In a small town that struggles to survive through the long winter like Seward, this shop does something remarkable. They also sell Native Made goods CHEAPER THAN ANCHORAGE. I am an advocate of selling as much local, native made goods as possible. I had a conversation with the buyer at the store and he was telling me with each passing year there are less native carvers and artists because elders are passing away. They have some incredible pieces of art in the store. For people that don't have large sums of money to invest in art pieces, they have some local pieces of jewelry, Alaska themed shirts and hats, stickers, mugs, magnets, books and cook books, etc. They have also have a whole aisle of toys for out-of-towners who are desperate to satisfy a whiny kiddo during a trip. They even have ponchos, backpacks, umbrellas and other immediate need items that are often very hard to find in a town this size. Honestly, don't judge and book by its cover. This place has you covered.

They had a lot of Russian stuff, but also some Alaskan stuff too. As for the Russian stuff, they had Soviet era hats and pins, propaganda posters, Russian lacquer boxes, Russian stacking dolls, and stuff like that. They also had carvings which I found interesting. If you're looking for fishing equipment, locally made knives (Big Beard Blades), mud boots, paint, and other community-specific hardware, this is your place and with extensive hours. In my role as a short time tourist, this place is better than a local gift shop. Gayle and I stopped in a few times, mostly for incidentals while trying to avoid home improvement items for back home. Basically there are no hardware stores, clothing stores (unless you a looking for a souvenir t-shirt) or sporting goods stores in Seward Alaska. This store had everything and was enjoyable to visit. It even had a second floor. My wife ended up purchasing some rubber boots for the ice, which we later found out were like the National boots of Alaska, and I purchased a knit cap with the Bay Traders logo. There are well-organized shelves, curated sections, and pretty cool "extras" you don't find in the average bookstore. The yarn section is neat and respectably stocked if you're into knocking out two shopping lists at once :-) There's also some art prints, and a few miscellaneous stickers, pins, etc. that we know some of our friends would find a perfect little gift. The chill overhead music and warm reading nook with chairs in the front make this a welcome stop if you're looking to get out of the cold breeze for a few minutes. We left with a new book and a strong inclination to drop back in again on our next Seward visit.

My only issue was as they got busier and people were waiting for tables it felt as if they were rushing us. And I would totally understand that if we were sitting with empty glasses or empty plates just taking up the table, but we still had wine and food to enjoy. And we also ordered several items so I felt we should be "allowed" to stay for a bit. But overall I recommend this little local place and definitely suggest stopping in for some wine and snacks.
