Summary: ordered a light, paid a deposit, waited 2 months, no news, found out Ultra NEVER ordered it for me! I read all the negative reviews but was attracted by the online price of a mini-chandelier that was not available anywhere else in T'O. Don, the salesperson at the Mississauga store, took my order and told me that it would take several weeks to order. He would email me when the fixture arrived. Estimated date of arrival: Nov. 24. I asked to pick up the fixture at the Spadina store. Don wrote it on my receipt. In mid-Dec., I called the Spadina store to confirm that the chandelier had arrived. I had not received any email beforehand. The clerk had no record of the order. He could not find it on the computer. I called Don at the Mississauga store. He took down my info and said he would look into it. More than 6 hrs went by and still no answer from Don or anyone else at Ultra Lighting. I needed the fixture - my electrician was waiting. I called again. Don said that he had called the supplier and that the supplier had no record of the order!! WTF. I asked for a refund. He said I could go to the Mississauga store to process the refund. I asked him to simply do it himself and gave him my credit card number. He agreed and said he would send me either a text or an email when the refund was processed. 3 days have gone by. The refund has been posted to my credit card account. No email from Don. Why do people say they will do something and then, fail to do it? I'm just glad I used a credit card for the deposit. Otherwise, it might have been difficult to get my money back. read more

We purchased a crystal shaded chandelier for our powder room that ran a few hundred dollars from ultra lighting back in the summer of 2010. We were told it would take 4-6 weeks since it was coming from china. No big deal since our renovations would be taking about 2 months to complete anyways. By the time the 6th week rolled by we hadn't heard anything from them. My wife called them numerous times, each time they said they would look into it, took down her number and then never called her back. By the 10th week we finally had our fixture, but they had brought in the wrong color shade! It took another 3 weeks of chasing them before we finally ended up with the correct shade. I don't know what it is about the home furnishing industry but it seems when someone quotes you a delivery time you should really double it to get the real date. Once they have your money, customer service falls to the wayside. It's a shame because they have some really nice light fixtures at reasonable prices, but based on the round around we received, I'd recommend looking elsewhere unless your item is in stock. read more

Ha after reading a few reviews here I could not agree more. Once they get your money it's like Jekyll and Hyde. We purchased a number of track heads and LED bulbs and they were super friendly and helpful. When we discovered two of them were defective and returned them to exchange for two replacements, it was a different story. Very condescending and snarly. He actually gave me back one of the ones I had returned and I had to do a repair on it myself, when I got home. It really is a stupid way to be. This was the first of many lighting replacements we need to undertake in our home and he has lost any of our future business. read more

I would never make a purchase again! We bought five light fixtures and three of them had missing pieces. I was the one who had to keep calling them and follow up to check if the pieces they ordered came in. Also I asked them twice if they had cool white LED bulbs(for pendulum lights they gave us one warm and one cool) . I asked if they had the stronger than equivalent 35W. The main guy said yes and that he would order it for me. When i came to pick it up it was the same LED light he gave us the first time and when I asked another clerk why they didn't order the stronger ones(45W as they promised) he said no such exist. The same guy who told me he would have ordered it for me just stood on the side and played stupid. If you think they would have given me some refund or store credit, forget about it! Conclusion: If you like poor customer service and crooked people, this is your store! read more

Update: it's now Monday 23rd July, the lamp is now ready for pickup, but apparently we owe them $69. They originally quoted us "around $30" and told us it would take 3 days. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS STORE. This place has great products but once purchased the quality of service received is the worst I've ever experienced. We purchased a dining room pendant light for over $600, and received it after weeks of ordering it. We opened up the box with the MANAGER and checked to ensure it was the right product. The paper on the box indicating the dimensions and product details was ripped off so we were unable to confirm the size. After paying an electrician to assemble (as it is a complicated piece and in the box one would not be able to measure the size regardless) and install we realized that they had ordered an 18" pendant when we had paid and ordered a 22" pendant. The cost of the electrician was around $200 and after calling to let them know they ordered the wrong product they refuse to do anything more than order the right product. Is that not what should have occurred in the first place? The manager is speaking as if he's doing us a favour by ordering the correct product and claims he has no involvement in the cost of installation. The error was completely on the employees for not ensuring that they had received the correct product in the first place and now I have to pay a total of $400 for their errors. Is this right??? Save yourself the trouble and purchase your products from a reputable store which will seek your interest if they do you wrong. This is an ongoing problem, and will update as this is resolved ...if at all. read more

Asked for a price for a ceiling lamp with and extended wire. Was called back quoted a price and accepted it. The employee assured me this price was going to be honoured when we went to purchase and that other employees would know about it as he was away on vacation. When we went to purchase, there was a completely different quote. Clearly there was some sort of mixup. The owner/supervisor basically told us we fabricated the quoted price and would not honour the original commitment nor offer any extra for the mixup (even a complimentary bulb for the wrong info would have been a nice gesture). He acknowledged the employee was new and probably made a mistake. Very sour customer service experience. Will not recommend this place to anyone which is unfortunate since they have nice products. read more

