I just stopped at the Uncle Ed's In Ann Arbor on Stadium. They checked my oil and said it was clean and didn't need changing even showed me the dip stick. Then they checked my tires and and lights and said I could go, no charge. I've never received that kind of honesty from a business and was very impressed. Avoid this place at all costs. One guy working here, took a long time, none of the standard checks -- just him. I could go on with how much worse the service was than any other time I used Uncle Ed. But that isn't the issue. The issue is that he neglected to tighten the oil drum plug and when I went over a pothole, it fell off. The engine locked before I could get it to mechanics and now I have $5000 bill to replace the whole engine. My mechanic says the screw wasn't stripped, it just wasn't tightened adequately and after a few weeks and a hard shock, it came off. TLDR: I'm never going to Uncle Ed's again. No more cheap oil changes. Consider this your warning. read more

I try not to go here, but I was suckered in by the "$29.99 Oil Change Special." When I pulled in, they didn't mention the special but showed me an oil change menu starting at $50. When I asked for the special, he said, "Ok" and someone started working on the oil. After a few minutes, he said, "That'll be $39." I said, "Oh, is that like taxes and fees or something?" and he said, "Yes, plus you need an upgraded oil filter." I said, "Can I get just the regular filter?" And he said, "No, this needs a different one." Really? I don't have a fancy car; I have a late model of one of those ubiquitous, cheap, cars made in Korea with a base price of $20k. (What I should have asked was, "What brands and models DON'T need an upgraded filter?" but I didn't think of it.) Anyway, it sounds like I made off easy relative to some other upcharges people have experienced. Not a lot of other upselling this time, but last time I had JUST put on new wiper blades and the guy was like, "Can you spray your windshield?" and immediately said, "Looks like they're streaking!" and I was like, "Nope they're brand new." Next time I'll be going back to Valvoline; they've been great... and about the same price as this "special" when you use one of their email coupons. I've always gotten the feeling the guys are competent, but the upselling and surprise charges always leave a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I loved coming here! It's so quick, in and out and I didn't even have to get out of my car. I went to the one on Washtenaw Ave in Ann Arbor. I know others say they offer lots of other things along with the oil change, but I knew those things actually did need to be replaced and I felt they were very honest and not salesy or pushy when they asked. There's nothing wrong about asking. I have NEVER had such a fast oil change before and such good customer service. Well worth the $50 plus for it! (Rather than getting out of my car, handing keys over to some random person, waiting around for 30 min- 1 hour) cause that's my only car. Wish I could give zero stars! Went in for an oil change because they were running a deal. They charged me for 6 liters of new oil. I drove it 500 miles, my oil light came on and the car was acting weird. I had my husband check it out, we had ZERO oil in the car! With that being the car I use to travel out of state for, this is a safety issue. Husband called the shop and all the guy had to say was yeah we've had cars burn through oil that fast. Same story as the others: You pull in for a simple oil change, which should be less than $25 by the going rate (Victory Lane down the road), and they hard-sell you everything under the sun that they think they can get away with, or just add stuff on and consider it "basic." My husband got soaked for $84 on a 2013 car--the first oil change for that vehicle. Yes, $84 *with* a "coupon." I'm not sure whether it is the Uncle Ed's business model I object to, or if it's the particular location, but I do know this: I don't like this place. I happened to get off work a little early in the afternoon, so I figured I'd swing by somewhere to get an oil change before closing time. After discovering that another place required an appointment, I pulled into Uncle Ed's. I had always avoided it, though I'm unsure as to why I had; something about the aesthetic just didn't appeal to me on some base level. Turns out, I was justified. You pull your car into one of the building's slots (for lack of a better term. Bays, perhaps?), and, as others have mentioned, they immediately try to sell you on anything and everything your car might need that can be inserted or installed in a minute or two. "'Premium' oil change? Wiper blades? Your upper rear brake light is out (it wasn't), do you want a new one? Power steering fluid? Oil system cleaner?" No, thank you. I will continue to sit in my car and avoid eye contact with you eager-yet-disinterested trio of novice grease monklings. Alright, well, they managed to get me on the oil system cleaner, but that's just because I'm a pushover. I recognize that this product was likely wholly unnecessary. A stronger man would not relent, and should not. So, after several minutes of various checks and turning my car on and off at their command, I'm met with the bill: $60, and that's just for the most basic of oils and a bit of whatever liquefied gold additive they must have used to cleanse the mechanism. And I had a coupon. Whatever, just let me drive the hell out of here. read more

