Was craving Indian food one day and I remembered wanting to check out Udipi, was not disappointed! While you may not get the Thali buffet that you can get at Maharaja Bhog, the portions at Udipi is definitely enough. Plenty of parking and the owner/waiter was friendly. Lots of South Asian families eating here, so a good sign! The girlfriend and I shared the Mysore Royal Thali and a Dosa. Personally I thought I would be able to finish the Thali like a champ, but I couldn't, I had to take some home. The Thalis come with so much and at a great price, you legit can't do this that easily at home! Everything was so flavorful, and taste great. My only regret is that they don't have a handout to describe everything that's in it, or to describe the other items on the menu. Regardless, I'm definitely coming back to try more! read more

Having enough sides is important especially when guests come home unannounced, especially a pure vegetarian restaurant at that since some of us have reservations- Udupi cafe helped us on both these counts. Not having tried before we were apprehensive, but it was on the way and time was limited so got some food for take- away. Rotis, channa masala and plain rice was already at home, to complete the feast we got bhendi masala, malai khofta and zeera rice. Soo glad to say that Udupi cafe saved our day- The bhendi masala( ladies finger curry), was rightly cooked with not too much spice or too less, the malai khofta was creamy and just melt in the mouth, and zeera rice was flavorful. The price was reasonable and service time is good too. Should come back again to dine- in. For now happy with the take away. read more

