About 4 years ago I had gotten some new prescription glasses and everything seemed OK. However, apparently my distance vision had started to deteriorate and about 6 months ago, I was in a city that I was not familiar driving a car in, and I had trouble navigating because I couldn't see the road signs well enough in advance. So I figured - another pair of glasses will do it. I went to an optometrist and he did his thing and told me I had cataracts! This disturbed me. I began noticing more that everything at a distance had multiple images and were blurred. I was a premature baby, along with my twin brother (3 months premature) born after World War II. The procedure, in developed countries, was to place the preemies in incubators in an oxygen-rich environment so lungs could mature properly. The oxygen-rich environment was good for the lungs, but it turned out, in many cases, to be bad for the eyes. It caused an erratic development of my retina and led to retinopathy of prematurity or ROP for short - fancy terms for essentially a scarring of the retina and the loss of the normal use of the eye. So, I have lived with sight in only one of my eyes since essentially birth. My twin brother has a similar situation. Naturally I was terrified of cataract surgery. What if something happened and my sight was degraded or lost? I had no other eye to rely on. However, I knew I couldn't function normally with a cataract and needed to do something. I went to the internet and searched for cataract surgeons. I had one overarching condition - that because of my ROP, I wanted a surgeon who was tightly associated with a university, and therefore familiar with the latest advances in surgical techniques - one that also performed cataract surgery and also taught it. I poured through a few listings and came across a blog by Dr. Devgan. I was surprised at the clarity that the functions of the eye and the cataract surgery were presented. He discussed the old ways of surgery that required a 'ripe' cataract, but also newer and more innovative ones. As with anything, people are generally afraid of things they don't understand. After reading Dr. Devgan's articles, I had a renewed sense of well-being. Everything was explained so that the patient understood the procedures. I had thought that cataract surgery was more invasive than it is. Because of advances over the years in techniques, he explained, cataract surgery could now be done safely and sooner rather than later. So I went in for an evaluation. I found the general atmosphere in his office was extremely relaxed. Everyone was good-natured, no doubt a manifestation of Dr. Devgan's approach. After a few preliminary tests, pictures and scans of the eyes, Dr. Devgan discussed the results with me. I was on equal footing with the doctor, a peer somehow. I almost felt I could do the surgery myself (ha-ha). All aspects were discussed, he showed me that I actually had ROP in my good eye, but it functioned normally. Because of my situation he wanted to make sure things were OK and had me follow up with a retinal physician (one of his former students, BTW) for an evaluation. Absolutely nothing was left in question. Things were OK to proceed. I was pretty nervous on the day of surgery. I had no reason to be. Things went quickly. I could see what was being done even through the procedure. Maybe it took 10 minutes, maybe shorter. Naturally my eyes were dilated so it took a while for my vision to return to normal. I never lost visibility and could read a clock about 15 minutes afterwards. I still marvel at this. The colors are tremendous now. I will never need glasses for distance again in my life! I've already told my twin that when he needs cataract surgery, he's going to Dr. Devgan - I'll fly him across the country to do it. Thank you Dr. Devgan! Cataract surgery has a high success rate (you may not quite get the expected results, but you will likely still have a big improvement in your vision by having the surgery). However, it is surgery, and something could (and once in a long while does) go seriously wrong for an individual. So it is important to spend effort on the selection process (see my review on vitals.com, wellness.com or youcomparehealthcare.com for more about my process). The ability to see again clearly is truly incredible! The only thing I can think of that might come close in importance is the ability to hear, and given a choice, I'd far rather lose my hearing. Because of the cataracts, I lost the ability to drive, and was rapidly losing my ability to work on the computer. Everything was fuzzy and somewhat yellow tinted. It is such a pleasure to see clearly; the colors are much brighter and sharper as well. One thing that I noticed is that there's a more abrupt transition from an object being in focus and to being out of focus as that object moves closer or farther from me. Before the cataract surgery, the muscles in my eye would adjust the thickness of my natural lens as something moved closer or farther, but the monofocal (artificial) lenses are not adjustable. This is minor difference from my pre-cataract vision, and not one that causes any problem. Dr Devgan is very well known and respected among his peers. He is at the top of his game and at the forefront of his field. 