Asked for the cheapest oil change and they took that as a sign to ignore me. I pulled into the right stall and they proceeded to serve three people ahead of me while I waited. You go there for a simple oil change and they will try to end you up with hundreds of dollars for premium oils and stupid inspections, which means nothing. DO NOT GO HERE- there is literally 3 other places that are within half a mile that will be infinitely better to go to. they include Quick lube, Midas, or Speedy. Literally any other location will be a better experience. I've worked with uncle ed's in other locations such as the royal oak one and they were helpful and reasonable on the hard sell there. This location is one of the worst franchises of Uncle Ed's. Even with my 15 dollar subscription discount as a member, I was told on every occasion that my 8 year old toyota Rav4 required their top of the line synthetic oil because it said 5w-20 on the top and how using conventional oil will destroy my car. This is blatantly untrue and I confirmed with multiple other mechanics, 5w-20 is simply a designation of viscosity range for the oil. They use scare tactics saying how everything in the car needs to be replaced. They offered to do a transmission oil change simply because my car was "old and it will destroy your engine if you don't do it every 5 years." Based on their abilities to tell me how my oil designation is, I would never trust my car's transmission oil change to these guys, would definitely recommend going back to the dealer or more trusted location to do them. read more

SCAMMERS Yikes, I will not be coming back. I can deal with a little up-selling (it's to be expected at these types of places) but the constant, non-stop, up-selling was so unappealing I was tempted to ask them to stop and then drive off. Also, the manager that was working that day was the one helping me, he was so intense and awkward it made the experience horribly painful. They wanted to charge me $9 a tire to put nitrogen in them and $109 for a power steering fluid cleaning. They said it is required every 15,000 miles. I never write reviews but I wanted to reiterate what some of the other reviews said about them using scare tactics to talk you into (over-priced) stuff that you don't need! Sure they sound friendly, but that doesn't mean they don't try to scam you into all kinds of expensive un-necessary services. The oil change was only supposed to be $55, which was high to begin with, but I was in a hurry and I didn't go to my usual place where it's $28 for an oil change. NOT WORTH the convenience of paying extra just because it was on my way as I refused all the scare tactics and still somehow my bill was $89 by the end. Could have easily been $250+ if I bought into their B.S. extra crap. DO NOT GO THERE! I've paid from $25-$35 for very decent oil changes where they also top off you washer fluid and stuff like that. If I could give this place zero stars I would. I wish that I had read the other reviews before I stopped in for my car's first oil change. It would have saved me a ton of grief. But I was nearby and it was convenient. Little did I know... Like I said, it was my vehicle's first oil change. They tried to up-sell me on a few items (like every Uncle Ed's tries to do), but since the car is pretty much new there wasn't much they could try. Besides, my stock answer is "no" every time anyway. They changed the oil and off I went. A few days later I noticed some oil drips on my driveway. I checked underneath, and sure enough, it's leaking a bit of oil. So I take the car back to have them fix the problem. The assistant manager assures me that she will handle the situation herself and make sure everything is taken care of. They have me run the car for a few minutes to see where the oil is leaking, and notice it's coming from the drain plug gasket. I figure they'll do another quick oil change and I'll be out in a few minutes. Nope. She goes down into the bay and - get this - she attempts to remove the drain plug and then somehow magically hold back the hot, pressurized oil with a shop rag while she thinks she can swap out the plug gasket with her other hand. WTF?!?! I hear screams from under my car as she takes an unexpected hot oil bath. Meanwhile, another customer drives up and asks if there's time for him to get his oil changed (it was about 15 minutes before closing at this point). They tell him sure thing. I figure they are going to get my car done first, since I was already there for about 20 minutes at that point. Another nope. They work on his car instead. Eventually, the assistant manager comes back and tells me that indeed the drain plug gasket was warped and she is going to replace it and get me on my way. She hoses off the oil that has now splashed all over the underside of my car, gets a new plug gasket installed (more on this in a bit; I know, the suspense is killing you!), comes up and tells me to go ahead and start to car. I was only half paying attention during the whole operation, passing the time surfing the web on my phone while waiting for them to finish. So I start the car, and then instantly realize that I don't recall seeing her put any oil back in the engine! I immediately shut off the car, which fortunately only ran for a split second. ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME!!!! You're an assistant manager at an oil change shop and you forget to put oil in my car before telling me to start the engine?! She puts fresh oil in and finally, after being there a little over an hour, I drive off. At home, I put some cardboard under my car, knowing that some of the residual oil that splashed around is still going to drip. A few days go by and I notice that it is still leaking oil. Fresh oil, not anything that had dripped down from before. By this point I'm furious. So I take the car to the dealership, thinking that maybe the morons at Uncle Ed's cross threaded the drain plug and then forced it back into the oil pan. Thankfully, it was nothing that serious: Two idiots at Uncle Ed's had changed the oil but never bothered to change the gasket on the drain plug, despite the second idiot (the assistant manager) telling me that she had. They had inadvertently stacked two gaskets and that was causing the leak. Now I have to go and scrub the oil stains off of my driveway. That's after I go pick up my car from the dealer this afternoon, and after I have to pay them for the oil change they needed to do in order to remove the plug and put on a new gasket. Meanwhile, assistant manager moron told me she is about to get her own store in Livonia. I feel sorry for Livonia car owners, but at least she will be out out of Ann Arbor. Uncle Ed's, if you are reading this, know two things: 1) You have morons working for you (but I suspect you already know this), and 2) you are about to get a bill for the oil change I had to get at the dealer to correct what your employees couldn't do. read more

