Wow this credit union system has gone down hill over the last 15 years! For the last 10+ years I've been able to come here and because they were a member of the credit union network in texas, I could deposit and withdraw from my Velocity CU bank account or get a cashiers check. Now they got all cheap and left that network. That not only hurts me, but it hurts their customers too cause they can't go to other credit unions now to have more services available across parts of town without UFCU. read more

UFCU has apparently been changing the way they function - for the worse. Not only did they try to pay all my bills before I got paid and mark them all insufficient funds, but they also have changed a system that worked really well in which the money was taken from the account the day the bill was scheduled to be paid and made it into a crappy check-writing service where you are at the mercy of whatever a-hole you paid bothering to cash your check in a timely way. The lady on the phone told me they expect us to balance our checkbooks. I don't even have a checkbook and eff that. It's 2023!!! Not 1980. And thanks a lot for immediately BLAMING ME for THEIR CRAPPY CHANGE and the the repercussions which will damage my life significantly. This change is terrible. Especially for someone with adhd who lives paycheck to paycheck. This will probably ruin my life. Bill pay that works well is the only thing that has saved me from being on the streets. I am so sad and disappointed at this change. Also the app made it extremely difficult to even figure out that they had sent my bill payments early and denied them for insufficient funds. Bad move guys. So sad. I've been a member since 1995 and have clung to it to dear life, but now I will probably just close it out. I have been a member for well over a decade and for the most part been pretty happy with the service because I've never had to really ask UFCU to do anything on my behalf. I got into a dispute with Amazon for double charging me for an order and only issuing one refund. I submitted a dispute and submitted all they requested but mainly the two drafts made to my account by Amazon. Amazingly, UFCU sided with Amazon despite the evidence and even when I talked to one of the reps initially they agreed it was a double charge. UFCU basically bend for big bad business that is Amazon and decided to screw their customer instead of fighting for me. I even submitted a complain with BBB but Amazon will never admit to making a mistake so it was not resolved and a bad rating was submitted. You never know how good an institution is until you need them to help you, today I found out UFCU will not fight for you. I will take my business elsewhere, there are plenty of choices in the area. I hope they comment on my review but I doubt it, whenever they put up a number to call it just goes to an automated recording, you can wait for a rep but then they'll just tell you to call another number. Save yourself the trouble, look for reviews that state the institution will help you when you dispute a charge or at least explain how they came to that conclusion not just tell you they did. Update 12/9/22: I wanted to give UFCU the benefit of the doubt and did like Brian M suggested and contacted UFCU and even sent an email as well. I first called the dispute number, but they were not able to help me, somehow, they don't see the same debits that I see on my account, so I was told to contact customer service. I also received an email that someone would be contacting me on the phone. Today while looking at my account, now it shows a credit from Amazon for the amount I was disputing. I don't know if Amazon finally realized their error and reimbursed me or UFCU realized I was charged twice and contacted Visa to resolve it. I recently started a new job and came in for the authorization form for a direct deposit. It was close to closing so I was already apologetic for coming so late, but the experience was effortless, quick, and delightful. I was promptly greeted and assisted within a minute of walking in the door. The entire process of getting the form I needed took less than five minutes and I was on my way shortly thereafter! I love banking with UFCU because the level of service is incredible and everyone is always so friendly. I will continue to use this for all my banking needs for as long as I am living in Austin. This location is very convenient for me as I live nearby, and I've never seen the facility look anything less than pristine. Any time I've needed a card replacement, a form, a loan, etc. it's always been a quick and painless process and the people I've worked with have been so nice. In the past, I've used Texell Credit Union in Temple, Texas and had nothing but negative experiences. That has never been the case here and I am so thankful I opened up my account when I was a student at UT! It was also always nice to stop in and grab a cup of coffee while I was waiting to be assisted, although I haven't seen a coffee bar at this location so I can't attest to whether or not there is one here... just goes to show you how prompt they are that I've never even had the time to look around. read more

I've been a UFCU member a long time and seen lots of changes. My use has been very basic so I rarely use advanced services. They do seem to have more technical issues than any other business I use. The bottom line is that they are rarely proactive on anything and any changes take their customers by surprise. I am confident that they are solid financially, but if you want to know what will happen ahead of time, forget it. My star rating is primarily for poor maintenance of their ATMs and very poor communication skills of management. read more