1. He has done numerous eye operations on other doctors and ophthalmologists. 2. He's told me that a significant number (15%) of his patients fly in from out of town. 3. He has developed several tools used in eye operations (check his web site). 4. He has demonstrated techniques live, performing actual operations to audiences of up to 1000 other ophthalmologists a number of times (6 or more, I believe). NOTE: If you'd like to see what happens in a cataract surgery, see his videos on YouTube. 5. He is on the faculty of the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. 6. He gets referrals from other ophthalmologists when something has gone wrong and it is necessary to remove an artificial lens and replace it with another. That is a difficult operation that should not be done unless it is really necessary to do so, and therefore as mentioned above, most other ophthalmologists will not replace an artificial lens with another one. 7. He has relationships with and consulted with a large number of companies in his field, and therefore has ready access to new options as they emerge. Dr. Devgan is very enthusiastic about his work, and always striving to "raise the bar" and improve his knowledge and skill set. He takes strong and personal interest in each patient, and is keenly aware of the fact that what he does will affect how you see for the rest of your life. In addition, he was highly accessible and very helpful in explaining the options, the procedure and answering all of my (many) questions (questions which he probably has heard a zillion times before.) As you can tell, I am a very pleased and appreciative patient, and recommend him with the utmost enthusiasm. read more

My name is Harry McMullan and I learned that I was developing cataracts when, during a routine eye exam last December, I commented to my regular ophthalmologist that he must have changed dilation fluids, because I wasn't squinting as much as I had immediately after previous eye exams. He replied, "No, it's because you're developing cataracts and less light is getting through to your retinas." As I have been dragging around glasses for 30 years, the prospect of lens implants was not unwelcome, but "due diligence" as to which ophthalmologist I should entrust with the task was clearly in order. My wife's mother had had a cataract operation with an unfortunate outcome and I was keen not to have that happen to me. My research took me to Uday Devgan, MD, whose practice is located near UCLA in Los Angeles. Reviews consistently rated Dr. Devgan among the nation's top cataract specialists. Accordingly, I made an appointment to see him. I found Dr. Devgan's office to be clean and orderly, and his staff friendly and professional. One of his technical specialists put me through a series of eye tests and measurements on multiple impressive-looking testing machines, and thereafter I met with Dr. Devgan. He explained the results of the tests which had just been made, and what happens in a cataract operation. I asked him about a Bausch+Lomb system I had read about that corrected for both near and far vision. He said that while he thought very highly of the B+L products and used them frequently, he recommended a simpler B+L system that would correct my vision to 20/20 from fingertip length out for my particular case. I expected an LA big-city price, but in fact the total cost he quoted for both eyes (after insurance) was less than a third what my home town ophthalmologist had given me! As to Dr. Devgan's qualifications, the fact that he is Chief of Ophthalmology at Olive View UCLA and full Clinical Professor at UCLA shows both his desire to help others and his competence to do so, and his 19,000 cataract procedures in the last 15 years abundantly demonstrates his experience. He told me that he is very proud of how many ophthalmologists come to him when they personally need lens replacements. Other ophthalmologists also often refer "revision" cases to him, where the task is to repair cataract surgeries that didn't turn out as they should have. To top off his professional qualifications, he personally invented a number of the instruments now used in cataract surgery. (Check it out: http://www.storzeye.com/products/8363/Phaco-Choppers-Manipulators/Devgan-Universal-Cataract-Chopper-Multi-Tool/ET0703.aspx ) Personally, I found Dr. Devgan to be most friendly and generous with his time. Without being asked, Dr. Devgan gave me his personal cell phone and email address, an unheard-of offer from a physician in my experience! Dr. Devgan performed my cataract surgeries in a one-week interval beginning on February 22, 2016, and the results have been outstanding. No pain, no problems, great result. Do yourself a favor and contact Dr. Devgan if you have cataract issues. I couldn't be more pleased with how mine turned out. read more