For the past four weeks, my husband, sister and I have been on the search for a five star worth Indian restaurant to try. Given the plethora of Indian restaurants in Houston, surely this wouldn't be difficult. And luckily for us, on the fourth try, we found it. Udipi Cafe is located right off of highway 6 in a large shopping center that has quite the array of food choices. From fast food, to Vietnamese to Indian food, there's plenty of options for all. We decided to try out Udipi after a failed attempt at buying dinner at the grocery store Keemat, in the same center as Udipi. We ordered a few dishes and very not disappointed with this vegetarian restaurant. Butter Paneer - like butter chicken, but with cheese instead of chicken. I was a bit hesitant hearing my husband order this, but after the first bite, I was sold. Chicken who?? The creamy texture paired with the flavor explosion in your mouth, guaranteed you'll be back for more. Chana Masala - my favorite of the 3. How can they make chickpeas taste SO good?? It's such a simple sounding dish, yet the depth of flavor amazes me. Highly highly recommend this one. Saag Paneer - I've made many attempts at making saag paneer during the past year in quarantine. Unfortunately, I have never come close so I am so glad that Udipi makes this dish so well. Not sure what they do, but it's better than your typical saag paneer, that's for sure. Masala Dosa - this dish was okay. The potatoes were good but the actual dosa itself was pretty standard. This came with two dipping sauces and sambal. Each entree was served with basmati rice and they were more generous with the rice serving than the other Indian restaurants we went to! Udipi is a favorite neighborhood restaurant with a host of delicious vegetarian offerings. The restaurant was busy with patrons filling the space as usual. Many were families. Tonight we had Bisibelebath, Spring Dosa, Sambar (soup) and rice cakes (Idly). We were treated to a Mango drink and a sweet dessert. Came here this past Saturday. Their water is good. The one star for the fellow that brought the food and the water. We walked in and weren't greeted to know if we seat ourselves or are seated. A couple came in after us and just seated themselves. We followed suit. Unsurprisingly the waiter with visible bad attitude served them first. He was at the front when we initially arrived, he was too busy with the woman at the front to acknowledge us. We received dal with no bowls or plates. The dal was bland and had an additive thickened consistency. Our masala dosas were a bit sweet and soggy. Sambar is from a powder mix... our chaat, pani puri and dahi papdi, came out last and had little flavor. I watched several people come in not knowing if to seat themselves. The woman at the front only does transactions otherwise not helpful. Our waiter tumbled into a toddler at the table next to us. His body language showed his annoyance. Someone at the table apologized. A few moments later the child started crying. The waiter did not console her. Definitely will not come back. This place is the most authentic, king of all dosa places. Firstly... Their dosas are as tall as a 2 year old child which is they way they should be. The Sambar is delicious with hearty load of vegetables. Most importantly They care about their customers and their dosas. This is apparent by the way they wrap their dosas on a to go order. Each dosas is wrapped individually and never folded. So when you get home and put it in a oven or air fryer it comes out crispy and fresh. Best to eat it there obviously but if you got to Togo, dosa folded in a to go box is an insult to the dosa gods. Also their chutneys are amazing!! I went there after a long time as I was a craving a rava Masala dosa. The order took longer than usual , but it was not long overdue. The dosa was ok, nothing spectacular. It did not melt in your mouth as it was not the ideal crispy kind. There was too much of potatoes in the dosa , without much flavor. The chutneys were good , no complaints there. What was bothersome was the communication between the serving staff among themselves. They all spoke Spanish and I do understand a bit. They (2) were either on the phone or conversing with each other and using cuss words non stop. I had half a mind to get up and confront them but decided against. This is highly offensive as the customers should not be subject to a barrage of offensive language. At some point, the owner came back and normalcy was restored. He was courteous and polite. It's just been a couple of times now that our orders have arrived barely lukewarm, dosas slightly soggy - a little bit of a damper. Service has taken a blow lately. It's kind of awkward having to repeatedly wave your waiter down to ask for water refills, leftover boxes, and the check (I swear all three occurred during the same visit). Like dude, for real, did I kill your puppy or something? What's with the silent treatment?! Food: I went with Vegetable Korma, which the server described as containing coconut milk rather than cow's milk. I'm not sure what the proper name for this dish was, but korma it was not. This is a cozy vegetarian and vegan place. I went for the $8.99 weekday lunch buffet. I didn't know but The lunch buffet came with a personal sized dosa that had a potato stuffing inside. The dosa was crispy and the potatoes were seasoned well. The potatoes were a little oily, but not dealbreaker. All of the VEGAN options were marked! My favorite Buffet item was the vegetable biryani and vegetable pakora. The yellow dal needed a little more flavor or salt, but I still liked it. My friend liked the little donut things. There were lots of sauces to choose from: coconut chutney, spicy chutney (my fave), mint chutney, and this tamarind sauce. I LOVE the raw onions with jalapeños and carrots. I'm not sure what it's called, but I ate a lot of that. It was me and my friends first time there, and I think the owner could tell. She kindly gave us tips and explained to us what to eat with what. Fortunately the extremely nice manager took my hands and explained all the various veggie dishes, carbohydrates, deserts, and sauces on display. Not able to give 3 and half stars, hence it is 3 stars. I am a local who has been coming to Udipi Cafe for nearly 21 years - their old location where Naseeb restaurant now is, their larger location that opened later, and now their current location on Williams Trace. Especially during the pandemic, I try to support local restaurants especially vegetarian restaurants (I am a vegetarian), and I always root for local business! Today we dined in instead of getting take out which we have been doing since the pandemic. Food is still good, but we are noticing some changes in customer service that can use some improvement. 1. Dine in customers who want to take leftovers home are now charged for carryout containers. There was a 50cent charge for "custom item" and when we asked, the waiter brought out the menu and showed an item for a carryout box! This is new and very surprising. 2. We were charged extra 99c for coconut chutney that we asked for, when we got a dosa and ran out of chutney. This too is new - in Udipi (earlier) as well as most restaurants serving idly or dosa, if we run out of chutney they replace at no charge (within reason). For this too, we were charged 99c for a "custom item" and the server brought out the menu to explain the charge. 3. Last week I had ordered takeout and the take out order had a mistake - I was charged for a (more expensive) butter masala dosa that I had ordered but when I brought the order home the dosa was a masala dosa that had neither oil nor butter and was stiff and hard. It was very difficult to even break and eat it and I had to douse it in sambar to get it to that point. I was too hungry to take it back or call immediately. Being a long-time customer I mentioned it to them. The owner hesitated a bit, and all they said was "next time we will try to ensure this will not happen". I should have perhaps called immediately the same day, but they could have given a coupon for next time, as a gracious gesture. I have been a customer for 21 years. Attention to detail and better customer service would greatly increase goodwill and bring in more customers. This is still a nice place but I don't want customer service to go further downhill, hence writing this review. read more

