meat had a wonderful char grilled flavor. It came with rice and beans and fajitas toppings and tortillas. The chips and salsa was also really delicious. While we made a reservation for 530pm on a rainy Thursday evening, it was not necessary. By the time we left around 615pm, the place was bustling and reservations would've been good. We were provided chips and smokey salsa upon seating. We split the chicken and steak fajitas (single order) - they were very good. They are served with 5 tortillas, steak, chicken, sauteed onions/peppers, guac, sour cream, lettuce, rice, and beans. My only gripe was the dry rice and flavorless beans, the rest was good. There was plenty to share between two people for the single order (they offer a double order as well). Overall, I found the menu on the expensive side for the mall - other than dips for the free chips, no apps under $10 and their margs were still pricey even at happy hour. We would have gotten at least one of each. Our service was excellent and they even kept my water cup full - not a small feat! We did see some people get (I think) table side guac made. Just went to Uncle Julio's for dinner. My husband suggested it as we live less that 3 minutes away from this new Columbia location and love the Bethesda location from a few years ago when we were dating. Bottom line - this location is just as good, if not better, than the other location we used to frequent. The restaurant ambiance is on point, the music is great, and the servers are professional. We had a great server, Imani, who was super friendly, helpful, and on it. There was a little mixup with our order but the corporate trainer was quick to make up for it, and our server made sure there wasn't anything else we needed.
