Wow, do NOT dismiss the reviews here regarding their horrible customer service. I read the reviews before going to their salon, but I foolishly dismissed them because a friend of mine loves their salon.
What I learned is that you have to be REALLY careful about what stylist you get...quality control is not their strong suit.
I called and asked for a full color with the stylist my friend likes (Stacey), but she was booked. The woman on the phone suggested that I book with Christina instead. Keep in mind, this woman KNEW that she was booking me for a full color appointment when she booked me with Christina. I asked the woman on the phone how long Christina had been with Ulta as a stylist, and the woman replied, "Oh, she's new to us, but she's been a stylist for nine years." Okay...
The FIRST red flag was when I showed up for my appointment on time, and Christina hadn't even arrived at the store yet. She rolled in ten minutes after my appointment start time, talking loudly about how bad traffic was. I actually pulled up Google Maps at that point to see what on earth she was talking about, and I didn't see any bad traffic of note in the broader Dallas area. So, okay...whatever...
The SECOND red flag was when I finally got seated (now 15-20 minutes after my scheduled appointment start time) and talked with her about what I wanted done. This was a fairly basic full root touch-up...I've never seen a stylist act so confused in response to my explanation. I actually at this point started getting worried and asked her about her experience. She told me she usually works with "ethnic" hair but assured me her "technique" was good and that she had worked at Ulta for three years -- so I thought maybe the woman on the phone had been mistaken? But no...later, someone walked in who recognized her and was like, "OMG girl, you're working in the salon now?!" So apparently she had been an Ulta *salesperson* for three years, but not a stylist. I felt it was extremely misleading for her to have responded to my question that way.
The THIRD red flag was when she actually started doing my hair and strangely sectioned it with a bunch of elastic bands, then grabbed a brush and acted like she was about to just paint my head. I stopped her and asked if she wasn't going to use foil? She paused, looked confused, and then TURNED TO THE STYLIST NEXT TO HER AND ASKED HOW TO DO IT. I literally almost got up and left at this point, which I DEFINITELY should have. But she kept reassuring me that her technique was solid.
The FOURTH red flag was when she put foils all over my hair in the most bizarre, disorganized manner...I swear, I almost took a picture of myself at this point because I'd never seen foils look like that, completely all skewed and at bizarre angles rather than in neat rows next to each other. It looked like I was experimenting with some sort of punk new hairstyle trend.
The FIFTH red flag was when she washed my hair with ICE COLD water the entire time. I actually thought maybe something was wrong with the sink, until my second washing (oh yeah, we'll get to that) when I learned nope, the sink was working just fine. She also got water in my ears and never once asked me how the temperature was. Also, at this point we were past TWO HOURS and I hadn't even had my hair washed...I was running late to a meeting with a contractor. I'd told her at 1.5 hours that I needed to leave soon, and despite acknowledging that I was running late to a meeting, she continued working super slowly.
The GRAND FINALE was when she got me back in the chair, blow-dried my hair, and...wow. It was a patchworked, brassy mess, with some parts where there were distinct dye lines at bizarre angles where they definitely shouldn't have been. I was trying really hard not to completely lose it at this point -- I'd given up on making it to the contractor meeting, and I'd just spent 2.5 hours for my hair to look like a complete disaster. I told her I wanted it fixed, and not by her. She went to get the salon manager (Cindy?), who definitely recognized the issue and said she'd fix it herself. The bizarre thing was that Christina NEVER apologized or even acted distressed...she was all smiles, seemed totally unperturbed.
Cindy was wonderful, but I was there for another two hours for her to fix it (and I still have weird patches missing color, but at least it's passable). But the REAL KICKER? They tried to charge me FULL PRICE. One of the stylists told me, "Oh, yeah, I think you should get a 50% discount," but then the store manager came over and told me I would absolutely not receive any discount, because Cindy had only done a "touch-up" rather than a full fix. (Yeah, not so much, and also what? That's your rationale? We screwed up, but not bad enough?) I literally had to argue with her for about 10 minutes before she finally agreed to give me a 30% discount. I still think it's outrageous that I had to pay anything. Everyone I've told about this experience agrees. read more