What an enlightening experience this was! And in the worst way possible. My 3 yr old who had what was called a "dosa", but was a crispy cracker, was charged $6.99 for her buffet! Obscene price for a kid who barely touched 1 idli and had one hard idli. Our food was very strange. All the dosas we ordered were crackers that crumbled every time we tried to grab some masala or dip it into anything. This meal was VERY OVERPRICED COMING IN AT $50 for 3 adults and 1 toddler! As a South Indian myself, I was very confused by the lackluster chutney, the watery/tasteless sambar, the over spiced paneer, and the hard/strange flavored idlis. I ordered a vegetable samosa as an appetizer, which was one of the better samosas I've had, and also ordered the Special Rava Masala Dosai, which was surprisingly large and filling. The dish came with a small cup of stew and sauces. Both the samosa and the dosai were both very heavy as both contained lots of potatoes. I also ordered the mango lassi which I would recommend. Happened to be in Sugar Land and we decided to eat Indian food for lunch. The Udipi Cafe was recommended by an acquaintance. They had a lunch buffet on but we decided to go a la carte. My wife and I shared the idli and the deep fried Indian fritter, Medu vada. For the mains we had the masala dosa and Rava (semolina) dosa. The food was pretty good and tasty. The dosas are huge and we could only finish half of them. The accompaniments are not comparable to what we would get in India but they were much better than some of the other few Indian restaurants I've tried around here. With two appetizers, two dosas and three buttermilk drinks the bill came 35$. The rating would apply to the food we ate and not the buffet or other main dishes available. read more

One of the best Indian restaurants I've tried in a while. Don't let the vegetarian cuisine fool you, the absence of meat does not detract from the food. The atmosphere is good, the A/C didn't feel like it was on when I was there. The waiters were very helpful and attentive, and we got to meet the owner - he was really mindful of everyone and made sure we had a good meal. My friend had the South Indian Thali which had a bevy of different flavors. It was like a sampler of the different curries and food, it came with rice and naan, and the rice comes with free refills. I had the Baigan Bartha which is an eggplant curry dish. It was great and spicy, I thoroughly enjoyed covering my rice with it. The menu is large and it can get a bit confusing, but my friend and I took a gamble on the dishes we ordered - and we thought they were great. The mango breeze was a great way to stem the fire that builds on your tongue. My friend described it as, "Drinking an air freshener." Which might sound bad, but he was just describing the fragrant feeling that's left on your tongue after taking your sip. 3.25 Stars. I'm Indian, though not South Indian so I'm no authority on the cuisine, but I have had quite a bit of dosa and idlly in my day. That being said, Udipi is really just an average South Indian restaurant. Each time I've been here, I felt myself leave with a feeling of "meh". Also, each time I've entered the restaurant, I'm like "ugh". The vibe, the layout, the service, the general darkness of the space makes it feel very dingy and cheap. I'm sorry, but that's just how it feels to me, and it's not my intent to make it sound worse than it is. The dosa, idlly, and sambar are all slightly above average. Whenever I take my first bite into a dosa, I find myself wanting more crispness, more finger licking goodness, more savoriness, but I don't find it. I never find it, even though I like it just enough to keep eating it. It's sad, really, because my parents love this place so much and I never feel compelled to join them. I really feel they're catering to a devout vegetarian Indian population with this restaurant, and I don't believe they'll ever really extend beyond that. If that's what the owner is going for, then okay, but if she aspires to more, she'll need to bring some fresh air into the space (and into her food, service, and overall presentation). read more

My friend showed me this place and I am very happy that I tried it out! I got the buffet style. Everything was delicious but unfortunately, I couldn't try every single thing. It was too much for me, but it means I can come back again to eat the ones I like again and try the ones I haven't tasted yet. I pretty like the Sambar, Yellow Dal Tadkawala, Kadai Paneer, Poriyal, Potato Pakora, Poori and more! My favorites are the Lemon grass with Kadai Paneer and Poori. I had to get two plates of those. When I was getting their special soup, a worker came up to me with a plate, so I can put my soup cup on top of it. Also it was so I don't burn myself.