I spent over $ 1,000 here.... This store has good prices and good selection of contemporary lighting fixtures but the service is TERRIBLE! TERRIBLE! TERRIBLE! Purchase #1 - $ 500 Chandelier - I bought a beautiful chandelier however when I got it home and tried to install it there was a piece that hooks the crystal to the fixture that was missing and another piece was defective. I spoke with the manager Bryan - although they said they would get the replacement parts in and they did--The part he gave me was a total piece of junk and it even broke when I was trying to install it. It was NOT the correct piece even! I had to make my OWN corrections to the defective pieces so it would hang straight AND create my own hook to replace that piece that was missing! They sold me a lemon! The manager did offer to replace the entire chandelier but after multiple trips to the store and install/uninstall the chandelier I had no patience left to take down the fixture I finally got in place only to put it back up again! Purchase #2 - $ 400 Floor Lamp. Another beautiful piece paid in full. They did not have it in stock and the Manager- Bryan told me: They would order from another store and it would be here in 2 DAYS or if not they would order it from the warehouse and it would take a WEEK. 2 WEEKS passed by and no word from the store. I called and it soon became apparent that the manager did nothing since my order! Fine, mistakes happen. He told me he would call me back the next day. The next day came and went and no call. I called the day after and EVERYTIME I call the manager has the same absent minded responses and doesn't even remember our last conversation! I have to remind him that he was the one that told me he would call me! The customer should not have to hound him to remember to get the order (paid in full!) in. He again PROMISED to call me on Monday at 12noon FOR SURE! ( his words not mine) Guess what? Monday came and NO CALL. I wait until Tuesday at 4pm to call and AGAIN HE HAS TO BE REMINDED!! Finally he blurts out that his grandfather is in the hospital-- whether that is true or not-- I am not a mind reader and if you say you will call back then do what you say you are going to or delegate the task to your employee!) Lastly he rudely says: If I want the fixture he'll get it in otherwise I can come in and get my money back! This store has a great selection of contemporary lighting, but the service is terrible. I must agree with other reviewers here, reluctantly. In the space of two days, the store made the following three mistakes: told me that a product was in stock, but when I arrived to pick it up, told me that it was actually out of stock; showed me a nice lamp, and then 'accidentally' found that the price was 50% higher at the cash register; and sold me a product that was the wrong color (inside the correct box), even though the clerk had inspected the product directly in order to insert new bulbs. If you like contemporary design, this is the best lighting store in Toronto. We purchased several modern fixtures and love them all.

We had an issue with them. Wanted to cancel order before it was shipped. At first they were hesitant but in the end they did issue a credit card refund. I bought a beautiful $400 ceiling fixture here. They were out of lightbulbs so I had to come back for them another day. When I went to put the lamp up a piece was missing. I promply called the store and got a lukewarm response and then no follow up call about the part. The next day I called and spoke with the manager. He was much more helpful- I stopped back in and he replaced the part with no questions asked and he had the light bulbs in stock so I picked them up too. So a bit of a mixed bag all round....I expected a bit more for the price. I do love the fixture though..... read more

I wouldn't recommend shopping here. Bought 2 pendant lamps a year and a half ago for $110 each. One of the lamps failed and I assumed it was the transformer. Owner told me it was a one year warranty and said there is nothing he can do. I asked for his help in diagnosing the problem and his answer was "I am not an electrician" so I asked him what a new transformer would cost and his answer was that I should spend $60 to have him send it back to the manufacturer for testing. He was NO HELP AT ALL, he wouldn't stand behind his products, and just wanted to make $$$$. P.S. Went to RONA and bought a new transformer for $30 and fixed it myself. Screw him! read more

Ordered 2 pendant lights from them and was told they would take 4 days to arrive. After 2 weeks we called, they had no idea where the lights were and said they would call back but never did. We had to call them several times over a 2 month span and no one ever called us to update on the status. When they finally arrived and were asked if they could do anything for me inconvenience just flat out said no and refused to talk about it. Annoyed, we took the lights home without checking first (which was my mistake) to discover that not only were they were not even the lights i ordered but they are all scratched up and look terrible. Got a crystal Chandelier from Mississauga location, returned to the store, received a credit store which was never recognized after making several trips to the store and many telephone calls. WORST customer service EVER! The lamp I bought had a lose wire inside which blew both the bulb I bought from the store and another one I bought. They would not replace the bulbs saying it was my fault for not bringing the lamp back! Apparently, I should have made transport arrangements to return a faulty wiring lamp... The attitude on top of it all was such bad customer service I told them keep the broken bulbs and enjoy the profit as I would never be back nor recommend the place. This is not an honourable business. I fell in love with a modern chandelier and purchased it for $1,100. I hired an electrician to install it and 4 of the large crystals could not be hung because the mechanism to hang was broken. I took them back and Bryan Balgobind, the "lighting consultant" took them and said "no problem, the rep will be here next week". That was two years ago. Both myself and the designer who worked with me have tried numerous times to at least get the 4 pieces back..nope. I am starting a small claims court claim. Very, very bad business...no ethics. This is by far one of the worst run businesses I have ever encountered during my 33 years on this planet. I actually had to create a yelp account to warn others about the unprecedented level of dysfunction Brian (the owner) and his team (specifically Anthony) embody. I saw many bad reviews already online about this business but mistakenly took the plunge thinking they may be exaggerated. They are not. After spending over $1000 on lights we began our roller coaster of lies & mismanagement for over 3 months of delays after they were due. I cannot even remember how many times I had to call, walk into the store and chase down employees to get an update or followup on status of our order only to get the run around. I can comfortably say that over 95% of the time any action they took to follow up, deliver something or even call back went completely nowhere. We constantly got excuses about the manufacture and their ability to deliver but then once they had the product in stock had problems with incorrect parts (numerous times), delivery and lack of desire to do anything but pass the buck onto the customer. It really seemed that every time we were in that store customers were coming in with similar problems. Make no mistake this is a two-bit business that doesn't have any ability or desire to do ANY level of customer service. Do not be drawn in by the selection of products that they have on display, the hassles you will face is not remotely worth it.
