Possibly the worst bank I've ever been to. Tried to deposit money into my bank account there that I've had for 20 years and the clerk, a 20 something refused to let me deposit money into my own bank account. Then, after I mentioned I was a local business owner and a patron of that location UFCU for 20+ years he smirked and laughed at me. I cursed him out and asked for my money back, stating I was going to go to another bank. BUT he refused to return my money. Instead, the screen went black in the drive thru, and his manager got on and refused to give me back my money until I told him what happened. I did, and then, he tried to suggest a different situation happened, to cover up for the inappropriate attitude and behavior of UFCU refusing to let me deposit money into my own bank account. When I didn't go along, and restated, as I've typed what actually happened he got irritated and tried to get me to reword my complaint again to match his version not reality. At this point I brought my smart phone up into the air, and in his line of sight from the bank camera, and stated, "I'm going to start recording this conversation if you don't give me back my money, and I'm going to take this recording to the branch manager above you." Without empathy, without intelligence and just rudeness, he hung up, black screen on the drive thru window, and finally I got my money back that I went to another bank, and deposited easily without this drama and petty bs. UFCU does not care about you. Simple as that. There's a reason there are no great reviews on here about them. I've been with them over 20+.years, and service has gotten progressively worse, especially over the last couple of years. As I'm now approaching 30 MINUTES on the phone with them, most of it on hold, the problem is no closer to being resolved even after three phone calls in the last month! The first time they told me "we'll make sure it doesn't happen again." Lie. The second time I was told the same thing. Another mistruth. AND I asked for someone to call me to explain what's going on. Never got a call from anyone. Now, as I sit on the phone waiting for someone to talk to, I have absolutely no faith that they'll ever do anything to fix the problem. They just don't care. I have too many services there that I use to just pack up and go elsewhere, but if this saves someone else from a bad decision, good. read more

Sending another wire.... and yet another bad experience with UFCU! Imagine that! WHY IN THE HELL do I have to answer verification questions, fill out a pdf, sign it, attached my license to just send a wire? THEN THAT WIRE DEPARTMENT HAS TO CALL YOU TO CONFIRM! NO OTHER FINANCIAL INSTITUTION MAKES YOU JUMP through his many hopes to just send a wire! Then when I complain about how outdates their wire process is, I get attitude from the wire cleark. To hell with UFCU! Enough is enough, I am closing my account and going with SOFI! read more

I thought it was important to point out something that UFCU seems to struggle with. It dawned on my wife and I that we were not sure if our accounts had beneficiaries attached to them. It turns out this bank (for that matter another bank we use as well) are not proactive in asking for such designations, you have to take it upon yourself to ask. It's best to go to the main branch to handle this and even then it can be somewhat confusing. The paperwork does not have any mention of CDs or the fact that there are primary and contingent beneficiaries. In other words, if you want your spouse to be the primary beneficiary, but you have two other secondaries on the paperwork, it looks as though everybody shares equally. There's no way to break down the percentages of distribution. And if you have a CD with the bank, there's no mention of it on the paperwork for you to designate someone to receive it. So if you find that you have no beneficiaries on your accounts, you better head down to the main branch and talk to somebody who's in the know because those funds could go into probate or something worse like unclaimed funds. read more

The blond hair lady that works at the UFCU on mopac and highway 71 is a godsend. I just left the ufcu location on ben white in frustration and was gonna close my account with them because I was so angry with the service level at ben white. The lady at the location on highway 71 and mopac was who I talked with next and she addressed all my issues and went the distance to help me resolve my issues. If it wasnt for her today being the professional that she is, I was gonna be closing out my account. I dont know her name but she has the whitest hair I've ever seen and she was so patient and professional that I wanna give her the credit due. UFCU needs to realize what a valuable asset she is to this company and keep her around. The two different people I spoke with at the ufcu on ben white was horrible with no understanding or patience that I left and went to the mopac location prepared to close my account with UFCU but the blonde hair lady saved the day and restored my trust and confidence in this bank. I have recommended 6 people who have active accounts with ufcu and are happy with their banks and after today, i shall keep recommending ufcu as the best bank in Austin texas and maybe the best bank in the whole state or Texas. I have had half a career in finance and have been trying to help a friend who uses this bank. Good Lord, what a mess; I have to respond. We've been unable to do the bare minimum of bank functions with this branch. No follow-through on urgent requests; late replies when they are legally required to respond (e.g., tax issues); utterly ignoring decades of my friend's business tenure with the bank ... the list goes on and on. As mentioned, working in the field has exposed me to a stadium-full of self-centered and incompetent bankers, financial support staff, investment counselors, etc. But I guess if you're going to do something, go all the way. After being a member of University Federal Credit Union (UFCU) for over 25 years, I finally had enough. Over the last few years the service has gotten so bad that being a member is a joke. Customers or rather as UFCU calls it member services are not considered nor taken care of. Today, Marks the end of a 25 year banking relationship. At least with the major financial banks you know you're just a number, while at UFCU, you're not only a number but a member, or owner of the credit union, which is an even bigger insult/joke. read more