I found Dr. Devgan after weeks of deep research and learning everything I can regarding cataract, its types, procedures, lenses and everything else out there available on the internet. My case of posterior polar cataract is a fairly rear (few in a thousand) and there are very few professionals in the world who are experienced in treating this condition. See, many doctors would properly detect the case but if they operate - the industry statistics say you have more than 30% chance of serious complications. 1 out of 3. Not a great perspective... While learning about different methods of treatment, I kept coming across articles in scientific journals written by Dr. Devgan. I was impressed with the depth of his knowledge and easily recognizable signs of a true, trustworthy professional and enthusiast of his field. As he was remote for me selecting him was not an option. Or so I thought and called his office to ask for a reference to a specialist in NYC area. From the first moment of talking to his staff member it was clear to me that no matter what it takes I would be flying to LA. It would be my privilege to be treated by Dr. Devgan and to be one of his numerous patients among which are his own mom and dad. So I did, traveled there several times... and am very grateful I did. Honestly, I am not sure why Dr. Devgan needs reviews on the internet - perhaps just as a due to the modern way of doing research by amateurs. Every ophthalmologist knows him. Number of them choose him as a doctor for themselves. People fly to his office from all over the world. Being the Chief of Ophthalmology at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center he taught surgery to hundreds of residents for more than a decade and he unquestionably is the top professional in the field. He conducts trials for FDA and asked to test devices by major biotech companies, he invents tools himself and helps the industry pioneers to push new break-through technologies. The list goes on and on. One would never think this doctor is reachable for an ordinary patient at least not in the next 50 years. Yet everything you read about him is absolutely true. Very caring and attentive, would give you his personal email and phone and would answer your questions to the point of you running out of them. Readily going into the mathematical, mechanical and medical depth of any aspect of your interest. I was amazed by my experience with Dr. Devgan and his staff. Not only he gives you the opportunity to see the world again. He does it in the way when you wish you had more than two eyes. Extraordinary intelligent, deep thinker, enthusiastic, kind, approachable doctor with the capital letter D. His confidence, experience and knowledge together with enormous amount of positive energy you feel when he is next to you are phenomenal. I wish all doctors had Dr. Devgan's human and professional qualities. There is no other doctor for me, my family or anyone I know. Thank you Doctor and I wish you many productive and successful years of bringing happiness to your patients and people around you! read more

It's been 4 months since my cataract surgery with Dr. Devgan. I wanted to wait a while to be able to give a full perspective on my experience before writing this review. To begin, Dr. Devgan is at the absolute top of his field. He is an incredibly busy man, but will take the time to discuss your needs and provide thoughtful answers to your questions. His office staff was a little weak on communication, at least with me, and failed to provide the pre-appointment reading material. His office is equipped with the absolute state-of-the-art equipment for precise measurement of the eye parameters needed to provide the optimum replacement lenses. In my case, I had astigmatism in both eyes as well as rather serious impairment from cataracts. I was surprised to learn that the surgery center simply stocks lenses with every astigmatism prescription, so there's no wait to obtain customized lenses. I chose the Vivity lenses because I work with a computer a lot ant wanted to have clear enough vision to work without glasses. The result is that indeed, I can read my computer screen and more generally, normal size text, without classes, and there are no halos or other weird optical effects. Overall it has been a good experience, but now with the experience of hindsight, I think I would have preferred the simple single-focus interocular lenses. Why? I was accustomed to wearing glasses anyway, and after the surgery I got a new prescription for progressive lens glasses. Quite a mild prescription, that improves my vision at all distances compared to unaided vision, so it's easier to read. At the same time, my distance vision could have been more clear with the "standard" lens. I am interested in astronomy and feel like that interest would be better served with the standard lenses, and I could just wear glasses (as I do anyway) for reading and working at my computer. That's not to say I'm dissatisfied with the results though: I would say my vision is perfectly adequate, and as-advertised. Overall I am thrilled with the results. The very first thing I noticed after the surgery was how much richer and more saturated were the colors of everytthing around me. That's a joy that has continued every day since. I was also amazed how clear the vision from my right eye was, since it had always been the weaker eye (due to higher astigmatism). For reasons unknown, the left eye is not as clear, and also varies, sometimes being quite clear and other times blurry. Another effect, unanticipated, is how my vastly improved vision affected my overall mood, addressing a sort of depression I didn't fully realize I had. I actually felt a couple of inches taller too. In summary, I think Dr. Devgan is the best surgeon you could have, and whichever option you choose, your only regret will be not having the surgery sooner. read more

