It was pure nostalgia walking around the UNC Student Stores! I went to college here and it was nice to revisit and check out the wares, but this time I was more interested in the alumni gear and baby clothing instead of textbooks :) There's an insane amount of UNC stuff available at this store! Sweatshirts, t-shirts, hoodies, and glasses, all with numerous designs. The employees I spoke to were very nice, but most of the clothing was overpriced, as I kind of expected. I couldn't bring myself to spend $25 on a baby onesie when the baby isn't going to fit in it in two months! Also, the escalator to the bottom floor wasn't working, which was a little inconvenient, but at least the elevator was functioning. Anyway, I'd definitely come back here to get some UNC merch if I was in the area, but only after accepting to myself that I was going to be spending a little too much money :) read more

This is the place to come for all things Carolina. If you're a Tar Heel fan or know someone who is, you should be able to find everything you need here. This place is called "UNC Student Stores" plural because there are multiple stores inside. They include a mini mart with food and drink ("The Pit Stop"), a pharmacy, and a post office. The stores are intended for students (e.g., books, laptops, school supplies), alumni and fans (e.g., UNC apparel, gifts), employees (e.g., hospital scrubs, lab equipment), anyone really. My wife and I stopped by to pick up some temporary UNC logo face tattoos for a game. I haven't been in many college bookstores. I remember Wake Forest's store being very small, but that was decades ago. The one I'm most familiar with is Georgia Tech's (my alma mater). The two bookstores are similar in size (both large, two stories), inventory, and amenities. For example, there's a cafe on the second floor here, where we saw several students studying. Tech's is similar with a Starbucks. Tech's bookstore is much newer, the current one built in the mid-2000s. From the outside, Carolina's bookstore looks many decades old (I'm guessing it was built in the 60s). North Carolina is one of the top-selling and best-known brands in college athletics, so it wasn't surprising for me to see the vast selection of apparel and merchandise here, from niche books to cool collectibles. They even stock UNC logo lululemon clothing. I can't imagine many universities offer logo'd lululemon apparel, but UNC does. It's certainly a cool store if you're a UNC supporter. UNC Student Stores is located on-campus, across the street from the landmark Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower. We parked for free in the adjacent N8 - Undergraduate Library surface lot on a Saturday. UNC employee permit parking (N8) is required to park in this lot during business hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-5:00pm. I believe it's free and open to the public otherwise, except for probably game days. The lot is small. It has about 40 parking spaces and the spots are narrow. read more

Man, I was NOT expecting 3 floors of beautiful Carolina blue clothing! It was overwhelming! I was on a trip and wanted to find a Carolina T-shirt. What better place to go, right? Well, I didn't find the right shirt for me, and here's the breakdown: there were a TON of shirts in a size small. The larges were almost impossible to find. The same could be said for women's shorts. I found several cute shorts... but not a single size large. On two huge floors of clothes. I will add that I avoided any of the Nike branded logos. I am not interested in being a walking billboard for the athletic sponsor, and those swooshes were obnoxiously placed in prominent places on every basketball themed item. Lots of nice looking Tshirts and sweatshirts, but it felt like a Foot Locker, not a college bookstore. I wanted to support Carolina, not Nike. Finally... for a quick in-and-out t-shirt purchase there is absolutely NOWHERE to park. My friend dropped me off and drove in circles adding to the Saturday soccer game traffic until I was ready to be picked up. Would I recommend the campus store? Of course. Do I have high hopes that you'd find your size? Not at all. But it's worth a shot. And I ended up with a visor I really enjoy because it's one size fits all and not covered in Nike logos. read more

Anything "UNC" you could possibly want is in this store. Sweats, shirts, caps, kids' wear, shorts, exercise gear, etc., etc. You can find some of this stuff cheaper elsewhere, but not the selection. TONS of Carolina gear to be had here! One of the floors has textbooks; the UNC apparel store is on the second floor. The ground floor appeared to be arts and/or computer-related. "Parking" for this store should be listed as "non-existent"...other than two metered spots in the very small parking space next to the building. Otherwise, I saw no parking. read more

