We saw SO much wildlife in the 30 hours we stayed there. Fish of all types, deer, wild turkey, toads, owls, eagles, and even a porcupine! The stars were beautfiul and the park in well maintained. Porta potties we're throughout the park and close to our sight, they were clean too. There's a little shop nearby with everything you would need from fresh bait/fishing supplies to grocery items like raw meat and butter. They also had snacks, sodas, beers and we saw a few to go orders of pizza leave too. Such a beautiful lake and amazing representation of Wisconsin wildlife. There's boat launches and kayaks launches in the park. It is also bear country so inform yourself on rules before staying!

We drove in to the campsite, park, then have a 400 yard walk to each campsite. There is the option to boat into some of these shore line campsites as well. The only down side to camping here is the mosquitos are pretty crazy during the high mosquito season in the summer. They weren't bad in late August, but when we recently camped there in July, everyone had 20 mosquito bites. If you go during the mosquito season I highly recommend a screened in room to hang out and cook. We couldn't hang outside of the screen room longer than a few minutes before being attacked by a lot of mosquitos, no amount of bug spray helped that situation. Our group of friends that we camped at here plan to keep coming. It's about a 4 hour drive from Chicago, just about half an hour north of Wisconsin Dells

We rented a Pontoon Boat from Michael's Landing while we were in the area, mainly because we heard…read moreabout all the boats that go out to the island and drop anchor, and we wanted to do the same. When we got out to the island there were lots of other boats, people swimming and having fun, so we found a spot and dropped our anchor. We were getting ready to jump in the lake but we noticed that we had started drifting, so we pulled up the anchor and made sure we were in a shallow spot according to the depth gauge on the boat. We dropped anchor again...same thing...we just kept drifting. We tried several more times in various depths, but the anchor would not hold. We called to ask about this, I mean, how do you drop anchor wrong? We explained the issue and we were told that the anchors provided on the boats are not meant to anchor in sand! What? The whole lake bottom is sand! They did say they USED to provide sand anchors, but they cost $150 and people had lost them in the past so they stopped using those. They suggested we could try to pull the boat up really close to the island and then have someone get off the boat and carry the anchor onto the island and hook it on a rock or tree. REALLY? Okay, so now we have a boat that we can.t anchor! They did offer that we could drive all the way back and pick up another boat, but it would have the same anchor. Uh, thanks a lot! So now our plans for the day needed to change. We made the best of things, cruising around the lake and stopping at The Dirty Turtle (They have docks to tie up to). On our way back towards Michael's, we hit a sand bar and got stuck, even though the depth gauge said we were in 20ft. of water! A couple of us got out of the boat to push it off the sand bar. Once we pushed the boat to deeper water, we needed to get out and climb back aboard...which is when we discovered the ladder was broken! Yep, totally would not stay attached to the boat. Broken! Thankfully we all made it back on board. Once we returned the boat to Michael's, we went inside the bar and talked to the guy working there. When we told him our story, he said, "Oh, that ladder is still broken?" Are you kidding? They charged us $200 for the boat, and we agreed to pay for our gas upon return but after the fiasco we had, we said we did not think we got what we paid for and that we would not be paying the $28 we owed for gas, which seemed overly fair considering the situation. A couple of days later we got a call from a woman saying that we signed an agreement to pay for our gas, and we explained what happened, and why we didn't think we should be charged for the gas. She was extremely rude and said she would be charging our credit card for the gas and that we could go ahead and dispute it but they would dispute it back and we could go back and forth with the credit card companies and but we would lose. (Sounds like maybe we are not the first dispute their charges!) She also said that they have never had anyone say they could not anchor their boats. Listen, we are not idiots, we have rented pontoon boats every summer for the last 15 years and we have always been able to anchor! Stay away from this place, these boats, and especially these rude people! Any GOOD business person would have said, "I'm so sorry for your troubles on the lake and in an effort to make it up to you, the $28 in gas is on us". Agree?

They were…read moresimilar, but Castle Rock's was slightly larger, and I'm told it has a nicer bottom, not as mucky as Mirror Lake. I wouldn't know for sure, though, since I didn't go in the water. I'm not a beach person, but my friends are and I wanted to be with them. I liked laying out on under the shady trees near the beach and watching the activities like a family group dragging out giant float after giant float (a camel, a rocker, a unicorn, a shark, etc.). They got them in the water, and then they promptly tipped them over whenever anyone in the family got on top of one. There were some friendly dogs there, but they weren't allowed on the beach, so one sadly got tied to a stake in the grass and had to watch their family have all the fun from a distance. Another cute 2-year old dog cried anytime anyone came near it, you could tell it wanted to play, but it's owner was an elderly gentleman who just wanted to sit in a chair and look at stuff (kind of like me). Maybe it's just me, but I would never bring my pet anywhere fun on vacation and then ignore it for hours. Anyway, it's a very crowded place on a beautiful summer day and if you like crowds and people-watching, this is the place for you. Lots and lots of people on the water boating, paddle boarding, swimming, etc. An ice cream truck came around a couple of times, there was volleyball nearby. My friends and I brought our bocce set and played a round. Nice mid-day outing.

We had no idea this existed. The views from the top on this beautiful sunny day were great and worth the 303 steps to the top. We hiked on a couple of the other trails to see some of the other rock outcrops. The trails were very nice. We drove through the campground and it appeared to have good sites. There are a few picnic areas but not a lot of other amenities. It appears that the main entrance to this park closes sometime in late October but there is a winter entrance for cross country skiing on the south side of the park. Worth a detour to check out.

(and sirens on the nearby highway) Checking in was confusing with conflicting information on the website and sign. We had paid for our campsite on-line, but it had said you also needed to purchase a park pass upon arrival. The building was closed when we arrived and while we were there I don't think it was ever open. We reserved one of the handful of electrical sites which was pretty level gravel. The fire pit had a mangled grill over part of it that wouldn't be usable for cooking. What made our site lovely is that there was no one on one side, the side of our camper door, and the other side had lots of room before our neighbor. There are lovely trails to explore and a hike up a zillion stairs will give you an overlook of the area. The creek also went through the park and was a perfect place to cool off the dogs. :)

We rented two of the cabins and the amount of space inside was perfect for this family of 4! Each kid got their own loft, we had a bed with wonderful space. The number of things to do while there was perfect for the ADHD kids and the ability to sit and watch them do ALL THE THINGS was perfect for this tired momma! We played mini-golf at 6:45 am, horseshoes at 6:54 am, and playground at 7 am to just start all over again (multiple times)! Definitely plan your drinking schedule with the fact that the bathroom is not in the cabin but still close! We had s'mores on the fire pit and two nights of BBQ! We even swam in the lake and the kids LOVED the inflatables (even the 40-year-old fat dudes got out there). The owners were incredible and friendly. Really can see that they care and have built a wonderful community. We will be back!