I can't suggest them highly enough. These guys are great. They are always respectful, courteous, and friendly. Like the sort of service our parents remember from "back when" and you just never see anywhere anymore. I'm always shown what I am getting, suggestions on what I need but they NEVER push if I say I can't afford it right now, and they look for coupons if we need one. I went in once with a bent front bumper I hadn't been able to get repaired. Before I left one of the techs took the time to bend it back into place closer so I was able to drive more safely. I never asked and they didn't expect payment. It was just a "make things easier for you". And it wasn't the first time they've pointed things out that aren't part of what they have to do, and suggest places you could get these other things done. I don't know where these others are going.. but I'm amazed if it's the same place. The one I go to is on Washtenaw across from Whole Foods and Barnes and Noble Books. I'm blown away by their service and professionalism. We take both cars there and have for the last 2 years. If I could give them 6 stars I would.... read more

Been bringing my cars here for years, but was disappointed when I sent my 16 year old son over for a $69.99 oil change and he came back with a $240.42 receipt. OK, the $29.99 headlamp and $11.99 lightbulb replacements were necessary...but the recommendation to perform a $99.99 engine cleaning service and $19.99 fuel system cleaner was not only unnecessary, but completely unsupported by any data the service technician would have had access to. (I actually had the engine serviced by the dealer quite recently). All the technician knew is that after 145,000 miles Uncle Ed's hadn't previously performed this service. On the bright side, It cost me $130 to learn this establishment is trustworthy only when dealing with an informed consumer. Until proven otherwise, you might want to presume this establishment's sales ethics will be somewhat...greasy. read more

I'd gotten used to the hard sell upselling they do, but it has gotten intolerable. I usually take our cars in but my wife took hers in today. They lied to her (claiming her car needs synthetic oil and that that is what we've gotten in the past, neither of which is true), pushed her to replace the air in her tires with nitrogen, claimed her battery was in such poor shape that it would be surprising if the car started (I'll get it checked, but I have no reason to believe them). They tried to get her to replace the inside air filters and then didn't bother to clean them when she turned that down and they already had them out. This Uncle Ed's is very conveniently located for me, and I really used to enjoy/appreciate the courteous/professional service. But their upselling, and I guess that's their job to upsell services, has gotten too aggressive. That, coupled with the attitude you get when you don't purchase an additional service, makes me not want to return to this location again. My car has 25000 miles on it, so I know it doesn't need an engine flush. Suggesting that assumes I am a clueless consumer, and it's a blatant attempt to take advantage of me. I've always came to this shop as a passenger while someone else got their car worked on, and was extremely impressed with their services, outstanding attitudes, and knowledgeable work ethic. After being sold by just observing, I finally decided to have my own car done for the first time yesterday, and did not leave disappointed. Everyone who works here is super friendly, and are always looking for ways to help. They don't peer pressure you to buy more than what you want like most shops, but at the same time make sure to check out everything and go above and beyond what any other place I've gone to has. The environment is relaxed, and as a woman I feel comfortable here (which I think is extremely important) They've always got good music playing and a welcoming smiling face. Justin, the store manager is absolutely awesome, too. Not to mention the great prices and discounts. They even called the next day after my visit to thank me for my service. I'd highly recommend them to anyone who needs absolutely anything done to their vehicle! Never going back to anywhere else. read more