My review is mainly based on textbooks, which I think are a rip-off, but the rest of the store is nice and bring the review up to three stars. So textbooks here are very expensive (compare to Amazon which are cheaper AND no sales tax). Used books can be a good deal if you find clean ones with little or no markings. Buybacks are also a terrible deal. Sell your books online and you'll get much more of your money back. Renting textbooks also looks to be equally good at separating you from your money. I would recommend using Student Stores only for any used books in good shape, and for the rest just buy and sell them online. You'll save a lot more money than using Student Stores. Profits are supposed to go to scholarships (I can't find online what % of profits actually do) but overcharging students on books isn't the most efficient form of fundraising in my opinion. read more

This is the University of North Carolina's one-stop shop for everything you might need whether you're a student or a fan on campus for a game. Student Stores has by far the best collection of Carolina apparel with Nike, New Era, and Under Armor. As far as collectables go, Johnny T-Shirt (on nearby Franklin Street) has Student Stores beat by a bit, but not by much. The big difference between Student Stores and the Carolina Shops on Franklin Street is that, where you might find a similar set of products in the Franklin Street shops, Student Stores gives some overlap, but is mostly products you won't find on Franklin Street. The Store also features a mini-mart, the Daily Grind coffee shop, Bull's Head Book Shop, a US Post Office, an entire floor of textbooks, and a tech shop downstairs. Student Stores is newly remodeled and they really did a great job. For textbooks Student Stores tends to be the most expensive and the mini-mart has a slight mark-up. Student Stores was recently renovated, so when you go by, be sure to tell the stores how good they look. Believe me, you'll make their day. At the beginning of each semester this place is flooded with people buying textbooks, but it's always fairly busy. You've got school supplies, text books, clothes, non-text books, medicine, food, etc. The idea seems to be that if you don't have a car, you should be able to get all of your sundries at walking distance to most of the dorms, and they do a pretty good job of accommodating that need. The food selections are really just for a snack on the go, if you want anything more substantial you should head down to the market at the Ram's Head. read more

I'm a new student here at UNC. I've been to the student store before I started going here when I was visiting the area, and I always thought it was nice. Which it is; it's clean well laid out, and visually appealing. However, now that I'm a student here, my interactions with student stores have been less than pleasing. To start, it's very hard to find an actual physical textbook. For most of my classes the student store sent me an email prompting me to buy "digital access" content which included e-text versions of my textbooks. I didn't love this, because I'm big on having a physical book I can write in. I simply decided that I would just purchase the physical book, but upon looking for the book on the stores website, I was left with the impression that they did not have the physical book and therefore I bought the digital access version for pretty much all of my classes. So once you purchase this "digital access" content, you don't automatically have it. You're given temporary access while your purchase is "verified" by student stores. This took OVER A WEEK. Over a week to give me DIGITAL CONTENT. The same thing occurred for my few physical books. It took them 8 days to complete my order. That's not acceptable if you're in a class where you use your textbook daily (ie like EVERY college class). So, if you decide to buy a book from here, DO NOT use the online pickup service, just go find it in the store yourself. Finally, student stores advertises that if you drop a class you can get your money back for your book. This is NOT true in all cases. Since I was under the impression that they did not have the physical book for my Political Science class, I bought the digital delivery version. When I dropped the class, I decided I would go about seeing how to get my refund (I had proof of dropping the class of course). However, I was then informed that I couldn't get a refund on digital content. This was INFURIATING because I hadn't wanted the digital version in the first place (I got it because I thought it was my only option) and then I couldn't even get my money back when I dropped the class. I work at UNC Chapel Hill so I'll wander over to the Student Store every now and then to grab lunch or just to browse. There's a large food court with a number of eateries, including a Wendy's. The store itself has just about everything a college student would ever need, with one of the three floors devoted entirely to books and magazines. You can also find plenty of UNC gear and there's a snack shop right inside the main entrance. It's also cool how they offer free flu shots to staff during Employee Appreciation Day in October. I came to Bulls Head to get a prep book I needed for a class. The woman who checked me out said I could return it within a week, so when I found the exact book on amazon for $15 less, I did return it. They then informed me that the book was not actually returnable, I could only get store credit. When I explained that was different than what I had been told, I ended up speaking to the manager who said she didn't believe that I had been told the book was returnable, and that it was rude of me to have bought a book from somewhere else. UNC Student Stores - Second floor, great swag! - Bookstores Near Me - Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Student Stores is the perfect one-stop shop on campus. It's pretty modern and also conveniently located at the Pit. Textbooks and a post office are upstairs. The main floor has UNC paraphernalia and back-to-school necessities (everything from spiral-bound notebooks to poster supplies to blank sheet music for the aspiring composer in Music Appreciation 101). Also, basic convenience store stuff -- toothpaste (walk of shame? have no fear!), magazines, gum. Bull's Head, also housed here, is a decent bookstore with broad offerings given its limited size; they have a particularly ramped-up local (NC-related/UNC-related) selection. They also host occasional author events. Be on the look-out for their book sales -- severely discounted tomes mounted high on tables in the Pit. I've found everything from a Kama Sutra guide to a misplaced library copy of Abraham Lincoln's biography. read more

