Tucked away roughly half a block North of Potterstraat, just on the Oudegracht is an unassuming storefront entrance with only a sandwich board sign to beg your attention: "Umami".
This Asian fusion tapas bar is a gem to find! Cantonese dim sum dishes, alongside sashimi, nagiri, maki, temaki, stir fry, thai, all you can eat for €27.50 per person.
The quality is quite good for a high volume restaurant like this, but what sold me was the unique charm and design of the restaurant. It covers two floors of a very old building in Utrecht, and the lower level opens onto the "werf" (warf terrace) right on the canal - by which I mean you could feed the ducks by hand from your table.
Remember taxes are included in your price, and there's no tipping in the Netherlands so by city dining standards umami is quite the value for people that want to try a little bit of everything on the menu without having to go broke. read more