I don't expect an oil shop to know everything about my car. I do expect them to know the difference between a locked/unlocked glove compartment, a latched/unlatched hood, and a clean/dirty rag. They damaged my car and blamed it on me. Details: They broke the latch to my glove compartment and they stated I should have known they were having trouble opening the glove box. I was busy answering another employee's questions. They provided no solution, but rather blamed it on me. They failed to close my hood properly, so it popped up on the freeway, and they blamed that on me, too. I explained this is a hazard to me and other motorists, and they said "Well, what do you want me to do about it?" I answered their question by saying: "Your company could reexamine your standard procedures to help make sure this doesn't happen again." They said "Don't you tell me how to do my job." I very specifically shifted the fault away from the employee and towards the larger organization. Perhaps this employee is in charge of company-wide procedures, but I find this unlikely. They cleaned my windshield with a dirty rag. How do I know it was dirty? One employee cleaned my windshield meticulously with a rag, then set the rag inside the hood of my car, right on top of the dirt and grime. This now dirty, grimy rag was picked up by another employee and used to wipe my windshield again. They complained that my windshield was too dirty for them to clean. Sure, using a dirty rag on a clean windshield will make it dirty, and in this case, scratched. Sure, I can handle their domineering sales tactics. I cannot tolerate them damaging my car and blaming it on me. If you do go here, be very, very cautious. Don't let them clean your windshield. Check your hood afterwards to make sure it's closed. Be prepared to have multiple employees try to pressure you into added products and services. Double check your bill to make sure no mysterious charges appear like "pre-paid oil change" without your knowledge. read more

I was SO surprised to find so many bad reviews. I've been going here, and only here, since 2011 and every single time they have given me no less than perfection. Yeah, they do try to upsell, but it's a business, like any other. Every business does this. They try to upsell every time I'm there too but they explain the difference to me, SHOW me why this or that needs replaced, and they don't push me on anything I don't want. I like that they go through the whole vehicle and check every little thing, because I sure don't do that as often as I should. For example, the time before last I chose to get the most expensive oil for my boyfriend's car since he never changes the oil and goes over by thousands and thousands of miles before getting one. Thankfully, Uncle Ed's had this oil, while yes more expensive, has been a lifesaver for his car. I just went back in recently and they showed me the difference the expensive oil made and it outlasted the standard oil BY FAR. I know enough about cars, considering my step dad and step brother build drag race cars and bikes, and I know Uncle Ed's hasn't tried screwing me by getting me to buy things that weren't necessary. If it's a small problem that can be let go for awhile, they tell me that. If it's a severe problem and needs fixing sooner, they tell me why. I've been to both the Washtenaw Ave location and the one on Ellsworth and never had any problem with either one. Their customer service FAR exceeds ANY business I've been to, car related or not! They always seem to focus greatly on providing the best customer service. Again, I'm just so surprised by the bad reviews, but I would still highly recommend them as I always have. read more

I am a senior citizen and when I come into the Ann Arbor area to see my Sister, and need an oil change I go to the store on Washenaw Ave. My Sister turned me onto to Uncle Ed,s because, as she said the staff is friendly and helpful. HORRIBLE! THEY TRY TO UPSELL EVERYTHING, They try to trick you to sell more. You think you're going in for a $20-$25 oil change and new windshield wipers.... and it ends up being around $84. My story at least, and it seems I'm not alone. I asked for a basic quick oil change, they had one guy working on my car, and one guy continually showing me all of this BS that they think I need to buy. They charged me $44 for a "conventional" basic oil change (after the fact), even though I asked for the cheaper one (which should've been $20). They trick you, lie to you and try to upsell everything, and then when I complained they tried to be all friendly and "HOOK ME UP" by giving me all these coupons.... ended up being a total of $10 off..... woooo so I didn't have to pay around $100 for shitty basic service, only $84.They're ridiculous, They try to upsell everything, try to scare you into getting all these shitty services, and then act stupid when they try to charge you way over way you asked for. As a native Ann Arborite who has lived in this city for more than 25 years, I can say that this is without a doubt one of the worst auto-related establishments I have ever visited. First off, their prices are well-disguised so that you are already in the midst of getting screwed when you realize that they charge 200% to 300% times the amount of the average oil change ($60-$90 vs the typical $20). As another reviewer has noted, think of one of those pestering phone salesman from Briarwood, and combine that with one of those corruption-uncovering Dateline shows about skeezy business practices, and you will have yourself Uncle Ed's. They try to push on random, unnecessary procedures on to you when, to begin with, they don't have the slightest idea about automobiles anyways. I began to a notice a strong noise engine coming from the engine immediately after my oil change. They either have loosened one of my vacuum lines, or somehow (whether intentionally or unintentionally) seriously messed up my exhaust system. I went back and asked for the manager, and they told me his hours were 'sporadic' and that I'd have to call ahead of time. I've tried for the past week and there has not been ONE time when they have had a manager on duty after 6. PLEASE BE AWARE OF HOW NEGLIGENT THIS BUSINESS BEFORE YOU ARRIVE. Go down to Platt and Ellsworth and there is a place to get an oil change for like $20 bucks. To be completely honest, this place is so deceitful that it's probably only a matter of time until this place faces legal action (if they haven't already).