They have lots of stuff. You need UNC gear, books, textbooks, scrubs, food, amenities, computer things, and supplies? You can get them all here. Are they more expensive than other places? Yes. But going to those other places involves walking to Franklin Street, and you may not have time. Also walking is hard. So it's A-OK. read more

Having worked there, both in sales and in shipping, I can tell you that the textbook section of student stores treats the students like dirt and doesn't even try to offer a fair price. They order far too much product (giving away the excess at literally pennies on the dollar to re-sellers and passing those losses on to you), enforce weird unwritten rules on buyback and returns, and generally don't give a damn about the students. They're also so badly managed that their "Our earnings go to scholarships!" banners are effectively lying; after paying their salaried employees too much, their hourly employees too little, and paying interest on the massive debt from their horribly mismanaged remodel they have almost no earnings left to give. Remember, earnings means profits. Any entity that claims to give away their 'earnings' can pay owners and managers whatever they like before giving away the rest, and they're not *legally* lying. Do yourself and your student community a favor. Shop anywhere but student stores. read more

For a major university especially sports wise, this has to be one of the worst places to find UNC fan gear. The store is small and filled with mostly generic apparel. Sorely disappointed coming here to try and find gear. read more

Don't stop for coffee unless you don't mind grounds. I've had Cold Brew, Iced Coffee, and Drip Coffee. Each had a fair amount in the cup.

Walking through the bookstore was a step back in time to my college days. While this isn't the nicest college bookstore I've been to, it is large and boasts just about anything you could want. In addition to the t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats - it also has a large book selection. The books ranged from textbooks to great reads. The bookstore was spread throughout the 3 stories with the apparel on the 2nd floor. Prices were reasonable for the most part though I was a little disappointed that they didn't have a wider selection of collegiate gear in other brands like Under Armour, although they had a few Nike items. read more

I really wish that the Student Stores renovation had been finished while I was still a student. The remodeled store is so much lighter and airier than its previous cave-like incarnation. Merchandise is also much better organized, with school supplies and textbooks on the third floor and the post office and computer shop on the first. The Bull's Head Bookshop is in its original place on the second floor, but with more space. I don't love those tiny one-lane escalators where the stairs used to be, but I guess they do help move traffic from floor to floor. The mini-mart carries a decent selection of snacks, quick lunches, and personal care items, and I love that they have an external door so you don't have to go through the main entrance to get there. Yes, prices are marked up, but all proceeds go to scholarships so at least the gouging is for a good cause. read more

Student Stores charges full retail for textbooks, even old editions or books for which they have more copies than they expect to sell at full price. They're hamstrung by North Carolina state law, and couldn't sell for a decent price if they wanted to. I suppose it's not their fault, but it's definitely the most expensive place you can buy your textbooks. What they can help is harassing students who try to get rid of their own books. I took about two dozen books that Student Stores and RAM books had either refused to buy back or that I had paid more than buyback to purchase and stood on the Pit next to their doors trying to sell them to people coming in for next semester. The people who sold them to me got more than buyback was paying (or sold something buyback claimed "had no value"), the people I was selling them to paid at least $30 less than the price upstairs, and I made $20 a book. Good for everyone involved, except Student Stores. Despite being allowed to operate only as a service to students and not as a for-profit business, they accused me of harassing their customers and threatened to call the police if I didn't leave. I asked them what law I was breaking and they just said they knew it was against the law to be there, next to the Pit entrance, in the middle of the freaking campus. Some service to the students. They knew I was selling just a couple dozen books, and not opening a damn storefront in the middle of their entrance. If they really cared they'd be happy to see students get a better deal on a couple books. read more
