While preparing for my cruise leaving out of Seward Alaska I was told by one of the locals that Bay Traders was like the Walmart of Seward and when I had a chance to enter the store I soon found out why. Basically there are no hardware stores, clothing stores (unless you a looking for a souvenir t-shirt) or sporting goods stores in Seward Alaska. This store had everything and was enjoyable to visit. It even had a second floor. My wife ended up purchasing some rubber boots for the ice, which we later found out were like the National boots of Alaska, and I purchased a knit cap with the Bay Traders logo. This is definitely a store for both the local folk and the tourists. Great customer service. read more

I love wandering through Hardware stores and this one near to Seward Small Boat Harbor is big (2 big floors) and the kind that you might expect in this locale. If you're looking for fishing equipment, locally made knives (Big Beard Blades), mud boots, paint, and other community-specific hardware, this is your place and with extensive hours. In my role as a short time tourist, this place is better than a local gift shop. Gayle and I stopped in a few times, mostly for incidentals while trying to avoid home improvement items for back home. I needed some paint for the bathroom so went to Bay Traders True Value & picked up some paint swatches to take back to the house. After some decisions on color went back to the store & was greeted by Dustin who offered to help, gave him the color I wanted & he proceeded to the computer. The color swatch didn't match the computer color, after some double checking on different colors we decided to go with the color I originally picked out & the color came out perfect. I have to say Dustin was Awesome in his customer service skills & attitude towards his job. He told me he was still learning & I have to say he had a "can do" attitude!! This is the store where I went whenever I needed anything on my fishing trip here. This is a great place, its close by the dock... a one stop shop for anything you might possibly need in Seward. Well unless you're looking for a turkey sandwich. Need some Bonine to ward off seasickness? Its there. Need chest waders and treble hooks for catching reds heading up river? Its there. Need slickers for wet and rainy weather? Its there. Need gifts for your niece and nephew? Its there. You name it, they got it... everything that you could possibly want in Seward. A useful place. The store has many things needed in Alaska. To all reading... please visit the store if you are in the area. We were there in June 2010 and bought a few items. Largely due to my own fault, we had some complications with our purchase. When I contacted customer service at the store I was AMAZED. She was awsome in getting my issue resolved. It was extremely pleasant as I thought this type of service was something of the past or perhaps limited to a store like Nordstom's. Went there to get a fishing license and was shopping with others. The older lady was very frank and rude with us. We purchased an item with a price but was tiled it was $10 more. I hate to shop with a place that does not appreciate our business. Gave it 2 stars only because it was a cool place. read more

Unfortunately I have no option to give a -5 star rating, but it is what it is. I served our country for over 30 yrs and I have never been so belittled by someone when asking if they have a military discount! The owner/manager was the rudest person I have encountered in a business. A simple 'no' would have sufficed. I was also sold one item for a price higher than it was marked. In previous years I have purchased many items at this business but I will never spend a dime there again! I was with a life long Alaskan (born and raised) who will no longer patron this store, and has shared this disappointment with all of her friends and family. read more

We were there in August 2015. Amazing True Value store. They have everything anyone could want or need. Right across the street from the docks. Two floors of shopping wonder! We were visiting Seward and I needed a warmer jacket. They had great clothing upstairs. Cargo pants, pajamas, sweats, jackets, socks, sweatshirts, shoes, boots, hats, just everything. I bought a fantastic Columbia Turbo Down jacket for 50% off the retail price. What a great value. Nice, friendly staff......and a restaurant "The Fish House" attached to the store. I'd give negative stars if it were possible. I bought a fishing pole rod/reel combo at the advice of the salesman. It was found less than 10 minutes later that the reel was defective. When asked about returning or exchanging it, I was told it "wasn't our problem." I attempted to contact the manufacturer, yet was told it was an "out of date combo" and they couldn't help, which was in contradiction to the salesman telling us the pole we bought was the "latest and greatest." If I were you I'd avoid this place like the plague. They're full of liars and thieves, who's only reason for existence is to steal from the cruise ship patrons. Unfortunately this seems to be par for Alaskan customer service. read more

I purchased a fishing rod/reel combo from the store I used it two times over the corse of four days and it failed . The tip of the rod came out so that the line was rubbing on metal. The second issue I have is the two peace rod comes apart frequently when I cast. I attempted to return the very expensive rod to the store and they would not take it back. I don't plan to shop there again because of the experience. I still plan on fishing in the area. My experience with this store left me feeling cheated. read more