I found the staff at this location, 4611 Guadalupe, to be quite rude. Recently I'd written a two-star Update to my original review, detailing voluminous problems with UFCU's website. UFCU, trying to game the system, flagged that review as not being specific to the particular location my review was tied to (4611 Guadalupe), and got Yelp to remove it. So, good job, idiots: You got my 2-star update removed, so I replaced it with a 1-star review. Enjoy. UFCU's action tells consumers everything they need to know about how seriously UFCU will take any complaint you may have (i.e., not at all). Instead of actually considering customer feedback (that I took the time to painstakingly enumerate so UFCU could fix the problems), instead UFCU tries to censor unhappy customers. UFCU should also get a clue that if they have a pathetic 2.6-star rating, it's time to make improvements. But instead of fixing their problems, their focus is on trying to quash reviews they don't like. There ought to be a way for customers to review pros & cons of a businesses' website, because that's a huge part of the customer experience (and before UFCU's website went to hell, I noted the good things about their site in an earlier review). But again, until Yelp allows comments about a businesses' website, then for the record, I had a bad experience with staff at the 4611 Guadalupe location specifically. read more

Decades of Loyalty, but No More I have been a loyal UFCU customer since 1997, but after years of declining service, I've finally reached my breaking point. Recently, I experienced a situation where my debit card was repeatedly declined while trying to pay for car repairs--even after clearing the transaction through UFCU's fraud protection system three times. When I called for assistance, I was forced to spend nearly an hour on the phone with an overseas call center that provided no real help, offering only vague reassurances that my card was "clear to use." This was clearly not the case. This isn't the first time I've been frustrated by UFCU's service, but it is the last. The customer service has become impersonal, unhelpful, and unreliable. There is no accountability, and when you need assistance the most, you're met with roadblocks instead of solutions. After nearly three decades of loyalty, I am walking away. I will be closing all my accounts and moving my business to an institution that values its customers and provides competent, accessible support. UFCU has consistently failed to meet even the most basic expectations, and I can no longer justify staying with a bank that refuses to prioritize its members' needs. POOR customer service at Steck location. Go in for appt, am told to wait 45 minutes. I do. Then, surprise, loan officer took lunch leaving me in the lurch to wait till they get back. Another 45 minutes pass. I inquire as to whats with the delay for 5 minutes of paperwork? Oh, you have to wait another 30 minutes!... I walked out disgusted after wasting 2 hrs of my life. UFCU member of 3 years. Each time I come into this branch it's always a quick and positive experience! Today I came in to get a new debit card printed and was helped by Clinisha. I asked her how I could build my credit as someone in my 20s having average credit and she suggested a credit card and walked me through the application and what type of credit card would work best for my lifestyle. I've always been nervous and overwhelmed by credit building but she helped me navigate and better understand how to use it to help me! This is branch is awesome! No In-Person Customer Service. When you go into a UFCU branch, you use a telephone and screen to complete transactions. They can neither provide new currency bills nor suggest a place where one might obtain some new $1s, $5s, etc. Phone support is consistently helpful if you can tolerate a long menu of choices before reaching a person. read more