VERY disappointed with the same credit union I've had for over 25 years. My debit card is set to expire at the end of the month. I reached out to UFCU through their secure email to find out what happened. I was told that, somehow, they had not scheduled my debit card to be replaced/renewed. I was told that they could mail me a new card, but it would change the card number or that I could go through the drive-through to get a new debit card issued with the same number. This afternoon, I came through the drive through to get my updated card. I dealt with two different people. The first told me that a new card couldn't be issued through the drive through, then told me it would have to be a new number. Then, I was handed off to a different person who told me it would be the original card number. I came home tonight to activate the card after 7:30 per their instructions only to find out the card had been issued with the exact same expiration date (April 2020). In other words, I dealt multiple people at UFCU -- none of whom were able to help me. I thought credit unions were supposed to be more responsive and customer-centered than big banks. read more

I needed to get something notarized so I pulled up in the drive thru nbd, but they didn't have a specific lane for notarization as a different location did. I pull up to the speaker and press the call button. No answer. They're sanitizing the tube if it's not there (it wasn't there) so maybe they thought I was calling bc the tube wasn't there. They sent the tube down about a minute later and I called them again. No answer! So I just sent the document up anyways with my id. The teller came on the line and asked all confused "are we notarizing this?" My response "yes, I was trying to call to see if y'all could notarize it..." anyways... I had a great experience here and the representative was very nice. They missed a Star bc it was just slightly annoying that they didn't answer after I pressed the call button twice. These guys are very helpful, and offered (what I thought) was exceptional rates on a loan. Very satisfied with the care we have had here, including one of the manager's greeting us by name and asking how our daughter is doing whenever we walk in - definitely not the type if service you would get from a big corporate institution. One thing lacking is a good mobile app, and yes that's a pain in the butt. Fortunately we live a few blocks from the bank and they have great hours, so we could do anything we needed to in person. read more

Really sad. We'd much prefer to use a credit union, but UFCU's performance over the past few years has been terrible. They've really had a problem for about the last 15 years in transitioning to web-based services. Numerous times, automated payments did not go through. We set several bills up for automatic payment, monthly, and NOTHING happens. We wanted to pay additional principal on our mortgage today (purposely NOT though UFCU) and our mortgage company informed us that we can't make an additional payment right now because we have a FEE for a missed payment! The automated payment that UFCU should have made. Furthermore, when we checked the UFCU automated payment set-up, we noticed that it says "monthly" though May but says we only have 1 more payment "to go." Well, what about the Feb. payment that wasn't made, and of course March, April and May? That's a total of four payments remaining, not one. I hope to find another local credit union for regular checking, but I think we're going to be stuck going to a for-profit bank. I have been a member of UFCU for FORTY years- and it has provided me stellar account services, loans, and customer service across those years. However, the transition to the new November 2023 mobile and online services is a MAJOR FAILURE for UFCU. The new online platform does not provide many of the services previously available (travel notices on credit cards, options to change CD deposit) and the display is AWFUL, just terrible- you cannot see more than 3-4 transactions or accounts on the screen at a time, you cannot see past bills paid through the online system, you cannot see the percentage rate that your CDs pay, and the whole display is blocky and unintuitive. There was NOTHING WRONG with the previous platform-- and EVERYONE I know that banks with UFCU has experienced confusion, unintended late fees, or frustration. The wait to talk to a customer service person (because I have had to call repeatedly over the last weeks) has been ridulous. Either ramp up the quality of the online experience VERY SOON or you are losing this long time customer. read more

