We visited Udupi Palace Restaurant Surrey after a gap of over 5 years. This restaurant is pure vegetarian & serves mainly South Indian food. Previously it was a small family owned restaurant with a spartan menu & offering. Today however we noticed that whilst the interior was virtually same, the food Menu had expanded vastly to include many dishes including a few North Indian items -Chole Bhatua, Paneer Dishes etc. Further they had a " glossy" menu card with pictures.
We ordered Special Veg Thali's , Paneer Dosa, Chilli Bhaji, Paneer Bhaji & Bise Bale Bath (Spicy Sambhar Rice).
The Thali's were wholesome , tasty & had good vegetables -Brinjal & Okra curries, Sambhar, Rasam, Curd , Rice ,Biryani Rice, Papad , Gulab Jamun , Pickle & surprisingly came with a nice Masala Dosa. The Bise Bhale Bath , Chili Baji, Paneer Baji dishese were good but the Paneer Dosa was disappointing. Being Lunch time, there was a "steady stream" of customers-mostly North Indians ordering their "Standard Dosa". Services was reasonably good & food tasty & not "diluted & made mild" to suit North Indian palates. The only negative point was playing North Indian songs in a South Indian Restaurant & this seemed odd & out of place. Prices like everywhere else have risen & the Thali we paid $11.99 six years ago is now $16.99/-
Overall Udupi palace deserves a visit specially by South Indians looking to eat authentic , undiluted South Indian dishes. read more