Breathtakingly -and consistently- terrible customer service. This bank has enjoyed balances in 7 figures from my family and their businesses. Customer service must be begged-for, and is handled lackadaisically. I cannot get my corporate 1099, it's terribly late, I continue to supply documents, they continue to find them unsatisfactory but will not reply in a clear or timely manner. Serious and repeated account and funds access problems have arisen for several years and their response is consistently unconcerned. Unfortunately, changing banks is extremely impractical in our case. They purport to have "relationships" with other credit unions. My husband and I needed to buy a car in another state and needed cash. These country-wide relationships are far more tenuous than represented. Don't assume you'll be able to get funds out of state or that anyone at this bank will find it concerning if you can't access your funds for extended periods of time. When my husband passed away they were *extremely* insensitive with me as I endeavored to address banking matters. Even just one of these complaints is unacceptable. My advice: don't even start here. TO UFCU'S REVIEW APOLOGIST: I have been contacting by email, by phone (no one answers) and by secure message. So save your "just let us know and we will rectify" reply her and instead ask your support staff to reply to customer communications and pleas for help that have already been received.) read more

I've been with UFCU for 20 years or more and was happy, but they 'updated' the online banking system a year or so ago and now I'm being charged late fees because payments from my checking account take so long to get to the vendor. Example, my last city utility payment took 10 calendar days to be paid to city of Austin, I've now been hit with 2 late fees from city in last 5 months. Interesting that online deposits from other institutions are accepted very quickly by UFCU. No reason for electronic payment to local company should take 10 days, so am switching to another bank for online banking. read more

It's sad what UFCU has become. I've been a member since 1990 and was always happy with them. Then.... trouble started with the new app and new website design. Always iffy whether it will allow me to access my account. The bill pay function is difficult/frustrating to navigate - confusing GUI and not intuitive at all to use. The website is just as bad. Tried to log in this a.m. and 2-part verification was not working. Would not issue a code. Called and spoke to a guy that wanted me to read back a code he sent me. THAT is a well-known scammer tactic that most people have been warned against. That ended the call and the possibility of getting into my account to pay bills. The call-in customer services is also sad and often frustrating, IF you can wait on hold long enough to speak with a live person. Even after a year of this new app and web interface, things have not improved. It's a serious drag to have to make a change to RBFCU and UHCU for my main banking & bill pay services (I'm a member of both) and keep putting it off, but it's probably time to bite the bullet. Sad. My family and I have been banking with UFCU for over 18 years, but the new software makes it impossible to do my finances for my business accounts as well as my personal accounts (and my familiy members) with them. It is impossible to sort the different accounts out online since all of them show up in no particular order that is helpful. So moving money betweeen accounts take a long time now. An overview over each occount is unavilable. (i.e how much checking plus saving etcadd up to for each account). Additionally the website or the app does not always update. Since my biz accounts work on tight margins I have to know if a payment has been made or not and if paying the next bill will put me into negative territory and negative fines. A few other issues on the software are also hard to swallow. For example it is much harder to send money to my contractor who also banks with UFCU because it used to be so easy and immediate for us to transfe money between accounts. Now we can't even make notes on payment between us. Due to all these issues that are not being fixed my contractors and I will be looking for another bank. It has been several months of trying to muddle through with this horroble software andI wonder what they were thinking when replacing a working system with this inferior poduct. Also a while ago they lost Zelle. So one less way to pay and get paid. Overall I still like the employees at UFCU and had many positive interactions with them it really is not their fault that somebody bought crappy software for the bank. read more

I have waited 6 months to write this review; website has not been improved despite consistently one star reviews on most platforms. Like other customers, I cannot access my accounts easily to transfer funds, get statements, etc. Impossible. After almost 50 years' membership, we have no choice but to move our funds to a bank that is administered professionally. Life is too short to agonize every time I must check balances and access statements. Because of this totally inept website, my 2024 tax preparation will be desastrous. No regard for "members", de-activating debit cards with NO notice, changing customer service by phone to M-F, 8-6, and engaging in big bank behaviors. It's clear the new leadership came from big banking, or desperately aspires to be like the big banks. If I could give zero stars I would. I've been a loyal UFCU member for almost 25 years. All of my loans (cars, small business, personal) have all been through UFCU and I've paid all of them off (except ones I just started). So suffice it to say I've treated them like family. 2 months ago my account had over $1500 stolen from it. Fraudulent charges from SeatGeek. I was just starting a 5 week long vacation when this happened. I called in and reported that I did not make or approve these charges for $1500 for SeatGeek. I also told the rep I WOULD NOT be home until early June. I said if there was any paperwork or anything like that they'd need to send it to me while I was on the road. The rep either ignored me or it slipped their mind that they'd be MAILING me a document I needed to sign and send back so UFCU could dispute the charge with VISA and SeatGeek. So UFCU puts the money back in my account and I think we are good. I get back from my trip in early June and I see that the $1500 has been taken out of my account a SECOND TIME. I call the CS line and they tell me I didn't send in the paperwork they needed on time (they needed it by May 24, and I told the rep I didn't get back until early June). I saw the document they sent, but not until it was too late. Now because of that one document not going in before May 24 (and me telling them, on a recorded call, if they needed to send me anything they'd need to mail it to where I was vacationing at) they say I owe them $1500. I opened a second dispute and escalated this but they still say I owe them the money that someone STOLE FROM ME. Once this is all straightened out I will be taking all of my account and business to another bank. Which is a shame because I'm about to open another location for my company. This is the 8th or 9th time I've had my card compromised in the last decade. Clearly UFCU doesn't value their customers or their financial security. read more

