The cashier wasn't talkative, no matter how hard I tried to engage him about books. I figured whatever was on the computer was way more interesting than the upcoming new book release. The selection of perfect or almost-perfect quality used books at this location of Golden Fig Books is wonderful! I have been to the Durham location multiple times and have always been impressed with the service and selection, and I decided to check out this location for the first time when I was in Carrboro last week. The people working there were just as lovely and helpful. I've been a complete book worm lately, averaging two or three books a week, and while I adore my local library and use it regularly, I also have a long list of books I want permanently on my bookshelf. I was happy to find that Golden Fig had several of the titles I'd been looking for amongst their used books, which were in perfect condition and priced better than one of the larger used bookstores I frequent. It's obvious that Golden Fig is quite selective with which used books they accept, and while that may disappoint some individuals who are looking to sell their books, it means that most of Golden Fig's used books look like new and they carry many of the most popular titles. They also have a new book section and if you purchase a new book from them, you get 10 percent off your total purchase which is a nice perk. read more

Golden Fig Books is a super cute and cozy book store! The employees are kind and helpful and the books seem to be in great condition. Most of the used books I picked up while browsing were priced around $7-$15, which isn't bad although higher than other used book stores I've been to. There is a section at the front of the store where they feature new releases, but those were priced regularly. If you're looking for newer, used books by popular authors this is the place to go! read more

But the effort was heart-warming, as she was swamped and the only person working the floor -- a shining beacon of hope in the age of the lazy and incompetent. Everything is much better value than Barnes and Noble, and the selection is surprisingly good for a small store. They could do without the political books, however. This bookstore has been open less than a year. They sell used books and they sell new books. The lady at the front desk is very well-read. She recommended Emily Oster (an economist who writes about pregnancy and raising children), and a book about Chinese confinement for new moms (a lot of pampering for the new mom and baby is involved - it should be called Chinese TLC). I bought a book by Emily Oster (Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom is Wrong) and a book by Heng Ou (The First Forty Days). If you're looking for a small bookstore where you can find new and used books without the pressure of someone hovering to see what books you are interested in, this is the place for you. It's a nice quiet bookstore where the staff are always welcoming. I've purchased and sold books here before. I will typically save my books so I have a little bag full of books for them to look through. While they go through the books, you have time to wander and find your next book to read. Most of the books that I have brought in to sell, they have bought from me. I think only a few were they unable to accept, but those just went to the local free library. Ordering books for pick up at the store was super easy in person. I just asked regarding a title and they were able to order the book for me. When the book arrived, I got a call from them saying that my book arrived and they were able to hold the book there for me until I returned to town. The thing that actually blew my mind was ordering books from Golden Fig Books online. I ordered a few books for my niece's birthday and in the comment section, I requested that the prices of the books be left out. Originally, I was just thinking on the packing slip/receipt, but the staff went above an beyond by making sure their price stickers were also not on the books (I completely forgot about the stickers.). Throughout the whole order, I got email updates on the status of my order. I got a message from the Durham Store Manager when they received my order letting me know that the books I purchased would be arriving to their store in about a week, and once all the books arrived, they would make sure that no prices were on the books before they were shipped out. Then, when the books arrived, I got another message from them letting me know that the books arrived, the books were checked to make sure prices were not on there, the books would be shipped off later that day, the tracking number for the package, and that they included a note in the package to say that books were from me. That kind of customer service on an order that was placed online is unheard of! I wish I could respond to their messages to thank them, unfortunately I couldn't find a way to, so this is my alternative way to thank them. Thank you for the astounding customer service that goes above and beyond what I have ever experienced for an online book order. I will definitely be back again (online and in person)! read more

A well curated shop with used and new books where you can find local histories, children's books, a great selection of fiction. The staff went above and beyond - and later when I required unexpected aide, they lent me a charging cord and a cozy corner seat - why? because there is a predatory towing company that is ruthlessly watching to take your car should you casually depart the premises to walk to see a shop across the street! I have the receipts! - I made 3 purchases on site and one stop across the street. I thought my car was stolen. Then realized it was towed 30 min away and the fee was $360. I LOVE GOLDEN FIG BOOKS. Whoever hired the predatory Barnes towing to patrol the lot is ruining the experience of Carr Mill Mall. read more

Golden Fig Books is a great little bookstore in Durham. I'm so glad we found this gem. It has mostly used books, all in excellent condition at decent prices, but has a section of new books as well. I called today to inquire about a book we've looked everywhere for and when they said they had it, they offered to hold it behind the counter for us. They were so so sweet & a pleasure to purchase from. They are still requiring masks which was a surprise but they had disposable ones in case you aren't prepared. Parking was also really tight, but definitely worth the hassle! read more