It's almost Halloween. I have been waiting on my replacement debit card since early August. At this point, at least 5 cards were allegedly mailed to me or my husband at two different addresses, and I am now on my third temporary card. In this process, I've dealt with rude phone reps and nice, but unskilled, in-person reps at this branch as well as at 45th and Guad. Among other things, I was told: our address is undeliverable; I never changed my address; the cards must have gotten lost in the mail. TOO BAD THE ONLY CARD THAT ARRIVED FOR ME HAD MY HUBAND'S NAME ON IT! Yes, he got two cards, I got zero, once something finally reached us. Here I am, at the end of another calendar month, needing to get yet another temporary card. This snafu happened concurrently with the expiration of the debit card for my personal account as well, and yes, those vanished, never arrived, or showed up with a truncated disaster standing in for my legal name. HOW HARD IS IT, UFCU? You print a name on a plastic rectangle and stick it in an envelope with a stamp and the recipient's address! The data you need is in a database! Add to this the 20 questions you need to play with the phone banking staff, a new crappy web interface, and just, no. I've been a customer here for over a decade, and used UFCU for my first mortgage. I've grown my savings to something much bigger than my initial deposit here, and my husband and I move a lot of money through three total accounts, including one for my business. I don't have some cheap-o free checking account with a 28¢ balance. It's never been so damn hard to get a fucking debit card. Once I can set aside the time to re-do all our auto drafting and bill pay, we're out. After all, I recently applied for a credit card with Bank of America online. When I walked in the door, I asked if I could open an account and be out the door in 20 minutes. I was directed to Eric Benitez and he said he'd do his best. 18 minutes later, I was in my car. He was great. Not only did he do what I asked, he was professional, courteous, and polite. Although even mgt. has been misguided/misinformed about how the loan dept. is dealing with the PPP program, there's been addl. disinformation coming out of the SBA. So instead of completely throwing the entire credit union under the bus, I'm coming back with 4 stars as normally UFCU does a pretty good job. They've dropped the ball in dealing with some of my insurance stuff I have with them, and a couple other screw ups thru the years, but by in large they've done outstanding work the rest of the time, better than any other regular banks I've dealt with. read more

At one point I was not able to use one of my two cards for ATM and purchases . That is dangerous and annoying . Presently Joel is trying to resolve some money that's owed back to me from one Airline , I trust that he will be successful, because he has been very successful to assist me in the past . Give that man a raise , and perhaps Jasmine too . I have a lot of love and forgiveness in my heart but I continue to hit roadblocks with UFCU in the most uncomfortable and unexpected situations . Buying a used car is super stressful these days, and as you may know, a lot of dealers & private sellers are not reserving a car you might be interested in, so the clock is always ticking on getting everything finalized or someone else can buy the car first! This branch at UFCU really came through for us in this stressful situation. We have been, and will continue, going to them for shared branching services since we're members of another credit union. We didn't realize shared branching doesn't necessarily cover what we needed for buying a car. When we showed up near closing time on a Saturday, the team here was super patient with us and they went farther than they were required to to make sure we had what we needed like we would have at our home CU. My entire family has banked here for many, many years. My experiences have been overwhelmingly positive, up until now. Now, that I am trying to buy my dream property and create my fantasy life. In other words: now that it REALLY matters, now they drop the ball and leave me on my ass. Oh yes, allow me to explain: I was "pre-approved" for my land-loan. A tiny, minuscule amount in the world of finance. Considerably less than my annual income. My credit rating? Insane, A+. 789. My employment? Great, I've had 2 simultaneous corporate jobs for the past year and change, following 2 other great jobs- one for the city, one corporate. I'm pretty credit-worthy. So, as the contracts are signed, a ton of nonsense is resolved, and the day comes ever closer to closing, suddenly, I can't get ahold of my loan officer. And for a land loan, there is only one person who can help you. Her name is Kathy Allen. I called and left a long email on a Monday. It was a bank holiday, and I just wanted to be poised to move forward immediately on Tuesday. But Tuesday I didn't hear from her. I called and left a message. Wednesday, I called and left another message. Thursday, I am starting to get desperate, feeling crazy. haunted by thoughts of, "why does she hate me so much?" and "Maybe she's just not that into me..." At this point I'm embarrassed to leave any more messages. But I call Friday, and she answers the phone- FINALLY. All nonchalant like. As if I haven't been trying to reach her all week, as though my realtor wasn't also trying to reach her. As though this is a normal way to conduct business. And things seem to be good- moving forward. And then, close to closing time, she calls and tells me that her underwriters would not approve my loan. Because...because I am not employed "full time". Which is absolutely insane, by the way, given my cumulative hours, given my profession. And now it's the end of the week and business hours are ending. In the end, I was able to get financed through a family member, but had UFCU and Kathy not wasted 2 and a half months of my time, I might have closed much sooner and saved literally thousands of dollars. Thanks for nothing, guys. My faith in UFCU has been shaken to the core by having been treated like a truly unimportant afterthought, not a valued customer. Great bank, questionable lender. read more