The bank changed software with zero communication to their customers. Bill payments lost and not clearing for 5 weeks. Very poor and antiquated website and app operation that won't show activity for the last 6 days. All the people we know that bank with UFCU have been very upset for the similar reasons. There's too much competition out there to mess with people's money and trust like this. We hope your decision to change to the inferior software helps you recoup the cost of the lost customers and also the ones that are still working on leaving. read more

I was a member for 28 years until today. service has been declining Over the years to say the least. They changed their online banking again and I, along with most members, could not access my account... for 3 weeks! I could not see my account, check balances nothing! I tried re setting passwords and username but the system would never send me an email. I tried to call numerous times and sat on hold for my entire lunch hour only to be told I was still the 39th caller in line. I emailed multiple times and finally today went in and closed my account. I withdrew every penny and the child that was working there could not give the slightest care in the world, never apologized or even tried to fix any problem. She would not even give me a statement for the last month so I have no clue what my transactions were. I had to drive all the way from San Antonio just to get a response or any action at all and it was awful. Worst customer service ever! Good riddance to UFCU!!! Pre-Covid I used to brag about UFCU's service but not anymore. I don't know what happened, but their employees seem miserable & the service is gone. They have screwed up 3 times this year, the worst time was last month (August 2024). After I paid my car loan off in July, I never got the title. After I called the DMV I found out it was UFCU's fault--when the lender notifies the DMV to release the title, the credit union employee has to manually enter the address. Well, an incompetent UFCU employee didn't copy my full address from the main screen & left of part of my Apt #, so I never got the tile! :( When I called UFCU to complain, an employee named Stephen said he would have the Loan Dept notify the DMV to send me another title. However, the next day I received a snotty email from the loan dept with no apology or ownership of the mistake yelling me I have to go to the DMV & get Certified copy of my title myself! After calling UFCU & threatening to close my Accts, I FINALLY was allowed to speak to a Mgr. After I explained everything that happened, she apologized and asked how they could make it up to me. I said the only thing would be my ORIGINAL title, but the next thing would be for UFCU to get my title & send it to me at no charge. Ms. Ross did that that but it was a royal pain and took numerous phone calls. If UFCU wants to improve, they need to: 1) Take ownership of mistakes and DO NOT BLAME THE MEMBER. 2) Train your staff NOT to make promises on behalf of other Depts but to transfer the caller to that Dept so there's no conflicting info and 3) Train staff on Customer Service, explain to them how credit unions are supposed to be BETTER than the large banks! If I wanted to be treated like crap, I'd use BOA. If UFCU improves over the next year I'll be glad to update my review. read more

I had a secured loan with them and they stole half of my money, then I had a business account that I needed to close, they said they would block all ACH payments but come to find out they only blocked them from my card but not from my actual account so they charged me $250+ in overdraft fees and told me there's nothing they can do smh read more

All of a sudden the credit union has started charging $2.00 for a copy of a cancelled check. This used to be available online where customers could look at their statement and select a check and it would let you download images of the cancelled check. Now when you go to the page it says there was a problem and to check back later. So I contacted them and they said there was a fee for this. I am not sure why. I am a good customer and have free checking because I keep high balances in the credit union. Of course they no longer charge anybody overdraft fees and those are the customers that often let their accounts go into overdraft. Seems like you would not start to add additional fees for your good customers while eliminating those fees for overdrafts. They are impossible to ever talk to on the phone (hold waits are long) and even messages they say they will answer in 24-48 hours may take a week for their response. Since they went to their new online and mobile banking formats it has no longer been a pleasure dealing with them. Going to check out some of the other credit unions in town now. read more