Upon entering I honestly thought that the whole used books thing was not true, but in fact I was wrong. While they do have some new books, they also have used copies available in impeccable condition and at bargain prices. The shop is extremely well organized and has an outstanding and pretty surprising selection of both used and new books. I was quite surprised by finding recently released books but used for cheap. My favorite bookstore in the Triangle! I dare you to browse Golden Fig's gorgeous shelves and not be enticed. The used books selection is excellent and most of the books themselves are in impossibly fabulous condition. When I went, there were also a number of books that were new/recent releases but were available as a used copy. Magical for my student budget and voracious reading/book-hoarding habits. I had the opportunity to talk to David about some of his recommendations. He was also able to reverse engineer the fragmentary pieces of book titles that I grossly mis-remembered or partial descriptions of a cover design with a syllable of the author's name. Even though he didn't have the books on hand, he was able to order copies for me with fast shipping. He is the affable and trustworthy neighborhood bookseller Durham needs. David chooses what selection of new books he carries and it's awesome to see the spotlight the store shines on the voices and narratives of women, POC, and LGBTQIA+. It's apparent that David takes the social and community responsibility of books, reading, and operating an independent business seriously, with heart and intelligence. The location right on Durham-Chapel Hill is ideal and there is dedicated parking for the bookstore. So glad this place exists! A huge fan. read more

Sometimes you just want to peruse books in a small, independent and well-curated bookstore rather than a megastore. This little shop fits the bill and offers used and new books. The staff is friendly and accommodating. It shares a parking lot with Guglhupf and some other stores so it can look crowded, but there a a few spots dedicated just to the bookstore. Like Letters downtown and the Regulator Bookshop on Ninth Street, this is a nice spot for book lovers. read more

There were a lot of options here that I haven't seen in other used book shops, which is delightful. Masks are required to enter as of 4/21/2022. The biggest drawback is that the parking is limited, making it difficult to find a spot to park.For that reason alone, I'm unlikely to come here regularly. read more

I really enjoyed going to this bookstore because all the books inside look pretty close to new even though they're mostly used books, so it feels like I was getting new books for half price. I specifically liked the fantasy/science-fiction section because I read a lot in this genre and it's generally difficult for me to find good books that I haven't read, but I picked up a couple at Golden Fig that I've actually enjoyed a lot! read more

Meh.... It's a pretty small store. If I lived nearby then I might pop in once a year. And they are bit overboard with the covid stuff (I suspect they listen to a lot of NPR). It's advertised as a used book store, and that's true. But they don't have any old used books, so if you're an antiquarian then I wouldn't bother. read more

I just got back from living in Japan for a year and I got really used to the Japanese used bookstore BOOKOFF, where you can get nearly any book in (usually) pristine condition for the equivalent of $1-3... naturally I stocked up on a ton & thought I would be done with American bookstores for a good stretch (culture shock was coming home to how pricey+beat-up used books tend to be in the states), but when I came home to Golden Fig I was surprised by how affordable & well-preserved David's stock is (& immediately resumed booklust+collecting). I've already gotten four books and I'm going to pick up a fifth today... (randomly wanted a novel I've been meaning to read & when I searched the GF website it popped up as already in stock! seriously vast stock for such a cozy little place). it's also right next to Guglhupf so lovers of fancy coffee+stockpiling books beware ;) read more

I frequently visit all of the used bookstores in the Durham/Raleigh area and was very impressed when I visited Golden Fig. Highly curated and very attractive little shop. The owner is friendly and very book savvy for looking like he's in still in his 20's. The used copies here are in incredible shape and at a great price considering their condition. In most cases we couldn't tell if a book was used or new until we looked at the price. A benefit of this size of store is that they have a handle on their inventory, and actually know what used books are in-stock. Extremely rare! And I believe the owner updates inventory daily so you can search online before heading in to see what is in stock. read more

Recently moved to the Triangle area from San Antonio Texas, which has chain used book stores like Half Price Books. Moving to Morrisville, being an avid reader, one of the first things I looked for in the area was a good used book store and literally, if you could close your eyes and imagine the cutest book store, Golden Fig Books is it. Everything is organized in a clever way, there's a great selection of older and newer titles, and the vibe is perfect. Bought myself a couple of books from some new authors, had great conversation with the friendly staff, and have already been back and was remembered by the staff members, which always feels nice. Love this new independent bookstore! I always take guests to Golden Fig when they're visiting from out-of-town because it makes for a great outing with Guglhupf just next door (who doesn't love books and pastries) -- and everyone manages to leave with something fun and interesting as a result of the wide selection and David's thoughtful recommendations. Their prices are also AMAZING because all of the secondhand options are in great shape; I've even brought in a few titles that were just taking up space on my bookshelf and earned store credit for them.