My LASIK experience with Dr. Devgan's office has been fantastic. I'd needed glasses since middle school, and I'd grown used to them. Used to, but never happy with. I'd been on the fence about LASIK for several years, always apprehensive about the cost/benefit tradeoff. However, in the past few years I fell in love with water sports like surfing and ocean outrigger racing. Being nearsighted here was a real drag - I had trouble seeing incoming waves in the surf line-up and the dolphin pods that sometimes played 50 feet away from our canoes during races. I decided to take a chance and look into LASIK, despite my apprehensions. I heard about Dr. Devgan from an ophthalmology resident friend who did his MD at UCLA. My friend, who is a real stickler for technical quality and precision (we did our PhD's together at Caltech) described Dr. Devgan as "awesome" and "really hardcore." I knew I should check him out. I was not disappointed. Dr. Devgan and his entire staff made the whole LASIK process very smooth, from start to finish. The consult was a breeze. Dr. Devgan made sure to spend extra time with me answering all my technical questions about the procedure. How many doctors, after hearing that you studied math, will answer your questions about higher order vision aberrations by discussing Zernike polynomials with you? Awesome. Surgery day was great. I arrived at the office in the afternoon, and 1-1.5 hours later everything was done and I was on my way home. In all honesty I was pretty nervous, but Dr. Devgan and the entire staff made me feel very comfortable throughout the procedure. At each stage of the surgery, they talked me through the process letting know what they were doing and what to expect. The whole process felt quick, efficient, and safe. Follow ups were very helpful. Dr. Devgan and Dr. Tabanfar made sure to spend the necessary time answering all my questions about the recovery process. I was a little frustrated that my vision hadn't completely recovered 1 week after the procedure. Dr. Devgan reviewed details of the surgical procedure with me, and explained the specific mechanisms that caused vision fluctuation symptoms in the immediate days following surgery. He also patiently explained how the healing process would occur and how the symptoms would resolve. By 5 weeks after the procedure my vision had completely recovered and stabilized to 20/15. I see really well both day and night. My eyes feel great. One final note. Soon after the surgery, I started training for my private pilot's license. During the eye exam portion of my mandatory FAA physical, I informed the flight doctor about my recent LASIK. After testing my eyes the doctor remarked "Wow, your vision is really good! You should definitely thank your surgeon." So that's what I'm doing. read more

I am an active 76-years young grandparent that educates children with many life lessons through my platform as a professional tennis teacher. Within the last two years I have notices that my vision seemed to be diminishing, especially while driving after dark. I went to an eye doctor in New Orleans I was told that I had the "C" word, cataracts. Upon returning to Los Angeles I received a referral from my physical therapist to go to Dr. Uday Devgan. I typically do not go to a doctor whose name I can not pronounce. Not because of a bias, but embarrassment that I lack the ability to pronounce a person's name. correctly. Dr. Devgan is right out of central casting so to speak. The appointment was easy to make with an extremely helpful staff person that made me feel good about the registration process. Plus, they take insurance. My office visit found a very professional and smiling staff welcoming me at the front desk and making me and my daughter that drove me feel at home instantly. In my wait to be checked out I witnessed members of the staff escorting patients to the very high-tech testing area. Upon my entering that area, the testing was explained to me step by step by one of Dr. Devgan's assistants. In no time I was finished and I am happy to report that they do not use the old-style puff of air in the eye machine! After a brief wait in the well-appointed waiting room I was escorted with my daughter to meet Dr. Devgan. Have you even had a doctor with the credentials of being a teaching doctor at UCLA, with a charismatic personality and personable beyond belief? He took his time to educate us on the procedure and answered every question that we had. It was unusual that any doctor would invest the that amount of time to spend with their patients! I must admit that I have had both hips replaced, two back surgeries as well as an