If you are even planning to set up an account here beware, you will never be able to get anyone on the phone should you have any issues. They make you go through so many hoops and so many number series, by the time you're done you're get nowhere and eventually left, after a long looong period of time, with an automated recording. I resent that they have my money but I cannot contact them at any point. You'll be left by yourself all alone and the best option is to go down there in person. Which is ridiculous if you have a computer online question. They make it incredibly difficult to contact them. Obviously they do not want customer inter-action at all and instead they want your money without interference from you, even though it is your money. Find another bank! read more

I tried to get a cashier's check for all but a small amount of money in one of my accounts (to cover the last payment set to draft), since I'm planning to close all my accounts here because of the bank's inability to send me a replacement debit card when my card expired. The teller would not issue me the cashier's check, even though this is an option on the withdrawal slip, and said I needed to speak to a rep at a desk. Lunacy. Give me my money. I ended up speaking to a manager about the problem leading me to close my accounts. I asked if their sixth attempt to send me a debit card in half as many months could be made via FedEx, certified mail, or some more reliable method, rather than standard mail. I was told no, because they use a third-party vendor. I explained that this would mean I'd be closing my accounts, since I cannot bank without a debit card. They say nothing can be done. I'd like to point out that we can send humans to the moon on rockets, but they can't send me a debit card in the same town. (On a past visit, a rep said their Visa vendor is here in Austin.) Either I am the unluckiest person in the world, or UFCU's third party vendor sucks at mailing out debit cards. Either way, don't make the same mistake I did. Bank somewhere else. read more

(This is a review of UFCU in general, not this particular location). Really disappointed in the way they've handled migrating to their new member banking website. I've had automatic payments set up for my UFCU credit card to pay off the balance in full every month, and it was working for over 10 years. Then they rolled out a new website, 6 weeks later I get a phone call saying my credit card is overdue. Turns out they weren't able to migrate everyone's settings over from the other website, so they just cancelled my automatic payments. Called them up, was told they would set it back up again. 6 weeks later, another call about my credit card being past due. Today marks the 4th time in a row this has happened. Every time, I call them, and I am assured they've fixed it this time. We'll see if it happens a 5th time. Botching the migration to the new website is one thing, but botching getting my payments set up 3 times in a row on top of that? Sheesh. read more

I love UFCU. I read some of the one star reviews and honestly I am surprised. Here is what I love: They have free checking. It was the only bank after my divorce that would talk to me about refinancing my house for the minimum 30-year mortgage. No big bank would even return my call. They have a teen account and it was super helpful for my son when he went to Europe with school. They set up two checking accounts for him so if he lost his travel ATM card or got mugged, he would not lose all his money. He would transfer only what he would use for the day to his travel account. For all those who complain about not having in person tellers in the lobby, it is because they got robbed years ago and kept tellers and clients at gun point in the lobby. It was awful. I respect the decision to keep their employees safe. Everyone in the helps desks in the lobby is super helpful and kind. I recommend UFCU to anyone, specially self-employed business owners. read more

ONLINE BANKING IS A JOKE. I moved over from "Bank of America" to UFCU because I was at the receiving end of some of BOA's sneaky debit card overdraft fees, which resulted in a class action lawsuit against them. Despite having signed up for every possible email alert I could to manage my finances, there have now been two separate occasions when my account was overdrawn and I wasn't notified via email about this until well over 24 hours later. I find this suspicious because I receive every other alert. Today I was charged $20 for a music service which was already supposed to have been cancelled, and this overdrew my account because I obviously didn't expect this charge. UFCU then added on an overdraft fee of $40. Despite this having happened around 7:00 a.m. on January 3rd, there is still no alert message in my inbox and it's now after midnight on January 4th. Alert messages are supposed to, um, alert me. This simple concept seems to be lost on UFCU. Let's just hope they never branch out into the car alarm business because the alarm would go off when the thief was half-way to Kentucky. To make matters worse, UFCU won't refund my $40 overdraft fee which was a result of the wrongful $20 charge, and they didn't seem to take me seriously when I told them that their alert messages don't work At the end of the day, they're just a bank like any other. Don't let their "Austin institution" spiel fool you. read more