I am very concerned at the tendency for driver's licenses to go mysteriously missing at this bank. Several months ago I made a withdrawl at the south branch and I sent my driver's license in the tube to the teller along with my withdrawl form. I was in a hurry so when the tube came back to me with the cash envelope that they tuck your license into I simply put it straight into my purse and left. I discovered when I got home that my license hadn't been returned to me. I went back to the branch the next day where they insisted they didn't have it even though that was the only place where I had removed my license from my wallet that week. Now I find out from my mother that she too has had her license stolen at another branch of this bank. The same situation occurred with her where she did not check inside the cash envelope returned to her to see if her license had been tucked inside like it usually is. She called them up later that day and once again they insisted they didn't have her license just as they had claimed they hadn't had mine. I don't know if there is a dishonest teller working for this bank who is pocketing people's identification cards or what but it is extremely unsettling to distrust your own bank. read more

I've been a UFCU member for close to a decade. Due to a recent financial hardship, I missed a couple of credit card payments. UFCU decided to block my access to my bank account online with no notification whatsoever. I was informed (in a nasty, condescending manner) of what happened when I called, thinking my account had been hacked. (My debit card was compromised no less than 4 times last year.) She refused to remove the hold until I paid, which I'm unable to do for two more weeks. How am I supposed to make a payment when I can't see what my account balance is? This is ridiculously punitive and counterproductive. UFCU has lost a customer. This is the kind of treatment I would expect from Bank of America, but never a credit union. read more

I have had two very annoying experiences at this branch location, both involving terrible customer service. Today, I went to the branch with a couple of account questions, signed in at the computer station, then sat down to wait for an account rep to help me. As I waited, I saw 4 reps helping people. There were 6 of us waiting for help. But that didn't seem to concern the manager, whose office has glass windows right on to the waiting area. He spent the 25 minutes I waited before leaving chatting and laughing with two idle account reps in his office. This is my second bad experience at that branch. I suspect others have had the same problem, because the two people who got free and came to call the next customer each ran through two names of people who had signed in but left because they ran out of time. I love going to UFCU. I especially love going here to withdraw cash. My Mom opened an account in my social security number way back in the early 80s so I have been a "member" since the ancient times. This location is nice because the line (inside) goes fast and I actually get to see someone face-to-face unlike the 45th Street location which has the tellers in a separate room so I only interact with them over the monitor. So in conclusion ... you should drop the big national bank and their hidden fees and switch to UFCU or any other credit union... just say'n. read more

Having been with UFCU for over 5 years, this review is long overdue based on the fact that I have been elated with the service I've received at least 99% of the time. Before switching to UFCU, I had been with a small local bank that was then bought by Norwest, which was then bought by Wells Fargo. I was with Wells Fargo for FAR too long. They taught me a whole new paradigm for customer service - "We're not happy until you're not happy." Sufficed to say, I finally got fed up, did some research and decided to switch my primary banking to University Federal Credit Union and went down to the Steck Branch to sign up. Over the last several years, I have moved all of my financial services over to UFCU, including primary credit cards and car loans, and their rates are among the lowest I've ever received and customer service are personal, friendly, and focused on customer satisfaction. A couple of little bonuses: If you lose your Check card or it is compromised in a vendor data breach, they can cut you a new card at a branch on the spot - no waiting for them to mail a new card. Also, for new loans, they offer E-sign, so you can have them send your loan docs to you by email, sign them electronically, and you're done. If you are still banking with a big bank like Wells Fargo, Chase, Bank of America, Capital One, or any of the other big banks out there, you have no idea what you're missing out on. read more

These are nice people and they try but they are still amateurs. Someone needs to pay attention to the public. Their entire Austin ATM system seems to be shut down, all afternoon, but there is no mention of it on their website, and no way to call anyone to report it or find out where a working ATM is. Sad I had to pay one of their competitors $4 to get my own money. And waste 90 minutes on a beautiful day driving to their branches before figuring out it was the entire bank shut down.