ankle and tennis elbow operations, yet I was concerned about having my eye worked on. My fears were laid to rest during this visit. I knew that I wanted the eye surgery and more importantly I trusted him and his staff to do this procedure. Long story short, Monday the 18th of March was the day of my right eye procedure after the prior Monday's left eye procedure. What a life changing experience! I can see brighter, clearer and more details than I have ever seen, plus the miracle working Dr. "D" has transformed me for someone that needed glass from dawn to bedtime without the need of glasses, except for reading. What a life change experience. Excuse my enthusiasm for my much-improved sight and confidence that is part of my excitement. I am honored to be among the many people that have been helped by this extraordinary doctor. Dr. D, you are the best! I see the world a lot better now! Gratefully, Edwin D. Trellue III read more

I have been aware from some time that I should have cataract surgery in both eyes, but continued to put it off for quite some time - it is a daunting decision to let someone operate on your eyes, and the market is flooded by medical professionals touting their expertise, affordability, speed of procedure, and patient satisfaction. So much to wade through, but I realized my cataracts were starting to impact my quality of life - primarily not being able to drive at night, or identify details of objects on the other side of the room. Accordingly, I started my research. Because of high ratings almost everywhere, Dr. Uday Devgan's practice was one of the first I called. Although I investigated 4-5 other practices as options, my first strong impression of Dr. Devgan was one of a high level of professional competency (one that was born out through the entire process) and this led me to a quick decision to have him perform these two procedures. This is turning out to be one of the best medical decisions I have made. As of this writing, I have had the right eye done and am having the left eye done in a few days. Beyond the amazing success of the procedure - within 24 hours the vision of my right eye had exceeded my expectations and continues to improve - the overall experience deserves a very, very high rating and recommendation. And, it was all made so very easy - very light sedation, zero pain (not even any discomfort), done in a professional, efficient, modern outpatient facility (also owned by Dr. Devgan and his partners). Half-hour of talking to the nurses and getting ready (with the procedure done in my own cloths), into the operating room, 10 minutes of prep and discussion with Dr. Devgan and the anesthesiologist, 5 minutes of procedure - all done. Amazing! Dr. Devgan has an obvious passion for the work he does that carries over into all aspects of his practice. ALL members of his staff that I encountered were exceptionally professional, helpful, and competent, can answer questions quickly, and solve problems efficiently. His website is top notch and full of the information you need - all easily accessed. Dr. Devgan's interactions before, during and after the surgery are above and beyond what you might expect from even another good surgeon - he reaches out to his patients personally to ensure satisfaction has been achieved and is available on an ongoing basis to answer questions, volunteer information, and provide educational materials for those who want an advanced understanding establishes that not only does he love what he does, but that he is truly a master of his craft. If you are in need of this procedure, I give the highest recommendation to Dr. Uday Devgan. My only regret is that I waited so long to have it done! read more

First of all, I am a practicing eye surgeon in the Los Angeles area, so it goes without saying that having sharp vision is very important in my line of work. For all my life I could not see even the big E on the chart without wearing glasses or contact lenses. My prescription was too high to be a good candidate for LASIK surgery. Earlier this year I decided to have my own natural lens removed and replace it with a new artificial lens that gets rid of most if not all of my eye prescription. As an Ophthalmologist, I either know or know of nearly all of the reputable eye surgeons in the Los Angeles area. Several years ago, I had met Dr. Devgan at a national eye conference. He was giving a talk about eye surgery to an auditorium full of Ophthalmologists. I was so impressed not only on the details he knew of his craft, but also how down to earth he was. He did not come across as arrogant like many other so-call experts that I've met. So when I decided to have my own eye surgery, I called Dr. Devgan to take care of my eyes. He spoke with me personally and got his staff to make an appointment for me right away. He examined my eyes and performed several tests to determine the best lens to put in each eye. Now I've done these lens measurements many time my self for my own patients and know the accuracy diminishes the more nearsighted one is. Nevertheless, we agreed to aim for distance in one eye and to keep me slightly nearsighted on my other eye. I scheduled my first eye on an early Monday morning. I was given mild sedation and felt very calm. The procedure to less than 20 minutes. I felt no pain except for the occasional pressure sensation here and there. My wife drove me home and I drove myself to see him the next day with wearing a contact lens in my other eye. After the visit, I drove directly to my office and saw my usual clinic full of patients. I scheduled my other eye the following Monday morning and did exactly the same thing. The only time I took off work was the day of each surgery. I was able to resume performing surgeries a week after my second procedure. It's been many months since my surgeries and I am absolutely thrilled by the results. With both eyes open, I can see at a distance the 20/20 line on the chart and I can read most print most of the time without wearing any glasses for the first time in my life. I only need to wear readers rarely when it is very dark or when the print is very tiny. Having this vision allows me to examine my patients and perform surgeries without wearing glasses or contact lenses. If you need eye surgery there is no one else that I would recommend more than Dr. Devgan. read more

This was particularly crucial for my brother, whose case was intricate due to a previous, distressing complication--a rupture of the posterior capsule in his left eye, necessitating three surgeries over three months. After the complication, we discovered Dr. Devgan on YouTube through his series, "Cataract Coach," where he skillfully navigates complex surgical cases while imparting his wealth of knowledge. This showcased not just his technical prowess but also his passion for educating both peers and patients--a rare quality that convinced us of his competence and dedication. The surgical procedure on my brother's right eye was remarkably smooth and pain-free. Dr. Devgan's attention to detail was evident; he not only remembered my brother's unique situation but also made sure to have specialized equipment prepared in advance. Just one day post-operation, his vision was restored to a 20/20 clarity. The transformation in my brother's demeanor was palpable: for the first time in months, he was smiling! Beyond his surgical skills, Dr. Devgan stands out for his empathetic bedside manner. He treated my brother with the care one would expect from family, providing what can only be described as VIP treatment from start to finish. By opting for Dr. Devgan, you're not merely choosing a surgeon; you're choosing a lifetime of optimal vision and impeccable care. We are forever grateful and thank you so much Dr. Devgan! read more

As an ophthalmologist myself, I chose Dr. Uday Devgan to perform my LASIK procedure because he is known in our profession to have the best outcomes and lowest complications. Dr. Devgan is not only known for having gifted surgical hands, but he also trains ophthalmology residents, so he is always on the cutting edge of our field. My experience with Dr. Devgan and his office was absolutely perfect. Dr. Devgan has a fantastic bedside manner. At my pre-op appointment I met all of his staff who immediately made me feel comfortable and at ease. Dr. Devgan's surgical planning was precise and spot on. Coordinating my appointments with his staff was pleasant and flexible. I cannot emphasize enough how wonderful his staff were, and I only wish I could steal them away to work at my office one day. Any ophthalmologist would be lucky to have them! On the day of my surgery, my refraction was double checked, I was given a light sedative, and given time to relax in a massage chair in a pre-op room. Once I was ready, I was invited into the OR suite. Dr. Devgan has a very unique setup in his OR suite that allows the surgical bed to pivot between the lasers, allowing for a seamless transition for the patient between the laser for the flap creation and the laser for the ablation. As far as I know, his is the only practice to employ such a method and it is genius!!! After experiencing it myself I am convinced that this should be a standard setup at all LASIK offices. Dr. Devgan and his staff made me feel at ease throughout the procedure, which was over almost before it had begun! For me it felt like it only lasted 2 minutes from the moment I lay down on the bed to the moment I stood back up. There was no pain. After coming home and taking a nap, my vision was great! I walked to the grocery store that night and marveled at my new visual acuity. I kept waiting to feel dryness or pain, but only every experienced a mild foreign body sensation that disappeared after 24 hrs. At my follow up appointment the next day I was able to easily read the 20/15 line and even some of the 20/10 line. I felt like I had eagle eyes! Dr. Devgan nailed our target exactly because my new prescription was measured to be plano (0.00 both eyes). Goodbye contacts and glasses! I have been enjoying my stunning vision ever since. In short, Dr. Devgan is an amazing surgeon, and even his fellow surgeons think so. If you need LASIK or cataract surgery, he is your doctor. His staff is also extremely helpful and friendly and will make you feel comfortable and valued. read more
